5 stars (This book is a timeless keepsake) - I highly recommend this book. The pictures are beautiful and some are disturbing. It truely tells the amazing story of Africa. 5 stars (An Extraordinary Treasure) - This "boxed set", consisting of a large case containing two extraordinary books, is one of the most satisfying purchases I have ever made. In case you don't know, here is the background on the " Last Place on Earth ": Mike Fay is a scientist with the Wildlife Conservation Society who, outraged at destruction Congo Basin forests, decided to walk across the heart of Africa in order to document the undisturbed wild before it was lost. Over a year later, after innumerable hardships, wonders and adventures, Fay finally emerged from the forest to the waters of the Atlantic, ready to report back to the world what he had learned. Fay's stories and Nichols' photographs of this "megatransect" were so affecting that Gabon's president, in an unprecedented boon to world conservation, decided that his country's forests had value beyond their timber and designated vast tracts of Gabon as new national parks. The first and much larger of the two books in this set, contains at least 100 full-color, full-page photographs of the landscapes, animals and peoples of the African forests. The photographs are amazing: gritty and beautiful. They are the closest thing to being there. The second book contains black and white photos of Fay and his troop as they make their way across the Congo, and text by Fay himself. We learn how Fay came to be infatuated with saving the wilds as a teenager at a Maine summer camp, and how he came up with the idea of the megatransect, how he endured it, and how he was able to use such a "stunt" to create enormous changes in Gabon. In the end, Fay seems to be the environmental version of Gandhi: gaunt, with a line in his eyes, an unbreakable will, and a singular focus on protecting what is most precious to him: wild nature. 5 stars (The Leadership Solution) - Jim Shaffer's book, The Leadership Solution, is a MUST READING both for all corporate communications executives and staff and CEOs. Nobody does a better job in the age of "High Tech" to remind us to use the "High Touch." If we take the points that Jim cites, then we will find that attrition will be decreased. Jim reminds us throughout that employee communications and touch will make the difference in performance and thus, stock price and a competitive and "best in class" company. Shaffer lays out clearly the VISION aand STRATEGY. We all need to follow his course of what he states. "A vision is a target, a picture of the future. A strategy is a roadmap, how you're going to achieve the vision." Tools are excellent. Follow the Readiness questionnaire to improving performance. See if we can all master the 6 course process to connect people or employees or associates to the business strategy. Shaffer identifies the 20 things to generate commitment. He cites the "3 people principles" that guide Best Practices and the Best Performance. With all the focus on Mergers and Acquisitions, we find that Shaffer's 9 Guildelines for negotiating through the M&A are excellent. Shaffer's examples of CEOs help build the case. His messages will help any communications chief help your CEO. Shaffer demonstrates vividly how and why the communication function is being reinvented. The last chapter embodies the message strongly. It means what we all learn that communications much be align to assist the company's strategic goals. Shaffer does it. The selections are for the most part diverse, encompassing Native-American, African-American, Canadian, and English writers. Short fiction, poetry, drama, non-fiction and, to a more limited degree, film get a fairly decent treatment here, too, encompassing chronolical - literature from the classical to the contemporary period is treated - and thematic terrain, making this a worthwhile text for students who simply want a brief introduction to all aspects of English. Still, it is a bit unwieldly, and too often feels less like a solid anthology, and more like an 'English-for-beginners' type deal. You get what you pay for, I guess. ...

The FairTax Book- Saying Goodbye to the Income Tax and the IRS

1 stars (The Cato Institute Objects to the national ales tax idea) - No doubt HR 25 has been studied by the best of minds; the Cato Institute is a non-profit public policy research foundation (think tank) headquartered in Washington, D.C. Here are four potent objections it lists to the national sales tax: Objection 1. The sales tax is regressive. The rebate feature of the national sales tax makes this proposal nonregressive. Remember, a family of four would pay no tax on its first $20,000 of purchases each year. This is the equivalent of a zero bracket under the income tax. It is similar to the Armey personal deduction--though not as generous. There are various ways of providing this rebate. Assuming that the sales tax were set at 18 percent, a family of four would be entitled to a rebate of $3,600 ($20,000 x 18 percent) for the year. The government could send a quarterly rebate check of $900 to every family of four; a $450 check to every family of two; and so on. Another possibility would be to provide every family with an annual "smart card" that would have a sales tax credit based on family size. A married couple with no kids would receive a $10,000 credit on its card. Each time the couple made a purchase, the smart card would deduct that amount until the card's $10,000 credit was used up. After the first $10,000 of purchases, the family would begin to pay the sales tax. So it dead wrong to argue that a sales tax is inherently regressive. Objection 2: A sales tax of 18 percent would entail large- scale evasion. A national sales tax of 18 percent, when added to the existing states sales taxes, would bring the total sales tax to between 20 and 25 percent. Critics are right when they argue that a sales tax this high would encourage evasion. But compared to what? Evasion is already a huge problem with the income tax. 4 stars (Next best thing to a crystal ball) - Harry Dent has a good track record in calling the larger movements and turn-arounds in the stock market and other investments. He uses both fundamentals (e.g. demographics) as well as technical (i.e. charts) to predict what will happen in the stock market, housing prices, oil prices, etc. No one can predict the future prefectly but Dent appears to have a better crystal ball than almost anyone else. I know for sure it's better than mine. I will be making some changes in my investment strategies based on this, but I will also keep an eye out for if things aren't materializing the way he projects. The main negative I have with this booklet is it is very repetitious. 5 stars (Fascinating) - More than ever, a degree in economics is required in order to make sense of the macroeconomic forces shaping our world. 2 stars (Nothing is roaring, DJI has been flat since 2001) - Dow Jones is still going through its major corrections after the roaring 80s and then the 90s. We are experiencing the same cylical phase that happened in the 70s - when war, energy crises, international market expansions, and demographic changes were gradually driving the economy to a malaise. The main difference is that the country was in little debt 30 years ago. We are now owing other countries trillions of dollars, and the trade deficit will continue to soar. The economy may sink as a result, but it has nothing to do with bubble bursting. That was already done in the stock market years ago. Should the economy finally collapse, it will have to do with our structural economic problems. Most probably prefer a soft-landing rather than a hard collapse. It will take some sacrifice and some political leadership to achieve a peaceful and endurable transition. It will be about our committment to paying down the debt, ending our oil dependence, and educating the workforce to take on the jobs of the new century that are not to be "outsourced" to other places. 5 stars (Writing Beyond Genre) - Most of what Kim Stanley `Stan' Robinson writes is classified as science fiction. His works also often wear the label `literary,' but I read a little bit of everything, including unliterary science fiction, so I think dispensing with labels would be appropriate at this point. Stan's novels are the works of a writer with broad interests and a penchant for accuracy, so getting into his head through the Amazon Shorts titled "Imagining Abrupt Climate Change: Terraforming Earth" was lots of fun. In this 20 page electronic download, Stan lets us in on the genesis of his current project, a near future trilogy [including Forty Signs Of Rain and the soon to be released Fifty Degrees Below] that has the Earth descending into a sudden cold period. He relates connections to his personal interests and two previous novels [Green Mars from the Mars trilogy and the stand alone Antarctica, which he wrote after being part of the Antarctic Artists and Writers' program]. There are several methods for reading the piece, and other than a few typos, I really enjoyed "Imagining Abrupt Climate Change" and look forward to pieces by other authors in the Amazon Shorts series - a series I hope is long term and will not abruptly end. 5 stars (Nobody makes 'boring science' as interesting as KSR does) - I'm of the belief one should never pass up the chance to read anything Mr. Robinson publishes. His prose is like the crispest poetry, but without poetry's pretentiousness. This essay, like his fiction, presents theories without shying away from the difficult task of giving the reasons why they're worth considering -- even when it means explaining concepts from paleontology, climatoly, and other similarly unglamorous sciences. It is an engaging read that will help those eagerly awaiting "Fifty Degrees Below" bide their time until that novel's release while also helping to understand the author's motivation and thought process. The rest of the book is laid out in easy to understand language that can make you understand why people think the way they think. As a professional business executive I had to give this book the highest rating. It is well worth the money and should be added to your library. 5 stars (continuation of Cialdini's Influence) - I was extremely captivated by Cialdini's Influence: Science and Practice, which is one of the best read book ever on the subject of influence. i have read many other influence and persuation books since. this one is the best, and should be a requiered reading to extend the original cialdini's book. while cialdini's book is more simple and clear with the 6 weapons, this one is more rich and expanded to various details of the influence. Basically, the book is about how people react to certain situation and how we can maximise our effort. people are more emotional rather than rational. how the same offering can be arranges to be more attractive. Each technique will yield a lot of success if we can smartly apply it to our daily life. Hogan took a lot of various sources materials and put them together, along with his own research, into this wonderful book. If you are a salesperson, negotiator, leader, or person with anything to do with people, you should read this and try out some of the techniques explained. My book has been read and re read and flipped and marked, and i have used a lot of the materials for my seminars, and i still love this book and re read it often.
