Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 5 10th Anniversary Edition

5 stars (Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.5 review) - This is a very simple program to use & has many nice features. I'm mainly using it to make picture videos & it does a good job at it. 4 stars (One of the better consumer Video Editing/DVD Authoring solutions) - I am suprised to see so many people trash this suite so quickly. I never use it for burning CDs/DVDs/Audio player (Nero, Winamp anyone?), but a combination of Roxio Capture, Videowave Professional and DVD Builder is really good for camcorder DV->DVD video editing and conversion. Features include support for still images, videos of differing resolutions/specs, video effects, overlays, text overlays, etc. you name it. Pinnacle Studio 9 is still a notch better in terms of features (the only feature that this suite doesn't seem to have - manipulation of audio volume of video tracks in the timeline), but its wickedly unstable and gets my Oscar for the most crash friendly program. Call it my uncanny luck, but Studio used to corrupt my projects just after I spend hours editing the video and done with it making me start all over again. I was looking for a stable alternative and this suite has saved my day. 1 stars (Extremely Unstable Program) - After spending 6 weeks capturing and editing a video, which the program did well, the burning process is extremely unstable. It will burn the video to a DVD-RW (rewrightable) disk but not to a non rewritable disk. I have tried 4 different manufacturers DVD disk and after 2 1/2 hours it takes to burn, I get error messages on every one and the disks will not play. I have wasted time and disks (they are unusable after the burning) to get no results. I have spent hours with Roxio's direct email support and with phone support and get "this is most unusual" but no solutions. I have deleted and reinstalled the program 3 times, as suggested by tech support, and still get the same results. I have sent for a back up disk as support also suggested that the original disk may be faulty....

The Tipping Point- How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference

1 stars (Please - Stop Him Before He Writes Another Book!) - This is the second Gladwell book I've read, and unfortunately its as bad as the first (Blink!). His basic point is that little things can make a big difference. Gladwell's problem, however, is that he doesn't know what he's writing about, and it's a fatal flaw. For example, early in this book he relates how a "small change" in Brooklyn policing strategies turned into a "large drop" in crime. In reality, "broken windows," accompanied by much more data-driven and administrative follow-up policing referred to by Gladwell was a large (not small change). The reality is that "broken windows" policing ended up going far beyond simply pursuing those with minor violations (eg. fare-beating) to include studying crime patterns (location, timing, etc.), setting improvement goals, and regular high-level follow-up. Secondly, "Freakonomics" research concluded that the crime-rate decline began BEFORE the change in policing, and that much of the decline was due to increased staffing. Gladwell also attributed the decline to improved economic conditions - however, no such decline accompanied prior economic good times. Finally, Gladwell offered no explanation of why similar steep declines in crime occurred across the U.S. at the same time - without regard to any change in policing! Another of Gladwell's problems is that he doesn't seem to understand anything about statistics. The fact that a change in policing suposedly occurred at the same time as a decline in crime rates seems to be "proof" of causation for Gladwell. One of the first lessons in statistics, however, is that "correlation does not imply causation." Summarizing, the book starts out poorly, and goes downhill from there - increasingly boring, confusing, and totally lacking in credibility.
