Return of the Prodigal Son

5 stars (Glory!) - I found this book to be one of the best Christian books I have ever read, bar none. I facilitate the Adult Bible Class at my church. I read it in April or May and then we studied it in the class in June and July. I am still reflecting on it after all this time! I cannot describe what I liked about the book. I can only say that Nouwen writes to me where I am. So much of what he said seemed to be written just for me. 5 stars (Mysticism through Art appreciation) - If nothing else, Henri Nouwen takes the reader on a methodology of how to appreciate a painting, in this case Rembrandt's specifically. He takes us on an observation tour which transcends into our very hearts as we realize that there's much more to the painted story than the son; there's the father; the other brother; and other people watching. At some point in time we are all one or a combination of the characters diplayed. Nouwen brushes his words as Rembrandt brushed his oils. A wonderful experience, and a book to keep and reread. 4 stars ("You are called to become the father") - Nouwen skillfully navigates Rembrandt's masterwork and Christ's (arguably) most famous parable. In both he finds "the heart of the gospel": God's unconditional love for the world. The navigation comprises three stages: the story of the prodigal son, the story of the elder brother and finally the challenge to find yourself as the father/mother at the center of the painting. Each stage has its own crises, breakthroughs and ultimate redemption - with the possible exception of the elder brother whose decision to enter the father's love is left ambivalent. Towards the end Nouwen achieves his dynamic spiritual insights, sounding almost Buddhist when he announces, "There is a dreadful emptiness in spiritual fatherhood ... But that same dreadful emptiness is also the place of true freedom." We are ultimately left with a portrait of impoverished fatherhood that is as wise as it is compelling. "Rembrand...

Twelve Ordinary Men

5 stars (Meat on the bones) - This is an excellent treatment of the 12. I used it as a starting point for a series of sermons this summer. It brings the flat apostles into focus, to see the life changing effect that being with Jesus brought into one's life. Highly recommended for both group and individual study. 4 stars (Great Apostle Research) - I really like hearing about the histories of the apostles. Makes them seem much more "real" than the abstract readings from the bible. It's also very well written. The other book in the same vein that I recommend in the genre is Your Apostle Personality (it's also at Amazon) which goes a little further relating our personalities to those of the apostles. 5 stars (From the Ordinary to Extraordinary) - This book was excellent, each apostle's personality was described according to scripture; each one of these personalities amazingly makes up the body of Christ before conversion. Here the evidence is laid out before us as to how God took each one; balanced them; settled them, and made them new creatures in order to go out and preach the gospel. Thank God for the Word in it's purest form. It's encouraging and engaging; It made you feel like you was there with them. You seen them go from glory to glory (except for Judas Iscariot). I have seen churches portray the disciples as a bunch of fools-But not in this book! you see the mire clay and the finished product. Please buy this book - you won't be disappointed. ...

Experiencing the Heart of Jesus - Knowing His Heart- Feeling His Love

5 stars (Best Bible Study So Far) - I've been in the same women's bible study for 5 years now. This is the best study we have ever done. It helped me understand Jesus in a way I never have. I like the "workbook" approach of making you match verses with interpretations. I have learned where the books are in my bible just by looking up so many verses. I feel closer to God than I ever have before, and much of that was the guidance of this book during a difficult time. 1 stars (Experiencing whose heart? ) - Ought to have been titled "Experiencing the ramblings of Max Lucado" or "Experiencing the Dogma of Christianity". The anecdotal stories that lead up to more anecdotal examples were trite. The 1001 blurbs written in the margins from previous books that he has written were trite. His writing style is, I'm guessing, supposed to be fresh, street, or "where you are"; but, it's painful and aggrivating to read. Ah, but you "identify" with his style; I'm not one of them. I find the tone dry, self-indulgent, and the content not living up to the thesis captured in the title or his churchy infomercial that we endured. If you want a book on personal development, read "The Search For Significance" by Robert McGee; if you want a book about the historical Jesus (I mean the real Rabbi from the North), read the forward to the Jewish New Testament by Stern for a start (follow up with James Scott Trimm or Anthony Buzzard, or Bart Ehrmann, or http://religion.rutgers.edu/iho/). So what would've helped? Tell me ABOUT Jesus! Tell me who he is! Why he was here! What his 'deal' was! Why people should listen to him! Differing opinions of him! Why his words might be relevant for today's world! Oh, I almost forgot site your sources! Nonetheless, Nelson publishers have great graphic artists designing beautiful cover art, but that's about all I see when perusing Xp titles anymore. 5 stars (Awesome Study Guide) - This is truly the best book I have ever read. It can be life-changing ...

Blue Like Jazz- Nonreligious Thoughts on Christian Spirituality

5 stars (wonderful!) - This book was wonderful! I would recommend it to anyone, especially those who don't like Christians or for Christians to challenge them to go deeper and find real freedom. It's worth it, whatever the cost. 5 stars (One Man's "Garbage", Another Man's Treasure ) - This is one of those books that brings out the beauty and honesty of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. Don understands that the only way we can survive this world is through community in the body of Christ, and the only way that can happen is through honesty. Miller uses his testimony to tackle some tough issues like freedom and artistic creativity. He also reminds us through expereinces with his 'liberal friends' what Christ looks like when it comes to social action and where many follwers of Christ have been taking naps. "There is no holiness but social holiness". Miller is able to paint a picture of who he is in a way that, when you put down the book, you feel like you just had a conversation with him. This book isn't scripture, it's an autobiography [Which means it's about his personal life experiences :) ]. Donald Miller's testimony is one that has the potential to impact many people. Pick up this book today! 5 stars (Not a 5-step guide to living the Christian life - just one person's perspective on life and Christianity.) - After reading some of the reviews posted, I decided to write one of my own. I'd like people to remember that this book isn't a step by step guide on how to live the Christian life. I don't think Donald Miller's intentions (if I may be so bold) are anything other than getting the reader to think about his or her own flawed thinking about Jesus and Christianity. Some of the reviewers (Garbage comes to mind) ironically fall into that fundamentalist, legalistic category that Miller has written about in his book. I think Miller just wants us to be as honest with ourselves regarding our beliefs and lives and direction, as he has been with hi...

Disciplines of a Godly Man

1 stars (Much too superficial for me. ) - [...] R. Kent Hughes provides us with another entry into the already very crowded market for Christian books that are a mile wide and an inch deep. He covers a tremendous variety of topics in an incredibly superficial fashion. The book reads more like a PowerPoint presentation with occasional witty anecdotes from the presenter. My disappointment with this book set in with the reading of the second chapter entitled "Purity." Now there's a topic that an entire book can be written on, but the author gives us a mere eleven pages, using the famous example of King David and his adulterous relationship with Bathsheba to present us with a five-point sermon on what David did wrong. He begins the chapter with the usual rant about how the church is no different from the world in regards to sexual sin (true enough). He then tells us about what David did wrong, and to conclude we get seven subdisciplines to practice in order to keep pure: "accountability", "prayer", "memorization" (of scripture), "mind" (don't look at pornography), "hedges" (keep away from women), "reality" (you are a sexual being), "divine awareness" (practicing the presence of God). Each of these subdisciplines gets a short explanation, never exceeding 300 words in length, and "reality", the shortest of the seven, is explained in mere 52 words. Brevity can be a wonderful thing, but there are times when it can come off sounding rather superficial. The problem is that all these subdisciplines will not work if a person has emotional and personal issues that need to be overcome first. Any man can partake of these seven practices and still fall into temptation with the greatest of ease, as long as there exists issues in the heart that have never been fully dealt with. Instead of dealing with the deeper issues regarding sexual sin, we get pat answers to apply to a wounded psyche, which is like applying band-aids to someone who is suffering from internal b...

Experiencing God - Knowing and Doing His Will - Workbook

5 stars (a great study book) - we're using this book in our Women's Sunday School class, and it's a great book. Easy to read and understand. 4 stars (Good stuff) - Just started going through this material, and I am really being blessed by it. Given my own theological background, I can't say I agree with all of it (when do you find something you always agree with!), but I really like the overall emphasis: it's not about you, it's about GOD! You can't just fill in the blanks; you've got to think about what they're saying, and apply it to yourself. Then I think the lights will come on, and the Spirit will start pointing you toward a radical God-centeredness. I was studying this book along with the book of Jonah, and the parallels are neat. Anyway, this book is helpful. Good stuff! 5 stars (A Practical Book) - As strongly implied by the subtitle, "How to Live the Full Adventure of Knowing and Doing God's Will," this book is about application. In fact following every few paragraphs there is a section of reflective questions that summarizes the key points and help you to put them into a context for your own life. Blackaby and King describe personal experiences, but subordinate those to the Scripture. Some favorite examples from the Bible are used repeatedly in the various chapters. Model prayers are included at the end of each chapter to assist a person in praying targeted prayers. If a general theme could be drawn out from the book it would be: a relationship to God is more important than any work you do for Him. That's the essence of the book. The authors say as God reveals to you what He is doing, He invites you to join Him in His work. Consequently, listening in prayer is more important that speaking, according to this premise. ...
