The Girlfriends- Guide to Pregnancy

5 stars (Hilarious!!! at last a book talking about you and not the baby) - Recommend it for everyone! my husband liked it a lot too. I wish the first chapter of the girlsfriend guide to the first year was in this book instead. BUy Both and read them before the baby is born. I got hit by a postpartum blues stage that did not let me read through the other book until I had passed that stage... should I had had the other book or read the first chapter....I might have been a little less concerned about feeling like an alien had possesed me.... 5 stars (Funny Pregnancy Read) - This is an awesome book that every first time mom should read. It isn't as scary, wordy, and technical as "What to expect when your expecting". I used the girlfriend's guide as a secondary book to that one. It is very good for a few laughs and not so good on the technical information but that is what the other book is for. 1 stars (I truly couldn't stand this) - Yes I know she is trying to be funny, and sarcastic, but it mostly comes off as mean and whiney. I wanted a light read, not this condescending instructional book which really isn't any more informative than any other pregnancy guide I've picked up. In my opinion, its NEVER A good idea to tell your husband "and that's the child you didn't want!" after a baby he was less than enthused about is born and makes him smile. Can we say marriage counseling? And I don't think pregnancy gives you an excuse to treat everyone around you badly. And please don't tell a pregnant woman that your friends, who love you and are trying to support you, are outright lying when they tell you how good you look and how little your body has changed. You probably NEED that type of encouragement from friends, and hearing that your friends MUST be lying is just destructive. I couldn't even get through this one, I think this book seriously needs a rewrite and the author, a clue that you don't need to be mean to be funny. ...

Lamb - The Gospel According to Biff- Christ-s Childhood Pal

5 stars (funny and intelligent- it hurts!!) - This is one of the funnier books I have read in a long time. My family kept coming in the room to see what I was laughing at. Someone gave me this book when I was really ill and the laughter was sorely needed. It served it's purpose. Even to the religious, I imagine it would be hard not to laugh. If you can't laugh at yourself... especially when someone is so intelligently poking fun at you? Then it's just a shame- because this book is too funny to be missed... it has been circulated through my family and friends and everyone has had a good laugh! 5 stars (Biff is THE MAN) - I laughed out loud until it hurt - and it felt great. I would never have left xtianity if the followers I encountered were full of the good humor Biff displays. For all of the laughs, there are also insights to be gainned here as to how to answer the obnoxiouly overused question of WWJD? 4 stars (Laugh out loud, wet your pants funny!!) - If you want to read a book that will make you laugh until you cry, read 'Lamb'. This the book that will make you laugh so hard, that others around you will think your crazy. The subject matter is irreverant, but meant in fun. I really don't think anyone would be offended. How to Win Friends - Influence People

5 stars (Read and win.) - Just a joy to read, this book is truly a classic. With its timeless stories, the author illustrates the principles of getting along with others. A book that should be required reading for all human beings, I highly recommend it to one and all. Other self-help books I liked include "The No-Beach, No-Zone, No-Nonsense Weight Loss Plan, A Pocket Guide To What Works." 5 stars (An amazing book) - Dale Carnegie wrote a fantastic book. He writes about success principles that he and others have used to become leaders and build cooperative relationships. I can tell a differece in how people respond to me since trying to use these principles. People smile back and are much friendlier. One reason I think this book is so successful is because the concepts are very simple. For the most part, all of his principles can be found under, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." If one tries to understand how their actions are going to make others feel before they act, they have gone a long way to winning friends and influencing people. Another thing that I like about Carnegie's book is that it is all based on sincerity. All of the advice he gives provide win/win situations. Nobody loses; he does not try to manipulate or deceive people. I believe Carnegie had an honest interest in people and wanted everyone to acheive to their highest ability. The principles in this book helps one help others as well as help oneself. Truly a fantastic book. 5 stars (How to Win Friends & Influence People ) - Great for a long drive, reminds all of us how we should act. While the examples feature dated individuals, the lessons are contemporary. ...

5 stars (WHAT IF CHRISTIANITY IS THE MOST DANGEROUS THING TO CHRIST??? ) - Christianity Today called A NEW KIND OF CHRISTIAN the most dangerous book this year to Christianity. This may be true, but what if Christianity is the most dangerous thing to Christ??? McLaren's book points toward a real and honest relationship with Christ like no other book I've read. It is culturally relevant without contradicting the Word of God. It IS challenging, but that is a good thing. It is a GOOD thing when someone makes you think outside the box. You don't have to be threatened by that or agree with what they said. Many of the reviews I've read about this book communicate fear, but NOTHING that McLaren said contradicted Christ's life and teachings. If we look at Christ, we will see that it was the RELIGIOUS PEOPLE he was constantly rebuking during his ministry. RELIGION is one of the most threatening things to Christ. McLaren encourages his readers to look to scripture and try looking past the self-serving institution we have created and given the name of "church". "Church" is not supposed to be the country club we've created it to be but a body of believers, seeking Christ. Read the book and genuinely ask Christ to help you discern McLaren's words. If it is not of God, He will give you the wisdom and protection from that. 5 stars (Thought provoking and honest...) - This is a great beginner read to bring in new ideas and theology that will help people who are struggling with how their faith is not only relevant, but also authentic and Christian in the postmodern world. 4 stars (Match Point (4.5 Stars)) - This is a well-written account of women's tennis between the years of 1971 and 1987 as told through the stories of Martina and Chrissie (no last names needed!). In those years, there really weren't any other women stars with staying power, and these two women were the face of the sport. The contrast in their childhood upbringings and off-court relationships and training practices are covered well and thankfully not in laborious detail. I would have liked to hear more from Tracy Austin, Hana Mandlikova, and other players to help balance the Martina/Chrissie rememberances, but other than that, this book is very good. 5 stars (Aces, straight sets, a winner) - For those of us old enough to remember the growth of tennis, particularly women's tennis, in the early 70's through 80's, this is an insider's walk down memory lane. Well researched, well written, and sensitive, it tells the inside story of what (and who) made the two title women tick, but also provides the necessary background for what was going on around them. Fans of women's sports,heck, sports in general, but particularly tennis, will enjoy this read. 5 stars (Best sports book I've ever read) - I thought I knew so much about Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova until I read Johnette Howard's extraordinary book. From start to finish, I couldn't put it down. The narrative is so compelling. It's not so much a biography as a wonderful story that unfolds page after page. The book is full of anecdotes that stay with you, and Howard draws detailed, insightful, often poignant portraits of Martina and Chris that go far beyond anything I've ever read about them before. Most importantly, to me, Howard excelled at putting Chrissie and Martina's rivalry in human terms. And she provides the sort of historical context that makes this not just a sports book, but a book that reads like a short cultural history of the time that Martina and Chris came along.
