Getting Things Done- The Art of Stress-Free Productivity

5 stars (still using method over 1 year later) - This is a perfect personal organitional method. It is so simple it could have been described in 1 chapter. But its good to be convinced of the pitfalls of disorder and the stress it produces. There are a few parts I haven't put in place yet. I am a teacher and I was totally overwhelmed with paperwork and seemingly endless amount of things I needed to do to prepare lessons, teach these 7th graders all day, grade, keep records, reports, deal with the ridiculous amount of paperwork they are constantly piling on top of you: memos, curriculum, behavior plans, tardy forms, referrals, progress reports, IEPs, IAPs, calendars, schedules, personelle forms, insurance, sign this, fill out this, parent call logs, and on and on and on and on you get the picture. etc etc etc for a new teacher it was quite overwhelming plus i was dog tired after teaching all day! I went to office depot after school one day and saw this book and got it on a whim. The INBOX, the one filing system, the trash it, act on it or defer it. These SAVED MY SANITY. It is amazing what an organized life with no loose ends can do for you mentally and physically. The philosphy and application of Allen provides are priceless priceless PRICELESS and its not complicated!!! 5 stars (Most effective getting-organized book I've ever read) - This book takes an entirely different tack from most other getting-organized books. Other authors advocate figuring out the big picture first ... but most of us are so busy with daily fires that the luxury of high-level goals seems beyond our grasp. With his bottom-up approach, David Allen starts you off you a few simple ways to get a handle on your everyday tasks -- so that you can free up enough mental space to even start to think about your long-term goals. Getting to Yes- Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In

4 stars (A Classic that has been superceded.) - Getting to Yes started a revolution in negotiation, both by stressing principled negotiation and in making the material accessible to a very wide audience. It is still a good read, is still taught in universities and continuing education, and is an excellent starting point for people who are new to negotiation but intend a deep study because of its historical significance and its content. However, having taught Getting to Yes and having used principled bargaining in practice, I think there are a few shortcomings that are dealt with in other books. While Fischer and Ury do make the point that principled bargaining includes sticking to your priciples and not being a pushover, it is not emphasized enough. I have even found myself being too cooperative after reviewing this text because the emphasis is on being cooperative. I think this is a partcular danger for new/lay negotiators, especially if this is the first text they're exposed to or they intend to practice these concepts in daily life. The tone of the book is just a bit too friendly. As a result, there has been a backlash (wrongly, in my opinion) against this text in some quarters. The verbal judo section at the end is excellent, giving techniques for dealing with unreasonable people that are great. I would've liked more of these very practical tips and examples to go along with them, but the book as a whole is already a lot to digest. Newer versions of GTY do add more material here. Newer texts take these problems into account. The best, in my opinion, is the follow-on by Ury, "Getting Past No." It can be read without having read "Getting to Yes," although it is very interesting as a follow-on, too. 5 stars (Classic Genius) - This is one of the books that every adult should read. I found several stories in the book which seemed like they were right out of my own life situations -- and you probably will too. It is very universal and will help you. 1 stars (Attention Sister Venuvians: We Must Punish This John Gray By Forever Denying Him Sex!!!) - The most sexist, biased, silly, unfounded, unhelpful waste of time to come from a publishing house in many a moon. This supposed relationship enhancer is the biggest example of playing with a loaded gun since the serpent in the Garden of Eden offered marriage advice to Eve. I know this is now a cult hit but I wonder how many relationships this exercise in stereotyping has busted up? Gray would have us accept that humans are without variation walking examples of either Martians or Venuvians. JMJ, but who on earth falls for this hogswallow? Apparently a lot of people by the sales numbers. Gray would like to make us think all men are confrontation-seeking warriors who reason at waist level. (Actually only half of that statement is true.) He makes a case that men dwell on this plane to spread their DNA, make quick, simple decisions and scratch themselves in public. Women, the less than sage Gray wants it know, are emotion-driven machines turned on and off by nesting instincts, the desire for endless communication and a snuggly need for flattery and security. We are supreme manipulators employing sex as the coin of the realm in the marketplace of romance. This book has all the depth of a three-panel Sunday comic strip. Unfortunately rather than going through the talk show circuit and dying a natural death in the 1990's, I saw a new edition of this was out since the one I read for a class. "Updated!" it proclaimed. What, Gray's going to admit we've evolved a little and are now in the stone age instead of the protoplasmic mating pool he seemed to think we all lived in when he first tossed this inflammatory little cartoon ...

Getting to Maybe- How to Excel on Law School Exams

5 stars (Icing on the cake) - This is an entertaining book with good insights on taking law school exams (I particularly liked Fischl & Paul's hilarious debunking of that stupid old IRAC bromide that professors like to give to all those foolish 1Ls). But some Amazon reviewers seem to think that Getting To Maybe is some sort of magic cure-all. It ain't. Unless you have spent a year or two perfecting your writing and analytical skills through continual practice, merely perusing this book will do nothing for you come exam time. If, however, you are already well versed in basic lawyerly analysis, this book will give you an edge. Here's what you need to do in order to score well on a law exam: 1. Extricate the key facts from a fact-dense problem. (Watch out for red herrings!) 2. Spot and specify all legal issues that arise from these key facts. 3. Intelligently apply all applicable legal rules to the issues. 4. Interweave key facts into elements of the applicable rules. 5. Insert appropriate policy discussions that support the rules. (Take notes and study up on each prof's particular hobby horse and demonstrate extensive familiarity with it on your essay exams.) 6. Integrate ALL of the above skills with succinct, first-draft legal writing skills within the allotted time (usually about 50 minutes per problem). Think fast, write fast--and do both well. Getting To Maybe is particularly good at developing point number 5. It is somewhat spotty at most of the others. But what it does, it does very well indeed. And, as far as law-related books go, it's a fun and funny read. So, after you have mastered the basics of black-letter law and learned to think clearly and write well, what this book has to teach you will be yet another arrow in your quiver. Just don't think it's your entire arsenal. How to Become a Great Boss- The Rules for Getting and Keeping the Best Employees

1 stars (If you want to become a great boss, don't read this) - Fox uniquely attempts to give suggestions on how to keep the best employees. Fox divides his book into fifty short stories that sometimes include a real life situation. Many of his anecdotes have serious flaws in the basic principles of Organizational Behavior, while others do not fully explain how to handle potential problems. There are instances where his suggestions can be very useful in becoming a good manager. At other times, his stories have good concepts, but do have loopholes. If you were interested in only seeing a small picture of the steps to becoming a great manager, then I would recommend this book to you. Fo'xs numerous weaknesses on motivation make me believe that he does not understand some of the basic concepts of motivation. Furthermore, his continual discussion of avoiding mishires, without any description on how to do that, further weakens his arguments. I believe this book is for more experienced managers and educated employees who know to extrapolate the good ideas in the book, and ignore the bad. 2 stars (Very General ) - These are the basics... Some mangers probably need this but I would like to think that most are beyond this kind of general and obvious information. 4 stars (Open Says Me) - This book is an extraordinary manual for emergency entry procedures. The directions are clear and concise, and the numerous illustrations are very helpful. This book can teach you how to bypass a lock with a bottle of bleach -- who knew ?? 5 stars (Far from easy ....) - I had been trying to open an old S&L moneybox for some time - the lock mechanism is "simple" per this book. Curiosity can be frustrating. I didn't want to spend any money on tools for a one off project (I ended up doing this and bought another book). The intellectual satisfaction was worth it. I'm interested in antiques so may get some payback for learning in the future. (I can now also open simple padlocks, and furniture locks, with an improvised tool in fairly quick time.) The information on getting into a locked car is easy to follow; I knew some of this before buying the book but the process will be easier in future. The stuff on handcuffs also appears straightforward - if you use them for business or pleasure - I don't - this could be worth reading. This is a practical book but hard work and requires practice. Worth reading if you have a real interest in locks and will practice. 1 stars (What a rip-off ! Utter Waste of Time.) - Utterly worthless time waster, completely without merit. I read the book and expected more than a small handfull of quotes with page numbers. Nothing more than an infantile cut and past that is at best incomplete ... I'm dead serious when I say my middle school daughter would have done a better job. If you read the table of contents of Execution, you will have more information than this leaflet provides. The leaflet asks such provocative questions as 'explain examples given in the book.' There is nothing new I can use here. I hate time wasters, and I hope that by adding my review I can save you some of your valuable time. 1 stars (Misleading waste) - The above item was ordered and upon review it is clearly worthless and without merit. 1 stars (Don't Believe it Ladies! From a real man) - Men don't commit for several reasons, little of which is stated by the good Doctor. 1. Yes, men are afraid to commit because there is much to lose and little to gain in this "feel good" society for a man to get married. Many women only commit to relationships today if THEY are the able to reap the benefits whether emotional, financial, security etc. from the relationship while for men it is a lifelong journey. Fact: Many more women leave men and divorce them than men leave the woman for the very same reasons as stated above. Contrary to the Hollwood myth, most divorce is filed by the woman, near 70%. 2. It is this very self centered attitude that makes many men wonder "Does she really love me for me" and "Why would I make a commitment because if we divorce I lose everything". So, ladies the Doctor is right about some things but wrong in many others. If you really love your man, tell him and show him. 4 stars (Clear, to the point, relevant examples) - This was a great book on how to integrate the mentality of how to execute into the culture of an organization. It makes it very easy to compare your organization to what is ideal, see how you can change and highlight areas of improvement. Over all a great buy.
