CCNA 1 and 2 Companion Guide- Revised Cisco Networking Academy Program 3rd Edition Cisco Networ

2 stars (Poorly written) - I am using this book in a CCNA semester 1 class. Although it is by Cisco and therefore contains the information they want you to know, it is poorly written. It is as if the original text were 3 times as long, and to shorten it, they had to take out every third sentence, because it does not flow, and concepts are often only half-explained. I am *often* reading it and think "What????" (And I'm fairly certain it's not just me - I have a B.S. and M.S in Computer Science and plenty of real-world computer experience). All in all, I have to say that this is not a high-quality book. Although it's not a substitute for the CCNA material, I really like the book called "Interconnections" by Radia Perlman. 5 stars (An Excellent Companion) - Cisco seems to have made a transition from being a high performance workstation and server supplier to being a supplier of high end networking equipment. It seems like you cannot go into an Internet Service Provider without seeing at least some Cisco equipment. As such, being an authority on Cisco equipment and even more important understanding the Cisco approach to networking is a good start on employment. And the crowning achievement is the Cisco Certified Network Associate certificate. This book is a companion to the on line course. Troubleshooting Campus Networks- Practical Analysis of Cisco and LAN Protocols

5 stars (Good book for network admins) - My overall impression was that this is a great book. I felt that the first chapter was unnecessary detail, and sort of seemed like chest thumping to me. I find this book to be an excellent reference about just about all aspects of LAN communications. I was not impressed with the WAN protocols however. I sort of expected more of that, as you might find in a Campus network. I keep this book handy, and often find myself using it as a reference when I am unsure of a conclusion I have drawn. I recommend this book to anyone looking for reference material. 5 stars (A myth-shattering, authoritative and enlightening title) - I'm sad I waited so long to read this excellent book. "Troubleshooting Campus Networks" (TCN) was published in Jul 2002, and it belongs on every network administrator's shelf -- now! This is the best networking book since Scott Haugdahl's "Network Analysis and Troubleshooting" and Eric Hall's "Internet Core Protocols." TCN will truly test your networking knowledge; you'll quickly validate the truth and discard the fiction. So many books discuss networks, but somehow distort subtle points. Authors Oppenheimer and Bardwell know their material inside-out and explain key points in clear, concise prose. Ever hear of the "37% utilization rule for Ethernet?" It's false. Think that TCP sequence numbers count packets? Wrong -- they count bytes of data. And why are sequence numbers seemingly "off by one?" Look at the difference between ordinal and cardinal numbers, described in ch. 9. TCN displays an uncanny ability to include just the information that is needed. "Reversible half-ASCII," which accounts for odd-looking NetBIOS traces, appears in ch. 12. The sections on Windows networking are first-rate, with helpful comparisons of NetBIOS with IPX, TCP, and NetBEUI. Demystifying the IPsec Puzzle

5 stars (You must own this book if you want to learn this topic..) - If you want to learn or research on this topic, this is the book you should read. In adddition, the writing style is excellent! 5 stars (Outstanding) - This book is simply outstanding. IPsec is a complicated topic, but this book explains it clearly while not losing any of the essential detail. As one previous reviewer said, you might need to read it more than once to really get a good grasp of the subject, but it is only 250 pages long (and small enough and light enough to carry in your laptop case pocket)! Don't get this book if you are looing for a 'Dummies..' kind of approach, but definately do get it if you really want to understand IPsec. So, five stars from me for the hardback edition (sounds like the electronic edition might be too much trouble [from what I read in a previous review]!). 1 stars (Don't buy this!!!) - Do not buy this book!!! I got royally hosed on this. Since it's in E-Book format, you download it to your computer. You cannot print it, and you cannot transfer it to another machine. I wanted to rebuild my machine, but I can't because I will lose the $... book. They give you instructions on how to transfer the book to a new computer, but the publisher says to talk to Adobe, and Adobe says to talk to the publisher. I've been running around in circles!!! Supposedly the software recognizes the layout and config of your hard drive, so if you change it, the book will not be readable. What a rip-off. I understand completely that the publisher doesn't want people passing around free copies of their book, but hey, now I'm stuck not being able to change my computer, upgrade my hard drive, etc. If you don't care, and the $... is expendible to you, then go for it, but don't ever plan on changing your system. I hope you never need more hard drive space. ...

SIP- Understanding the Session Initiation Protocol

2 stars (OK but could be much better written) - The information contains in the book makes it a pretty good primer on SIP. The organization of the book and its content is very good. The language and ways in which the author explains certain things are confusing. I think the author should be able to do a much better job in explaining things. I often find myself having to re-read certain explainations twice and much carefully when I feel I shouldn't have to -- the topics are not complicated but not well explained. Someone like Doug Comer or Richard Stevens would probably be able to make it a much easier read. 4 stars (Costly, but a great introduction to SIP) - Really enjoyed this book - easy to read, and the examples emphasized the points he was trying to make. The only negative is the cost of the book ... I got mine from the library, and was shocked to see how much this was selling for. After you understand SIP, this would be a decent reference book, but not the best. 3 stars (Just an introduction to the SIP RFC) - This book simply summarizes some of the SIP RFC into more user-friendly english. It consists mostly of lists of SIP headers and error codes, lifted from the RFC. There is no sample code or discussion of SIP applications or architecture. Of course, the RFC is pretty hefty, so this book has been a useful introduction. I still use the RFC as my real reference, though, because there are some minor discrepancies between the book and the RFC, such as some error code names. ...
