Delorme Mapping Street Atlas 2005 for Handhelds

1 stars (ZERO STARS !!!!!!!!) - I use the desktop software and have been content with it. I find STreet Atlas easier to use but INACCURATE and MS Streets and Trips to be MORE accurate but less intuitive. Street Atlas for Handheld is a complete, unfinished, unpolished, inaccurate and VERY unintuitive waste of money! Basically, the reviews previous to mine have said it all. I would recommend Tom Tom Navigator for Handhelds or Microsoft's Streets and Trips for PocketPC. 1 stars (Flush your money down the toilet!) - At least you'll get to see it swirl around before it disappears. Then you can walk away and forget it instead of wasting HOURS AND HOURS in frustration after you've wasted the money. I bought this program because I thought it would be more current on the local streets than my old GPS software that came out in 2003 - WRONG! Less current, and not nearly as user friendly or anything else you want street GPS for. The other reviews do a good job of telling you some of the weaknesses. I just wish I had read them before I bought this trash. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS IF YOU ARE THINKING OF USING IT WITH A HANDHELD DEVICE!!! 1 stars (Worst handheld application ever!) - I've been developing software for over 30 years and have never seen (and spent money on!) a worse piece of commercial software!! It's not even good enough to be called an Alpha version! If the developers ever used this software on a road-trip, I'm sure they're all dead by now since it's so badly designed that it's actually a danger to anyone that uses it! Here are just a few things to hate about this program: 1) Selecting map rectangles in the desktop app is slow and anti-intuitive. 2) The handheld software draws maps very slowely, if at all! 3) None of the controls on the display are intuitive. I tried for hours to figure out how to make the icon that represents the car, stay in the middle and have the map move. Still haven't figured it out!! 4) Trying to route to an address...

DeLorme Street Atlas USA 2006

1 stars (Worst Program Ever) - I never got this thing running. My computer exceeds all of the specs required to work this thing and it crashed and crashed and crashed. Do not purchase this whatever you do. 1 stars (Still no support for non-English version of Windows) - I have used a Street Atlas since 2004. Steet Atlas 2004 & 2005 versions do not support non-English version of Windows. Even if you have a English version of Windows, if your default language setting is not English, some major features of the Street Atlas, such as find, do not work at all. So I must change the language setting to English and reboot the computer to use it. It was a real hassle and I have really wanted this problem to be fixed in 2006 version. However, that problem still remains and you even need to change the language setting just to install Street Atlas 2006 (Installation was fine with different language setting in 2004 and 2005 version). So if your default language setting is not English in Windows, you'd better use Microsoft Steets & Trips. MS Streets & Trips works fine in any language setting and it starts to support a voice prompt feature and turn-by-turn GPS direction guide from the 2006 version. I am really disappointed that Delorme does not care about the non-English users. 4 stars (Delorme Street Maps) - Seems to give the information we need with directions and maps. Still perfecting using it and getting familiar but it seems to be good for our needs. ...

Delorme Earthmate GPS LT-20

3 stars (Works.. Sort of..) - The GPS receiver included works fine but the software is still a work in progress. I have had it tell me to turn left when it should say right, and vice versa. It has routed me off of major highways to put you right back on the same highway a few miles down the road for no reason. It thinks I am on the next street over when I am at my house. It is fun to play with, but I don't think I would leave home without a real map yet.. 4 stars (Low cost mapping and GPS) - This was my first experience with GPS. I recently bought and used it on a business trip from New Jersey to Virginia. Based on that experience, I will always drive with GPS in unfamiliar territory. This software has some great features, including voice. It is easy to get started and use. The routing is excellent and it will even re-evaluate your route automatically if you should get off course. The down side is that the GPS unit that came with it is not accurate and slow to respond. I first set it up in my driveway and the GPS indicated that my position was in the woods 200 yards away. While driving, the GPS did track well on major roads. However, on small roads, off-ramps and residential areas it thought that I had left the road and was 4-wheeling in the field next to the road. This tended to confuse the software. Do not use the gas station feature in the software, unless you know what you are doing; otherwise, when the software thinks that you are low on gas it will direct you off at each exit that has a gas station. Until you realize what is going on, you will be loosing a lot of time, confused by why the software keeps sending you on these detours. I guess I will need to read the directions on how to use the gas feature properly. 5 stars (Earthmate) - I do a great deal of traveling by car. The Delorme Earthmate really helps me out. I just hook it up to my laptop and off I go. Because it works by satellite, you can always find what you're looking for in a hu...

DeLorme Street Atlas USA 2006 Plus DVD

1 stars (Don't waste your money on SA 2006) - Only buy this product if you want an awkward program. I have used Street Atlas from an early version. I bought the "Deluxe" version as soon as it came out. It's the precursor to SA2006. I test drove "Deluxe" for a couple of weeks and got VERY frustrated. In my area, the Deluxe maps were more outdated than good old SA8 - hard to believe but true. Functionality is VERY difficult. I run a laptop with GPS and find it too difficult to both drive and use the newest Street Atlas products. It needs too much "mousework". My recommended solutions. a) Get hold of an old SA8 or earlier version and check routes before you drive against maps.google.com b) Use Microsoft's Streets&Trips. Much better search engine. MUCH easier to use (intuitive for all Windows users). Driving speed/distance seems more accurate. Routes are generally better. And as a bonus, the maps include Canada. 3 stars (Hopelessly Outdated) - First off, its important to point out that DeLorme products are functional, accurate and offer comprehensive tools for what they do. What boggles my mind is that the company has continued to evolve their product using a near DOS-based interface. Nothing about Street Atlas USA is intuitive in the Windows sense of the word - there are no pulldown menus with familiar headings that might lead a user into a more logical sequence of tools or user options. Everything is laid out in the workspace with switches and overlapping options that are OFTEN difficult to grasp - frankly, aside from the lush graphics that are the maps, the rest of the program layout looks remarkably "1996". There has been no noticable innovation in user friendliness of the product in years, and apparently no movement to migrate the productline into the Windows (or Mac) realm. Its often as though the developers have advanced this product without ever looking at another software title... ...

Delorme Street Atlas USA 2006 Handheld

4 stars (Not bad for the price) - Well, Delorme has improved a somewhat bad product into something useful. I remember back with Street Atlas for the Palm and I couldn't get it to stop crashing. Now, I've installed SA USA 2006 and notice a great speed improvement. If your files are on a storage card or on an external device, it takes a while for it to load it into main memory and will slow it down. Put the map files you want to use into main memory and you'll see a great speed increase. The program is not without its bugs or bad features. Mapping is something that you might want to do on your PC instead of your PDA. Use the routing features for getting yourself on track or small distances instead. Like someone else said, unlike Streets and Trips, you can create your own maps by selecting blocks on the main map. The maps are somewhat smaller than S&T. Plus, it doesn't limit the size of the map unlike S&T. Mapping and directions are very good on the PC. If it gives you a route with a street that you know is One Way or Do Not Enter on it, you can edit it and the PC will recalculate. This program on the PC *actually* can send just a route to a PDA. Go to "Map Files" and hit Exchange. The program will copy the file to your ActiveSync directory. You can set the Off Route distance to 500 ft or Infinite when tracking by Route. The GPS seems to be slightly off from the map at times, but not by much. One thing that most people find annoying is that the system doesn't redraw the map until the cursor is at the edge of the screen. This can get annoying, but if you zoom out a bit and use the routing bar at the bottom to indicate when and how far the next turn is, you can get used to it. Some map programs go for $90 that can do about what this program does, but for $35, it does what I expected from it. It's much better than Rand McNally's version (which I can't even get to calculate directions). Delorme has improved this product quite a bit (and it even mentio...

Delorme Topo USA v5 0 DVD

5 stars (Works for Me) - I bought this software to plan bicycle routes and produce grade profiles. It does this well and was easy to learn. I run it on a year old laptop computer and the performance is satisfactory. 1 stars (Hikers - Look Elsewhere) - I bought this software for producing detail maps and profiles for hiking. In short, I'm very dissapointed and have uninstalled the app. Why? - the maps are outdated and inaccurate, many (well established) trails are missing or miss-routed. - the software is unstable resulting in multiple crashes requiring TaskMan kills (try exporting a profile as a jpeg). - the UI is awful. Simple tasks require you to hunt through multiple screens with poor (if any) results. - the search functionality is next to useless. Try finding a lake by name in your local area... - the on screen nav is cumbersome at best, resulting in magnification or pans that confound and frustrate. Where's the undo? I've written Windows apps since the early 80's (Win v1.03). This one's what we call a dog. 1 stars (For only the most advanced and patient users....) - I bought this product to use with my Garmin etrex GPS unit. The website claims it is compatable, but it turns out it is not. I was unable to successfully navigate or use more than about 10% of the features, and I consider myself a moderate to advanced user. Another negitive thing about this program is the fact it comes with NO instruction manual! Tech support is a long distance call, available only during very limited hours. Finally, navigating around any map requires constant reloading which takes forever. I have a $3500 computer,as fast as they currently make them and I found myself waiting for images to load constantly. Do yourself a favor and try another program. ...
