Classical Dynamics of Particles and Systems

1 stars (Classical Mechanics is a Foundation) - After using this book(or better trying to use this book) I've observed, after complementing the theory that is just trying to resemble Goldstein obviusly omiting most of the theory and proposing to fill those gaps with little examples. Exercises are poorly described maybe asuming you memorize examples, very few derivations are included most is tenth grade algebra. If you are trying to learn classical mechanics try Goldstein or Landau 5 stars (A Road to Higher Realms) - Whether knowingly or unknowingly, most of the physics text reviews that I have read may be divided into two categories: - those who loved or hated the book because it was not written to teach physics through a conceptual framework. - those who loved or hated the book because it was not written to teach physics through the development of skills. Then the reviews may be divided again into two categories: - those who loved or hated the book because it conveyed an exclusively classic and/or historical treatment of physics. - those who loved or hated the book because it conveyed a modern treatments of physics. Therefore, I will write my review within the same framework that everyone else seems to... I loved this book because it was written to teach physics through the development of SKILLS; I loved this book because it did so through a CLASSIC TREATMENT of physics. Now I will explain why... The study of physics is FAR MORE than an extraction of information from a book, the way that, say, reading an encyclopedia entry is. The study of physics, rather, is a MENTAL DISCIPLINE, that takes 10,000 hours of intensive mental effort just to become a 'fairly skilled beginner', and at least half a lifetime of intensive mental effort to become an expert in just one, very small, sub-sub-field. It is a journey in which one must tavel the same mental footsteps that the great physicists of the past did before one is ready to travel the new and original mental footsteps of...

Introduction to Quantum Mechanics 2nd Edition

1 stars (Typical Griffiths Drivel) - As usual, Griffiths replaces formalism and math with hand waving nonsense. While that may work to some extent in E&M, it fails miserably with a topic such as quantum mechanics. Also, as others have mentioned, Griffiths leaves a good chunk of the actual learning to exercises, which would be fine if there were answers in the back to select important problems or *gasp* a solutions manual, but Griffiths lacks both. Save yourself the grief and buy someone else's book. Griffiths, as usual, just doesn't cut it. 5 stars (Book Review) - excellent book for studying QM with a very comprehensive set of highly instructive problems. 1 stars (Terrible book to learn from QM) - I decided to refresh my QM skills and decided to buy Griffith....bad idea. At the university I used Messiah, B.H. Bransden - C.J. Joachain and Cohen - Tannoudj. All these manuals are much more better than Griffith. If you are not following a course don't buy this book, everything is an exercise, it is interesting to prove your skills and awarness on the matter, but every real stuff is left as an exercise then no explanation at all: for example Ehrenfest theorem and all the mathematics used in Schrodinger equation...these as a starter.... I really don't understand the love for this book, probably as the author tells you QM with an hippy style...if you don't believe me go to the author site.... If you want to learn QM start with Feynman and Greeinstein then read Bransden or Liboff if you are at an undergraduated level otherwise go to Cohen or Sakurai. ...

Vector Mechanics for Engineers- Statics and Dynamics

2 stars (A poor example of engineering mechanics textbook) - I was forced into purchasing this group of books for my university engineering program as all of the homework problems required were straight from this book. Additionally, the books were packaged with schaums problem sets that were particularly useless (schaums outlines are usually excellent, but their problem sets did not contain all of the detail and had nothing extra to offer over Beer and Johnston's textbook) and therefore a waste of my money. With that said, the only redeeming value of this book is the sheer number of exercises and answers (numerical answers with no explanation, however). The writing quality suffers what english majors call overuse of passive voice. Overuse of the words "is," "will," "are," etc. characterize this style. With the lack of acting verbs in sentences, the book effectively numbs the mind and puts the reader to sleep. This passive use of verbage also serves to take the emphasis off of the important parts of sentences. Aside from stylistic issues with the english language, the book also suffers from a lack of vision. The authors did not provide a good methodology to approaching problems at all. They hint at it, by telling the student to draw pictures. However, in examples, the authors jump from one step to the next without much explanation of how a person would discover the techniques themselves. This makes the homework problems particularly difficult when a completely different approach than the one in the examples is required. There are also derivation and explanation issues. For instance, in the handling of the precession of free bodies (this example sticks out in particular), the author provides a diagram and some equations. However, students cannot precede merely from what the author explained. The student, in order to approach the problems, must assume the validity of the vector diagrams and their relationships, along with equations, seperately. The diagrams ...

Anatomy of Hatha Yoga- A Manual for Students- Teachers- and Practitioners

5 stars (Great reference book) - I am a yoga and Pilates instructor, and have always wanted a guide to understand the anatomy of all the poses, especially those concerning lower back issues. Now I have a great guide that helps me aproach these poses in a much safer way. 5 stars (Should be Required for Yoga Teachers!) - I'm currently in training to be a yoga teacher, and this book is required reading for my courses. It really goes into detail, as it applies to yoga postures and breathing. It's a must-have for the serious yoga student or teacher. It will help you make the most of your postures, and understand the mechanics involved. It will also help you explain and cue poses if you are a yoga instructor. 5 stars (Amazing) - This book is simply a treasure. Full of hard to find information you probably wont find anywhere else. Just buy it. ...

Fluid Mechanics with Student Resources CD-ROM

1 stars (Cumbersome to Use) - I used this book for my second course in fluid mechanics, and I thought it was terrible. THe chapters are not organized very well, the example problems aren't presented effectively, and this problems at the ned of the chapter are not well written, as well as this book contains many errors. I don't reccommend this text to other students; I would use Munson&Okishi 's text for undergrads. 1 stars (Worst display of quality control I've ever seen) - I have never purchased a product of any kind in my life with a quality control as low as this textbook demonstrated. I believe the publishers owe ever student who has ever purchased this book a full return. Unfortunately there is a limited way for students to avoid purchasing this text if your proffesor intends to use it. I strongly recommend lecturers do not choose this text as it will force your students to throw more than a hundred dollars down the drain, and to add further insult to injury, your students performance will decrease. I know persons who are now less conversent in the subject of fluids for having read and used this text. If the publishers had even had their children check the text for mistakes they would have ended up with a better product. If publishers are smart enought to read these reviews I suggest to you that you get a real editor to go through the entire text and solutions manual with a fine tooth comb and release a sixth edition afterwards. I feel extremely sorry for any student who has to learn fluids for the first time from this text. 2 stars (AVOID THIS BOOK IF AT ALL POSSIBLE!!!!) - Please do yourself a favor and avoid this book. This is the fourth edition and perhaps the worst introduction to fluid mechanics book ever printed. I am a PhD student and have had many courses in fluids. This book is riddled with errors and mistakes. The theory is correct but the derivations of certain equations and the solutions to many, many, many problems are wrong! I cannot believ...

Anatomy of Movement

5 stars (Detailed and well illustrated resource) - Very detailed resource and well illustrated, the book has answered a multitude of questions I had about coordination, muscle conditioning and anatomy. It is a must for dance instructors. The book is very well organized and researched. Excellent! 5 stars (Excellent review of ... ligaments!) - In all of my materials as a massage therapist, none of them covered ligaments functions, names and locations as well as this one! Beautiful illustrations and it's a book that makes you get up and move every few minutes as you're reading! 5 stars (Excellent introduction to anatomy and kinesiology) - As other reviewers have said, this is an excellent introduction to anatomy and kinesiology. The book strikes the perfect balance between clinical detail and practical knowledge for body-workers, athletes and dancers. We have copies of several pages up on the wall at my Pilates studio which get referred to often. All the major skeletal muscle groups of the limbs and torso are covered. It is not a disection manual. It is organized for students of movement. Of particular value is the section on the work of the psoas and the "psoas paradox" that is somewhat controversial. To get more in depth, one text I can recommend for the dancer/Pilates instructor is "Dance Kinesiology" by Sally Sevey Fitt. ...

Fluid Power with Applications

2 stars (Not enough examples) - I am a an engineering student with a gpa of 3.93 (73 hours). I have found this to be one of the least helpfull books I have ever used. The examples worked are at such a low complexity level, that they do almost no good for solving the problems at the end of the chapters. There are entire concepts that are missing explanation and you can only hope that you will have a good enough proffesor to explain during lecture. I do not have that luxury, mine will only go over the illustrated examples in the book. 5 stars (good FPC book) - Good book to start leaning abt fliud powe 5 stars (New Edition) - Where is the new edition? It is already out but you don`t have it ...

Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics

5 stars (A very good book for students) - This book is very good for undergraduate students. It introduces a lot of about basic fluid mechanics knowledge. I once bought this book by using a coupon from couponsky.com and saved some money. The book tell you every basic aspect in fluid mechanics. For a beginner, it is one book worthy to buy. 2 stars (Dont rely only on this book) - If you are cursed with a poor professor and are forced to use the book to teach yourself the material, you will be sorely dissapointed. First of all, the book is extremely wordy and very complicated to understand. You are given a ton of equations when they talk about a topic but you almost always find no use for the majority of them. I find the later chaptersespecially to be all math oriented and I found fewer and fewer real world problems to help study for the exams which had real world questions. In general, I was very dissapointed with the book. The study guide that accompanes the book is actually fairly decent and succint if not too short and they sometimes dont show important equations 5 stars (Excellent for the student of Mechanical Engineering) - This book is excellent for the engineering student. I recommend it for the beginning student of fluid mechanics or for the advanced student wishing to refresh his/her knowledge of fluid mechanics. The collaborative effort by the authors produce a beautifully explained text. The material is clear and concise and the additional software included with the book is of great use for illustrating important concepts. ...

Barnett-s Manual- Analysis and Procedures for Bicycle Mechanics 4 Vol Set

5 stars (Best bicycle repair manuals out there !!) - At over 1000 pages (grease-resistant), a binding format that separates this massive book into four easy-to-handle volumes (and allows you to transfer the pages to a ring-binder, if preferred), every little detail the novice needs, all the advanced information the experienced mechanic wants, quick-find chapter dividers, and comprehensive coverage of all parts of the bike and all technologies are just some of the features that make this manual the bicycle tool you can't do without. More than a thousand computer-generated illustrations with phenomenal detail and clarity are used. More than ever, words and pictures are used together to optimize and simplify understanding. There are recommendations and procedures for numerous new tools introduced since 2000. Almost 200 additional forks and shocks covered in their new release fifth edition (available on their website. Look for BBinstitute or Barnett Bicycle Institute using Google). Dozens of new disc brakes covered. Integrated headsets now covered. Expanded coverage of Campagnolo products. Procedures for servicing newer models of pedals and cartridge-bearing hubs added. Wheel-building procedures for low-spoke-count and paired-spoke wheels. Procedures in every chapter have been refined and expanded. Best there is out there for sure. Great investment. Not a waiste of money ! 5 stars (This is what you're searching for.) - Don't waste your money on those paperbacks that clutter the sports sections of Barnes & Noble and Borders. The Nashbar & Performance Bike offerings are just as inadequate. By the time you've spent $10-$20 each on 2 or 3 of those anecdotal "manuals" with their "fits all" diagrams, you can almost pay the Amazon discounted price for this........... .........THE REAL THING. 5 stars (Comprehensive with many details, yet perhaps a little dated) - I haven't seen any bicycle maintenance books that come close to providing the kind of detail that Barnett'...

H 264 and MPEG-4 Video Compression- Video Coding for Next-generation Multimedia

2 stars (One Chapter on H.264 Only - Don't Bother) - I got this book since it is the only book on H.264 I know of. There is a single chapter on H.264, chapter 6. The free on-line papers from Richardson are mostly what is in that chapter. There are plenty of H.264 overviews on the net for free which cover the subject in greater depth which are more current. 3 stars (First on the subject, rough around the edges) - This is the first text book published on H.264. It has a nice overview of digital video compression techniques followed by chapters focusing on the specifics of each of the MPEG-4 and H.264 standards. Buying this book relays much of the same information but is more cost effective than buying each of the papers and articles on the subject from IEEE and others. It appears that this book was rushed to publication in order to be first. Particularly in the chapter on H.264, there are many typos and incomplete figures. In some places, a new technical term is used without proper introduction. I look forward to a cleaner second edition in the future. ...
