First and Last Things

Quote, "Recently I set myself to put down what I believe. I did this with no idea of making a book, but at the suggestion of a friend and to interest a number of friends with whom I was associated. We were all, we found, extremely uncertain in our outlook upon life, about our religious feelings and in our ideas of right and wrong...

The Tipping Point- How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference

1 stars (Please - Stop Him Before He Writes Another Book!) - This is the second Gladwell book I've read, and unfortunately its as bad as the first (Blink!). His basic point is that little things can make a big difference. Gladwell's problem, however, is that he doesn't know what he's writing about, and it's a fatal flaw. For example, early in this book he relates how a "small change" in Brooklyn policing strategies turned into a "large drop" in crime. In reality, "broken windows," accompanied by much more data-driven and administrative follow-up policing referred to by Gladwell was a large (not small change). The reality is that "broken windows" policing ended up going far beyond simply pursuing those with minor violations (eg. fare-beating) to include studying crime patterns (location, timing, etc.), setting improvement goals, and regular high-level follow-up. Secondly, "Freakonomics" research concluded that the crime-rate decline began BEFORE the change in policing, and that much of the decline was due to increased staffing. Gladwell also attributed the decline to improved economic conditions - however, no such decline accompanied prior economic good times. Finally, Gladwell offered no explanation of why similar steep declines in crime occurred across the U.S. at the same time - without regard to any change in policing! Another of Gladwell's problems is that he doesn't seem to understand anything about statistics. The fact that a change in policing suposedly occurred at the same time as a decline in crime rates seems to be "proof" of causation for Gladwell. One of the first lessons in statistics, however, is that "correlation does not imply causation." Summarizing, the book starts out poorly, and goes downhill from there - increasingly boring, confusing, and totally lacking in credibility. Don't confuse, aggravate, misinform yourself with this book 5 stars (This Little Book will Make a Big Difference) - This fascinating book is an investigation into ...

First Things First- To Live- to Love- to Learn- to Leave a Legacy

5 stars (A MUST Read) - Having read more than a dozen books on the subject of mission statements, goal setting and time management, and also having taught workshops on the subject myself, this is the one book that I find most useful. As some other reviewers point out, it may seem a little heavy in parts, but the details are well worth studying. As the authors emphasize, time management doesn't begin with managing time, it begins with finding our own individual purpose, establishing our mission, and setting our goals to achieve that mission. This is more than a "how to" book. It is a "why to" book. It has the ability to persuade people that they need to set written goals. In teaching young adults, I have found some that insist they don't need written goals and that they certainly don't need a mission statement. My response is to encourage them to read this book. I appreciate how persausive the authors are in encouraging the reader to find the "main thing" without getting trapped into becoming a success in just one small area rather than fulfilling four areas of the "quadrant," including physical, social, mental and spiritual. Moreover, they bring home the necessity of finding balance and staying balanced in the different roles we have in our lives. After you read this book, I recommend that you consider reading "The Power of Full Engagement" by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz, and "Finding Flow" by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. You won't be disappointed. 5 stars (A Revolutionary Resource!) - As someone who juggles many different responsibilities and a crowded calendar, I approached this title with high expectations. I was not disappointed! Covey here offers a revolutionary resource for time management. Rather than following the standard theme of how to do more in a given period of time, the author emphasizes the importance of setting priorities and planning ahead. His analogy of the clock and the compass is priceless in describing the two elements that shou...

Dress Your Best - The Complete Guide to Finding the Style That-s Right for Your Body

5 stars (Well Done!) - This book is the best of it's kind. It is simple and to the point. It's going to change the way I approach shopping for clothes. Stacy and Clinton work to make people look good no matter what their shape or weight or height or figure flaws. When I saw some of the pictures of people (in their underwear) I thought, "No way are they going to make this person look good!" But I was wrong every single time. The people look good. They look together. It made me feel good just to see the change. What I think Stacy and Clinton are about is that they want people to feel good about their bodies no matter what(or where) their problem areas are. What they show us in this book is that we all really can have our "outsides" match our "insides." 5 stars (Stacy and Clinton Don't Disappoint) - I was thrilled to see the American hosts of What Not To Wear co authored a book. The show is fabulous and the book lives up to that standard. First, the book helps you identify your body type not by using some fruit or obscure geometric shape but real world identifiers. The guidelines they use are so simple they make sense for those of us not so handy with a tape measure. Also, the book does not assume every one who is petite is a size 6. Guidelines are given for a variety of shapes, sizes and heights. It also shows you how to dress for work, play and formal occasions. My absolute favorite part is the pictures in the back of the book that show and tell (some fashion books assume you know what a bolero jacket looks like). No assumptions are made here this book provides pictures for everything the authors talk about or recommend which to me makes perfect sense. Fashion is so visual and at last there is a fashion book with actual pictures of real people wearing the right clothes instead of 3 or 4 cartoon drawings that supposedly represent human body shapes or pictures of the same two people who supposedly represent every figure flaw or asset. S...

Conversational Spanish in Nothing Flat 8 One Hour CDs-200 Page Illustated Text-Answer Keys - Tapesc

5 stars (Great Method) - I am enjoying both the book and the 8 CDs found in this course. Very effective method! Really gets you speaking Spanish quickly and without the hassle. Book is great too. Easy to read, follows the CDs and has a word for word tapescript at the back. Biggest Plus: Easy and Fast 4 stars (Conversational Spanish In Nothing Flat (Frobose)) - Easy to use -- have found a couple of errors in English-to-Spanish words, but no big deal. It is somewhat difficult to use the book in conjunction w/ the recording, because the book has no real format. Took me a while to realize the "almost verbatim" words on the tape are where an index usually is. Otherwise -- pretty decent method of learning to converse! 5 stars (My Personal Experience with Conversational Spanish in Nothing Flat) - In my opinion, no "single" language tool (a book for example) will make you completely proficient in a particular language. The key is to sellect various well crafted tools with different approaches. This gives you a more well-rounded view of your subject. Conversational Spanish in Nothing Flat will not by itself make you fluent but it adds "an important piece" to your developing knowledge and it does this very well by touching all bases and giving you lots of fun quizzes where new things are introduced and earlier lessons are reinforced again again. ...

Get Anyone to Do Anything - Never Feel Powerless Again--With Psychological Secrets to Control and In

2 stars (The Title helped it sell) - The book was boring to read. The examples were weak. The title was the best thing. 4 stars (Great reference guide --- but don't fall for the title!) - I bought this book with, I guess, the belief that the author actually offered esoteric knowledge about the subject he's writing about. Of course, he implies he does right in the title, as a matter of fact. The gentleman knows how to sell. It's a good book, and in fact, it does exactly what it says it does. It gives you stategies for handling social situations and manipulating people, but they aren't secrets. Many of the tactics are things that we all know we can do. Others are things that we forgot we can do. I don't think many people will find tactics here they've never been exposed to before. Putting all these strategies together is a great idea, and makes this a worthy read. I should also say this book isn't very academic, so I wouldn't suggest it for research purposes. It describes effective strategies, gives some examples, and then summarizes them. In this form, they're easy to memorize and reference in the future. Overall, I'd rate it as a concise, easy, effective read. I think it would be a handy reference guide for those who are just starting out in the real world, or perhaps even trying to start their own business, if only so they can see how power players will play them. Had the book been written, printed, titled, and advertised as a pocket reference, I would certainly have given it five stars. 4 stars (The Art of Manipulation) - While much of what David Lieberman covers in "Get Anyone To Do Anything" is basic knowledge when it comes to interpersonal relationships, he does manage to provide plenty of meaningful bits of insight that most readers will likely find useful. Tactics covered in this book have been included in such writings as special forces guerilla warfare manuals, interview & interrogation guidebooks, and sales literature... just to name a few. Nothin...

Getting Things Done- The Art of Stress-Free Productivity

5 stars (still using method over 1 year later) - This is a perfect personal organitional method. It is so simple it could have been described in 1 chapter. But its good to be convinced of the pitfalls of disorder and the stress it produces. There are a few parts I haven't put in place yet. I am a teacher and I was totally overwhelmed with paperwork and seemingly endless amount of things I needed to do to prepare lessons, teach these 7th graders all day, grade, keep records, reports, deal with the ridiculous amount of paperwork they are constantly piling on top of you: memos, curriculum, behavior plans, tardy forms, referrals, progress reports, IEPs, IAPs, calendars, schedules, personelle forms, insurance, sign this, fill out this, parent call logs, and on and on and on and on you get the picture. etc etc etc for a new teacher it was quite overwhelming plus i was dog tired after teaching all day! I went to office depot after school one day and saw this book and got it on a whim. The INBOX, the one filing system, the trash it, act on it or defer it. These SAVED MY SANITY. It is amazing what an organized life with no loose ends can do for you mentally and physically. The philosphy and application of Allen provides are priceless priceless PRICELESS and its not complicated!!! 5 stars (Most effective getting-organized book I've ever read) - This book takes an entirely different tack from most other getting-organized books. Other authors advocate figuring out the big picture first ... but most of us are so busy with daily fires that the luxury of high-level goals seems beyond our grasp. With his bottom-up approach, David Allen starts you off you a few simple ways to get a handle on your everyday tasks -- so that you can free up enough mental space to even start to think about your long-term goals. Once your head is clear and you're no longer burning so much energy on tracking things that are better tracked externally, other books (like Stephen Covey...

Atheist Universe- Why God Didn-t Have A Thing To Do With It

5 stars (an awesome intro to atheism) - I was in need of something new to read, especially on atheism, and after I read the reviews for "Atheist Universe," I bougut it. I'm interested in religous questions, so I read a ton of religous books. I also read books on atheism because something inside me is suspicous of religion. So I often enjoy books by clear thinking atheists like David Mills. Now the book. This book is slender (about 240 pages), is neatly organized, and is clearly written (this is the most lucid book on atheism I've read, and Mills has some serious writing talent). All the essentials are here: arguements for the existence of God, as well as their flaws; how morality doesn't need religion to support it; and big bang cosmology (how the universe doesn't need a creator). This last part was helpful, since I'm always in need of a primer on the scientific jargon--something that is often technical and confusing--but which this book dealt with simply and clearly. There are a lot of books on atheism out there, but if one must choose the most comprehensive, up-to-date book on the subject, then get this book. You can look at it as the "Cliff's Notes" to atheism, although it's so jam-packed that it could be an encyclopedia. I don't keep many books on my shelf; most go back to the used bookstore. This one, however, is a keeper. Lee Tasey Author of "The Gospel of Arnie." 3 stars (Premise to refute all notions of God is absurd) - The premise that Dogmatic Religions are the only religions that define God is absurd and therefore his claim to refute the existence of God is equally absurd. There are several non-Dogmatic religions that work towards the understanding of God and Reason through scientific reasoning on one pillar and archetypal symbolism in the mind's most abstract to bridge a gap to understanding that God resides Within. The oddity most people debate on the existence of God is not whether GOD is infinitely manifested, on all cosmic planes, but whether...

4 stars (Great Packing Job) - THe books arrived in great condition. I ws jsut a little suprised at how long they took to arrive but other then that all was well. 5 stars ( When Bad Things Happen to Good People ) - Harold Kushner is an excellent author. This audio cd is excellent to listen to in your car or when you are alone and too tired to read. It is so touching and real, you will want to listen time and time again, just to keep things in perspective, especially in this day and age of tragedy. 5 stars (clear sensitive and insightful) - This book helped a great deal during a difficult time in my life and helped me to get to other side. I highly recommend this book as well as everything else he's written -Kushner mopre than any other writer helped me to develop my own conception of and relation to God. ...

21 Things I Wish My Broker Had Told Me - Practical Advice for New Real Estate Professionals

2 stars (One piece of advice...avoid it - Elizabeth and Jameson Thottam) - This is lousy entry book for Real Estate professionals. Myself and my husband, Jameson Thottam (he used to work with Real Estate firms such as The Loan Page, Homestore and IndyMac Bank), have been dabbling in residential real estate and we found this book a horrible start in terms of teaching the core secrets (i.e., valuation, SEC II stat techniques, tax implications and flippying and insider trading tips of how to find/negotiate the best properties). Trust us, Elizabeth and Jameson Thottam....we've been in the business for the last two years now and would not recommend this book. -The Thottam family 5 stars (Great for Newbies) - This book is a great way for new agents to know what they are getting into. The book covers a multitude of issues that people outside of the industry don't know about including what to expect (and what not to) from your broker. There's very little detail in the book, but it's a great overview and, quite frankly, you'd be hard pressed to get all of the information about real estate into 10 books, much less one. This is a terrific book for setting your expectations in a realistic place. It covers everything from planning your career change to how to hold an open house. I'd highly recommend it for new agents just getting started or for anyone thinking about getting started in the industry. I offer it as a suggestion to all the new agents I train. 4 stars (Very Good Book for New Licensees) - I am just got my license, and I can tell you, alot of the 'how to be successful in real estate in your first year' and from the various seminars I have attended, they all basically say the same thing - Market yourself, prepare for the rough patches, work, work, work to see results. Nothing really earth shattering or inspiring. But I liked this book because of it's honesty. Alot of what you hear and read in other books, on how to market your self and get leads - this b...

The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book - Everything You Need to Know to Put Your EQ to Work

4 stars (Managers & above: please read!) - If you don't know the difference between your I.Q. and your E.Q. and how much it matters in the workplace, then read this book--especially if you're a supervisor, manager, director or CEO. There's even an on-line test to see how you rate. Run--don't walk--and get this book. Better yet: order it right now on Amazon :-) (Your employees will thank you!) 5 stars (Fabulous Read) - This is the most thought-provoking book I've read in a long time. Without being simplistic, it introduced me to so many interesting things I could use to my benefit. Being intellectually smart is surely a strong advantage in our society, but it doesn't say nearly as much as your control and awareness over your own emotions. Have you ever wondered why you have emotions, how your brain works to process them, and how you can use them to your own advantage? I've never read a book that so clearly explains how it all works and what to do with it. 5 stars (Tremendous) - I wasn't familiar with the authors, but bought the book after reading the description and the amazing endorsements from the Dalai Lama and Stephen Covey. I was not disappointed! The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book explains and explores via great stories and profound research. It's fun to read and has an enormous variety of invaluable, fact-based information which helped me with relationships and my career. ...

How To Open Locks With Improvised Tools- Practical- Non-Destructive Ways Of Getting Back Into Just A

4 stars (Open Says Me) - This book is an extraordinary manual for emergency entry procedures. The directions are clear and concise, and the numerous illustrations are very helpful. This book can teach you how to bypass a lock with a bottle of bleach -- who knew ?? 5 stars (Far from easy ....) - I had been trying to open an old S&L moneybox for some time - the lock mechanism is "simple" per this book. Curiosity can be frustrating. I didn't want to spend any money on tools for a one off project (I ended up doing this and bought another book). The intellectual satisfaction was worth it. I'm interested in antiques so may get some payback for learning in the future. (I can now also open simple padlocks, and furniture locks, with an improvised tool in fairly quick time.) The information on getting into a locked car is easy to follow; I knew some of this before buying the book but the process will be easier in future. The stuff on handcuffs also appears straightforward - if you use them for business or pleasure - I don't - this could be worth reading. This is a practical book but hard work and requires practice. Worth reading if you have a real interest in locks and will practice. Not for beginers; I bought this book first then came back to it. 4 stars (Just about there.) - personally im only interested in picking locks and this book does help abit, but it focuses more on bypassing security systems and teaches you how. the paragraphing is kinda compact and so are the instructions and diagrams for me- someone with little technical background. a good read for the hot and lazy afternoon or those boring plane trips. ...

Some of the don'ts look like do's to me though, so I guess I need the book I found the accessories to be particularly fun and inspiring 4 stars (What Not Wear for Every Occasion) - Gives a great overview of how to dress with sytle and class. 1 stars (hard to decide which is worse) - the outfits they disdain or the outfits they recommend...both are generally impractical and/or in plain bad taste.Skip this one unless you can find it in the dollar bin and feel like lauughing at ugly clothes-there's a plethora here. ...

The Art of the Start - The Time-Tested- Battle-Hardened Guide for Anyone Starting Anything

5 stars (Outstanding!!) - Brilliant, BUY IT, learn from it. This book covers all the major stumbling blocks to growing a business from capital raising to giving a presenation. Whilst it should not be the only start-up book in an arsenal, it is almost certainly the best start. Combining an easy-to-read writing style with some real life experience, Kawasaki has written one of the best business books available at the moment. 5 stars (The Art of the Start by Guy Kawasaki) - This is an entrepreneur's bible. It is a complete guide to what matters for new entrepreneurs, and a great crib sheet for experienced entrepreneurs. 4 stars (Worth the (little) time and effort.) - This book was a quick and enjoyable refresher in a lot of what I felt like I knew before... which I say to mean, I didn't take life-altering proverbial knowledge with me when I was done... but it did renew my passion and focus my energies in the proper, productive direction.
