Ways of Reading - An Anthology for Writers

4 stars (From a Teacher) - I have used this book to teach a freshman writing and reading course at a liberal arts school. Because of the difficulty of many of the texts, it was met by my students with little fanfare. While a few of the pieces are clearly too much for the average freshman (Foucault comes first to mind), most can be used effectively to get them to discuss issues. I have found that the students would rather talk in generals and universals than with the intricate arguments that some of the writers brilliantly present. This is one of the those books that if you decide to use it in a class, then you better be prepared to not only sink with the ship but also be able to provide an inspiring tour of the ruins. 5 stars (Challenging, yet rewarding read) - I had to read this book for my upper division journalism class this fall and found it to be one of the best books that we used in the course. The editors have tried to collect well-written, intelligent documentaries that challenge traditional connections between words and photographs. Included are Edward Said's inspiring piece about the Palestinian holocaust and exile, a piece by Roland Barthes about the meaning of photograph, "Let Us Speak Now of Famous Men," and many others. Although some pieces are better than others, Barthes' piece is more exciting and informative than Marianne Hirsch's writing on the way that children are used in photography. Over all, the collection is a rewarding and challenge book that could be used for any upper division class. (Maybe the reason that previous reviewers did not like the book is that it was not intended for first year college composition classes.) 1 stars (Blah, Blah, Blah) - I had to read this book for my Freshman lit/comp class and it is by far the most pathetic collection of essays every gathered. Creating Writers Through 6-Trait Writing Assessment and Instruction 4th Edition

5 stars (Creating Writers Through 6-Trait Writing Assessment and Instruction (4th Ed)) - This book gives so many examples of the qualities to look for and teach in writing instruction. I especially like the fact that this edition is more inclusive of secondary ideas and samples. With this book as a guide, it is hard to miss what is important to the writing instructional process. The information is comprehensive and user friendly. 4 stars (Great info, inconvenient format) - Creating Writers got me charged up and well-prepared for teaching sriting/revision using the 6 Trait model. Spandel writes well, using a combination of research-based information and personal anecdotes to keep the reader's attention. I appreciate the number and variety of samples she included for practice revision/assessment. The samples were, however, not very easy to duplicate for classroom use. The print is too small and there are often two samples on one page, or one sample on several pages. The layout is difficult to work with. Overall, though, the book is excellent. I have been to two training sessions about 6 Traits, but it took Spandel's book to get me hooked and enthusiastic, and made me confident about using the 6 Traits in the classroom.The information deserves a 5 star rating. The format deserves a 2. 4 stars (This book is worth it!) - I found this book to be very helpful, user friendly, and filled with good information. Writers Inc- A Student Handbook for Writing and Learning

4 stars (Helpful Handbook) - This book is helpful, especially for middle school aged children who are learning the proper techniques of writing. It is easy to use. 5 stars (Outstanding Resource: Simple, Organized, Invaluable!!) - It has been proven time and time again the necessity of well-spoken and well-written language. Industry professionals, chief executive officers, and medical students use a different language than rap musicians and drug dealers. Those with the few minutes required to easily reference this book while writing will far exceed the minimalist expectations of modern education and, no doubt, far exceed the annual income level of their post graduate classmates. Neither race nor economic class is as great a social divide as language abuse and misuse. Not only has this book remained in print for quite some time, but it is one of the few books from high school I refuse to discard. Reading this book from cover to cover, although personally encouraged, is not absolutely necessary. Organized more akin to a dictionary, this guide is ridiculously simple to navigate within its many tips and tricks. Although I held a great jealously towards my senior-year, male English teacher who managed to steal the attention of the few young women in our class through the rhyme and reason of old poetry, he did our class a great justice through the forced purchase of this book. The difficult choices you make in life determine your overall success or failure; ask, what literature will survive the test of time: Shakespeare or your last AOL Instant Messenger conversation? 4 stars (essential guide) - I was introduced to this book in high school where we were required to have a copy and use it throughout all four years of English classes. I found it so invaluable that my first copy was worn out during college. Combined with "The Elements of Sytle" (Strunk and White), there is no excuse for poor writing. ...

Rules for Writers

5 stars ( Rules for Writers ) - The book is a required book for class. It looks to be an excellent resource book. It came in great condition and timely fashion. It looks to be an easy read and easy reference. 5 stars (THE book on writing properly) - This is arguably one of the most well-written books on the subject of writing that I've seen thus far. The author provides the reader with a comprehensive set of tools, definitions and mechanics that are essential in most every form of writing. While this book is well-aimed towards those who write academic papers or journalistic publications, ` Rules for Writers ' will help improve the writing skills of those who communicate with others via email or who wish to acquire skills in writing professional business letters. The chapters are easily laid out and will help a reader regardless of whether the entire book is to be read from beginning to end, or if a specific subject is sought (punctuation, etc). This book has helped me with my academic writing and I highly recommend it for those who regularly write essays or other forms of correspondence. 3 stars ("For students" is right) - While this may indeed be handy for students working on papers, I found it too cumbersome for daily on-the-job reference. My fault for buying it without giving it a thorough look. The detailed index is nicely done. This one will go back to the store, to be replaced with Karen Gordon's Transitive Vampire. Meanwhile, I'll stick with Strunk. ...

5 stars (MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, Sixth Edition) - This book will take you step by step on how to write a research paper. The topics are listed at the beginning of each parragraph. Some of the paragraphs have the main points and highlights at the end. It's a great book to have handy. 5 stars (MLA Handbook for writers of Research Papers, sixth editions) - An excellent overall guide for writing research papers. I highly recommend this product for all college and college-bound students. What a remarkable way to display and work with the English Language. 5 stars (Must have...) - This is a very important handbook for English Graduate students, especially since professors expect only the best papers from their students at this level. The layout is very simple and it covers almost everything. I like how it goes into punctuation issues; I always have trouble remembering when to use semi-colons versus commas. I'm probably still using them wrong. There are a few grammer issues I wish they'd include, such as "who" versus "whom," but overall most everything is covered. ...

5 stars (Always remember...) - The reader is another person. Regardless of the rules, talk to that person! Lay it out in human terms... Than another person can relate to. There is no excuse for bad writing. - Clint Arthur, author of "Free Your Love Now" 4 stars (Embrace the Power that is Turabian!) - I used this for several years as an undergrad, and now that I'm being sucked into APA-heck, I look back on it fondly. It covered everything I ever needed to know to write a paper. Some reviewers have complained that it is not sufficiently modern, that it does not provide a citation style for web pages, etc. This is incorrect. Section 8.141, on page 151, shows us how to do this. (Some ellision from the demonstrated form will probably be necessary, but it works.) You didn't invent the internet, kids. It's been around for a few years, and the grown-ups really do know about it. Turabian, Grossman, and Bennett did make several assumptions about the reader of their book. They assumed he or she is capable of using a table of contents, and of reading rather large chunks of text and assimilating or marking the relevant portions. If one lacks the intellectual fortitude to do that, one should probably skip this manual and ask their instructor if they can use the "Golden Books" or "DC Comics" manual of style. 5 stars (Accentuate the positive) - Have you ever noticed that more people read the good reviews more than the bad ones? This book is appropriate for what it is meant for. If you know Turabian died prior to a new edition of the book, then maybe you should be using your PC to search for electronic resources (using Turabian font in the search engine)..... and not wasting time being negative... ...

2006 Writers Market Writer-s Market

2 stars (Not for fiction novelists.) - Larger than 2004 edition, but lists only 50 agents. One must purchase the Guide to Literary Agents or pay significantly more to gain access to their website to get more agent listings. The publisher listings are all but worthless for anyone writing adult fiction novels (especially mystery/suspense,) as virtually no quality publishing firm will accept unsolicited manuscripts. The few listed that do are either e-publishing or very small firms that only publish 6-12 novels per year. I don't know whether there are more publishers and magazines listed in the Novel and Short Story Writer's Market. If so, it would be a better purchase. If not, why print it in addition to this book? My money would have been better spent purchasing the agents' guide or even simply joining their website. 5 stars (Always exactly what is promises) - More information than I can use, this is an excellent resource for serious writers. 5 stars (Must-Have for Every Writer...) - If you are a writer, or WANT to be a writer...this book is for you. It tells you where to sell your stuff, with thousands of listings, and also gives you good advice on current market rates as well as writing tips. I've bought one every year that I've been in freelance, and will continue to do so. For instance, if you have an idea for a magazine article, you can search alphabetically or categorically for the best places to query, and that listing will include contact information, how to get a sample copy, departments and sections of the publication, how much they pay, and what they're looking for. Most publications also include some helpful hints like, "we don't want this type of piece," or "break in with this type of piece." You can't go wrong. Buy this RIGHT NOW. ...

4 stars (A Fun but Brief Look at Literary Crankiness) - Rogers presents an insightful and fun look at the writing mind and the factors that influence it. While it's true not all writers are cranky, his reasoning here is fun to follow even if it is a little too brief at times. His 'Five Emergency Tools for Writing a Short Story' are interesting exercises that any writer can use to jump start a stalled writing session. A few of them seem slightly outlandish, but he does suggest modifying them in order to make them work for different writers. He gives examples of stories he created using these tools, but unfortunately, doesn't include even parts of the stories themselves as further illustration. ...
