Last Place on Earth

5 stars (This book is a timeless keepsake) - I highly recommend this book. The pictures are beautiful and some are disturbing. It truely tells the amazing story of Africa. 5 stars (An Extraordinary Treasure) - This "boxed set", consisting of a large case containing two extraordinary books, is one of the most satisfying purchases I have ever made. In case you don't know, here is the background on the " Last Place on Earth ": Mike Fay is a scientist with the Wildlife Conservation Society who, outraged at destruction Congo Basin forests, decided to walk across the heart of Africa in order to document the undisturbed wild before it was lost. Over a year later, after innumerable hardships, wonders and adventures, Fay finally emerged from the forest to the waters of the Atlantic, ready to report back to the world what he had learned. Fay's stories and Nichols' photographs of this "megatransect" were so affecting that Gabon's president, in an unprecedented boon to world conservation, decided that his country's forests had value beyond their timber and designated vast tracts of Gabon as new national parks. The first and much larger of the two books in this set, contains at least 100 full-color, full-page photographs of the landscapes, animals and peoples of the African forests. The photographs are amazing: gritty and beautiful. They are the closest thing to being there. The second book contains black and white photos of Fay and his troop as they make their way across the Congo, and text by Fay himself. We learn how Fay came to be infatuated with saving the wilds as a teenager at a Maine summer camp, and how he came up with the idea of the megatransect, how he endured it, and how he was able to use such a "stunt" to create enormous changes in Gabon. In the end, Fay seems to be the environmental version of Gandhi: gaunt, with a line in his eyes, an unbreakable will, and a singular focus on protecting what is most precious to him: wild nature. If the nearly, $1...

Systems Engineering Principles and Practice

5 stars (Excellent SE text and reference) - I have just completed the JHU program in Systems Engineering. This book is the foundation for the curriculum and is a very readable, solid overview of Systems Engineering. All phases of the system life-cycle are introduced and tied together to truly illustrate the process. The book focuses on processes, the tools used will change, but good Systems Engineering will stay the same. The process to derive good requirements that are able to be implemented and tested are the same regardless of technology or field. ...

The Organic Chem Lab Survival Manual - A Student-s Guide to Techniques

5 stars (cheap price, good condition) - book had no highlighting or writing in it. cover was somewhat bent when delivered but not too bad. all in all, a good buy. 4 stars (language of the text) - The manner in which the text is written is very helpful to those like myself who are new to Organic Chemstry; however, the referals to Chapter... for this and Chapter...for more information on this, makes it difficult to read the actual text sometimes. 1 stars (This book sucks!) - I had to buy this book for my Organic Class and I hate it! If I am going to pay textbook prices for a book, I expect it to be professionally written, not shifting into first and second person and speaking in sentence fragments. I was supposed to keep it for 2nd semester, but I hated it so much I sold it back after first semester was over. What a waste of money. ...

The One Minute Manager Anniversary Ed - The World-s Most Popular Management Method

5 stars (Got a minute?) - A simple, straightforward story that provides handy advice for anyone who has to manage people. To boot, most should be able to finish it in a few hours time. Truly a classic, I give it 5 stars easy. Other self-help books I liked include "The No-Beach, No-Zone, No-Nonsense Weight Loss Plan, A Pocket Guide To What Works. Happy reading! 5 stars (Must read for anyone) - This book is a must read for everyone whether they are a boss, parent or just someone who is interested in becoming more effective in their life. This book as well as the others by these authors ("The Present" and "Who Moved my Cheese") contain powerful messages with an economy of words, they are all around 100 pages each. I have read everything I can find by them and have shared them with family and friends. 5 stars (simple and direct) - This smart little book is easy to read and goes straight to the point. As its title suggests, it can be read quickly and you'll be able to benefit from its teaching right away, which makes it a good example in itself for a book on time management and productivity. There's no groundbreaking concepts or magical tricks here, but it will remind you of a few essentials that can make all the difference... ...

How to Buy- Sell- - Profit on eBay- Kick-Start Your Home-Based Business in Just Thirty Days

5 stars (info galore) - This book is a kick-start. It gives you a great desire to get started and a belief that you can do this. Reading it once will not be enough if you want to truly learn all that is offered in this book. 5 stars (One of the best books of the year!) - "How to Buy, Sell and Profit" is, in my opinion, one of the best business books of 2005. This book has insight, education, humor and is easy to read. The information is logically outlined and contains value to both the beginner and advanced eBay seller. Essentially the book is written in story format and not like a textbook, which is what makes it so easy to follow and understand. eBay is a great opportunity for people to make a lot of money, or just get rid of some stuff in their house. In "How to Buy, Sell & Profit on eBay" I learned how best use eBay to apply to my situation. I highly recommend this book. It's the best book I've ever read on the subject of eBay - and one of the best business books I've read this year! 5 stars (Don't miss out on your chance to finally start your eBay business. Get this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) - I have been buying from eBay for years and I have really enjoyed. I've never had a bad experience. I always wondered what it would be like to 'sell' as well. This book was recommended to me by a fantastic marketer called Bill Glazer. I have a lot of respect for him. Anyway I bought the book as Bill advised and it's really great. It gives fantastic advice on how to get started fast. It really would drive you to ACTION. A few days after reading it I sold my first product.Adam lay's out everything very clearly. I followed Adam's advice and started selling things lying around the house and up in the attic. My son Neil 'tied' down his two fairly large fish tanks incase I sold them as well.;-) I've now progressed to selling three products and the tests are proving very positive. This book will really get you fired up and you will be very enthusiastic after read...

The Leadership Challenge- 3rd Edition

5 stars (Great Leadership Guide) - This is an excellent read for any executive in any discipline. From software to pharma, this book has great hands on information on how to lead your organization to its greatest potential. 5 stars (Good book) - Very thorough book - goes through the practices and commitments thoroughly and provides good examples. 5 stars (An inspirational and practical handbook) - There are dozens of outstanding books on leadership and this is one of the best. With clarity and insight, Kouzes and Posner zero in on the basics: five fundamental practices of leadership, ten commitments these practices embody, and the day-to-day action steps each commitment entails. The book also includes dozens of case studies that illuminate these concepts in real world action. "...probably the best book I've ever seen on leadership. The authors do a great job at differentiating leaders and managers. I highly recommend it to people who are interested in becoming leaders!!!..." "....For leaders who have been in that vocation for some time, this book serves as a refresher...." ...

Leadership and the One Minute Manager - Increasing Effectiveness Through Situational Leadership

5 stars (Clear and simple book on situational leadership) - I am a fan of the One Minute Manager series, having read "The One Minute Manager" and the "The One Minute Manager Meets the Monkey." This book tells the story of an "entrepreneur" who seeks advice from the One Minute Manager. In the process, it covers the basics of situational leadership in a concise, easy to read style. The text covers the four basic leadership styles -- directing, coaching, supporting, and delegating. It also discusses matching a leadership style appropriate for various development levels. Like the other One Manager Manager books, I see myself re-reading and referencing this text. Highly recommended. 4 stars (Treat Right!) - Always a great fan of Ken Blanchard, I find this book with its Teaching Techniques to the Leaders who need to understand the basic style of 'Treat Right' to its employees and not walk blind to the belief 'Everyone should be treated Equally'. One Minute Manager hit the stands but this book has additional skills to increasing Effectiveness through situational leadership. The authors focus on enhanced motivation to individual employees and apply better management skills to get the most desired results from them. To begin with 'Goal Setting' brings in a commitment for accompliment and make the individual understand their duties to reach target goals. Written in a conversational manner, easy to read and understand, the book makes manager bring out the best by 'Be competitive and commited' motto. Like a stand-by Guide to Leaders, the contents help Leaders to derive best performance. How to delegate, support and direct them is the key factor that nevertheless motivates for better fruitful results. Apart from this book, I also recommend 'First Break All the Rules'. A good Pick for any Leader and to be used as quick reference and must to be on office-bookshelf. Nice Guide. 5 stars (Getting the basics right) - Even though it is a quick read this book still is a very worth...

The New Clay- Techniques and Approaches to Jewelry Making

5 stars (The Book that started it all for Polymer Clay) - It was the first book about PC. It was the only book available for quite some time. Many of the most renowned PC artists started with this book and you can see the influence in their work. I have just about every PC book there is and this one has some of the best explanations of the underlying basic methods available. Sort of like the "alphabet" of PC. I reread it often. I consider it a reference book rather than a project book. I have seen another very new PC enthusiast buy the book and dislike it (as a previous reviewer mentioned.) I think this comes from someone making a cursory review of the pictures in the book and deciding that is not what they want to make. I think they may have missed the trees for the forest. There is a lot of depth there. I highly recommend it for anyone serious about learning polymer clay. 1 stars (Disappointed) - I am extremely disappointed with this book. I bought it because I thought it would provide more ideas for "Jewelry Making"-it did not. When this book arrived, I had been working with polymer clay for 4 days and I learned nothing from the book that I had not figured out for myself, with the exception of how to make weird naked women from clay-not quite was a looking for.A waste of [money]. 5 stars (I worship this book!!!) - If you want to learn to make canes this is your Bible. It is not limited to cane but its step by step guide to all the different types is terrific. I must look at it several times a week. Love it. ...

Introduction to Organic Laboratory Techniques- A Microscale Approach

5 stars (Book in great shape) - Book is flawless, not even scratches on the cover, cannot remember promptness of delivery. 4 stars (Excellent Lab Text But Not Everyone Has To Buy It) - Though a complete laboratory text with 50+ experiments, lab techniques, tables of unknowns and spectroscopy, the organic faculty prepare our own lab manual to be followed. Pavia text becomes a close handy reference for lab techniques and setup. The techniques section, which include filtration, crystallization, distillation (simple, fractional, and steam), chromatogrpahy (column, thin-layer, and gas)... should be carefully studied before conducting experiments for beginning students. Unless your organic lab course follows almost exactly the outline of experiments in this text, you can check it out from the library and read it. 5 stars (Best organic laboratory manual available!) - I have taken a full course using this book and I think that it is the best one I have seen! Organic chemistry is a hard subject and this book lays it out in an understandable way. The "techniuques" section is current, readable, and the pictures are well done. The essays that accompany many of the experiments are entertaining and give good background information that helps doing the experiments more enjoyable. Probably the best section is the "identification of unknowns" section which lays out in a good logical way how to identify what you have in the lab. I think that the book also addresses and promotes a great trend in chemistry i.e. microscale research that reduces waste and promotes conservation of chemicals and the environment. ...

Introduction to Organic Laboratory Techniques - A Small-Scale Approach Brooks-Cole Laboratory Serie

1 stars (Introduction to Organic Laboratory Techniques : A Small-Scale Approach (Brooks/Cole Laboratory Series for Organic Chemistry)) - It has taken this company a month to even send this book. It is quite amazing how slow this company and how it treats its customers. Do not expect books to come unless you want to wait til the book become a classic. Highly suggest to purchase from someone else. Luckly, I've been using a book from lab TA for my organic lab class. 5 stars (WWU grad) - Dr. Pavia's class was so much fun. It was great to have a book written for our facility, by our instructors. I recommend this book to other schools because the techniques are clearly explained and the experiments are interesting. 4 stars (Don't sell this book back!) - An outstanding lab text for sophomore level 1-yr organic courses. Any chemistry/physical science major should not sell this book back at the end of the semester! Half of the book is dedicated to experiments which while informative is not the real gem here. The other half of the book covers techniques in organic and microscale chemistry. If you ever need to build a chromatographic column or do vacuum filtration again, you will be glad that you kept this book in your library. The techniques section alone justifies buying this book. Chemistry majors, microbiologists, environmental scientists and engineers will all find this text valuable in their future careers. ...

Management

5 stars (THIS IS A TERRIFIC TEXT!) - An excellent introduction to management theory and practices. Major subjects are economic and social environment, planning, organizing, leading, and controlling, each containing key topics such as motivation and teamwork. Each chapter offers examples (provided as embedded boxes), begins with study questions to provide learning objectives and an opening headline, and concludes with an excellent summarization of key points, a self-test that is in depth and challenging, and a listing of key terms. Do's and don'ts of managerial behavior are highlighted. Photos and diagrams add color and clarity. There are also career development tools, cases and exercises, research projects, and management skills assessments linked to each chapter and available online and in interactive format at a website. A website has been developed in support of this text. Includes CD-ROM and a good glossary. THIS IS A TERRIFIC TEXT! Mindfulness and Psychotherapy

5 stars (A special collection about nothing special) - As a psychotherapist for 30 years and a mindfulness practitioner for nearly 10 years, I have read a lot of good books and articles on both subjects. " Mindfulness and Psychotherapy " is as clear and helpful in both disiplines as any I have encounted. The editors have done a 'mindful' job in selecting from an array of perspectives. Mindfulness is defined and contextualized for our western psychotherapeutic practice, while also placed in an historical and cultural framwork that informs and enlightens our understanding. Indeed the more philosophical essays are perhaps the strongest pieces in this marvelous compendium. We are reminded that the Buddah saw himself as a physician who sought to diagnose and find a cure for human suffering. Out of his own intimate encounter with suffering, he devised and revised a program that we in western psychological science are just now testing and finding curative-both for our clients and for ourselves. There is much here to be considered by all schools of psychotherapy. Paul Fulton presents an intriguing chapter on Mindfulness as Clinical Training. There are concise chapters on teaching mindfulness skills to clients (even children)with varying disorders, including panic, anxiety, depression, and psychophysiological problems. There is a comprehensive while managable 'Resources for the Clinician" appendix. Andrew Olendzki deserves special mention for his piece on "The Roots of Mindfulness." I had to stop highlighting as each page was yellowed with brightness. If you are a psychotherapist, a meditator, or thinking of practicing either, you will do well to read this wonderful book. ...

The Courage to Teach - Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher-s Life

2 stars (Not typical style) - I have heard many speak highly of the book, but I just don't get it. There is passion in his style and his delivery encouraging teachers to maintain integrity, to stay true to themselves, and so forth. I guess that I lose interest due to the verbose language used. There are many aspects to teaching, and it is a lot of work; I am not equating this aspect to success or failure for connection with the students. As I said, many that I have spoken to enjoy it... I don't. 5 stars (The Courage to Teach - Palmer) - The book was in excellent condition. The box was partially opened, but the product unharmed. Audrey 4 stars (for any educator at any grade level!) - I read this for a graduate school assignment. It is a good book. Parker believes that classrooms should be subject-centered, not student-centered. It is very interesting why he states this. I actually liked the book the second time I read it. He goes on about not losing your identity while you teach and about not copying techniques that are not true to yourself. He gives a lot of insightful information. I recommend it to anyone in the field of education. I actually think I appreciated it more due to the fact that I have teaching experience. ...

Let Your Life Speak- Listening for the Voice of Vocation

5 stars (Discernment for "part two" of life) - Our women's circle is studying this book together. We are middle-aged and over but are looking at a time of growth in this next part of our life-journey. The book is helping us to let our lives speak to each other and to ourselves. 5 stars ("Ask me whether what I have done is my life." (1)) - I got this book some time ago, when one of the professors at BC recommended it to me as a way to think about what I wanted to do with my life and of course, I never read it. However, I'm almost glad that I didn't read it until now, because at this point in my life I think I needed it more than I did when I was choosing a path. Palmer is basically telling his own story of vocation, including all the dark spots that he hit along the way. However, he emphasizes the need to see the good and the possibilities for growth in those dark spots. For example, in the final chapter he compares life to the changing seasons in an extended metaphor. For winter, he says, "Despite all appearances, of course, nature is not dead in winter--it has gone underground to renew itself and prepare for spring. Winter is a time when we are admonished, and even inclined, to do the same for ourselves" (101). His main point is that in order to do this (renew ourselves for growth in our vocation), each person should learn to listen to their inner self because that is the only way that we will truly become the full person that God created us to be. He does frequently refer to religious ideas like this but, the nice thing about his writing is even though he is religious, this idea does not overwhelm the book and it can really be for anyone (though I'm sure that an atheist might not get as much out of this as a religious person would). This book helped me to look at my life and see if I could discover what my "inner self" has been trying to tell me, even in times of my darkness and "winter", about my vocation. 5 stars (Palmer is the Real Deal) - I generally make not...
