Getting to Yes- Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In

4 stars (A Classic that has been superceded.) - Getting to Yes started a revolution in negotiation, both by stressing principled negotiation and in making the material accessible to a very wide audience. It is still a good read, is still taught in universities and continuing education, and is an excellent starting point for people who are new to negotiation but intend a deep study because of its historical significance and its content. However, having taught Getting to Yes and having used principled bargaining in practice, I think there are a few shortcomings that are dealt with in other books. While Fischer and Ury do make the point that principled bargaining includes sticking to your priciples and not being a pushover, it is not emphasized enough. I have even found myself being too cooperative after reviewing this text because the emphasis is on being cooperative. I think this is a partcular danger for new/lay negotiators, especially if this is the first text they're exposed to or they intend to practice these concepts in daily life. The tone of the book is just a bit too friendly. As a result, there has been a backlash (wrongly, in my opinion) against this text in some quarters. The verbal judo section at the end is excellent, giving techniques for dealing with unreasonable people that are great. I would've liked more of these very practical tips and examples to go along with them, but the book as a whole is already a lot to digest. Newer versions of GTY do add more material here. Newer texts take these problems into account. The best, in my opinion, is the follow-on by Ury, "Getting Past No." It can be read without having read "Getting to Yes," although it is very interesting as a follow-on, too. In it, Ury is clearly taking into account the criticism that GTY was too soft and he presents a more robust vision of principled bargaining. 4 stars (Powerful Concepts) - A good primer or review for anyone confounded by negotiating and especially those pr...

ServSafe Coursebook with the Scantron Certification Exam Form

1 stars (Don't buy this one if you are currently enrolled in a class!) - This is the out of print edition and doesn't contain the 2001 updates that most schools will test you on. 5 stars (great book and very helpful) - This book helped me a tremendous amount getting through the national certifation exam. Every three years we have to up date our certifation in California. I also purchased the Study Guide for the National Servsafe Exam: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations ISBN 0971999678 which is also on amazon. This book covers all levels of food safety. I highly recommend it, especially if it's your first time taking the course or exam. 5 stars (Very detailed and great pictures) - I live in Washington State where it's required to be certified in sanitation before applying for a job. I bought this book and also bought the Study Guide for the National Servsafe Exam: Key Reviews Questions and Answers with Explanations (ISBN: 0971999678) and it helped me pass the course and the national certification test. This study guide covers all necessary information you need to know to work in a restaurant or any other type of food service job. ...

Textiles 9th Edition

5 stars (Excellent insight for Seamstress) - I had been searching through all of the sewing books I could find to learn more about the nature of fabric and fibers...and everything I could possibly want to know was here, and more. Absolutely fascinating. It is a textbook, but was written clearly enough that anyone with an interest in the area can easily understand it. I've been teaching classes to costumers and members of the local American Sewing Guild, who are equally impressed with the knowledge we got from this book. 5 stars (Connecting Textiles and Science) - I use this book as the text for teaching a basic textiles course for sophmores. This text provides a sound foundation for students understanding the textiles and the science foundations that are the base for predicting textile performance. Every line is packed with information; there is no fluff in this book. If you want to understand WHY textiles and textile products perform in specific ways, this is the book to buy. ...

Over a Barrel - Breaking the Middle East Oil Cartel

1 stars (Don't get me started...) - As the author of two books on Peak Oil, I admit to having a bias. Even so, I'd be happy to discuss Learsy's book in an even-handed way, questioning his arguments by stating counter-arguments, and supporting those with data. However, it is impossible to do this because Learsy makes no real effort to mount a scientific case in favor of his cornucopian assertions about plentiful oil for decades to come. Instead, what he offers in his chapter "debunking" peak oilers is logical fallacy upon logical fallacy, with nary a fact to break the monotony. His favorite form of fallacy is the straw man: he attacks geologists like Hubbert, Campbell, and Laherrere for predicting that global oil production will follow a smooth bell curve--when NONE of them does so. He also says that most of the Peak Oil authors work for the oil companies or for oil-producing countries. How about some examples? I know just about every significant Peak Oil author (except Hubbert, who is deceased) and I can only think of one out of maybe a dozen who fits Learsy's description--which, if it were accurate, might lead the reader to think that Peak Oil authors have ulterior motives. These are just two examples out of many. It is really frustrating to see what should be a scientific discussion brought down to the equivalent of name-calling--evidently because the author has no actual evidence with which to argue his case. Now to the author's primary assertion: that OPEC is gouging the world by imposing high oil prices. In fact, for most of its history OPEC has bent over backwards to supply oil at prices agreeable to Washington. The Saudis even let go of billions in potential earnings in the 1980s in order to flood the world with cheap crude so as to help bankrupt the USSR (it worked)--all to cozy up to George H. W. Bush and friends. Yes, OPEC countries could be spending more on production capacity, but the real reason for high oil prices today is that 33 out of 48 producin...

Start to Finish Guide to SMS Software Delivery

1 stars (This book is for SMS 2.0) - I'm very dissappointed this book this book is not clearly listed as an SMS 2.0 book. Had I known it was for version 2.0 I would not have purchased it. I needed a book to help me with SMS 2003 patch deployment and this book has nothing in it to help me. It has only 19 pages which talk about SMS 2003 in a chapter called "Things to Come". 5 stars (Awesome book!) - Microsoft Systems Managment Server is a huge product. This book takes the software distribution mechanism and breaks it down into manageable chunks so that anyone can become a software distribution expert. With the need to distribute patches to keep the environment secure, this book is extremely timely. Learn how software delivery works, how to build packages, how to distribute packages successfully, and how to troubleshoot. This book can seriously take your distribution percentages through the roof. 5 stars (Awesome book!) - Who would have thought that software delivery for Microsoft SMS would take up an entire book! This book goes into some serious detail about every aspect of the software delivery process -- from creating packages and generating advertisements, to choosing repackaging technologies, to troubleshooting the entire process. No stone is left unturned. If you need to raise your software delivery success levels, this is how to do it. ...

The Business of Software- What Every Manager- Programmer- and Entrepreneur Must Know to Thrive and S

5 stars (Truly the book that every software entrepreneur should read) - In many ways this is the book I had been trying to find for years. There are many good books on starting up companies, and high-tech companies in particular but not much good literature specifically about the software industry as a whole. This books focuses on software as a business and how the industry really works. I am managing a start-up software business and the information in this book is invaluable as it really changed my thinking about what the company is, how it operates, and what it takes to become a success. If you come from a technical background, and starting or thinking of starting a business, then this book is a must-read. 5 stars (A Great Read) - This review is also available on my blog: DLS Thoughts . I just finished reading "The Business of Software" from Michael Cusumano. Overall a well written book on the fundamentals of the software industry. The book focuses essentially on the analysis of the business model for a software company. There isn't really anything striking new in Cusumano's analysis of software companies' business model, but the author does a good job in outlining the choices offered to software companies and how their business model will have to mature as companies and technologies mature. Essentially, there are 3 choices for a software company: * A pure product play (Some would argue that with the advance of open source and the broad adoption that it has been getting lately, that pure plays are getting much more difficult). * A mix of products and services. * A pure service play. I found very interesting Cusumano's analysis of a typical enterprise software company revenue over the course of a five year business lifecycle. For every 1 dollar of product license fees, $2.15 dollars can be derived from services and maintenance. That's more than 70% of the cumulated company revenue. In many cases, services on sold products end up being a life insurance aga...

The Start To Finish Guide to Scripting with KiXtart

5 stars (A book to remember) - As a seasoned user of KiXtart, I was skeptical of purchasing a new book, but once I received the book and read through it, I was glad I did. All the entries and samples were clear, concise and very easy to read and implement. I'd recommend this book for both newcomers trying to learn the language, and oldtimers who think they know the language. 5 stars (First of its kind!) - Can you believe a book on the famous KiXtart scripting language is finally available?!!!! I've waited for something like this for years and its now finally available. But, its not like any first-run book. This book is complete. Even if you've used KiXtart for a long time, you'll learn something from this book. Its extremely easy to understand and covers everything! ...

Driven- Inside BMW- the Most Admired Car Company in the World

2 stars (Nice history, boring read,) - As an auto industry follower, I can appreciate this book as a sort of historical reference for someone perhaps doing research. But as enjoyable reading, it falls far short. The book goes into a painfully detailed history of company events. In fact, I felt the title was a bit misleading, since it made me expect some interpretation as to why BMW is as admired as it is. Instead you basically get a chronology of events. 1 stars (Poor workmanship and limited insights) - Despite his years of experience as an auto journalist, Kiley is a sloppy writer, doesn't seem to have a clue about the mechanics and history of automobiles, and provides little in the way of new insights into what has made BMW successful. To give one example, he asserts that in the late 1960s BMW was unique in offering a wide range of engines in its cars and boosting the power of said engines almost yearly. In fact, both were standard Detroit practices at the time. This error is a byproduct of Kiley's urge to gush about everything BMW has ever done. Apparently the company's inarguable achievements are not enough--he must create additional "firsts" for it. To give another, I'll quote Kiley from page 12: "The higher the horsepower and the lighter the vehicle, the easier it is for engineers to achieve better low-end torque (power at low revolutions of the engine)." Sorry, but the weight of the vehicle has absolutely nothing to do with the torque curve of the engine. In addition, high horsepower usually comes at the expense of low-end torque because of inherent tradeoffs in engine intake system design. More troubling, all of the material is not Kiley's own. One poorly written section on Active Steering (a recent technical innovation that Kiley inaccurately credits entirely to BMW) left me wondering whether my own understanding of the system was incomplete (it was). So I Googled "steering transmission ratio" and found Kiley's words verbatim on a website that predates...

Start to Finish Guide to IT Project Management

5 stars (An Excellent Guide!) - I am an old pro at project management who purchased this book to brush up my knowledge after a few years out of the IT PM game. The author is thorough and his tips are sound. This is probably not the best idea for a PM neophyte but if you are looking to improve your skills or dust off a few brain cells before taking on a big new project, I whole-heartedly recommend this book...a great read! 2 stars (Just OK) - I found this reference to be very thin on practical, useful advice. I've paid less for better. 5 stars ("THE" How to book for managing IT projects. Including Gov't) - This is the "how to" book for managing IT projects. As a project manager for a Big 5 system integrator working with the Government, this book is a must read. It helped to bring calamity to my day-to-day. This book helped to put an end to many sleepless nights. Jeremy has obviously put much thought into easily presenting this material to benefit the novice and the expert Project Manager a like. It's a small price to pay for a good night's sleep. ...
