A Hidden Wholeness - The Journey Toward an Undivided Life

5 stars (A book for everyman) - By everyman I mean, of course, men and women, young and old, retired and working, republicans and democrats, believers and non-believers. This is a book I wish I'd found years ago (before it was written)! Almost everyone lives the divided life. (I suspect the Dalai Lama does not). As Palmer notes, sometimes we have to -- this is a choice we sometimes must choose to make. One of the reasons I love this book so is that Palmer does not have rigid judgmental expectations of us (we probably are harsh enough on ourselves). He offers guidelines and explanations for the human condition, and some help on getting through. Parker Palmer takes a long time Quaker practice -- the Clearness Committee - and uses it to provide for everyone a Circle of Trust. This mutual support network is unusual -- it isn't an advisory committee but more support for listening to that inner voice which we may joke about, but which exists (you know, the one you should have listened to, that nagging feeling, that annoying little warning sign). One thing that makes us crazy is the denial of that inner voice, our true self, the divided side of self that knows the questionable aspects of our work life, the one we hush up so we can get by and make a living. This isn't just a teacher's issue or a spiritual issue. For some it may be a spiritual divide; for others, a more humanistic one. In any case, we become emotionally, mentally and otherwise unbalanced if our day to day movements and choices feel separate from -- or in conflict with -- our beliefs and values, and yet we deny that they are so. We do not allow ourselves to hear that inner voice, afraid of the changes we might have to make. We smush it down, despite knowing intellectually that anything you smush down in one area pops up in another. This book offers recognition of this conflict we are in, and gives us ways we can listen without, necessarily, having to make changes that will make us walk ou...

Down Came the Rain - My Journey Through Postpartum Depression

4 stars (Rainy days) - Despite the misinformed rantings of people like Tom Cruise, clinical depression is a terrible and widespread problem. The best description I've heard yet is that it's a cancer of the soul. And of all the types, postpartum depression is perhaps the most neglected -- some people don't even know it exists, let alone how it should be treated. That is the heart of Brooke Shields' memoir "Down Came the Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression." This is not a glitzy showbiz autobiography, but a wrenching look at one woman's struggle to have a baby, and then to regain her own happiness. In 2001, Shields married producer/writer Chris Henchy, and soon they were trying for a baby. But because of cervical scarring, getting pregnant was difficult, and despite all the people prattling about adoption and relaxation, Shields and Henchy tried in vitro fertilization (IVF), and after a traumatic miscarriage, finally had a baby girl. But baby Rowan was less than a day old when Shields began feeling depression and anxiety attacks. Initially she chalked this up to the difficult C-section birth and the newness of the experience, but her feelings continued over the months that followed. Though she tried to tackle her postpartum depression by herself, the help of friends and the drug Paxil were what brought her back out of the pit. The first fifty pages of "Down Came the Rain" make it seem like this will be an up-and-down story, with generous amounts of self-deprecating humour. Shields lightens the mood with humour and a willingness to reveal her unflattering or goofy thoughts, such as thinking about those chest-bursting scenes from "Alien" during a C-section. But after that, a grimmer tone takes over the book. Shields' detailed descriptions of her torment, doubts and increasingly deteriorated life are almost harrowing, as well as her description of how she couldn't even connect with her newborn daughter. It's exhilarating when she finally beats the po...

The Journey of Adulthood- Fifth Edition

1 stars (HORRABLE) - In my 4 years as an undergraduate i have never read such a poorly written book. She has more typo's then I have including multiple references to the NEO-PR (NEO-PI-R). She incorrectly summarizes groundbreaking research (i.e. Ceci, Rosenblum, & Debruyn, 1999). Her feminist agenda flows freely all over this book along with usless stories about her self that dont add to the text. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK FOR YOUR CLASS. You and your students will regret it. 4 stars (Increasing understanding of Aging) - Hellen Bee is able to carry one through the years of adulthood through many avenues. Using scientific studies she interprets the data in meaningful ways. Inclusion of personal accounts and her conversational style make the reading interesting. The book continually ties previous ideas to new concepts giving a nice continuity. I especially enjoyed her occasional insertions of the not-so-scientific spiritual aspects of the adult experience, which I was not expecting in a textbook. My ideas of what it means to grow old were challenged and changed during the reading of this book. Some myths of adulthood are adeptly smashed making the thought of aging not such a frightful one. The only criticism I would include is that occasionally the point being made was not clear to me and a few conclusions seem to have contradictory statements in following chapters. That may be expected in the field of psychology, however. ...

Where God Was Born - A Journey by Land to the Roots of Religion

5 stars (Superb tour guide with sermons of biblical locations) - As he did with the prequel WALKING THE BIBLE: A JOURNEY BY LAND THROUGH THE FIVE BOOKS OF MOSES, Bruce Feiler combines a tour guide of biblical locations with intriguing annotations and "sermons" lifted from ancient times but also includes modern events. WHERE GOD WAS BORN: A JOURNEY BY LAND TO THE ROOTS OF RELIGION starts with Joshua and continues on through to the Babylonian captivity and the Diaspora written by a fine author who describes what he observes first hand. Well written with incredible insight somewhat thanks to archeological companion Avner Goren, readers will appreciate this fabulous journey that goes way beyond just Israel's' borders as the author finds greatness in the non-Jewish Semite cultures of the region as much as he embraces being a Jew. Because he and Mr. Goren are not armchair travelers, but instead visit the locales described, this superb reference work and his previous excellent nonfictions are inspirational for us religious moderates who believe in tolerance for all; suicidal extremists or intelligent designers who share in common their faith is the divine one need to pass as these groups will reinterpret the simple underlying moral message of Mr. Feiler's strong belief in the words of the bible. Harriet Klausner 5 stars (Praise this welcome perspective on religion) - Feiler is passionate about his own beliefs in his own religion, but never used that as an excuse to beat other readers into following his perspective in this latest work. I admire his articulate and sophisticated critique of religion and the state. Because it is so easy for anybody to become wrapped up in religious extremism while practicing their own perspective, Feiler's work needs to be studied by people of all perspectives seeking a balanced--and thus peaceful alternative to both history and current events. 5 stars (Should be required reading for people of all faiths) - Feiler's newest book offe...

Journey Of Souls

5 stars (Really Thought Provoking....) - The material is all gleened from hypnosis clients - no proof. However it resonated with me as the most logical of realities. -In my world it gave me a feeling of a paradigm shift. -- I now better understand the odd pairings of children and parents, the compulsions and the feelings of "out of sync" in a whole new light. I would highly reccommend it to people interested in the "whys" of life and the "where do we go from here". 5 stars (Revealing!) - The best book I've ever read regarding reincarnation, past lives or where we go between lives. This is my favorite "gift" to give to anyone. Dr. Newton shares his case studies with us in a very understandable format that makes the reader not want to put the book down. 5 stars (A life-changer) - A life is transient--we're born, we live, we die--but the soul goes on, born into a new body, gathering experiences lifetime after lifetime. These accumulated life experiences influence the current, active lifetime on a subconscious level, and some traumatic experiences leave troubling footprints on one's current life. Dr.Newton (Ph.D.)shows through case histories of patients who have been "regressed" (scientific and verifiable), that a contemporary stumbling block can resolved by identifying the trauma that created it. For example, a mystifying pain in this lifetime can be a "soul memory" of an injury in a past life; or a current pathological fear of water is from a "soul memory" of drowning in a past life. Then there are the souls who are so deeply connected that they have share many lifetimes as siblings, and close friends, and spouses. What was most fascinating to me was the "memory" of what happens between lives, when we return to our "soul groups," review our lives, see what lessons we have learned and which ones we have to try again. In short, life is school for the soul. Is there matriculation? Yes, in a sense there is in that we learn and move on. Are there trips to the principals ...

The Baptist Health Care Journey to Excellence - Creating a Culture that WOWs-

5 stars (Inspiring, Instructive, Energizing. Must Read.) - When Gordon Bethune, then President and CEO of Continental Airlines, wrote "From Worst to First" in 1999, executives in all fields were fascinated by his tale of how he turned around a company that many had given up for dead. He told the story and unquestionably his leadership was paramount in Continental's incredible success. Of course, as you might expect from a true leader, he shared the achievement with everyone in the organization. The tale of the turnaround, the awards, and the ongoing success helped thousands of executives and managers improve their operations. Now Al Stubblefield steps forward in his role as President and CEO of Baptist Health Care in Pensacola, Florida. When he assumed this leadership position in 1999, he faced major challenges...but he and his team were already on the journey to excellence. The picture was bleak when the transformation began in 1995: patient satisfaction was at an all-time low, morale was dangerously low. The 5,500 employees of this largest healthcare organization in northwest Florida worked together to become recognized by FORTUNE magazine as one of the 100 Best Places to Work, was recognized as an Employer of Choice?# , and received the Malcolm Baldrige Award in 2004. The story of how this was accomplished rivals the saga of Continental Airlines. The Baptist Health Care achievement ranks as one of the most valuable case studies you'll read. Stubblefield takes you on their journey, explaining what was done and how it was done. Examples and illustrations illuminate the text, making the path even easier to follow. Applying what you'll learn in these pages will empower you to move your organization, regardless of your field of endeavor, to substantially higher levels of performance. Read this book now...before your competitors do! ...

A New Kind of Christian- A Tale of Two Friends on a Spiritual Journey

5 stars (WHAT IF CHRISTIANITY IS THE MOST DANGEROUS THING TO CHRIST??? ) - Christianity Today called A NEW KIND OF CHRISTIAN the most dangerous book this year to Christianity. This may be true, but what if Christianity is the most dangerous thing to Christ??? McLaren's book points toward a real and honest relationship with Christ like no other book I've read. It is culturally relevant without contradicting the Word of God. It IS challenging, but that is a good thing. It is a GOOD thing when someone makes you think outside the box. You don't have to be threatened by that or agree with what they said. Many of the reviews I've read about this book communicate fear, but NOTHING that McLaren said contradicted Christ's life and teachings. If we look at Christ, we will see that it was the RELIGIOUS PEOPLE he was constantly rebuking during his ministry. RELIGION is one of the most threatening things to Christ. McLaren encourages his readers to look to scripture and try looking past the self-serving institution we have created and given the name of "church". "Church" is not supposed to be the country club we've created it to be but a body of believers, seeking Christ. Read the book and genuinely ask Christ to help you discern McLaren's words. If it is not of God, He will give you the wisdom and protection from that. 5 stars (Thought provoking and honest...) - This is a great beginner read to bring in new ideas and theology that will help people who are struggling with how their faith is not only relevant, but also authentic and Christian in the postmodern world. This is an awesome book. 1 stars (A Familiar Kind of Heretic) - King Solomon told us in the Book of Ecclesiastes that there "Is nothing new under the sun." When we reach a time of spiritual crisis, like Brian McLaren's pastor, Dan did in this book, we can react in a number of ways. As Christians we should go back to our roots, to the Creator God, to Jesus, to His words in the Bible, to the people who love us. Or...

Journey of an Art Quilter - Creative Strategies and Techniques

5 stars (Journey of an Art Quilter) - Barbara Olson shares a lot of her knowledge and encourages each and everyone of us to become the artist we were meant to be. I would say that this is not a beginning quilter book but an intermediate to advanced intermediate quilt book. Barbara is sharing and inspiring. Illustrations and directions are clear and this is a very readable book. 5 stars (Sophisticated and Inspiring) - This is not your ordinary show and tell book. The projects are sophisticated and inspiring. Instructions are comprehensive and easy to follow even for a beginner, but an advanced quilter would be impressed and could learn a thing or two. 1 stars (Journey of an Art Quilter: Creative Strategies and Techniques) - I thought it was a very interesting, creative, inspiring book. It gave me some things to think about and i enjoyed the pictures of her quilts. ...

The Longest Journey- Adventure Game of the Year Edition

3 stars (I've played it twice, and only twice) - I agree with all the other reviews, there's LOTS of dialog. But I've found an answer! I've found if you press the Esc key, it will skip over dialog. Some things you need to hear, because it gives reference to where to go next. But most of it can be overlooked, I think. The second time I played it, I skipped all the dialog and actually PLAYED the game. The scenes are great, too. Lots of detail. It's a good game, but I love MYST more. Syberia & Syberia 2 are good games too. I would say they are superiour to The Longest Journey. But you can make up your own mind. 5 stars (A wonderful game) - A very good game. It's all about the good story. 2 stars (The Longest Journal -- er, I mean Journey!) - I'll make this short: This game is BORING! It has nice graphics, a so-so storyline, lots of unnecessary cussing/VULGAR language, and WAY TOO MUCH DIALOG!!! I can't tell you what the ending is, because I'm only halfway done and ready to fall asleep. SAVE YOUR MONEY! (I only paid [...] and it's not worth that!) ...

Super Great game for younger kids) - *We have purchased other games that have been too advanced & frustrating. This one is not!!! *Good for ages 4-6 depending on maturity of child. *Easy to understand, the paths are easy to follow, the tasks make the child feel confident in their ability to complete them, and the concept is similar to the show so there already is an understanding of what is expected. *The graphics are pretty good, but simple, appear a little "flat." *Some scenes change angles and there is a super tiny, 2 sec loading period. Not a problem, but worth mentioning because I know it bugs some people. *Basically, Dora has a destination, and with Boots' help, she must collect things, complete tasks, and of course, Watch Out for Swiper the Fox! *VAMANOS! The Endurance - Shackleton-s Legendary Antarctic Expedition

5 stars (Great book with outstanding pictures) - In reading this book I am amazed at the needless hardships these men have endured and even thou they failed how much you can learn about leadership in this book. The lack of common since surely hurt them to no end. I felt Shackleton even thou always optimistic among the men did not learn from his past failures or obtain very much common since but put his own desire to succeed before the safety or well being of the men. Overall it is a very interesting story and I enjoyed the pictures immensely it really brings the story to life. 5 stars (Enduring 'Endurance'.) - An excellent book, lavishly illustrated, which considerably enhances this absorbing tale of hardship and courage in bitter weather conditions, which would otherwise bt difficult to visualise. 1 stars (Read Alfred Lansing's Book) - Several days after purchasing Caroline Alexander's, "The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition" from Amazon.com, I read a few customer reviews that recommended Alfred Lansing's 1959 classic: "Endurance: Shakelton's Incredible Journey." These reviews extolled Lansing's book, and pointed-out how Alexander's was essentially a rewrite of this earlier work. Consequently, I also purchased his book, and thoroughly enjoyed reading the two of them while on vacation a few weeks ago. (I had already begun Alexander's book -- so, completed it before beginning Lansing's.) Alexander's book has one (and only one) distinct and obvious advantage over Lansing's -- the inclusion of scores of the original expedition photographs taken by Frank Hurley (the ship's photographer). These photos are incredible and make Alexander's book indispensable to anyone interested in Shakelton's Endurance expedition. That said -- here's why I gave her book only ONE STAR. In the Acknowledgements" section of her book, Alexander makes only a one sentence reference to Lansing's earlier work -- something to the effect of, "An exciting sea adventure." (a...

Season of Life- A Football Star- a Boy- a Journey to Manhood

5 stars (Caught-up in the story) - Jeffrey Marx began to contact "old" Baltimore Colts' players after "saying" goodbye to fabled Memorial Stadium just before its demolition in 2001. One of those players was Joe Ehrmann, the All-Pro leader of the Colts' "Sack Pack" in the 70's. Ehrmann had nicknamed him, Brillo, when Marx was a Colts' ballboy. At that time, Ehrmann was an example of a the stereo-typical fun-loving, hard partying and substance abusing athlete that "graces" the news from time to time. When Marx traced down this former Colt, he found that much had changed. After thirteen years of professional football, Ehrmann's "calling" had finally found him. He had since founded and led a wholistic ministry in Baltimore's inner city for 20 years and was volunteering as a coach at Baltimore's Gilman School. He had founded "Building Men for Others" and was also serving on the staff of a Baltimore area church. As Marx traces Joe's journey and the journey of the Gilman School's 2001 season, he is drawn into his own "journey to manhood." His "side-by-side" story-telling draws in the reader as well. A very good read and must reading for every father, for every father's son and for every woman who wants to better relate to the men in her life. 5 stars (Should be required reading for coaches) - I bought this book as I was told it was an inspiration. It truly is, and I've passed it along to many people, most importantly anyone who works with kids. With such an emphasis on "winning at all costs" these days, this puts being on a "team" into perspective. I then thought it would make a great gift for my daughter's coaches. It is one of the best books I've read, and think it should be required reading for all coaches!!! Lisa 5 stars (You don't have to love football to love this book!) - Loved SEASON OF LIFE by Jeffrey Marx . . . it is the author's account of the Gilman High School football team that is unlike any sports book that I've ever read, in that it is more about ...

It-s Not About the Bike- My Journey Back to Life

5 stars (An Inspirational Story and Individual!) - The book covers Lance Armstrong's life - from birth, to his first bike, initial cycling successes, cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery, returning to cycling to win the Tour de France, and becoming a first-time father. The book is hard to put down, and well-worth reading. Lance's mother was only 17 when he was born, played a very large role in his development, and continues to be very close to him. His father left before Lance reached his second birthday, and she worked two jobs while finishing school and raising Lance. She taught Lance never to quit. Lance got his first bike at age seven, and loved it. In high-school he tried football (not coordinated enough), then swimming (the 12-year-old was initially put in with 7-year-olds) and soon became quite good. At age thirteen Lance entered and won his first jr. triathalon, followed by another in Houston, and by age 15 was entering adult competitions, going from 15th place the first year to 5th the second. Lance began earning $20,000/year as a competitor, and then ended up winning the World Championship in Norway. Before this happened, however, Lance had to learn racing tactics (eg. saving himself until close to the end), and as often as not became too eager and faded before the finish. Then came cancer - described by Lance as the "best thing that happened to me." Early symptoms were attributed to "bicycle injury," or "flu." However, after coughing up blood, Lance sought help - eventually resulting in the diagnosis of advanced testicular cancer which had spread to the lungs (12 locations) and his brain (2 locations). Initial testical removal and chemotherapy took place in Austin, with little adverse impact. Getting a second opinion took him to Houston, and a third in Indianapolis, where brain surgery and much more aggressive chemotherapy were undertaken. Lance not only lost all his hair, but also ended up with prolonged daily retching. Along the way, Lance ...
