The Gift of Fear

5 stars (Routinely Recomend) - I have recommended this book many times. Knowledge is power and comfort. There is no hysteria created by reading this book as some reviewer who have not even read the book purport. Of course I already "knew" about many of Mr. De Becker's principles, as we all should. Its just important to be reminded or should I say "hit up side the head" with them. His examples do just that. I read the book 2 years ago when my husband hired Mr. De Becker's firm to work on a safe room for a client and YES... I have retained all the information. Imagine that. I just recommended the book to my son's girlfriend who is off to college and will keep recommending it. 4 stars (Part of the Story, But With Some Flaws) - This book does a very good job of helping people recognize behaviors and actions that may lead to trouble. Unfortunately, this book has some flaws and certainly could have been better. Mr. De Becker is clearly an expert at teaching about manipulation, grooming, and other patterns of behavior that often precede violence. He does a great service in explaining techniques used by antisocials and ways to counteract them by following our instincts. On the down side, the book contains a lot of anti-gun propaganda. The author tends to make unsubstantiated claims about how having a gun makes one less safe. He uses a couple of examples while ignoring the hundreds of cases annually where individuals with weapons have saved their own lives or those of others. Additionally, he tends to do a lot of self promotion for his company and name dropping of the ultra leftist elites of Hollywood. Although it may impress some readers that he has connections with Rosie O'Donnell and Barbara Streisand, it certainly does nothing to enhance his credibility. On the contrary, it makes him appear to be a liberal with an agenda. In this case, that is making people less self reliant for their own protection while promoting his company. That is unfortunate as it takes...

A Field Guide to American Houses

5 stars (Great Photographs-Line Drawings Weak) - At 525 pages, Virginia and Lee McAlester's " A Field Guide to American Houses " is an exhaustive study of the different styles of American domestic architecture. They identify and categorize 39 different architectural styles. This is much more than most field guides. I have been collecting architectural field guides for a number of years. The only thing I do not like in this well prepared book is the over-reliance on black and white photos of homes. The quality of the photos vary significantly. The photos are not of the same high caliber as the photos taken for Historic American Building Survey.(HABS) I believe the best field guides are made up line drawings. Line drawings get to the point and the different archiectural features can be labled. The best line drawings really help in clarifying stylistic points. Photos can be distracting because trees, power lines and vehicles end up in many of the photos. There are line drawings in this book at the beginning of each section. Unfortunately, the line drawings are the weakest part of the book. This is a great book and you cannot go wrong with purchasing it. However, as a devotee of these types of books, I would recommend purchasing Lester Walker's "American Shelter". His illustrations are really beautiful and very informative. 5 stars (Great Book for Preservationists!) - This book has helped me through school! Its a great book to have in your collection if you study preservation or interested in architecture! 5 stars (Invaluable Reference) - You will truly value this book if you are interested in the styles of residential architecture in America. After an engaging survey in the introduction, the styles and movements are presented in chronological order. Also included at this point are outline drawings of the various types of houses, illustrating style, basic shapes, elevations, plans, types of materials and building techniques used as well as a pictori...

Arcadian Architecture - Bohlin Cywinski Jackson-12 Houses

5 stars (A book of equal quality to the firm's body of work.) - I won't bore you with what an excellent firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson is, their 250 architectural design awards are evidence of the quality of the body of their work. I instead would like to review the quality of this publication. In over thirty years of architectural practice and school I don't know if I have seen a better constructed book. The contributions by Peter Bohlin and James Cutler as well as the introduction by Thomas Fisher frame the twelve houses is such a way as to clear understanding of the design and construction process that make these projects worth serious study. It is seldom that I open a book for the first time and fell such "WOW" at the quality of its content and construction of the book. It is a work of art in my opinion. Oscar Riera Ojeda has done an excellent job as editor of this work. 5 stars (Where does the richest man in the world hang his hat?) - Question: Where doe the richest man in the world hang his hat? Answer: In a house built by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. In a new monograph from Rizzoli, Arcadian Architecture focuses on 12 private commissions built by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. As the title suggests Arcadian Architecture showcases homes that have a rustic or peaceful feeling, heightened by harmonious blending into their surroundings. The houses have a warm earthy minimal style inside and outside, created from wood, concrete, rock and stone. They look as if they grew in the landscape rather than being built there. Each of the 12 houses is presented in great detail, the captions, elevation drawings, sketches, and photos provide the reader with a personal tour of each property. One of the featured projects in Arcadian Architecture is, " A Pacific Rim Estate", is a residential compound near Seattle perched on a steep site, leading down to the edge of Lake Washington. Arcadian Architecture does not advertise this as Bill Gates' house in the table of contents; this is ind...

Architectural Graphic Standards for Residential Construction Ramsey-Sleeper Architectural Graphic S

1 stars (Readers' Digest Version of AGS) - Although these editions change little, this review is based upon AGS 10th Ed. & AGSRC 2003. Negative: This is bascially a regurgitation of the more complete Architectural Graphics Standards, distilled to a "residential" focus but appears as volumous because some details have been photo-enlarged (in poor-average quality). Few, if any new residential details/information has been provided. Positive: Those ONLY interested in residential construction and NOT requiring a full brace of ALL details will find this quite a good value - compare its price to Architectural Graphics Standards. Recommendation: Anyone in construction should have one, but not both of these books as a prime resource. The content does improve every year, although some years it's like watching grass grow. Challenge: IF there are numerous portions of the Residential version that are unique and new to it, exclusive of passages in the larger AGS version - I would really appreciate a review that contains how to locate these passages, as I've spent enough time trying to find them. If enough of these exist, it would give thought of updating this resource once in awhile. 3 stars (One volume encyclopedia) - Experienced readers will benefit from its brief summaries and drawings covering the broadest range of topics imaginable. Some economizing is evident in the paper and printing quality, some of the drawings look 50 years old, but there is lots of reference information, like span tables, solar position data, etc. Probably not the last word on every topic, but still worth consulting. 5 stars (A wonderful resource) - Following in the terrific legacy of the benchmark Architectural Graphic Standards book, this edition clearly makes building for residences an easier task. I've found innumerable details that I've used in my residential practice on a daily basis, details not found in other reference books. Of particular help are the pages that give an overview of...

How to Plan- Subcontract and Build Your Dream House- Everything You Need to Know to Avoid the Pitfal

3 stars (Voice of experience--good advice) - The best part of this book is its easygoing style. Written seemingly entirely from memory, you'll understand and remember every word. The author skips the commonly available info and writes about the crucial nuts-and-bolts problems of building a house: what do you do if you've drilled a hundred foot well and come up dry? (Keep drilling.) His advice on some details, vapor barriers for example, is OK but you'll want to check the latest thinking on the topic too. Some harmless misinformation is passed along, like that Palladio, eponym for those short-tall-short windows, "invented" them. (He may have invented residential architecture, but those windows date to antiquity. In his day they were known as serliana, after the architect Sebastian Serliano.) The scientific explanations fall a bit short, and the chapter where he disparages Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's engineering does not show him in a good light. However he does caution you that drywallers, more than any other trade, will try to rip you off with a high materials estimate. Stuff like that you can't get anywhere else. 5 stars (Great first source) - If you want to have a house built, this is a great book to start with. The author is a general contractor who has seen it all and wants to educate readers about the building process. His intention is to prevent others from the pitfalls and scams of building, and simultaneously he explains the science behind plumbing, electricity, sewarage, insulation etc. He also discusses the attitudes and scams of subcontractors and local bureaucrats. This is not a how-to book; the purpose is to educate you enough so that you know what questions to ask as your house goes up. He begins with purchasing the land and ends with the final detailing of the house. He includes interesting anecdotes to make his points. I was impressed his ability to go from the abstract to simple things usually overlooked. Although I was lost in th...

Fiance - Marriage Visas- A Couple-s Guide to U S Immigration- 3rd Edition

5 stars (Excellent in-depth immigration assistance!) - I read this book cover to cover when it arrived in the mail. It was extremely easy to read and understand. I have been working on getting my paperwork turned in to the USCIS since I got married last year. The chapters covered all of the forms that I needed to complete in detail and gave me the confidence to submit them on my own. It is a bit overwhelming when you know that you have to submit all of the documents into the government, and this book is very lengthy, but with it's help, you will be able to navigate through the jargon and commonly made mistakes of the forms and have everything filled out and ready to go. Good luck! 5 stars (This book is AMAZING) - I 100% recommend this book to anyone trying to move or stay in the US through marriage. I am from Canada and married a US citizen and was having a lot of trouble figuring out which paperwork needed to be filed and what sort of documents were needed. This book laid everything out step by step and I never would have been able to file all of the paperwork on my own nor would I have been able to understand all of the jargon. The CD ROM is also very nice because many of the forms let you fill them out on the computer and just print them out. Good luck to anyone going through this process. And just an FYI it is really expensive! 5 stars (Excellent Immigration Resource!!) - My husband (then my fiance) and I used the first edition when we were filling out the paperwork for his K1 fiance visa. I am thrilled to hear that there is a new one! This book was an answer to our prayers - it guided us through all the forms and terminology, gave us helpful tips and pointers, and answered all of our questions. If you are going through marriage-based immigration, you need to get this book! ...

Casa California - Spanish-Style Houses from Santa Barbara to San Clemente

5 stars (Absolutely gorgeous) - I have been a Santa Barbara resident for most of my life and I love seeing our local architecture featured in this book. My wife is an interior designer and frequently references the book. Not only is it suited for design and architecture professionals but also for the layman with and appreciation for design. Sven Klein - Santa Barbara, CA 5 stars (fantastic book for both professionals or coffee table) - Beautiful pictures depict romantic spaces with clear details, they helps me as an architect to re-create the Spanish living environment with many examples from different projects. The 20 houses in this book are gorgeous and inspiring -whether you are looking for ideas or merely relax reading. This is not a book showing only pieces of details for decorator use, it's an awesome architectural book as well as a perfect collection for my coffee table. 5 stars (A MUST!) - One of those books that is just full of great images of the Spanish Revival/Moorish style architecture of So. California. While not heavy on text, this book is a very important visual reference for designers, etc. who want to see how it used to be done. Many photos are of the interiors, but most are of the gardens. If interested in the glazed Malibu tiles seen throughout the book, check out "Ceramic Art of the Malibu Potteries: 1926-1932" by Ronald L. Rindge. ...

Not So Big Solutions for Your Home

5 stars (Very helpful) - I found this book to be very insightful for me as a new homebuilder. While the book is a collection of magazine articles that Susanka has written in the past, they contain ideas that are refreshing and useful. I have a new direction in the way I think about the design of my house, and I can appreciate the value of maximising space, as well as building the house to suit my particular lifestyle. i would recommend this for any potential homebuilder, or renovator. 5 stars (Bigger is not always better...quality counts!) - Our guiding philosophy and inspiration. An engaging and intelligent defense of building (and renovating) smarter, not bigger. Sarah Susanke has made a career of promoting traditional design principles in a way that speaks to modern situations (many of us can't afford new, huge houses) and responds to the "McMansions" craze that continues to sweep the US. She has a wonderful sense of how to maximize space for personal use. She advocates for built-in furniture, design built around daily activities, and open light-filled design. She had us at "Most architects are afraid to say...'You don't need an addition, you need a cleaning service." She doesn't want to clean out your bank account. She wants you to make the most of what you have...and if you follow her ideas, you will. 5 stars (Useful Information from a Pioneering Voice) - Within a very short time, Sarah Susanka has had a profound impact on the way families approach the design of their home. Eschewing the "bigger is better" model that drives the profits of developers and mass production builders, Sarah Susanka has introduced a new vocablary of user-centered design that focuses on the details that make for a pleaant living experience. Her "smaller is better" philosophy is based on often overlooked details like window size, providing built-in spaces for daily activities, creating "comfort zones" by varying ceiling heights and room lighting, and a myriad of other simple-in-...

Prefab

3 stars (so-so) - ok, if you're looking for more of a coffee table book than a serious research source. arieff does provide a brief history of some selected prefabricated ventures, but the other 3/4 of the book is of more modern attempts, all of which are not described or displayed as thoroughly as i had hoped. most of the designs are also of doubtful marketability, and the pompous attitudes of some of the designers is off-putting. some pretty pictures, however. 1 stars (This book stinks!) - Let me make a simple observation, people by these type of books for the pictures. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words right? But flipping through this book gave me the impression that the authors wanted to explain in words rather than with pictures. It was "blah, blah, blah, blah, blah" when a few more photos would have been much better. Why describe with words??? I liked " Prefab Modern" by Jill Herbers better because it has more designs. It actually had many of the same designers in Prefab but with more pictures, less words, and a floor plan which really helps you to conceptualize the designs. Not only that but the book by Jill Herbers is cheaper too... 3 stars (Good intro and overview, but not the whole story) - While this is a beautiful book with some specific details on prefab in the modern age, it left me still wanting more. After reading Dwell ever since its inception, this seemed a bit light and redundant. If you want to own every book on the subject, then by all means purchase it (I would understand: prefab modern is becoming an obsession for me). But I prefer ' Prefab Modern' by Jill Herbers (not all would agree: I noticed that one amazon reviewer recommends this one, Prefab , over the Herbers title). ...

The Not So Big House Collection- The Not So Big House and Creating the Not So Big House

4 stars (Unique Slant) - It's evident Ms Susanka has fashioned a niche for sleek, tasteful and refined living. She seperates style from fashion with a keen eye set for timeless architecture. She stresses quality over quantity in square footage. I was pleased with the quality of these books. 5 stars (These books will NOT save you money.) - It's not about that. If you're looking for information on building a smaller, lower cost home, these books won't help much. In general, the author's message is to spend MORE per square foot, and learning to get more use out of a smaller space. On the other hand, if you like your neighborhood, but feel you need a bigger house, these books may give you some ideas on remodeling (instead of moving) - which could save you a lot of money by not buying a bigger home that you hate just as much as your old one. I think these are fantastic books. Excellent photos and floor plans illustrate each point in a crystal clear fashion. The author starts with a few basic concepts and shows their execution in various ways in different houses. A great tool for anyone planning to buy, build or remodel. In the editions I received, both books have 10" x 10" pages. Excluding the Introductions, Afterward, etc... First book: 187 pages; probably more photos than text; medium-large, easy-to-read print. This covers the basic concepts with dozens of examples. Second book: 250 pages; probably more photos than text; medium print (a bit smaller than the first book, but still easy to read). This book focuses on 25 different homes, highlighting the key features of each. 5 stars (GREAT FOR BUDGET and IDEALISTIC MINDED! yes, both.) - Building a home: GET ALL YOUR DETAILS IN THE CONTRACT PRIOR TO STARTING, (INCLUDING PRICING OUT YOUR ALLOWANCES TO ENSURE THE BUILDER HAS PUT ENOUGH ALLOWANCE IN CONTRACT), MAKE A BUDGET-Detailed, and get these books: These books have been the cornerstone of our building project. True, she has advice that is for both large...

Anatomy of Domestic Animals- Systemic and Regional Approach

5 stars (Excellant animal anatomy book) - This book is excellant for the study of anatomy of all mamals. The pictures were very desciptive and the text helped to explain things alittle. The book doubled as a coloring book if one chose to use it as such to help reinforce where things were located. The only thing I wished it had was information on birds. 5 stars (Better than Dyce) - This a great book that gets right to the point instead of dancing around it like dyce. I highly recommend it to all of my fellow vet students. It will save you tons of time! 4 stars (Everyone wants Pasquini) - I'm a vet student in the Philippines and even though we have anatomy books in the library, i really found it hard to study it. So I guess Pasquini has really simplified the subject, breaking it down into tables and diagrams and simple texts. it even has "clinical" boxes so you can appreciate what you're studying! if you're a first year stude, it'll help you become familiar with a lot of diseases, IM or IV sites, etc. My classmates find the pictures very cute (as w/ many others). I'm restudying it right now to prepare for surgery. it's just been a direct, miracle book. On the other hand, no colored pictures and the systemic approach can bog you down with locating some stuff. and sometimes, i get confused with the diagrams, but that's just me. ...

Mac OS X 10 4 Tiger DVD

5 stars (Sleek Tiger) - The finest OS to date. I was haapy with Paanthere, but Tiger is a steop above. 5 stars (From PC to Mac forever, this OS is amazing.) - I have used Windows for years and used a Mac at my work, I always liked the way the Mac handled graphics and also appreciated their ease of use. Mac OS X is so simple to use compared to Windows XP, it is by far the best OS I have ever used. I have not run into one single glitch, my powerbook has not crashed on me once. It had crashed on me a few times with OS 9, but this one seems to be a lot more stable. I like the dashboard also, you can quickly check the weather, stocks, dictionary or calendar all with a push of a button and built into the OS. You can also download many others for free from the Apple website. Itunes is a great application also and it is something I use all day long. Safari is far more superior in just about every-way compared to Microsoft Explorer, in fact it would take to long to list the benefits. I also liked the ability to run OS 9 in classic mode, so you can keep all your older software and still use them within OS X. If you are sick and tired of the Windows fatal exception errors or sending Windows error reports, then buy yourself an Apple and enjoy stress free living with OS X. 1 stars (Stick with Panther) - I get the spinning beachball and Microsoft Office application crashes about as often as I did in 10.1! I reformatted my hard disk and reinstalled Panther after trying the 10.4.1 and 10.4.2 updates. For my needs Panther (10.3.8+) is a much more robust and stable operating system. ...
