Organization Theory and Design

1 stars (Didn't receive what I paid for) - The seller advertised that they had a hardcover version and I recieved a paperback, international version.....False advertising!!!!!! 5 stars (The learning book) - " Organization Theory and Design " is a book every corporate member that has aspirations to better understand and contribute to his organization should own. I used this book studying a basic course of organizational behavior after the professor had referred to it as "the best text on the market". I found out he was right - the book is extremely well-written and its contribution to my understanding of the subject is invaluable. As it happened, I partly read older versions of the book to find out how every few years Daft updates his analysis, insights and examples of the ever changing and evolving world of organizations; for instance, the past example of IBM that served as the major opening example of an organization that has gone from the top of the world to the brink of disintegration in the beginning of the 90's, is replaced in this 8th edition with Xerox. Daft continues and presents the most recent developments in organizations' design - structures and management methods that have only emerged lately in response to the turbulences in the environments and competition worldwide. By making the changes in every edition "Organization theory and design" wins the title of this review - "the learning book" - that mirror images the main theme of this work - "the learning organization". Almost no organization can stand still in today's reality - managers and workers have to constantly think of better ways of doing things and learn from every source that bears knowledge and can give the organization a better competitive advantage. Things have never moved so fast and threats and opportunities have never been so immense. Competitors have to be efficient and different to survive and stay on the top. The structure of the book is designed to convey its ideas in the best p...

Lean Thinking - Banish Waste and Create Wealth in Your Corporation- Revised and Updated

5 stars (Start eliminating waste!) - Buy this book, and pull up a stool! Thanks to Lean Thinking, I'm shedding waste right now. Wow! It's explosive! 4 stars (Impression of "Lean Thinking" as a Business Tool) - I found the book to be quite informative, applicable to any business, and a "must have" in our company library and in any company laying claim to being a "learning organization." 2 stars (Basic Basic Basic) - This book offered very little new information other than the basics that any of us who have ever done process improvement already know. Although the authors mention how Lean works in non-manufacturing environments, their examples are almost purely manufacturing. Not a bad read for a college student, but a waste of time for practitioners. Totally an introduction. ...

Managing Transitions- Making the Most of Change

4 stars (Start-ups and Managing Transitions) - The focus of the venture capital community is on the change a new disruptive company intends to bring to the world, and little, if any, attention is paid to the changes and transitions that the company, as it moves from concept development to full commercialization, will have to negotiate to achieve its vision. "Transition Management" provides an excellent `how to' book for young, fragile companies as they negotiate the never ending changes and transitions that they will be forced to make. As author William Bridges points out, change is situational and transition is psychological. "People are the ones who have to embrace new situations and carry out the corresponding changes. The psychological shifts that accompany the situational shifts can be difficult for people and must be managed to have everyone on board." Change and transition management is crucial to focus, execution, and organizational productivity. Those of us experienced in start-up management know first hand the changes that we will have to manage - some expected, some unexpected. But few of us have been schooled in the management of the transition that accompanies change. Generally, decisions to create change are made and implemented whether the people are on board or not. A spirit of "they will have to just accept them" is the operative mantra. But, as Bridges points out so well, we can do much to ease these transitions and keep our employees "on-board and involved." It is self-defeating to try to overcome people's resistance to change without addressing the threat that change poses to their world. For successful change to take place, people must have a purpose, a mental picture, a plan for, and a part to play in change. In short, successful change takes place only when everyone is actively involved. Key changes that create transitions that must be managed in a start-up include, but are not limited to: *The addition of new functions. *The addition/r...

Robert-s Rules of Order Newly Revised in Brief Roberts Rules of Order in Brief

5 stars (Buy this one first) - Even though I have both the "in Brief" and the unabridged editions, it is only the "in Brief" edition that I take with me to my meetings. I recommend that you buy and read the "in Brief" edition first. 5 stars (User-friendly meeting guide) - This has to be the most user-friendly book I've seen, starting with the inside of the front cover. It says, "If you only have 30 minutes" then read certain chapters. Somehow these experts figured out what the rest of us would need to know and how we would be looking for it. Maybe they had a panel of non-experts to critique. There are chapters detailing what the words are that you use to make something happen and how to use those words. Best of all, everywhere you look there are copious examples. In the back are succinct tables of those same words and there is also a chapter on how to find the completely complete information on the topic in the big "Robert's" book Most of the book is concerned with what you need to know as a member of the group. There are separate chapters for an officer of the group, which contain the things that most of us don't need to know. This is not a book you'd save for a winter evening curled up in front of the fireplace. It's to tell you all sorts of things you'd really rather not have to know, but that you really need to know. I've already decided that mine is mine alone. Nobody is going to borrow it because it would never come back to me. ...

Leadership and Self Deception- Getting Out of the Box

5 stars (Outstanding book for all tenured management/executives) - Incredible book!!! Forget the rest of the management books if you don't follow and apply the knowledge in this book first. This book identifies what goes wrong with the best managers and how to get back on track. I read a ton of books and am extremely critical, but this is an obvious 5 star. It's an easy read and is applicable to both personal and professional relationships. 5 stars (great) - i ordered five books at the same time from all different suppliers and this was the first to come great timing and just a great company! 4 stars (Eye Opening) - While the storyline is a bit cheesy, this book drives home an important point. Poor personal choices taint our ability to view others objectively and interact appropriately. ...

It-s All Politics - Winning in a World Where Hard Work and Talent Aren-t Enough

3 stars (C ycnical btu not to be missed) - Some realpolitik here. I can't say I enjoyed it thoroughly but I was curious and I lked learning abiout behaviors I could benefit from knowing. 4 stars (It's Not ALL Work, Can Be Fun!) - This valuable reference book explains the "in's and outs" of office politics, which are the most single factor in getting ahead in the career of your choice. This book is full of commonsense wisdom on how to get along with others and get ahead in life. Dr. Reardon is the author of THE SECRET HANDSHAKE about business psychology. She's great! Talent alone does not insure success; you must have those important relationships with the people who can best reward your creativity and intelligence. You are encouraged to 'pick your battles wisely' to deal with a difficult co-worker. When we think about politicians, automatically the words 'unethical' and 'devious' (sometimes flat-out 'lies') come to mind. In the workplace, "knowing what to say, to whom, and how and when to say it." Most of all, you will need to be able to convert enemies into your allies to win crucial support for your ideas. The only way to avoid politics at work is to avoid people. "For every locked entrance, there is a back door, window, even a chimney;" always be sure there is a way out before you crawl into a corner. It is important to remember that there is more than one way to handle any situation: good, bad or indifferent. Intuition is needed, but just as necessary is the power of persuasion.Power is a critical part of career politics. People remember those they perceive to be powerful. Power, like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder. A good read, wonderful instruction in the ways of life at work and at home, and packed full of good advice. It behooves us to try to follow her instructions as close to the letter as possible. She knows what she is talking about; you can, too. ...

Leading Change

5 stars (Great Business Manual!) - This book is a great business manual for executives at all levels. Another book I really enjoyed to read was "The Wal-Mart Way". It was very insightful and had many good ideas for bulding a strong company. 5 stars (Solid Principles for Growth) - I was a little concerned when I started reading this title, wondering if it would apply to churches as well as corporations. I was not disappointed. Kotter's ideas here are valid for any organization that is in the change process. The author's eight steps are nuggets of truth that will help pastors as well as CEOs. I recommend this book highly for pastors of growing, changing congregations. 5 stars (Packed with Knowledge!) - The picture on the cover of John P. Kotter's book tells it all: a group of penguins are shuffling their feet nervously on an icy precipice, while one brave bird leaps for the water below. The question is, which penguin are you? In too many organizations, executives shy away from the precipice, while someone lower down in the pecking order jumps in to test the landing conditions. Kotter says managers and leaders are quite different. A manager, he explains, is trained to think in a linear, one-two-three, risk-limiting way. Transformational change, however, can only be attained when true leaders push forward on several fronts at once - eight of them to be exact. Every successful change initiative begins with a coalition of leaders who create a sense of urgency. Kotter's book stems from a 1995 Harvard Business Review article titled, " Leading Change : Why Transformation Efforts Fail." It will probably sound hauntingly familiar to managers who have watched change initiatives begin in the front courtyard with a marching band and end a few months later, ushered out the back door like a diner who can't pay the tab. If you want to know why your last change initiative fizzled, we say read this book. Better yet, study it to ensure that your next leap of faith is a flying succe...

Leadership in Organizations 5th Edition

5 stars (Good Amazoner!) - Didn't respond to email but did send the book and I'm very happy with the book! I would definitely recommend! Thank you! 4 stars (weLEAD Book Review ...) - Yukl uses his expertise and credibility to write an outstanding book focusing on managerial leadership rather than social or parliamentary leadership. He attempts to include information on both the theory and practice of leadership in modern organizations. This valuable text also includes many recommendations and guidelines for improving the effectiveness of managers and leaders. The book includes a number of cases in an attempt to help the reader understand real world organizational problems and applications. This is a book that is primarily written and mostly reads like a college text book and is indeed used by a number of universities in their managerial or leadership programs. However, it is easy to read and does an excellent job of including the most informative and relative literature, studies and theories available today. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the study of organizational leadership, leading teams, leading change or studying follower-based approaches toward leadership. 5 stars (Marc! Au Contrare!) - Not worth curling up to a fire with? ... For me, after a year or more I still read some portion or another of this book nearly every week for the rich survey of ideas and theories it provides, often finding something that fits what I'm concerned about, and then springboarding into buying another book or digging out original research articles and papers to dig deeper. If you want to be widely informed about the full continuum of theory and research in leadership and organizations, this book will become a familiar resource, and a top choice for curling up to a fire one evening when alone and just paging through and finding something new or old you just have to read and think about some more. Successful Manager-s Handbook- Develop Yourself- Coach Others

5 stars (Great Management Resource) - This book is the most practical book on the topic of employment that I have seen. It is helpful for first level and intermediate level management because it is simply written and covers practical topics. It is also a great resource for new college graduates or anyone new to the workplace. Use it to learn what your manager might be expecting of you. Topics include strategic thinking, change management, technology, customer service, leadership, human resources and more. 5 stars (An in-depth, one-stop compendium ) - Now in an updated seventh edition, Successful Manager's Handbook is an in-depth, one-stop compendium packed with everything a manager absolutely must know. Written and compiled by Personnel Decisions International, a global human resources consulting firm specializing in building leadership talent, Successful Manager's Handbook is filled cover to cover with expert advice, from how to analyze issues and make sound, logical decisions to postively influencing others, fostering open communication, listen and write effectively, lead with courage, build trust, and much more. Peopleware - Productive Projects and Teams- 2nd Ed

5 stars (Extraordinary book) - Peopleware is a book that needs to be read by ALL people related to software development; not just managers and developers. It has created plenty of debate between people in my company because of the 'saving on space' issue; also, some people from my company doesn't yet understand why a developer cannot be treated like a soldier (strict regime); this book helps out to understand such issues (and much more!). Also it has been written in a pleasant and fast way to read. ??Excellent piece of work! The remaining only issue: It doesn't talk anything about the process of selling. Eventhough it's not a 'Sellingware' book, I think it deserves one chapter, just to create a link with the people that are in charge of generating money to support the 100 square feet that each programmer needs. 5 stars (A must read for any Manager.) - This a great book. You will learn without knowing you learned. Stop wasting time reading reviews. Buy the book and read it! 5 stars (Must have if you are a software pro) - Get this book, and read it MANY times, over and over again. If you are a developer, use it to put some ideas to your manager's brain. Try suggesting various ideas. Try lending it to him (I lost a copy of mine that way!) If you are a development manager, try to turn as much as possible from what it says from theory into practice. It will only make everybody's lives much much more productive and happier. ...

The Dance of Change- The Challenges to Sustaining Momentum in Learning Organizations

4 stars (Ponderous) - While I enjoyed this work and read it from cover to cover, it did begin to seem like too much of good thing. Some of the organization information seemed dated and some of the people who are offering advice are probably no longer held with such high regard in their former organizations. In any case, I would recommed it to anyone who is doing graduate or post-graduate work in organization and management or just wants some insight into how organizations really work. 5 stars (Great book to look at change from different lenses) - This book is touted as a "resource" to the Fifth Discipline, but my view is that it could itself stand on its own steam as a handbook for change management. With articles contributed by a variety of authors, the book looks at the challenges of triggering, initiating, aligning and sustaining change and the various diverse ways to confront and solve those challenges. The challenges that the book identifies are the challenges of: Orientation, Generating Profound Change, Not Enough Time, No Help, Not Relevant, Walking the Talk, Fear & Anxiety, Assessment & Measurement, True Believers and Non-believers, Governance, Diffusion, Strategy & Purpose. The book is choc-a-block with tools, explanation of jargon and references to other resources. An orientation to Systems Thinking and looking at organizations as complex systems would help in clarifying the book more. Hence it is desirable to read "the fifth discipline" before you read it. However, the delightful nature of this book ensures that you can flip open any page, read a little bit and keep it back, and feel refreshed and not thirst for more. For people who look at organizations as communities, as networks and as human systems in addition to just being an economic entity this book will delight and scare. For others, this book will act as a provoking way to look at change and organizations in search of equilibrium. 3 stars (Retread) - Senge et al have done some wonderful work...

Organizational Behavior- A Diagnostic Approach 7th Edition

1 stars (Excessive examples, choppy writing, poor proofreading) - The book provides useful diagnostic tools and challenging activities and case studies. However, the writing style of the author is poor and very choppy, making it difficult to follow the material. The author uses an excessive amount of real-world examples, but does little justice to covering and explaining the theory and concepts of the subject material. I purchased a used 7th edition of this text book through Amazon.com. The pervious owner of my book (a student, I assume) noted several errors in the book. For example, in Chapter 3, "The Diverse Workforce:...", page 81, heading "INDIVIDUAL VALUES AND ATTITUDES", subheading "Values", paragraph 2, sentence 1, the published text states: "Core values are more susceptible to change, and peripheral values are less susceptible (to change)." However, the sentence in my text book was manually corrected by the previous owner (at the direction of an instructor at another educational institution, I assume) to read: "Core values are less susceptible to change, and peripheral values are more susceptible (to change)." When I first read the sentence, I could not agree with what the author had stated. So I did a search on Google.com and verified from other sources that the author had incorrectly stated this premise. In Chapter 9, Activity 9-5 Behavior Description Questionnaire, page 319, the book provides a table for scoring a 30 statement behavior questionnaire. The activity requires one to select between an A or B statement which is characteristic of their own behavior. However, item number 6 in the scoring table shows two A answers, and item number 7 in the scoring table shows two B answers, making it impossible to obtain an accurate assessment of one's behavior pattern, unless one is able to clearly understand the subject material and correct the scoring table. These are just a few of the errors noted in the 7th edition of this publication. It appears the ...

Management of Organizational Behavior- Leading Human Resources 8th Edition

2 stars (Management of Organizational Behavior) - Not too bad as these books go but a tremendous amount of verbiage explaining the obvious. Excellent example of turning simple concepts in complex charts and definitions. I would imagine that people in the field love this hyperbole but it's BS to me and pretty much a waste of time to drudge though all of it. 5 stars (Management of Organizational Behavior: Leading Human Resourc) - Used by over 1 million students worldwide, this book provides a comprehensive examination of the applied behavioural sciences, and focuses on fundamental ideas which have stood the test of years of application in different environments. 5 stars (Goes where few texts dare to go: the real-world) - I recommend this to managers as much as students. Sure, the price seems like a lot of cash to shell out at first. But trust me, it is worth it. I had to read it for a Management class, and it started of like a typical OB text, illustrating the history of management studies (Taylor to Maslow to Mayo to Likert to ...). Good stuff, but pretty dull. Then, Hersey et al went where most scholars, even the supposedly worldly MBA types, fear to tread: real-world application! The text covers all of the material covered Blanchard's "One Minute Manager," "Putting the One Minute Manager to Work," and a shelf load of other books. It also does a great job introducing Blanchard and Hersey's Situational Leadership, where the manager matches leadership behavior to a report's ability level and motivation. This replaces "Leadership and the One Minute Manager," and delves much deeper into the topic. Hersey et al also cover: - Behavioral shaping, and positive and negative reinforcement quite nicely - Communications skills necessary to lead reports - Power building, and using effective power bases ... - The list literally goes on and on. I use the concepts I was first exposed to here day in and day out. They work. My OB professor told us that, if he would be limited to just...

The Present Future- Six Tough Questions for the Church

5 stars (Excellent resource) - McNeal continues the dialogue started by Leonard Sweet. McNeal however does it in a much more practical and accessible way. Recommend highly to anyone seeking to do church for the culture we are just now beginning to realize. 5 stars (Risky, but worth it) - Reggie McNeal offers a powerful alternative to the present-day church culture's Phariseeical worldview. Rather than trying to build the perfect church, as many churches do these days, McNeal advocates working to build the Kingdom of God by reaching people where they live/work/think. For people who are tied to the church culture as the way to reach God, this book will inspire resistance. But Jesus did not say, "The Church is the way, the truth, and the life", He said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life." Those who read this book are challenged to build God's kingdom by exiting the church box to reach those who would never set foot inside a church on their own. 5 stars (Frustratingly Enlightening - and Life Changing!) - Take a new look at all you do in at church, through the lens that Reggie McNeal provides. I've been trying to 'see' this way sincde reading The Present Future for the second time. It is frustrating to realize how church/club-oriented we are. Our structure and traditions are designed to meet the needs of the church (club) and not the needs of individuals. Now, we try to consider FIRST how we're impacting our community with the mission of Jesus, and how people's lives are being transformed; then consider how it affects the church. If we can make the transition, God will use us more effectively. ...

Organizational Behavior

2 stars (There are much better books out there) - ?·Very little focus on individual behavior in organizations - I know this is not a psychology text, but, Jex (2002), or one of the other psych authors (Osland, 2000) could have used for this course with much better coverage and not alter the course objectives to a great extent. ?·For a 2003 edition of text, the citations were very much out of date. The chapter on leadership for example (Chapter 14, which had a total of 53 citations) had only seven references within the last five years; 1998 or greater. ?·I am not of the opinion that this was a graduate text. The stories, pictures, essay and "effective manager" were not intellectual in their added information. In many cases the added material didn't correspond to the text (see chart on page 48 and subsequent text explanation). Another example would be on page 157 they ask the reader to refer to Figure 8.2 and then explain the chart with text that isn't even related to the major sections of this chart. oNot one of the Effective Manager boxes has references; where did all this good advice come from? ?·Typo's abounded in the text, they always do - but check out page 233 Chapter summary - it's not the right chapter; this appears agan with chapter 19. I really had the feeling that this was written by three people who did not do a line-by-line update of the 7th edition. ?·Of very serious concern would be the author's inclusion of sources in their writing. This infuriated me to no end. Page 63 under Gender "However, women are reported to be more conforming and to have lower expectations of success than men do." That is a very serious statement and it contains no citation - what reports, who, where, when? Another example is on page 85 when discussion perceptual differences in managers and employees - not citations given, even when stating that the differences are significant. oJust to show that I did not cull these examples only from the front of the book, Pg 274 "Recent wor...

Organizational Behavior with Student CD and PowerWeb

5 stars (Must read book) - For me this book had a great value. I used it on a college course after having faced the experience of being working on an IT company for 8 months. Actually I would say this book doesn't say anything anyone could not come up with; but I think that's as phylosofy is, common things we are used to, but that hardly we note to be able to do something about. I think this book is being very useful for me even after almost 3 years of be working, I think it helps you understand most of those frustrating situations we have to face daily on a company, allowing us to feel better on our work enviroment, be better partners on work, and make our work a little more productive. Definitly I recommend this book. 3 stars (Common sense in a bound volume) - This book discusses a topic that is a grab bag of different disciplines and has nice illustrations but i dont know if it is worth close to $100. Anyone who has significant work history intuitively knows a bulk of the material in this book. The book could be condensed to include the hard data and scientific findings and leave out much of the intuitively obvious commentary. This book is no worse than scores of similar textbooks on 'soft'topics but with the way prices are going many students are captive buyers, forced to buy textbooks at the teacher's request for perhaps questions used in the book for grading purposes while the general info can readily be found in college libraries. 3 stars (Scholar's choice) - The book may be a good choice for a scholar of OB. If you are a graduate student like I am, you may find it difficult to follow and overloaded with scientific terms. To my mind, the simpler the better, which this book is not. ...

The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book - Everything You Need to Know to Put Your EQ to Work

4 stars (Managers & above: please read!) - If you don't know the difference between your I.Q. and your E.Q. and how much it matters in the workplace, then read this book--especially if you're a supervisor, manager, director or CEO. There's even an on-line test to see how you rate. Run--don't walk--and get this book. Better yet: order it right now on Amazon :-) (Your employees will thank you!) 5 stars (Fabulous Read) - This is the most thought-provoking book I've read in a long time. Without being simplistic, it introduced me to so many interesting things I could use to my benefit. Being intellectually smart is surely a strong advantage in our society, but it doesn't say nearly as much as your control and awareness over your own emotions. Have you ever wondered why you have emotions, how your brain works to process them, and how you can use them to your own advantage? I've never read a book that so clearly explains how it all works and what to do with it. 5 stars (Tremendous) - I wasn't familiar with the authors, but bought the book after reading the description and the amazing endorsements from the Dalai Lama and Stephen Covey. I was not disappointed! The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book explains and explores via great stories and profound research. It's fun to read and has an enormous variety of invaluable, fact-based information which helped me with relationships and my career. ...

Mac OS X 10 4 Tiger DVD

5 stars (Sleek Tiger) - The finest OS to date. I was haapy with Paanthere, but Tiger is a steop above. 5 stars (From PC to Mac forever, this OS is amazing.) - I have used Windows for years and used a Mac at my work, I always liked the way the Mac handled graphics and also appreciated their ease of use. Mac OS X is so simple to use compared to Windows XP, it is by far the best OS I have ever used. I have not run into one single glitch, my powerbook has not crashed on me once. It had crashed on me a few times with OS 9, but this one seems to be a lot more stable. I like the dashboard also, you can quickly check the weather, stocks, dictionary or calendar all with a push of a button and built into the OS. You can also download many others for free from the Apple website. Itunes is a great application also and it is something I use all day long. Safari is far more superior in just about every-way compared to Microsoft Explorer, in fact it would take to long to list the benefits. I also liked the ability to run OS 9 in classic mode, so you can keep all your older software and still use them within OS X. If you are sick and tired of the Windows fatal exception errors or sending Windows error reports, then buy yourself an Apple and enjoy stress free living with OS X. 1 stars (Stick with Panther) - I get the spinning beachball and Microsoft Office application crashes about as often as I did in 10.1! I reformatted my hard disk and reinstalled Panther after trying the 10.4.1 and 10.4.2 updates. For my needs Panther (10.3.8+) is a much more robust and stable operating system. ...
