5 stars (This book is a timeless keepsake) - I highly recommend this book. The pictures are beautiful and some are disturbing. It truely tells the amazing story of Africa. 5 stars (An Extraordinary Treasure) - This "boxed set", consisting of a large case containing two extraordinary books, is one of the most satisfying purchases I have ever made. In case you don't know, here is the background on the " Last Place on Earth ": Mike Fay is a scientist with the Wildlife Conservation Society who, outraged at destruction Congo Basin forests, decided to walk across the heart of Africa in order to document the undisturbed wild before it was lost. Over a year later, after innumerable hardships, wonders and adventures, Fay finally emerged from the forest to the waters of the Atlantic, ready to report back to the world what he had learned. Fay's stories and Nichols' photographs of this "megatransect" were so affecting that Gabon's president, in an unprecedented boon to world conservation, decided that his country's forests had value beyond their timber and designated vast tracts of Gabon as new national parks. The first and much larger of the two books in this set, contains at least 100 full-color, full-page photographs of the landscapes, animals and peoples of the African forests. The photographs are amazing: gritty and beautiful. They are the closest thing to being there. The second book contains black and white photos of Fay and his troop as they make their way across the Congo, and text by Fay himself. We learn how Fay came to be infatuated with saving the wilds as a teenager at a Maine summer camp, and how he came up with the idea of the megatransect, how he endured it, and how he was able to use such a "stunt" to create enormous changes in Gabon. In the end, Fay seems to be the environmental version of Gandhi: gaunt, with a line in his eyes, an unbreakable will, and a singular focus on protecting what is most precious to him: wild nature. 4 stars (the truth about cats and dogs) - workman has another success for animal lovers and those who just like to mock stupid dogs---essentially the entire population of literate people can appreciate the humour of these images. better than Bad Cat! 3 stars (Liked Fixed Mix Seeks Same better! ) - Although I enjoyed flipping thru this book, my favorite book of this genre is Fixed Mix Seeks Same, which is personal ads "written" by dogs. Not only does Fixed Mix... have superior photos, it's really a fun read. Overall, I say the more dog books the better! 5 stars (Thurber-worthy) - Ridiculous and wonderful. Silly dogs of all shapes and sizes...don't leave it out on the table if you don't want to be giggling all day. ...

1 stars (Highly Disappointing) - Much too vague to be called the complete guide. A few helpful techniques are included but for the most part it was a huge disappointment. Think I will stay with the tried and true collage artists who are well versed in sharing their knowledge. 5 stars (Incredible artist, amazing book!) - I was so excited when I heard Karen Michel was writing her first book and was willing to share her incredible photo altering techniques with us. These techniques will get you to break out all your old and not quite "perfect" photos and will help you turn them into amazing works of art. The instructions are clear and the graphic design is beautiful! This book has a permanent place with my other favorites on my night stand so I can look at it again and again! - claudine hellmuth author, Collage Discovery Workshop and Collage Discovery Workshop:Beyond the Unexpected 5 stars (Layering, texture and the pleasures of distress.) - Here is a visual feast of lush painterly textures and fabulous vibrant coats of color upon gesso upon color, and while I am for the most part completely satisfied with the amount of how-to information and the spare style of presentation, it was obvious to me from the beginning that artists not previously experienced in paint materials or not as familiar with the use of paint and gesso in a book format might be a little disappointed with the very sparsity of step by step photos that I'm actually a little relieved to be skipping over this time. If you've had some art classes or are fairly familiar with common AB techniques and have perused the other AB how-to books and maybe keep up with threads on blogs or mailing lists about popular materials, chances are you won't be left behind by Michel's straightforward but not intensively detailed instructions. This is not a book where you follow A to B to C to instant "Karen Michel" art. There are progressive photos of steps, but not in the same minute way we've come to expect steps ...
