The Game- Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists

5 stars (An interesting, and mechanical way to approach meeting with the opposite sex) - This book is absolutely filled with interesting theories on the art of social interaction and meeting women for dating and sex. 1/2 autobiography of the author Neil Strauss's social life for the last two years, and 1/2 story of the dark side of "The Game" in which a group of "Pick Up Artists" move in a house together, and it eventually collapses on itself. Looking at the book, you wonder just what exactly is "The Game" and when does one stop looking at life and meeting people not as a "set" or group, drop the "routines" and play in the real world instead. 5 stars (Trust REAL reviews.) - Please note that the review below, and most if not all reviews with 1-2 star reviews, especially those calling members of the community described in this book are all by one man who i shall not name, as he is merely a disgruntled man with a vendetta against this community of individuals who's goals is self-improvement, please take a look at reviews done by the top 50 and real name reviewers. 1 stars (Wait for the Movie) - If you like to watch the TV shows "Friends", "Coupling", "How I met your mother", "Sex in the City", "The Single Guy" or "Nova" and you're looking for a story to read, than this book is for you. If you haven't read a book for pleasure for a long time but your looking for a "How To" book, then this book isn't for you. Read the book "The Sensuous Man" instead. I listened to Neil Strauss at a book signing. He "tours" with self proclaimed losers who call them themselves former losers who sell "How To Pickup Women" services. They sell nothing but air --- and that's free. If you're looking for a story but not a book reader, wait for the movie coming to theaters in 2008. ...

Your Pregnancy Week by Week- Fifth Edition

3 stars (One of the best pregnancy books out there) - I am having my second child, so I purchased the 5th edition book. I loved the 4th as it was very informative and had a detailed drawing of what the baby looked like each week. The 5th edition is a bit different. I still think it's very informative and the best book to have to guide you through these 9 months, but I wish the doctor would have put all the "scary" medical information in a "special considerations" chapter at the end of the book. It's a bit frustrating to have to read something negative every week. I also wish the doctor could explain a bit more about the development of the baby instead of just a few generalized sentences. Overall, it's alot more detailed than others out there. 4 stars (Good for first-time pregnancies) - I bought this book, along with "What to Expect when you're Expecting". I liked this book BETTER because of the week-by-week changes in baby/me vs. the monthly chapters in WTEWYE. As far as some folks saying it's negative, all baby books I've looked at will tell you what can go wrong. I would rather know what CAN possibly go wrong and the symptons so I can know if it's an issue I should be contacting my doctor. 1 stars (Your Money: Down the Drain) - Over the past 22 weeks I've been reading a number of books, this being one of them. Your Pregnancy Week by Week is organized in 6-7 page chapters, one for each week of the pregnancy. Each week gives a couple paragraphs on changes going on with the baby, changes going on with the pregnant mom-to-be, and then spends 2-3 pages covering other topics of potential interest to the pregnant woman. Therein lies the problem. Potential interest does not mean necessary relevance, and the fact that each week you get a taste of potentially interesting information means that if in week 11 you have a question about the difference between doulas and midwives, you have to wait until week 19 to read about it. One chapter spends it's entire 'Things You...

The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands

4 stars (Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands CD) - Very good book. It gives you a dose of reality and makes you take a look at your relationships. It helps to see the things that are taken for granted and to appreciate and understand your spouse. 5 stars (Wonderful!) - I love that Dr. Laura tell's it like it is. Every bit of her advice caused me to step back and take a look at myself and how I can better support and love my husband. 5 stars (to close to home) - Sometimes the truth hurts. Dr. Laura always tells it like it is, even when we don't realize it. My husband actually bought me this book for his birthday. After I loaned it to someone and never got it back, I decided to buy the cd. ...

The Practice of Social Research with CD-ROM and InfoTrac Practice of Social Research

4 stars (Textbook) - I use this for my text for an upper division Soc class - is a good book - easy to read - wish I had the CD! 5 stars (Fast, Accurate and Great Condition) - I was skeptical when the description said they ship same day but took the chance because I had waited till the last minute to order my books. I placed the order Monday morning and received the book Wednesday just in time for class!!! Thank you for the fast delivery with no extra charge to me!!! And of course as promised the book was in excellent condition and everyone in class was jealous because I paid less and got better service then most of them!!!! 2 stars (Babbie is a textbook machine, not a researcher) - I have taught a survey research course for 3 semesters and used this book because it was recommended. If you want to teach a course in overall research methods, this may be your book. If you want to teach survey research, use something else. Too much of the book focuses on qualitative methods. In addition, some of his information is simply off-base. His discussion of the reasons for using stratified sampling is particularly erroneous. In addition, the research he uses as examples (research he has conducted) was done 20 years ago and is neither interesting nor enlightening. In addition to the problems with the text book, the publishing company is not terribly helpful. I had to hound them to get desk copies and a test bank. They never did send me a copy of the study guide. It seems as though Earl Babbie writes text books to make money, not because he is a researcher with an abundance of information to share with the world. If you want an introductory level book on survey research, use Czaja and Blair (Pine Forge Press), Fowler (Sage) or another book written by people who actually do survey research. The one positive thing I can say is that his workbooks on how to use SPSS are pretty good. ...

Tender Warrior - God-s Intention For A Man

5 stars (Oustanding! ) - This book should be mandatory reading to every Christian male. It should be given to every young man so that he starts off his walk right. One of the best books I've ever read. Ever since I first read this book, I've given and continue to give copies to every one who I think might read it. If you can, also try to order his other books. I especially like Spirit Warriors. Do yourself, your family, and your community a favor and order Stu Weber's books. 5 stars (Excellent book on being a Christian father and husband) - This is an excellent and inspiring book for all men who want to be what God has called them to be. I think most men know that we're not living up to all that we could or should be, but so many of us don't know what to do about it. We're not being "real men." Now, for those of you who may be thinking "Oh no, not another 'get naked and beat tribal drums' book," Weber discusses several of the "drum beating" types of books, fairly discussing their positive points but concluding that they fall way short of where they need to in their search for authentic manhood. To find what men are made to be, you have to go back to the Author himself: past one man's personal insights into himself, past ancient tribal customs, past the "old stories": to the original Author Himself. This is a very Biblically-based book, and Weber makes no apologies for that. Weber divides manhood into four divisions, which he calls King, Warrior, Mentor, and Friend. This general theme is discussed in some other books on manhood (as Weber admits) but not as Biblically as Weber does it. For example, another book calls them "blueprints" of a man: Weber says he prefers to think of them as "fingerprints" of the man's Creator. But Weber doesn't hang his entire book on these four (rather arbitrary) divisions. Weber then finds a common thread throughout all of them: Initiative. I think this idea of Initiative being the core of manhood was one of the most insightf...

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families

5 stars (Family Lessons From "The Inside Out " ) - Covey encourages every parent to do some soul searching to become aware as to what really is priority in life. Then, he suggests we put "first things first." I believe that most parents would admit that they do wish to have "FAMILY" comes first--above all else. But, in today's busy, often stressful daily routine of life, accomplishing that goal is often "easier said than done". Covey clearly points out the essentials...such as establishing effective communication lines through family meetings and one-on-one talks with the kids. He makes so much sense as he describes with personal anecdotes how love, values, morality, and empathy for others is a process of teaching and learning from "the inside out"...in other words from within the family rippling out to society at large. He talks about establishing a family mission statement and helps to direct moms and dads to find the courage and the skills to make changes for the better. Covey's book creates the mindset and the outline. If you have young kids like me, I recommend a perfect compliment 'how-to book' with Covey's ... called "THE POCKET PARENT." This handy book, written for parents of 2-6 year olds, is loaded with compassion and humor along with over one thousand tips and skills to try. It literally trouble-shoots many of the problem behaviors we all deal with daily-such as Angry outbursts, Bedtime, Mealtime and Clean-up refusals, Tantrums, Disrespectful attitude, the "Gimmes", Morning "Crazies", Sibling fights, Whining and many more. These 2 books (one more theoretical, the other more "hands on" practical) have changed our lives. We now have more peace and cooperation in our family---and that gives us more time to enjoy each other. Consider both books for your home reference library. 3 stars (A Bit Too Sappy For Me) - While this book had some good insights and "a-ha" moments, it was too sappy for me to get past the third chapter. I enjoy a good metaph...

Setting Limits with Your Strong-Willed Child - Eliminating Conflict by Establishing Clear- Firm- and

4 stars (Very good info/advice; I need 1 step more.) - The authors have solid, reasonable advice for parents; tools which work with children of strong-willed OR compliant temperaments. That has got to be invaluable for parents trying to raise both in the same home. All of the insights seemed valid and I saw nothing to contradict what I know of early childhood development and age-appropriate expectations. If you are needing help within your family, this book is excellent. My only disappointment is that it does NOT give any advice for me as a parent on how to help my child function in environments where the adults in authority do not have these skills. (Relatives often say, "He doesn't listen to anyone but you." I can tell them they need to give CLEAR, FIRM limits and FOLLOW THROUGH, but it doesn't do much good.) The book does suggest sharing the info in the book with teachers, relatives, etc. But parents can never ensure that teachers, relatives, coaches, and other adult leaders will have or use these skills. I'd like to help my child learn to cooperate anyway UNLESS there is a moral reason not to. (I am a big advocate of questioning or even defying authority when compliance violates your moral principles. But to constantly question or defy simply because you can is innappropriate and often dangerous.) There are times when it would be in my child's best interests to cooperate with an authority even though he/she does not set clear, firm, respectful boundaries. I hope the authors will go one more step and write something to help my strong-willed child (and I) deal with the rest of the world. 5 stars (A fabulous, practical guide!) - My husband and I both read this book for help with understanding our "strong willed" 5 year old, and the techniques work so well that it has amazed us. I would recommend this book to anyone with children because it provides great, easy tips for understanding and communicating with your children. 5 stars (Wonderfully educatio...

Clinical Guidelines in Family Practice

5 stars (Essential clinical reference) - This book is an essential clinical reference for both NP students and practicing NPs. It is organized in an easy to use format. It contains up-to-date information on diagnosing and managing common illnesses seen in both children and adults. It also contains thorough information on health promotion. I would recommend this book to all students and new clinicians. 5 stars (Best Book For Practice) - we use this book in our practice as a policy book for mid-level providers. 5 stars (Invaluable Reference Tool) - As a nurse practitioner student, things were much easier once I discovered this reference. As a new graduate nurse practitioner, I KNOW I couldn't survive without this reference. After the Affair- Healing the Pain and Rebuilding Trust When a Partner Has Been Unfaithful

4 stars (Rebuilding) - The one good thing I found in this book is the expression of real rage and the range of emotions that are most often felt when the "faithful" one has been betrayed by the "unfaithful" one. I found the book does bring some vlauable insight for the 'unfaithful' to understand the emotions that the 'faithful' does go through. If you are looking to rebuild and restore your life, I recommend the insight this book gives, along with another one called 'Stop Being the String Along' by Barbara Rose which has provided me with life changing answers. Give both books a look, as you will find enlightening answers. 5 stars (After the Affair) - This was a very well written book and very helpful for all kinds of marital problems. 4 stars (My review of After . . .) - AFTER THE AFFAIR is a must read if you are struggling in the aftermath of an affair. It provides such a great insight on why things happen and really challenges to explore your heart and feelings. Another great thing about it is that it does not place outright blame on one party or another, looks at both spouses perspectives of the situation and gives the necessary tools to start rebuilding. Things that other people, family, therapists, etc. may have told you a hundred times but never really made sense become clear with reading this book. It has helped me very much so far and my friends are now reading it as well. Other books I recently read and enjoyed were: THE LOVELY BONES, LUCKY, and THE CHILDREN'S CORNER by Jackson McCrae. ...

Men Are from Mars- Women Are from Venus- A Practical Guide for Improving Communication and Getting W

5 stars (Classic Genius) - This is one of the books that every adult should read. I found several stories in the book which seemed like they were right out of my own life situations -- and you probably will too. It is very universal and will help you. 1 stars (Attention Sister Venuvians: We Must Punish This John Gray By Forever Denying Him Sex!!!) - The most sexist, biased, silly, unfounded, unhelpful waste of time to come from a publishing house in many a moon. This supposed relationship enhancer is the biggest example of playing with a loaded gun since the serpent in the Garden of Eden offered marriage advice to Eve. I know this is now a cult hit but I wonder how many relationships this exercise in stereotyping has busted up? Gray would have us accept that humans are without variation walking examples of either Martians or Venuvians. JMJ, but who on earth falls for this hogswallow? Apparently a lot of people by the sales numbers. Gray would like to make us think all men are confrontation-seeking warriors who reason at waist level. (Actually only half of that statement is true.) He makes a case that men dwell on this plane to spread their DNA, make quick, simple decisions and scratch themselves in public. Women, the less than sage Gray wants it know, are emotion-driven machines turned on and off by nesting instincts, the desire for endless communication and a snuggly need for flattery and security. We are supreme manipulators employing sex as the coin of the realm in the marketplace of romance. This book has all the depth of a three-panel Sunday comic strip. Unfortunately rather than going through the talk show circuit and dying a natural death in the 1990's, I saw a new edition of this was out since the one I read for a class. "Updated!" it proclaimed. What, Gray's going to admit we've evolved a little and are now in the stone age instead of the protoplasmic mating pool he seemed to think we all lived in when he first tossed this inflammatory little cartoon ...

The Five Love Languages- How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate

5 stars (General evaluation) - 1.Is this an in depth presentation? This book discusses the five love languages and the variants of each. The book serves primarily to introduce the reader to these languages and their "dialects". There are also many examples in the book of how the different love languages operate in the lives of married couples. I would say that the book is a very good and workable introduction to the topic, but not an in depth presentation. 2.To what extent does the author address current situations? The five love languages are applicable to all people in all situations. These love languages are as old as the human race itself and that makes the book very topical. This book develops the theme of the five love languages around the covenant of marriage. Couples where spouses are not fulfilling each other's emotional needs will find a new approach to their marriages in this book. This book can also be applied to other relationships and the reader will learn to express his love to other people in a constructive manner. The book will also sensitise the reader to his own love language making it easier to communicate his need for love to other people. 3.Was there any new information? The five love languages discussed were new information to me. The love languages are: *Words of affirmation - the love that is communicated by speaking words of edification to a person. *Quality time - the love that is communicated by setting aside specific time to spend with a person. *Receiving gifts - the love that is communicated by giving gifts to a person. The gift can also be the gift of self. *Acts of service - the love that is communicated by being a servant to someone. *Physical touch - the love that is communicated by physically touching someone. 4.What impact did the book have on me? I did a bit of soul searching while reading this book. My inability to receive love from my father suddenly became clear: He did not love me in my primary love lang...

Letters From Dad

4 stars (An essential guide to leaving a legacy of love, blessing, and affirmation to your children) - Greg Vaughn had never been close with his dad. So after his dad died and Vaughn was cleaning out the garage, he was surprised at the depth of his grief. "The only thing I had left from my dad was an old tackle box and silence." He continues, "I remember crying out to God, 'This is it? This is all I get? I don't even have my father's signature!' " That garage moment set in motion Vaughn's growing nationwide movement to encourage men to write periodic letters to their children --- and wives and parents --- leaving a legacy of blessing, affirmation, and love. The book essentially explains how to set about writing letters, complete with sample letters, a table of contents listing topics that letters might address over time, and writing tips from a college professor. Vaughn suggests that letters include three elements: praise, hope and vision for the future, and assurance of loving commitment. But it also has an unfolding plot with multiple characters, explaining how Vaughn gathered a dozen men to join him in his initial, tentative venture. They met monthly for four months, agreeing to write and then read to the group letters they'd written --- first to wives, then to children, then to parents, living or dead, and finally a letter on the order of a final testament: "If our friends who've passed away had been able to speak at their own funerals, I wonder what they would've said. Have you ever thought about that? What would you say if you could speak at your own funeral?" You see the men interested in the letter-writing concept but clueless as to what to say or how to start. You see the reactions of wives and children when they receive their first letters, presented, according to Vaughn's schema, in wooden boxes with engraved nameplates. You see glimpses into Vaughn's own blended family. You see the birth of a church-based course called "Letters from Dad." On one le...

The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work - A Practical Guide from the Country-s Foremost Relati

5 stars (Action oriented advice for today's couples) - I found this book to be very helpful and therapeutic. The first chapter is a little challenging to get through but after that I found practical insight into common challenges faced by today's couples as well as excercises and action items to overcome these challenges. There is a lot to read but I found it well worth the time. I would definitely recommend this book for any committed couple regardless of whether or not you have major problems in your relationship. The book sheds light on how to discuss problems in a reasonable fashion and does not put any unreasonable expectations on you to always agree with your spouse. It even acknowledges that individual relationships are likely to have their own set of perpetual problems that will never be solvable but teaches you have to cope with these issues as a couple. 5 stars (The 7 Principles for Making Marriage Work) - An excellent, research based text that offers practical information. It's about real life rather than Hallmark movie portrayals of relationships and offers many ways to work on repairing, rekindling, and maintaining loving feelings in a marriage. It's well presented, clear, easy to read and suited all readers. It ought to be required reading in high school and college so people have more realistic expectations of themselves and their partners. 5 stars (Solid Review on SEC OND Marriage book - Elizabeth and Jameson Thottam) - We bought this as our sec ond book on marriage (since we're still young at heart), and found a nice primer on does and don'ts. It covers a lot good tips on how to relate with eachother and drivers most of its analysis from insider trading tips on successful relationships. Love Must Be Tough - New Hope for Families in Crisis

5 stars (Excellent book, but you must have the fortitude to follow!) - Dr. Dobson is 100% correct in his methods. It IS guidance by the Lord. Showing TOUGH LOVE is the only way to help someone you love. Be it your spouse, a child or a relative. The methods in this book are not tricks. They delve into the psychology of what happens when someone feels "caged" in a relationship. It's based on the well known fact "the harder you try and hold on to someone, the harder they fight to get away." And this book is not just for Marriage issues. Dr. Dobson lists 16 things you need to know when you enter into a relationship that can keep you from blowing it. Had I known then what I know now, I would be upset at myself. I blew 14 of the 16 things and it's no wonder she ran away calling me "clingy" and "soft." I was and Dr. Dobson showed me exactly why. This book is NO GUARANTEE that you will win your spouse or significant other back. But, like anything else, if you don't do something you will more assuredly lose them anyway. Pray hard and read this book if you want to keep them. Learn to give them space. While I may have blown my chances with my ex (and I think I have) at least I am sure I will never repeat the same mistakes again. Single or Married, you need this book! 1 stars (Awful, Awful, Awful) - If your husband or wife just left and you are in the middle of the confusion and despair of that situation DO NOT follow the suggestions in this book! Trust me, go to the Lord in prayer, seeking only Him for your answers, He is absolutely faithful. Don't talk to your neighbors, friends, relatives, counselors or anyone until you talk to Jesus. He is your only hope and this book's advise is definitely not recommended if you want your spouse back!! I would never even sell this book for fear of the distruction it can cause. It belongs in the dumpster, after being shreaded. Also, I gave it 1 star because 0 was not given as an option! 5 stars (Not just for the desp...
