A Hidden Wholeness - The Journey Toward an Undivided Life

5 stars (A book for everyman) - By everyman I mean, of course, men and women, young and old, retired and working, republicans and democrats, believers and non-believers. This is a book I wish I'd found years ago (before it was written)! Almost everyone lives the divided life. (I suspect the Dalai Lama does not). As Palmer notes, sometimes we have to -- this is a choice we sometimes must choose to make. One of the reasons I love this book so is that Palmer does not have rigid judgmental expectations of us (we probably are harsh enough on ourselves). He offers guidelines and explanations for the human condition, and some help on getting through. Parker Palmer takes a long time Quaker practice -- the Clearness Committee - and uses it to provide for everyone a Circle of Trust. This mutual support network is unusual -- it isn't an advisory committee but more support for listening to that inner voice which we may joke about, but which exists (you know, the one you should have listened to, that nagging feeling, that annoying little warning sign). One thing that makes us crazy is the denial of that inner voice, our true self, the divided side of self that knows the questionable aspects of our work life, the one we hush up so we can get by and make a living. This isn't just a teacher's issue or a spiritual issue. For some it may be a spiritual divide; for others, a more humanistic one. In any case, we become emotionally, mentally and otherwise unbalanced if our day to day movements and choices feel separate from -- or in conflict with -- our beliefs and values, and yet we deny that they are so. We do not allow ourselves to hear that inner voice, afraid of the changes we might have to make. We smush it down, despite knowing intellectually that anything you smush down in one area pops up in another. Freakonomics- A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything

4 stars (Entertaining and a bit educational) - I enjoyed reading this; I'm not sure I believe all of it. There was no methodology presented, so I have to take the author's word that he did the research. And, isn't that what this book is about, NOT taking somebody's word that a presented fact is the absolute truth? The information is interesting, but I found the underlying message, that what we accept as the truth isn't always that simple or easy, far more intriguing and frightening. Take the theories with a grain of salt, and enjoy the imaginative, accessible view of economics. Who knew economics could be fun? 5 stars (Too long, too short - the critics need a unifying theme) - First, let me start off by explaining that my exposure to this material was via a CD Audio book that I checked out at the library. The book is read aloud by Stephen Dubner (one of the authors) and he does a fine job of reading it. Plus, since he knows exactly where to put the inflection in his voice, some of the subtle wordplay becomes more apparent as you hear him speak it. I think that may have also given me a better understanding of the points the authors were trying to make - points that many of the critics of this book have either missed or misunderstood. I have a stack of books next to my bed that I read every evening. This audio version allowed me to complete another book during otherwise wasted time on my commute to and from work. One of the best reasons to listen to the audio version comes in the last chapter where they are discussing names. It is certainly more difficult to keep track of the various lists of names without having them written down in front of you, but you do get the advantage hearing the pronunciation of a few of them. Three of the names are rather amusing to hear aloud especially compared to their spelling. 5 stars (So Obvious, So Difficult, and Yet So Essential) - Perhaps you have already read one or both of Daniel Goleman's previous books, Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ for Character, Health, and Lifelong Achievement (1995) and Working with Emotional Intelligence (1998). If not, I presume to suggest that you do so before reading this volume in which Goleman, Richard Boyatzis, and Annie McKee develop in much greater depth and with much wider application many of the same core concepts introduced in those earlier works. In fact, as the authors explain in the Preface, this book goes far beyond two articles which appeared even earlier in the Harvard Business Review ("What Makes a Leader" and "Leadership That Gets Results") "to advance a new concept: primal leadership. The fundamental task, we argue, is to prime good feelings in those they lead. That occurs when a leader creates [italics] resonance -- a reservoir of positivity that frees the best in people. At its root, then, the primal job of leadership is emotional." Goleman, Boyatzis, and McKee carefully organize their material within Three Parts: The Power of Emotional Intelligence, Making Leaders, and Building Emotional Intelligent Organizations. Power vs Force- The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior

4 stars (Consciousness Raising) - I have purchased Dr. Hawkins' complete trilogy, this being the first. I am almost done with it. It has verified what I have always felt, that we are all connected. I love that the body "knows" the truth even when the mind doesn't! This proves it scientifically. I was treated by a physician using kinesiology many years ago. It was a pleasant surprise to see the far reaching uses that it can be used for. Wonderful. I cannot wait to read the next 2 in the series. 5 stars (Outstanding.) - I came to reading this book in a most peculiar way. I bought a book for my daughter's 10th birthday titled "Why Some Cats Are Rascals". I did it because of the appealing cover, but my daughter was so impressed with the story that I had to read it too. I also liked it and I went to Amazon to write my review to encourage every responsible mother to buy it too. Why reading other reviews of the book I learned that the author of this children's story was inspired by "Power vs. Force". This made me by THIS book. -- I am so glad I did it. It is the best book of this kind I have ever read. Very enlightening and... POWERFUL. No wonder it can inspire other authors.
