A Child Called -It-- One Child-s Courage to Survive

4 stars (Wonderful Insight into Resilence and Protective Factors) - I had been wanting to purchase this book for quite some time, but never got around to it until it was assigned for a psychology course I was enrolled in. True, it is a short text, and true, the grammar is not perfect - but it is not meant to be. Pelzer wrote the book as an adult, but tried to write it from his perspective when he was a child (the time period when he actually experienced the events detailed in the book). If this book had been written from a purely adult, grammatically "proper" perspective, it would have gained a more "distant" tone and thereby lost some of it's power to really grip and touch the reader. The text can be read in awe of what Pelzer experienced as a child, certainly. But that is not all one can gather from it. The trianglization, power struggles, and family dynamics which play out throughout the story are not only dramatic, but very clinically realistic. The potential effects of alcohol use on family structure are an eye-opener. And most of all, one should note the protective factors David found in his life which enabled him to survive his mother's horrendous patterns of abuse - while they are not nearly so dramatic as all the "punishment" he endured, they are just as significant. This would be a good book particularly for anyone who works with children (or plans to), whether they are a psychologist, counselor, educator, social worker, mentor, or even a parent. Too often adults see only the negative things that have happened to a child, and fear the effects that those things may have on the child's behavior or personality... it is just as important to be able to recognize what strengths, talents, and interests are in children which allow them to cope with or overcome negative factors. 1 stars (laundry list with no context) - If the abuse was real, or if even part of it was, my sympathy goes out to the author and my praise for rising above it. Ho...

The Courage to Teach - Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher-s Life

2 stars (Not typical style) - I have heard many speak highly of the book, but I just don't get it. There is passion in his style and his delivery encouraging teachers to maintain integrity, to stay true to themselves, and so forth. I guess that I lose interest due to the verbose language used. There are many aspects to teaching, and it is a lot of work; I am not equating this aspect to success or failure for connection with the students. As I said, many that I have spoken to enjoy it... I don't. 5 stars (The Courage to Teach - Palmer) - The book was in excellent condition. The box was partially opened, but the product unharmed. Audrey 4 stars (for any educator at any grade level!) - I read this for a graduate school assignment. It is a good book. Parker believes that classrooms should be subject-centered, not student-centered. It is very interesting why he states this. I actually liked the book the second time I read it. He goes on about not losing your identity while you teach and about not copying techniques that are not true to yourself. He gives a lot of insightful information. I recommend it to anyone in the field of education. I actually think I appreciated it more due to the fact that I have teaching experience. ...

Understanding Your Users- A Practical Guide to User Requirements Methods- Tools- and Techniques

5 stars (Must for usability and product design professionals) - Courage and Baxter did an amazing job writing this book, thank you! I really liked the fact that this book is based on years of realworld experiences from commerial high technology company. They have very good examples from real projects - which is a plus. Like the book said, it's very practical! You can use it out of the box from day 1. As a product design professional with years of experience in this field, book confirmed some of the techniques and approaches that I have been using (but I couldn't share it due to commerical reasons). It also covered topics that I wasn't very familiar with. I especially enjoyed reading the section on group task analysis. Book is organized very well, high quality paper, with great visual examples and photos! I would also highly recommend this book for product managers, so hopefully they can write better requirements and specifications. 5 stars (Unflinchingly practical tour de force of usability...) - Baxter and Courage provide a rich, accessible toolbox of diverse yet interrelated usability methods that will enable a designer (UI, UE, IA, etc.) to understand user goals, values, and purposes. As a design professional without a human factors background I find this incredibly useful at the office! A handy reference guide with case studies and sample projects, there is also an undercurrent of strategic thought in terms of how to approach and intepret usability methods, thus complementing the designer's iterative art. This book should also benefit design students and educators, who may be seeking a robust compilation of methods that speaks to the "real world" of adroitly performing usability to advance a design's evolution. 5 stars (A Very Usable Guide to User Requirements) - Courage and Baxter have assembled an extremely thorough, practical, and readable guide to a diverse array of user requirements methods available to the usability and design professional. "Und...
