Blink - The Power of Thinking Without Thinking

3 stars (Blinking) - Ok but not great...seem to wonder off in too many different directions at times. 5 stars (Really Interesting and an Easy Read) - Blink is a look at all the various things scientists have discovered about how we think without knowing we're thinking. It particularly takes a long, hard look at why it is that people's first impressions so often conflict with either what careful analysis says or what people think they believe. Gladwell looks at a broad range of applications of these ideas. He looks at why, even though Pepsi wins the blind "Pepsi Challenge," Coke continues to be the market leader. He investigates the psychology and split-second thinking that caused the death of an unarmed, fleeing immigrant from over 40 gunshots fired by NYPD officers. He looks at various factors that affect everything from standardized test scores to electing a President. Some have suggested that all Gladwell really tells us is that our first impressions are sometimes right and sometimes wrong. If after reading this book that's all you come away with, you have completely missed the point. The point is that whether those impressions are right or wrong is governed by a complex set of physiologic and experiential rules, and that we can do something about them. Cops can do things to make sure those first impressions don't result in an innocent death. And yes, you can learn to tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi when you drink a whole can, not just a sip. Gladwell is a writer for the New Yorker, and his writing style is very much like a bunch of magazine articles. But they are very GOOD magazine articles, and you want to read them all. 4 stars (Informative) - This book was very interesting to me, though I will admit it got boring at parts. Some sections were just very repetitive and seemed to be overkill, but the overall message the book sent was intriguing. It helped me understand the way the mind works and how people use this knowledge of their mind...

4 stars (Start-ups and Managing Transitions) - The focus of the venture capital community is on the change a new disruptive company intends to bring to the world, and little, if any, attention is paid to the changes and transitions that the company, as it moves from concept development to full commercialization, will have to negotiate to achieve its vision. "Transition Management" provides an excellent `how to' book for young, fragile companies as they negotiate the never ending changes and transitions that they will be forced to make. As author William Bridges points out, change is situational and transition is psychological. "People are the ones who have to embrace new situations and carry out the corresponding changes. The psychological shifts that accompany the situational shifts can be difficult for people and must be managed to have everyone on board." Change and transition management is crucial to focus, execution, and organizational productivity. Those of us experienced in start-up management know first hand the changes that we will have to manage - some expected, some unexpected. But few of us have been schooled in the management of the transition that accompanies change. Generally, decisions to create change are made and implemented whether the people are on board or not. Thank you! 4 stars (weLEAD Book Review ...) - Yukl uses his expertise and credibility to write an outstanding book focusing on managerial leadership rather than social or parliamentary leadership. He attempts to include information on both the theory and practice of leadership in modern organizations. This valuable text also includes many recommendations and guidelines for improving the effectiveness of managers and leaders. The book includes a number of cases in an attempt to help the reader understand real world organizational problems and applications. This is a book that is primarily written and mostly reads like a college text book and is indeed used by a number of universities in their managerial or leadership programs. However, it is easy to read and does an excellent job of including the most informative and relative literature, studies and theories available today. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the study of organizational leadership, leading teams, leading change or studying follower-based approaches toward leadership. 5 stars (Marc! Au Contrare!) - Not worth curling up to a fire with? ... For me, after a year or more I still read some portion or another of this book nearly every week for the rich survey of ideas and theories it provides, often finding something that fits what I'm concerned about, and then springboarding into buying another book or digging out original research articles and papers to dig deeper. The New Clay- Techniques and Approaches to Jewelry Making

5 stars (The Book that started it all for Polymer Clay) - It was the first book about PC. It was the only book available for quite some time. Many of the most renowned PC artists started with this book and you can see the influence in their work. I have just about every PC book there is and this one has some of the best explanations of the underlying basic methods available. Sort of like the "alphabet" of PC. I reread it often. I consider it a reference book rather than a project book. I have seen another very new PC enthusiast buy the book and dislike it (as a previous reviewer mentioned.) I think this comes from someone making a cursory review of the pictures in the book and deciding that is not what they want to make. I think they may have missed the trees for the forest. There is a lot of depth there. I highly recommend it for anyone serious about learning polymer clay. 1 stars (Disappointed) - I am extremely disappointed with this book. I bought it because I thought it would provide more ideas for "Jewelry Making"-it did not. The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work - A Practical Guide from the Country-s Foremost Relati

5 stars (Action oriented advice for today's couples) - I found this book to be very helpful and therapeutic. The first chapter is a little challenging to get through but after that I found practical insight into common challenges faced by today's couples as well as excercises and action items to overcome these challenges. There is a lot to read but I found it well worth the time. I would definitely recommend this book for any committed couple regardless of whether or not you have major problems in your relationship. The book sheds light on how to discuss problems in a reasonable fashion and does not put any unreasonable expectations on you to always agree with your spouse. It even acknowledges that individual relationships are likely to have their own set of perpetual problems that will never be solvable but teaches you have to cope with these issues as a couple. 5 stars (The 7 Principles for Making Marriage Work) - An excellent, research based text that offers practical information. It's about real life rather than Hallmark movie portrayals of relationships and offers many ways to work on repairing, rekindling, and maintaining loving feelings in a marriage. It's well presented, clear, easy to read and suited all readers. The Art of Metal Clay

5 stars (Precious metal clay book) - This is a wonderful book. It came quickly and is a great price. I am always pleased with buying from Amazon. 5 stars (Great book to learn from) - I have recently been interested in polymer clay and when I found out that there was Metal Clay I was very excited. In hopes to find out more, I recently ordered Sherri Haab book as well as Precious Metal Clay in Mixed Media, by Mary Ann Devos. Sherri's book is a much better book for me as a beginner. I'm more of a visual learner and I do better with picture steps, which this book has. Very detailed written and pictured steps that help guide me through the projects. It includes creative uses of tools that can easily be found around the house or at a local thift store. She also shows detailed ideas of how to mix different mediums together. I feel like my projects will have more of a success rate do to this book. 5 stars (I LOVE this book!) - Great projects, great photography and easy to follow instructions. Wine for Dummies

5 stars (A very good start) - He very good start if you want to know more about wine. A must for everyone who loves wine and wants to have a clear overview 5 stars (Gets One Into & Clarifies A Difficult Topic) - Wine is complex with all its grapes and regions and producers. This book helps to simplify and compartmentalize much of this complexity into useable, workable info. Start with grape types and clear away the snobbish smoke of much of the vino knowledge, this book delves into wine lists when dining and labels when purchasing. Extremely useful are chapters are serving and storing and collecting from major wine areas. Least useful part which could use more is pairing with food. One might benefit also from reading Andrea Immer's books which to this reader clarify and provide food pairing info in superb style and manner. 5 stars (Good Intro without the Snobbery) - There may be more in-depth wine books out there, and there are certainly more academic books out there on the subject, but most of them scare the average reader with their pages of pomposity and attitudes so high and mighty that they induce nosebleeds. But finally there's a wine book for amateur wine enthusiasts who don't have a wine cave handy or a budget to road trip the Napa Valley or Bordeaux. The books takes the reader from the very basics of wine, its history, and all the terms used in wine making and wine tasting. What's particularly helpful is how the book is divides wine into geographic chapters so the reader can get the feel for the region, which helps immensely when differentiating the specific wine types. What's also quite nice is the humorous, down-to-earth attitude of its authors, who see wine as something to be enjoyed by all, not just an elite few, and, in fact, the book is peppered with "Snob Alerts" to warn readers of particular wine trivia that the nosebleed, blue-blood types like to toss about. Patternmaking for Fashion Design Paper 4th Edition

5 stars (Excellent resource) - This book contains everything the experienced person needs to get a good start at making their own patterns. Obviously, you'd need to be at least at the intermediate level to even contemplate a larger project . . . 4 stars (A plea from a taller woman) - A tall woman with shoulders broadened by swimming, I spent hours looking for clothes (in flattering colors) that actually fit. Although I hadn't sewn much since I was in 4-H more than 30 years ago, I was inspired when I saw the marvelous patterns in this book and was able to follow the instructions fairly readily. This work, and the marvelous book, the Triumph of Individual Style by Carla Mathis and Helen Connor, have allowed me to dress in both flattering and expressive ways. Simultaneously, I would love it if Ms. Armstrong would include in future editions information relevant to pattern making and modification for the thousands and thousands of women taller than the sizes specified in standard misses patterns, information that I ended up culling from less comprehensive books on pattern alteration. 5 stars (A godsend) - I learned to sew a long time ago as a little girl, and as ten year old I could not identify with the outdated sketches in the pattern drafting books my mother had in her possession. This book on the other hand inspires creativity, I look in it and I see her explaining methods that result in clothes close to what you see on the runway. She doesn't get into haute couture but you can make some pretty darn amazing stuff using her instructions. She also includes variations and encourages readers to practice or at least figure out the method used to achieve it. I did think that she could have had more clearly defined areas for her basic blocks, and she really didn't delve deeply enough into pants for me. Overall though I am thrilled with this book and even though in my money it is six times the price you see, I think it was a great investment! ...

5 stars (jewelry rave) - This book is a must have for anyone who wants to create beauty with metals, but does not have safe access to a torch. I live in a condo, and had to find an available 'lab' whenever I wanted to complete a piece of jewelry. I have moved on to a new style of fabrication, and love it. 5 stars (An outstanding book on cold-connections.) - A cold connection = any connection made without heat. Joanna has put together a fantastic book that brings together many different cold connection techniques. I have yet to find another jewelry making book that covered as many cold techniques that this one does. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to enhance their jewelry making skills, but is not yet ready to move to the use of a torch for soldering. 5 stars (Great book for beginners!!) - This is an excellent book for beginners or those who are slightly more advanced in jewellery making. The jewellery in this book is made stricly with cold connections, no soldering or heating involved. For the more advanced, such as myself, I find this book great for inspiration to include cold connections in my designs. I HONESTLEY SAY THIS WITH FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE, BECAUSE I MYSELF AM CURRENTLY A DESIGN STUDENT, AND I HAD TO PURCHASE THIS BOOK FOR A MAJOR PART OF MY INTERIOR DESIGN EDUCATION. 2 stars (with poor pix, this is too much) - I was astonished with poor quality of BW pictures this book contains. And I paid $50 for this? The photos are poorly lit so the details are not clear, and not sharp enough for this kind of printing. Texts are rather sketchy too. Intrestingly, resources contain a section for books on presentation models. I found most of them are out of print. I can just imagine this book's innitial run was so low that gave this hefty price tag to this book. Unless you have a lot of money to waste, or you're advanced, you'll be surprised like me. 5 stars (Designing With Models Designing With Models) - From the standpoint of representation, and despite the advent of computer graphics and animation, the architectural model has persisted in being a privileged way of expressing architectural intentions. The irresistible iconic relation between the model and the building, and the intimacy witnessed through this association, has unquestionably contributed to this survival. Because in the model no extra interpretive energy is needed to grasp the intended, and because there is definitely a pleasure in seeing something big represented by something similar to it but smaller, the critical denigration of model-making has been minimum. This is unlike the case of the plan and other classical modes of projecting buildings where the conventional nature of representation has opened the gates for questioning their legitimacy. New Complete Guide to Sewing

4 stars (Another edition, and the first is still the best...) - I have the FIRST edition, 1976, of this book...it is actually just as fact-filled as the new edition, and it hasn't the glitz of color through-out, though it has color plates. But, the information is great in both editions, and I urge the sewer to have this book around. I use it still for reference and refreshing the memory of things I do in sewing too seldom to remember! The new one seems devoid of the neat home projects the first edition had, and they are really retro now!!! 4 stars (Nice overview of sewing techniques) - I purchased this book when I had a general understanding of sewing and wanted to improve my skills without having to take sewing classes. I refer to this book when I have a slight understanding of what I'm doing and need to see the details about how it's done step by step. This book does just that - no skipped steps, illustrations for every step. There are few photos, but the drawings actually serve you better because you can see the seams more clearly. The book covers a very wide range of assembly techniques, which is quite helpful if you've got a blouse all done but are stuck on sewing the collar. I have bought a lot of sewing books and find that any that include "complete guide to..." in the title try to cover too many topics and lack the detailed content many of us are searching for. If you are really lost on how to do pattern alterations or working with knits etc., you will be much happier with a book that only deals with that topic and has the space to give you in-depth instructions. You learn about how fine pieces are made. Good book to see if you are really interested in this craft. It is a wonderful book and great instructions however, it is not for the beader. 4 stars (Fundamental Olap principles) - I was impressed by the quality of this book; this is probably the most complete book on OLAP theory and is a fundamental reading for professionals involved in the design of olap systems. In most cases it gives all the details and information needed to master this technology. It also contains some practical examples that are very useful to see how the theory can be applied in the real world. I didn't read the first edition, but the second edition contains new sections and many updates, like a description of SQL-99 OLAP extensions. The author chose to be vendor-independent, so all practical examples are based on a multidimensional language that he created, called Located Contents (LC). However, when I read it I had already used a couple of OLAP tools (Microsoft Analysis Services and Microstrategy), and I think that this helped me understand many of the concepts contained in the book. 4 stars (Good OLAP Methodology) - OLAP is a somewhat arcane corner of the IT universe and this book is a good guide to it for information and business professionals. It covers the basics well and provides decent exaples to get you going. Of course, the hardest part of OLAP is making the conceptual leap from relational databases and transactional processing to the world of analytical processing, but finance experts and accountants will appreciate OLAP and its ability to summarize data in a way that is hard to do in most ERP and legacy systems. 5 stars (A must read for anybody involved in Olap design) - A book which gives you a comprehensive theoretical foundation together with useful, pratical techniques to design Olap solutions. In the first half of the book the author explains you all you need to think clearly in N dimensions, in the second half he guides you through the design of a rather complex application, stepping into the purchasing process, the material inventory analysis, sales & marketing, and activity-based management.
