The Glass Castle - A Memoir

5 stars (Excellent) - This book was excellent. Recently i have started to get into "memoirs" and Jeannette Walls memoirs was one of the best! Her parents...they give new definition to the word crazy! Jeanette cooked her own hotdogs at the tender age of 3 she was also caught fire by cooking those very same hotdogs at the age of 3...her family was always doing the "ske-daddle" from bill collectors so they were constantly on the move. Jeannete has two sisters and one brother. Her mom is a very eccentric woman who loves to paint and teaches her children to always be "self-sufficient" her father is a drunk but she loves him deeply. They move from town to town all over the mid-west to the west coast. They go from rats being on their kitchen counters and in their sugar bowls to eating "lard sandwiches" at her grandmother Erma's house. This is a book that will keep you interested from start to finish. Never a dull moment. I highly recommend it. 5 stars (Shocking Yet Truly Charming) - I loved this book. The author writes in such a style that enables the reader to absorb the harshness of her tale - without being angry. Her childhood was what it was. As adults, we cannot do anything about a tough or neglectful childhood. I applaud the author for telling it like she remembers it. Best book I have read in a while. 3 stars (Horrifying if True) - There seems to be some doubt as to the veracity of Walls's memoir. It does seem as though certain situations are far too detailed to be credible rememberances of a 3-year-old or even a slightly older child. However, the book is an absorbing read, which is why I gave it three stars. No stars, even as birthday gifts, for the self-absorbed, sick parents who brought their children up in such a lazy, dangerous way (if Walls's account is true). A mother who hides candy from her starving children? Refuses treatment for her burned, blistered daughter? A father who throws the family cat out of a moving car but protests when a mountain lion is...

Educational Psychology- Developing Learners 4th Edition

5 stars (Interesting, practical intro to ed'l psych'y for teachers) - In a highly readable manner, Jeanne Ormrod introduces educational psychology for K-12 teachers. She incorporates many of the learning principles and teaching practices her text espouses by using colorfully illustrated and highlighted multiple formats throughout, such as summaries, case studies, classroom applications and examples, emphasis of major points, and learning exercises. The three major sections address learner diversity, how students learn, and becoming an effective teacher. She outlines seven themes for effective learning which she addresses in every section: interaction, information processing, relevance, classroom climate, challenge, expectations, and diversity. The text cites educational research throughout (there is an index with 44 pages of references) yet the paragraphs have a readibility and easy flow to them. Ormrod's chapters consistently address her goals as an author: focusing on cores principles, relating them to our own behavior, processing them effectively and applying them in the classroom. The phrase "interesting textbook," usually an oxymoron, in this case is well-deserved praise. ...

Dos mundos Student edition w- Listening Comprehension CD

3 stars (A LONG WAIT FOR PRODUCT) - I ordered this product on the 3rd of August via expedited (2 day)shipping and it did not get here until the 13th of August!! Class started here on the 15th. The product itself was as it stated, so I can not complain about that. I would not use this shipper unless you have plenty of time to wait. 1 stars (Unhappy) - I was looking for a student workbook for practice in spanish. I ordered this book because it was listed as "like new",it took me almost three weeks to get it and when I did I found the worksheets for the first five chapters were cut out. I am now approaching my first term exam for those same chapters and have no book to review. 5 stars (The Best Spanish Resource I've ever Come Across) - I think that "Dos Mundos" is an excellent resource for both teachers AND students. I disagree that study of the book needs to be accompanied by teacher instruction and supervision. The beauty of the text, in my opinion, is that it makes self-teaching very easy. The grammar section at the back of each chapter is clearly explained in English, and there is a complete vocabulary list at the end of each chapter. The other beauty of the book is that it creates the closest thing to language immerson that you can get out of a book. There are many articles from Spanish-speakers, written in very natural Spanish. As for the person upset about the Mexican Spanish, I can't say that I agree with you. I was pleasantly surprised because the book actually has samplings of the language from all over the Spanish world. But in order to avoid confusion (which would make sense), they stuck to one main form of Spanish - Spain Spanish. I recommend this book for ANYONE - teacher and students (from beginner level write up to the advanced learner) ...

Six IT Decisions Your IT People Shouldn-t Make HBR OnPoint Enhanced Edition

5 stars (Advice to business execs: How to not let IT eat your company) - The core of this ten-page enhanced article from the Harvard Business Review is that companies which successfully manage their IT "generate as much as 40% higher returns" than do others. The authors claim that these successful companies are the ones whose business executives articulate a clear strategy for IT in six specific areas. This advice contrasts with the common wisdom that it is up to IT to "align their processes" with the business of the company. Without clear direction, IT directors push their staff to implement every technology that is considered standard for their industry. The result is a mishmash of expensive, generic systems that add little value to the company and an "overwhelmed and demoralized" IT department. The authors address the question of outsourcing in a side-bar. Since they have identified CEO's who abdicate their leadership role as the prime cause of ineffective IT, it's not surprising that companies who simply outsource the whole IT function are often "dissatisfied" with the results. Ross and Weill offer the surprising advice that it would be better to retain IT in-house and let IT executives decide which functions "don't matter" and can be cost-effectively subcontracted. The summary section in this enhanced article refers to "IT executives" who make "key decisions"; "IT people" who "shouldn't make decisions"; and an "IT department" to "blame" when an IT initiative fails. That confusion of terms may inadvertently say a great deal about the mismatch between external expectations of IT departments and their internal structure. The article provides the careful reader a great deal to think about. It offers a useful counterweight and complement to Nicholas Carr's HBR article, "IT Doesn't Matter". ...

Big-Needle Knit Afghans

3 stars (Beautiful Ideas - Full of Mistakes) - A beautifully photographed book of afgans for beginning to advanced knitters. How discouraging can it be to start a project, and realize things just don't "add up". If you are a knitter, you know what I mean. I contacted the publisher and pointed out a number of errors in their directions. Surprisingly, they sent me two pages of Editorial corrections, most of them identified by readers. All I can say is, BEWARE, and call the publisher and ask for the Editorial corrections OR you try to figure out if there is a mistake in the directions. Just have fun!! 3 stars (Beautiful patterns, needs better editor) - I love this book. The patterns are beautiful and easy to follow, the pictures are stunning, and I expect to get a lot of use out of it in the coming years. However, I'm working on my first afghan from the book, and there are two mistakes in the pattern. It's on page 52, and the pattern doesn't work unless you cast on 154 stitches instead of 152, and there's a psso missing from Row 11 - without it, the row is a disaster of increasing stitches that would probably result in a giant triangle. I'm about 80 rows into the afghan, which had to be restarted three times in order to work out these typos, but now is coming along beautifully. But it makes me wonder what other typos are in store for me on the other pages. 4 stars (Excellent source book for a variety of afghans) - This book has plenty of afghans in various styles, from Bavarian traveling stitch (difficult) to garter blocks (easy.) All are designed in yarns you can find fairly easily on the Web or Ebay or in yarn shops. The styles also vary from lacy, openwork, to fairisle, to colorblock, to dense cables or texture. So there is a bit of something for everyone. I found the color choices mundane, but with some imagination (or even scanning software followed by image manipulation) you could envision an aqua lace block afghan in a stunning creamy taupe rather tha...
