The Road to Reality - A Complete Guide to the Laws of the Universe

1 stars (Who is the audience for this book?) - This is the first review I have been moved to write ... I bought this book because I like to read other people's perspectives on Physics; particularly when they are as smart as Roger Penrose undoutedly is. I have a PhD in theoretical physics (QFT) so I am hardly uneducated, or uninterested, in these topics. I found that this book tried to jump straight to an elegant mathermatical explanation without trying to impart any of the physical understanding. If you don't already know this material, this book won't help. At several points I just laughed out loud; one in particular when after explaining some arcane point in complex algebra involving a fraction, Penrose adds a comment along the lines of "I explained what a fraction was at the start of the book". He seems to be under the total delusion that you can just present the results of 20yrs of education in as many pages and people will just pick it up. I can only conclude that he is so familiar with this material that he has completely lost touch with its difficulty. The same must be said for those reviewers who liked this book; or else they are just lying to make themselves feel good; or perhaps they don't understand as much as they think they do! 5 stars (Shining brilliance!) - Penrose's book is really a thrilling experience. His intuition is brilliant. His explanations are crisp. His teaching ability can be probably only matched by Feynman. I got the book yesterday, but couldn't stop reading it so far. The first 150 pages I've read gave me a completely new perspective on complex calculus, which I had studied in undergraduate and thought I understood it. I am looking forward to other sections on differential geometry and other advanced topics. The book is very appropriate for people who have taken/are taking math courses but don't have good intuitive feel for the subjects covered---most math courses (especially, the grad ones) only emphasize the mathematics not the in...

Cabela-s Big Game Hunter 2006- Trophy Season

5 stars (Great game) - This is a great game. Cabela's Big Game Hunter 2004 and 2005, Cabela's Deer Hunt 2005, and Cabela's Dangerous Hunts are also very good. This game is a good one to choose for average hunters. Dangerous Hunts is for beginning hunters. Deer Hunt is for experienced hunters. The scenery is one of the best things about these games. It took me three days to complete the career mode of this game. Time passes more slowly than in some of the other games in this series. Day changes to night. There is rain, snow, and wind. There is no choosing a season in this game. Many of the animals are slight variations. Animals included are Arctic Wolf, Barren-Ground Caribou, Bison, American Black Bear, Bobcat, Brown Bear, Columbian Black-Tailed Deer, Cougar, Coyote, Dall's Sheep, Desert Bighorn Sheep, Desert Mule Deer, Eastern Timber Wolf, Grey Wolf, Grizzly Bear, Javelina, Kodiak Brown Bear, Lynx, Mountain Caribou, Mountain Goat, Musk Ox, Northern Timber Wolf, Northwestern Moose, Polar Bear, Pronghorn Antelope, Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, Rocky Mountain Elk, Rocky Mountain Mule Deer, Roosevelt Elk, Shiras Moose, Stone Sheep, Tule Elk, White-Tailed Deer, Wolverine, Woodland Caribou, and Yukon Moose. Patch Clamping- An Introductory Guide to Patch Clamp Electrophysiology

5 stars (The first of its kind) - I'm giving this book a high rating because it fills a niche for which no other text exists: An absolute beginner's guide to patch-clamping. Yes, you could read Neher & Sakmann's hefty "Single Channel Recording" but, for the complete novice patch-clamper, it's a bit overwhelming. So, you walk into a patch-clamp lab, there's a million different things on the rig and you're feeling very confused. The microscope is much more complex than the microscope you remember from high school, there's cabling literally everywhere, and everybody keeps mentioning how important it is not to disturb the "voodoo" shielding. Where do you start? What do all those instruments do? Will I ever patch a cell on my own? This is the book for you. The book does an excellent job explaining the main components on a patch-clamp rig (and advice for setting up your own if you're just starting up a lab) and gives detailed instructions on whole-cell patch clamp techniques. (I have not evaluated the single-channel techniques but they too seem quite well written.) Also, many simple "equivalent circuit" diagrams are given so that you can understand what you're measuring. You will patch successfully after reading this book! My only criticism is that the book is a bit skimpy on what to do after you've got the cell patched. Only a few voltage-clamp techniques are explored and there is very little on experiments using dual recordings. Otherwise, it's an excellent book. If you're new to patch-clamping, this is (literally) the only book for you. ...
