YOU- The Owner-s Manual - An Insider-s Guide to the Body that Will Make You Healthier and Younger

5 stars (Oz and Roizen make anatomy lessons entertaining and offer sound advice for staying healthy.) - `YOU: The Owner's Manual: An Insider's Guide to the Body that will Make You Healthier and Younger' is an interesting health book which teaches readers how the body works in relation to its anatomy and central systems, including hormonal, nervous, digestive, sensory organs, and immune. It also covers topics that deal with the brain, heart, digestive, reproductive glands, lungs, bones and joints. Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen have managed to make learning these topics both entertaining and enjoyable by including illustrations of pathogenic creatures whose role it is to portray illnesses that harm the body. There are also illustrations of benevolent elf creatures whose role it is to guide readers through different parts of the body in terms of names and functionalities. The authors have also incorporated a sense of humor, trivia, and a diet plan. In terms of humor, we have analogies between the activities of muscle cells when engulfing deceased heart tissue and the fighting that regularly presents itself on daily talk shows. In terms of trivia, the authors discuss the frequency at which one should have one's thyroid level checked. They reveal the quantity of air biscuit floatation produced by an average human per day. They also expose information regarding the quantity of times that most persons engage in intercourse. Finally, the authors invite their readers to try a 10-day, 30-recipe diet plan designed to benefit certain systems of the body such as that of immunity. This is an important book because not only does it mention how diseases start and the consequent effects that they have on one's body, but it also provides readers with advice on how to prevent or quash conditions that bear the potentiality to endanger the quality of their lives. Moreover, it also offers advice for ways to preserve the body's health and youthfulness, which in the long run, co...

Dress Your Best - The Complete Guide to Finding the Style That-s Right for Your Body

5 stars (Well Done!) - This book is the best of it's kind. It is simple and to the point. It's going to change the way I approach shopping for clothes. Stacy and Clinton work to make people look good no matter what their shape or weight or height or figure flaws. When I saw some of the pictures of people (in their underwear) I thought, "No way are they going to make this person look good!" But I was wrong every single time. The people look good. They look together. It made me feel good just to see the change. What I think Stacy and Clinton are about is that they want people to feel good about their bodies no matter what(or where) their problem areas are. What they show us in this book is that we all really can have our "outsides" match our "insides." 5 stars (Stacy and Clinton Don't Disappoint) - I was thrilled to see the American hosts of What Not To Wear co authored a book. The show is fabulous and the book lives up to that standard. First, the book helps you identify your body type not by using some fruit or obscure geometric shape but real world identifiers. The guidelines they use are so simple they make sense for those of us not so handy with a tape measure. Also, the book does not assume every one who is petite is a size 6. Guidelines are given for a variety of shapes, sizes and heights. It also shows you how to dress for work, play and formal occasions. My absolute favorite part is the pictures in the back of the book that show and tell (some fashion books assume you know what a bolero jacket looks like). No assumptions are made here this book provides pictures for everything the authors talk about or recommend which to me makes perfect sense. Fashion is so visual and at last there is a fashion book with actual pictures of real people wearing the right clothes instead of 3 or 4 cartoon drawings that supposedly represent human body shapes or pictures of the same two people who supposedly represent every figure flaw or asset. The South Beach Diet Cookbook- More than 200 Delicious Recipes That Fit the Nation-s Top Diet

4 stars (Good recipes for South Beach diet) - This book gives you other options that fit with all phases of the south beach diet. 5 stars (Eating Thin and Healthy Can Be Beautiful and Tasty!) - You will only be interested in this cookbook if you are a committed follower of The South Beach Diet. If you are an Atkins freak, go elsewhere! I lost 50 pounds on the South Beach Diet. To me, that accomplishment was less impressive than the fact that I couldn't lose weight on any diet before I tried this one. I think I had become insulin resistant, and everything I ate turned to fat . . . even when my calorie count was low. I found the diet appealing for some other reasons. First, I already ate a low fat diet and felt comfortable doing that. So I didn't have to change that part of my healthy eating. In fact, I was also being sure that I got "good" fats like omega-3 fatty acids from eating fish. Second, I could still eat carbs . . . I just had to avoid the ones that turn into instant blood sugar. Third, Dr. Agatston also introduced some new staples into my diet that I enjoy such as low-fat cheese snacks, having a few salty almonds, and eating steaming bowls of old-fashioned oatmeal. Fourth, and here's where the cookbook comes in, he introduced to me the idea of tasty, healthy ingredients I can use to spruce up simple foods. As a result, my cupboard has about twice as many spices as before (I love to put cinnamon on almost everything!) and my refrigerator has lots of new kinds of vegetables and fruits that I stir into all kinds of dishes. Suddenly, the ordinary becomes special and interesting! In this cookbook, Dr. Agatston once again calls on top chefs to show you how to make delicious, healthy dishes. Most recipes have fewer than 10 ingredients, and you probably already have most of them. The preparation and assembly are pretty straightforward. Even I can do these recipes! Each one also comes with nutritional descriptions of calories, saturated fat, protein,...

104 Activities That Build- Self-esteem- Teamwork- Communication- Anger Management- Self-discovery- a

5 stars (Great activities) - This book has great activities with great debriefs. The book is written in a simple to use style with clear directives on how to conduct each activity. The activities are easily modified to fit different age groups and teaching points. As a trainer/educator I enjoyed using the activities and am glad to have this book in my bag of tricks. 3 stars (Beware the duplication from her other book!) - I got this book becuase I liked JOnes' other book Team-building activities for Every Group. I was so disapointe to find a dozen or more of the activities exact duplicates of ones from the other book. Word-for-word. Other activiites in this book are good, just didnt like the covert deception that i was getting 104 activities when i already had purchased some of the once! 4 stars (teaching children) - My son's teacher works with this book in her classroom and I find it has been helpful in helping him learn to manage his anger. All children today should be introduced to all of the skills mentioned in Alanna Jones book. Self-esteem, communication, coping skills are vital to raising a peaceful generation of children. My son's teacher has also introduced lessons on stress-management and self-esteem with "The Children's Awareness Curriculum." I encourage schools and teachers to continue on this path of helping our children. ...

The Maker-s Diet- The 40 Day Health Experience That Will Change Your Life Forever

5 stars (Excellent) - The Maker's Diet book is not just "another diet book". First, this book is a guide to a change in overall eating habits and wellness for life. There IS a 40 day plan to follow to initially detoxify your system, and get on the right road to being healthier, however, this plan extends well past the 40 days. If you want a quick fix, extremt weight loss, simple book, this is not the book for you. If you want to look better, feel better, enhance your life from more than just a physical standpoint, and achieve your best possible total wellness- then buy this book! I have read the book, cooked the recipes, and done the 40 day plan. I have changed my eating habits, and my overall health in a relatively short time. Has it been easy? No. But is anything worth doing, really worth doing, easy? No. If you are tired of looking in the mirror and knowing you are not healthy, whether overweight, sickly, poor skin, etc- then try this plan- try it for 40 days. You can do anything for 40 days right? Yeah, you definately can. You will be glad you did. Your body will be glad you did, and anyone who knows you will see a difference. If you need to lose pounds- you will. If you need better health- you will achieve it. If you just want to feel better- that will happen. Remember- garbage in/garbage out. This book will guide you to replace garbage with good...good in/GREAT out. Here's to your health! =) 5 stars (Food for living as recommended by our designer!) - Jordan had advanced Crohn's Disease and was literally starving to death until he went to our designer Himself and looked in the Bible for God's widom regarding what our bodies can and cannot handle. He gained weight and got healthy using this diet; I was over-weight, but lost weight and got healthy using this diet. It comes complete with pages of "real food" recipes like "Easy Smothered Salmon", "Chicken with Oregano and Mushrooms", and "Family Roast Beef" for starters. There are recipes in this book for eve...

Lies Women Believe- And the Truth that Sets Them Free

4 stars (The Real Truth) - I think this is a good book for those people who are willing to take a deep look at themselves. I didn't agree with everything in the book, but many of the points that were made were eye openers. It might help, as well, for the less scholarly reader to have the workbook because a list of relevant scriptures aren't as readily available in the book. 3 stars (Almost great) - When I saw a book called "lies women believe" I thought my prayers had been answered! This book would have been ideal if they had left it at that but they had to go and spoil it with the nonsense about the truth that sets them free. A shame. 4 stars (Potentially Life Changing Book) - I had been a longtime listener to Nancy Leigh DeMoss's radio series (Revive our Hearts) on WAVA in the DC area and I finally picked up this book after hearing her talk about it for a long time. I loved the simple language and her forthrightness in going right to the heart of many of the 'lies' we believe today. And this book really hit home for me. I had known for some time that as Christians we are called to follow a different path than those who would live exclusively in the world and follow worldly ways. But no one before had ever specifically come out and said "When you buy into the American consumerist mentality that more things will make you happy, that is Satan speaking! That is a lie -- that you can find fulfillment in things! Only God's grace is sufficient for you! Christ alone can make you happy and to some degree, you will always feel unfulfilled until that day that you come home to His heavenly kingdom. Only there will you feel completely fulfilled." I absolutely LOVED the literary device that she used throughout the book. She starts each chapter with a letter from Eve to her friends, talking about the difficulties she has encountered since being thrown out of the garden of eden -- the difficulties with the children, the difficulties with her husband, her feelings of ...

Nice Girls Don-t Get the Corner Office- 101 Unconscious Mistakes Women Make That Sabotage Their Care

5 stars (A must read for any Woman in a "man's" world) - This book is beyond helpful, and is presented in a manner that allows the reader to not only evaluate herself, but to immediately put into action solutions to potential problems. Each chapter is broken down into subjects that can affect a woman's progress up the ladder, with a mistake listed on one page and solutions to apply to the workplace on the next. This is a no-nonsense book that is written by a woman for women, so "quit bein' a girl" and buy this book! The insight and results are more than impressive - they're life changing. 2 stars (Thinly Veiled Misogyny) - With all due respect to Dr. Frankel, I am a 37yr old professional who has been turned down many times for jobs well qualified for and promotions earned because I didn't either kiss the right butt, stab backs or play corporate cut-throat. And I'd hoped this book would help me figure out some way to either fix the problem or discover the root cause. And unfortunately, I walked away from this book feeling allot worse than before. So a warning before reading into it too far. Although Dr. Frankel coaches female professionals to become more successful in the workforce, this book has placing 101 `mistakes' strictly on our heads as a kind of `punishment' for being feminine. Meaning, she claims that we shouldn't act like men, but act less like young girls and more like women. All these mistakes being gleaned from childhood, everything you were taught was wrong and everything boys were taught was right. More than half these mistakes poignantly made several references toward (after working with thousands of women) finding more often than not, `men don't do this, but women do.' As the list went on, I got the distinct impression that there's absolutely no way I could possibly fit into this mould and considering her statement of the mistake of `quit aiming for perfection' then leaving the paradox of being perfect and imperfect at the same time. This b...

Winning With People - Discover the People Principles that Work for You Every Time

4 stars (Another Winner!) - First of all I want to confess that I am John Maxwell junkie. I not only thoroughly enjoy his books but they help me in becoming a better person. This book is written where every chapter is golden and yet able to stand alone. You can simply open the book to any chapter and it will enrich you. Even though the chapters are segmented into 5 logical sections. I especially liked the chapter entitled, "The Pain Principle: Hurting people hurt people and are easily hurt by them". This chapter increased my empathy and sensitivity for hurting people. It just makes sense that those that lash out are really hurting people. I gave this book 4 stars simply because his best work by far was, "21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership". As helpful as this book was I simply tried to read a chapter each evening before going to sleep. Like a nutritious light snack that won't keep you up all night. 4 stars (Impressed with reservations) - This is the second book I've read from John Maxwell. Overall, I found the book to be well written, personal, and filled with principles, explanations, and anecdotes. Each principle is explained in a manner that should strike a cord in many people. He supports the concept embodied by the principle with anecdotes, both personal and historical. If you are looking for a book to help with interpersonal relationships, this is a good book to to start with. John covers a lot of ground in this book. That would be my major criticism of the book. There are many, many strategies and approaches, and keeping track can get confusing. They are well organized. This will have to be a book that you refer back to as issues in your life come up and you are looking for help. I think Covey's work is more managable and priciple system oriented, but that shouldn't detract from John's work. There is an unlying system, but John's approach appears to be more of set of tools to help you, with each dealing with a specific type of problem. 5 stars (...

He-s Just Not That Into You- The No-Excuses Truth to Understanding Guys

5 stars (A huge smack of reminder) - Let's face it, we are not dumb. In the very deep core of our intuition and innate propensity, we know when someone isn't 'into you'. But because we are all born good beings and our instincts tells us to; first, believe and trust, we do get hurt. And continue to get hurt knowing we are hurting. Being both sympathetic and selfish, we fall into this little yet very dangerous hole called 'DENIAL'. This book is funny, painfully honest and a great smack of reminder to tell us 'we don't need to live with unhappiness and wonder if we really deserve it but embrace happiness and KNOW we deserve it. Absolutely love it. 1 stars (A sexist view of men) - If you truly believe that "Men are not complicated, although they'd like you to think they are" and "there are no mixed messages", as the product description echoes, this book may be for you-- but why do you need it? If men are so stupid, simple, and inferior, do you really need to buy a book to understand them? Men aren't dim simpletons, and you're not going to improve your understanding of them by treating them so. If you want to find and understand a man you can respect, look for books that at least respect men. ...

Healing the Shame That Binds You

2 stars (For shame) - What is the longevity of John Bradshaw's book, and how does his writing stand up in the perspective of time. The book was published over ten years ago, and it seems to have dropped through the cracks of the large and populous human growth floorboards, of which it was a part. The first thing I noticed about Bradshaw's writing is its sheer verbosity. He writes in a roundabout way, rather than concisely and to the point. Contrast him, for example, with a writer on Buddhism or Taoism (say, Alan Watts?). Writing on Buddhism or Taoism may provide authors with a natural impetus to be concise, but the human growth movement is broad and billowy, and concise writing may not be important to the authors. And Bradshaw seems to drag in every alley cat he ever heard meow in the human growth movement, to help him reflect on what he sees as the underlying principle of it all: Shame. Bradshaw reports that he is a theologian, but also someone who recovered from alcoholism, and was deeply shamed as a child, which shame he finally learned to deal with and overcome. There are many fine snippets from his book, which may be of use to folks, but overall, I think most people looking for direction are going to be repelled by his constant conceptualizations. To paraphrase another well-known quotation, "People cannot live on concepts alone." If he had given more personal studies or little case histories, it would have been much more helpful. Instead, he includes page after page of some "guided" meditations or shame inquiries, which were totally useless to me. If you are looking for guided meditations, this is the place for you. So, in all, Bradshaw's book does not hold up to scrutiny after time, in my opinion. It's one of the many from its era and niche that was forgotten and will be unlikely to remembered henceforth. Anyway, it was a bestseller once, and that's what counts, I guess. It did have its 15 minutes of fame, and a lot of books never even ...

Perfect Phrases for Performance Reviews - Hundreds of Ready-to-Use Phrases That Describe Your Employ

3 stars (Perfect Phrases for Performance Reviews .... Not!) - The background to giving appraisals is very good, as is the advice on how to conduct an interview. For this alone the book is worth purchasing. Included within this book are many pages of "perfect phrases". To state they are perfect is, I feel, a little misleading. Although I must mention that at the start of the book it is stated that these sentences should be altered to suit the individual. My gripe is that the sentences have not been rated very well. For example, on page 41 under Accuracy, Outstanding options provides you with "Mistakes don't slip through" as one of the choices. Should that not read, "Exceptionally accurate at all times". Many of the sentences are very weak and fail to use any "power words" to strengthen an employee's qualities. My feelings are that the book has been thrown together from previous appraisals with little though to the content of the phrases. The "sentences" require regrading and stronger words added to give them more bite. Also other attributes need to be added to give the book a wider audience such as: Loyalty, Sense of Duty, Competence, Confidence but to name a few. 5 stars (Phrases and a lot more) - Doing performance reviews--preparing for them, filling out the form, and understanding how to make them effectively improve an employee's performance--can be a challenging task. How do you make it a positive experience, for yourself and for the employee? It's not easy. How do you let the person know he or she is not living up to the organization's expectations? Again, not easy. This book can help in doing these things. The majority of book is given over to phrases you can use in over 70 different categories of performance. Each category has five levels of phrases, from outstanding to unacceptable. Even if some phrases don't fit exactly what you're looking for, you have a place to start and you can easily modify them to fit your purposes. I also like the first part of the b...

The Baptist Health Care Journey to Excellence - Creating a Culture that WOWs-

5 stars (Inspiring, Instructive, Energizing. Must Read.) - When Gordon Bethune, then President and CEO of Continental Airlines, wrote "From Worst to First" in 1999, executives in all fields were fascinated by his tale of how he turned around a company that many had given up for dead. He told the story and unquestionably his leadership was paramount in Continental's incredible success. Of course, as you might expect from a true leader, he shared the achievement with everyone in the organization. The tale of the turnaround, the awards, and the ongoing success helped thousands of executives and managers improve their operations. Now Al Stubblefield steps forward in his role as President and CEO of Baptist Health Care in Pensacola, Florida. When he assumed this leadership position in 1999, he faced major challenges...but he and his team were already on the journey to excellence. The picture was bleak when the transformation began in 1995: patient satisfaction was at an all-time low, morale was dangerously low. The 5,500 employees of this largest healthcare organization in northwest Florida worked together to become recognized by FORTUNE magazine as one of the 100 Best Places to Work, was recognized as an Employer of Choice?# , and received the Malcolm Baldrige Award in 2004. The story of how this was accomplished rivals the saga of Continental Airlines. The Baptist Health Care achievement ranks as one of the most valuable case studies you'll read. Stubblefield takes you on their journey, explaining what was done and how it was done. Examples and illustrations illuminate the text, making the path even easier to follow. Applying what you'll learn in these pages will empower you to move your organization, regardless of your field of endeavor, to substantially higher levels of performance. Read this book now...before your competitors do! ...

Insects That Feed on Trees and Shrubs

5 stars (Well worth it!) - This book is on my "short list" of essential references. Species are covered in clear, concise descriptions. This well organized volume makes hunting for similar species as easy as turning a page. The photos? I can't say enough about the clear, photos that make insect identification a good deal easier! While an excellent book for the landscape professional, scientist, or advanced gardener, beginners might be a bit overwhelmed by the technical language and scientific names. 5 stars (This is a much needed and fabulous manual.) - When trying to identify a particular problem with growing trees or shrubs knowing what kinds of insects are possible culprits is a major step. This book gives us, in color photos and descriptions, most of the common larvae that can be found feeding on the particular plants. Even Entomology texts often refuse to deal with larvae of insects, keeping only the adults in the keys and descriptions (even though the adults are often not pests!). This guide will be a welcome addition to any plant clinic, grower, or Entomology professor or student's bookshelf. ...
