Rosetta Stone French Level 1 - 2 Win-Mac Personal Edition

5 stars (Excellent) - I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase of Rosetta Stone French 1 and 2. It is by far the best language course I have ever had the pleasure of studying. It is most complete in it's scope of study in that you have the opportunity to hear, read, write and repeat the French you are learning in each lesson module. I find the feedback on my pronunciation most useful; it's also a lot of fun! Highly recommended. 2 stars (too much hype and overpriced) - This is good for learning vocabulary, but NOT good at all for learning how to speak french. In fact, you wind up speaking poor disjointed french as a result of this. It is a good concept that unfortunately is more hype than any good. The price is rediculous considering other better products exist out there that are at lower prices (although they won't claim to have been used by NASA). To me, this is just another churned out, language product, created from a template, and to a budget. They have obviously good marketing skills, etc, but this is definately not created for the customer, ... I think the best word to describe this product is: gimick. 5 stars (I will tell you all about this program,so read this reveiw) - The first the you may notice is how high the price is. Well, it is absolutly worth every penny. If you complete both level one and two you'll be equipped to go to france. Now some of you that have read previous reveiws heard that you need a headset to do a part of the course, and that absolutly true. with the headset come a little microphone. A native speaker will say a word then you will say it back. You immediatly get feedback on how you did. It tells you how close you came to sound like the native speaker. So if you keep practicing that you will get closer and closer to speak the accent. And this is a must. You must be able to speak the french accent for it to be totally complete ,and thats what the headset is for . it will make you master the accent. so you may be saying where do...

SUSE LINUX Professional 9 3 Update

5 stars (I love it) - I use to be a Mandrake fan, But I really love this SUSE 9.3 the best. Evrything works and did on th first install. I am using it now and no blue screens of death. For you new linux users, don't believe the hype about Mandrake being more user friendly. SUSE 9.3 is a great Linux Distribution. 5 stars (Very complete -- full features) - I have been using SuSE Linux since version 7.3. I have upgraded the 7.3 to 9.0 the last time, now 9.3 looked very promising. Installation is a breeze. Lots of software including development tools, games, and server functionality. I have been a happy SuSE user for over four years now. I hope they keep up their good work since they got acquired by Novell and won't make major upsetting changes for their licensing and usage. Corporate greed, you never know... I am an avid Microsoft developer, administrator, and user (MCSE, MCSA, MCDBA), but if you want to get into Linux world, I assure you that you would not be disappointed if you get SuSE Linux 9.3. As they say, "Have a lot Fun!" Cheers! - Baskin 3 stars (Not up to the old SuSe standards) - I've been running various versions of SuSe Linux for several years now. It seems a shame that their level of quality appears to be suffering now that they are working for the Novell bottom line. I do professional development, and while the distribution is relatively OK, it was surprising to find that the development system as distributed doesn't seem to know much about threads (certainly not the debugger). If all you want is a client side system, then this distro will probably work for you. If you are more serious and in development, try another distro. Even Fedora Core 4 looks better. ...

Rosetta Stone Spanish Latin America Level 1 - 2 Win-Mac Personal Edition

5 stars (Good item, poor service) - The item I purchased is great, but it was very difficult to get it since I am overseas and had to send it home then send it out again!!! Would suggest this product to anyone, but would not suggest someone buying it from amazon if they are out of the country. Regards TJ 5 stars (Rosetta Stone Spanish Level 1&2 Personal Edition (Latin America)) - I bought this product for my two kids, ages 6 and 8. It has been very user friendly and my kids enjoy using it. It does not teach grammar, per se, but my kids pick it up. They need no help from me to do their lessons, and are learning good pronunciation. I am very satisfied with the program and would recommend it particularly for children. 5 stars (The Best Way I've Found!) - I cannot say enough about this program. You don't even have to try to start learning. Lessons fly by and once I've learned a word, I think about it automatically, instead of trying to make associations with how the word sounds or something. (Example: instead of thinking "Rice... think of an arrow going into a bowl of rice... oh, yeah, Arroz" - I just see rice and think arroz. I'm not translating from English to Spanish, I'm thinking in Spanish. When I had to take Spanish classes (required for classroom credit) I found that not only did the little I had done in Rosetta Stone helped me excel, but that my pronunciation was unbeatable because I had been constantly using the Rosetta Stone program. While other students struggled to put together sentences, I said sentences almost as quickly as if I were speaking in English, because this program does that - It Helps You THINK in Spanish! This is not because I am any smarter than anyone else; historically in classes I have been an unremarkable student. I personally didn't use the voice recognition part as much, but it also helped. It wasn't as much that I was exactly copying the voice as it was the fact that I could hear how it was supposed to be pronounced...

Microsoft Works Suite 2005

5 stars (Great) - This was great and It worked marvelous, praise GOD for his great provision. Thankyou!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I did not feal like spending $200 on word 2005! God Is Good All The Time! 3 stars (Decent software, but not worth the cash) - Microsoft has, as always, produced decent software. It is nothing to get excited over, but it does its job. The problem with this software, as with all other Microsoft software, is that it is so overpriced. If it is your company buying or something, then go ahead and get it, the software works well, and it does its job as well as anything else you're going to find, not to mention that since most other people use Microsoft products, your documents will be compatible. But if you are buying for yourself, I strongly suggest you look into something else. There are numerous open source programs available on the internet, as well as other commercial programs that can be bought for less money that will work just as well. As for the other programs (money, encarta, picture it, streets & trips), they are also not that great. Why buy an expensive Microsoft encarta when you have Wikipedia? Why buy streets and trips when you have MapQuest and Google Earth? Why buy Money when you can get other programs that are just as good if not better either cheap or free? The choice is up to you 3 stars (Dont think I'll like it as much..........) - as my old Works Suite 2002. I tried installing the 2002 suite on my new computer. Kept getting an error message about not being able to display the EULA agreement for me to accept, and thus wont install the Works Task launcher. I tried all the "fixes" but it just wouldnt install, so, I bought the Works Suite 2005 from Amazon. Well, I got an error message after I installed it. This time about not being able to run it on Windows 95, 98 and 2000. Well, I'm using XP Pro. Long story short, I just right clicked on TASK LAUNCHER, THEN COMPATIBILITY, THEN UNCHECKED THE COMPATIBILITY MODE BOX, and the ...

Quicken 2006 Mac

1 stars (Nothing New - Don't "updgrade") - Quicken Mac 2006 is not much of an upgrade. Compared to the 2004 version, the only change I can see is the color on some charts and some very minor changes. Quicken for PC is an excellent program. Quicken for Mac is mediocre. If you don't have any finance software and have a Mac, Quicken might still be your best bet. But don't pay for an upgrade if you have an earlier version - you'll get zero for your dollar. (I will give Quicken credit for backing their lame product with a money back guarantee ... and I will take them up on their offer.) I'd be happy to pay $99 for a Quicken Mac comparable to the PC version, but this isn't it. 1 stars (Full of bugs) - I've been using Quicken for more than 10 years. I started as a Windows user, and transferred to Quicken for Mac (QM) when I switched to the Mac in 2001. Sadly, QM appears to be the red-headed stepchild in the Intuit family. QM is consistently buggy. The user interface is dated (even moreso when compared with a current version of Quicken for Windows). My current issue with QM is that I cannot switch between Quicken data files without it crashing. I have two separate data files: one for my personal finances (which has my personal bank account, my credit cards, my retirement accounts, and a couple of individual stocks) and one for my household finances (which has a joint chequing account and credit cards). Switching between the two data files is guaranteed to crash QM. I'm using the latest version of OS X, and I'm using the latest patch for QM. Furthermore, QM displays several screen-painting issues that make it unreadable. Sometimes hiding the application fixes the issue, but oftentimes I have to quit QM and start it back up again. I'm beginning to feel like I'm using a Windows machine all over again. Please, Intuit, give QM some attention. It seems unlikely that they will, though; QM has been buggy for a few releases now, and they have barely bothere...

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2

1 stars (Awful) - This operating system was one of the most unsatisfactory I have ever used--including DOS, Win 3.1, Windows 95 and Windows 98. Aside from being incompatible with older hardware, XP Home Edition crashes frequently--particularly if you like to work with several windows open at once. Most important, the program is highly susceptible to viruses and hackers. Preventing these two problems requires expensive add-on software and hardware. True enough, the built-in firewall OUGHT to work. But in my case, hackers got in anyway. I had to hire an expensive data recovery guru--another story in itself. Even reinstalling the program did not solve the problem. My computer was completely compromised. I was eventually forced to junk the machine. Even installing service pack 2 did not help. After my dreadful experience with XP Home Edition, I have sworn off Windows forever. Mac and Linux are both far superior. The latter also works alongside Windows, but why anyone would want Windows on their machine is beyond me. 4 stars (I'm so glad I upgraded) - Yes, I know this isn't the "Upgrade" version. I found this for a lot less at CompUSA and I bought the new computer version when I upgraded from a 10 to a 40 GB hard drive, so it was infact just like "a new computer" when I installed this. First of all, let me say that I am very glad I bought this. XP has taken care of pretty much all of the computer nightmares that I had with ME. The only complaint I have is with battery life. XP uses up more battery life and so my laptop doesn't run on the battery for as long as it's suppossed to. Also, the Windows Firewall that comes with Service Pack 2 doesn't work that well. It's better than nothing (I think). My dad had horrible problems with his computer before I convinced him to purchase the Norton Personal Firewall 2004. 3 stars (Its a Microsoft product) - Windows is good for several things. But being flexible is NOT one of them. The issue with this product is you can't use...

Rosetta Stone Spanish Latin America Level 1 Win-Mac Personal Edition

2 stars (It may be effective for some, but it is not the program for me) - Rosetta Stone was the first Spanish language program that I had tried. (I have previously studied French, Latin, and ancient Greek.) I ordered it from the company directly but returned it after about a month. It has some interesting unique features but it was not for me. Here are the positives: 1. The pictures are colorful and memorable and will help you learn many words quickly. 2. There is an interesting effective feature which allows you to listen to a word or phrase in Spanish, record your voice, and playback. Then a scale tells you how close your voice came to that of a native speaker. But I would not spend extensive time repeating the same word or phrase because it is very difficult to meet their standard for "native speaker." These are the negatives: 1. There is a great emphasis on sentences that are not practical for an adult tourist, business person, or employee wanting to speak Spanish with native speakers. In addition, most of the sentences have verbs in the present progressive tense; there is not enough practice in all the Spanish verb tenses. There are many sentences in Spanish about boys under the table, girls walking, women waving, and men falling. 2. Because I work at a computer all day at work, I am not motiviated to sit at a computer for long during my spare time. Because I am eager to learn useful Spanish quickly, Pimsleur is more effective for me. I can listen to the CDs in my car or at home. In addition, I have learned more sentences that I may want to use such as how to find a bathroom, restaurant, or pharmacy; or how to order food. Rosetta Stone may be a good program for a child who likes to use the computer or an individual who has never studied Romance languages before. 5 stars (rosetta stone spanish) - this program is wonderfull for anyone that want to learn any spanish.I seen many other programs but by far this is the best.it cost more b...

Microsoft Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2

5 stars (Best Version Ever) - I've been really impressed with this release of Windows. Couple it with the the latest Service Pack 2 and it really shines. I work as a technician at a computer repair shop, and let me tell you it is by far the easiest version of Microsoft Windows to support. 1. It's driver database is outstanding. I get so amazed when I plug in a device and it automatically installs it. 2. I'm also impressed with the stability of this version. Remember the blue screen that you always got in earlier versions?? It's basically gone!! 3. The built-in popup blocker included with service pack 2 does an excellent job of blocking popups. My popups are gone!! 4. It also does a fine job of backwards compatibility. I've already ran OLD ms-dos programs on my XP machine just for the kicks. 5. And the Windows Restore capability is awesome. I've fixed a problem by simply restoring it to yesterday. These are just a few of the many features of Windows XP. All in all, I'm well pleased. Buy it. 1 stars (The XP is for eXtra Painful) - As I had commented earlier, my biggest business demand is for people wanting to upgrade to Win 2000 from Win XP. I have seen people scream at the XP operating system. I have seen people get peeved with their "helpful" relatives who had upgraded their system from Win 98 or Win 2000 without their knowledge. XP is slow, buggy, instrusive and easily infected. It is the leper and syphilic of OS's. Do yourself a favor for your business and your family peace. Avoid XP at all costs. All those other people recommeding XP on other websites(Present Amazon company excluded. I am convinced of their sincerity!), makes me wonder if this is astroturf marketing from Redmond. 4 stars (Good OS for Professionals) - You can find most of these goods in Home edition. If you are not sure which type is for you, you may want to read my review on Windows XP Home Edition. If you find it's good enough for you, choosing that would be a smart choice as it is ...

Rosetta Stone German Level 1 - 2 Win-Mac Personal Edition

2 stars (Boooring) - I have been using this product now for almost a year. The only reason I insist using it is because I feel really bad for wasting my money. First, this is not worth $300 bucks. There are only still pictures and sound. No movies or any fancy graphics, so why the price? Second it is very repetitive and it does not advance in a very logical way so that you recognize the grammatical structures behind the ever changing sentences. Third, the sentences that you have to repeat over and over are not practical at all. You keep memorizing thins like "the boy is under the airplane" or "the ball is on the boy's head". Initially I thought, well this is because it progresses very slowly which is not necessarily bad. But then I took a look at the last lessons; you just keep repeating useless senteces like these without real things used on a dialogue. I cannot recommend you another course because I spent so much in this one that I do not want to try again and get disappointed. Don't be fooled by the wonderful reviews like I was. This is definitively NOT worth 300 dollars. It is not even useful for basic converstion. I have learned much more from simple travel books and cassettes from the library. Ah, and if you think that by repeating these structures alone you will understand german grammar ... 1 stars (Don't Buy ..Save your money) - This software ranks 5th among the top ten German language software.I bought Instant Immersion German and it was superior at only $39.95. I had to send back this software after 1 day of use and paying $300.00. It was very boreing and really not that exciting to keep you wanting to go back and learn more , not to mention some compatibility problems..Instant Immersion was so much better and more interesting and retainable..I don't know what NASA was thinking about when they bought this software for the astronauts? It would be great if you only had to say HI or Bye 278 miles above the earth with the Russians..Please don't put $300.00...

Sun StarOffice 8

4 stars (a nice office suite) - I have been using StarOffice since version 5.2, it's a great product. SUN provides a trial version of Staroffice 8. It's always a good idea to try something before you buy it, especially if you are new to it. Sun also sells a downloadable version of StarOffice 8 at $69.99. If you are a student or a teacher, you can download StarOffice 8 for free from SUN's education software programm. Actually that's how I get my StarOffice since version 5.2. StarOffice 8 is based on OpenOffice 2 with a little bit more features, including more fonts, more clip art and 60 days of free support. If those are not important to you, you might just want to download OpenOffice 2.0 since it's totally free. Here is my experience of using StarOffice. 1. There are many non-Microsoft office softwares, none of them is 100% compatible with Microsoft Office. But the compatibility is more than enough for home users who do not heavily use Macro or scripts. I use StarOffice at home, Microsoft Office at school, I don't have any serious problem to use one to open files created by another. 2. SUN does not provide a full user manual for the downloadable version when I wrote this review though a simple getting-start guide is available at their website, I don't know if it's included in the retail package. That's too bad for new buyers since the features and functions can easily overwhelm anybody. But if you used StarOffice in the past, you should have no problem. I still use the manual of version 7 for version 8 since most of it does not change much. The manual for OpenOffice 2.0 applies for StarOffice 8 too. I just downloaded the manual. It's still in draft version, but looks pretty much complete. 3. StarOffice 8 is a solid package which covers everything for home use. 4. The PDF export function is great. My overall experience with this software is more than satisfactory. ...

Rosetta Stone Portuguese Brazil Level 1 - 2 Win-Mac Personal Edition

4 stars (Great, but one major flaw.) - This program, simply put, is great! The concept behind it is so simple, yet it so effective. The student can never get bored because there are always new drills, new phrases, new pictures, and new exercises. The only reason I gave this a four instead of a five was the price. (see my review on Pimsleur Portuguese). The program is good but it is far from complex. Anyone can make it; it is just a series of jpeg images and mp3 audio files put together. I seriously doubt this product's price should be this high. Many great students eager to learn the beautiful language called Portuguese may be drawn away from this great program simply because of the price. This is why I think this program should be much cheaper than advertised. After all, it's a language progam, not an engineer's development tool. Portuguese can be a hard language at first, but this progam can help even the most linguistically challenged student achieve his or her goal of learning a foreign language. I sure did! 5 stars (Thanks Rosetta Stone) - This program is amazing! I've had it for only a couple years and although I'm only on the first couple lessons of Level I Unit 2 of Brazilian Portuguese on an on/off basis, so wonderful is this course in it's ability to reach me it doesn't matter that I'm not drilling myself constantly. I can get away from it for a while, get back to it and remember because it uses picture association which is more effective than just reading text. I've discovered to my ecastacy that I'm actually starting to think in the language exclusively. Unlike other langauge courses I've taken it's laboriously confusing to be expected to translate because of the tendency to think in your own language first, comparing, then putting things together back into the foreign language. With this course I can now look at a picture that says "the girl has black hair" and having learned all the words in Portugese, I'm not thinking in English to begin wi...

Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 Win-Mac

4 stars (Still the best of the WYSIWYG field) - Dreamweaver consistently ranks high in the field of WYSIWYG web site editors. This release does not stray from this position. Considering GoLive and FrontPage are the current competition, it is not hard to see why (will be interesting to see what comes out with Microsoft Expressions Quartz). As with previous versions, Dreamweaver 8 has the standard Dreamweaver interface. When you install, you have the option of setting up like a developer or setting up like a designer. It is not as easy to change the scheme (or not as evident), but this is not a major deal as a single developer rarely changes the setup of his development environment. Dreamweaver 8 touts itself as the king of CSS and it has certainly made some wonderful inroads. By default, you can create styles in a page or in a stylesheet. Unfortunately, it falls a little short in allowing you to change your mind in this place, as well. It would be nice, for example, to drag tested styles from a test page up to the stylesheet. Instead, I have to manually cut and paste or recreate styles. Yes, this is minor, but can't someone make a tool that does this? I would also love to see a tool that recognizes I have already created a style with the same feature or allows me to use the standard font and paragraph changes and automatically create a style. But, I digress, there is no tool that does that ... yet. The CSS Styles tab gives you a great way of getting down to the properties of a particular CSS style. If you do not want to bring up the designer, which is how you normally create your style, you simply add properties to the style in the CSS Styles tab. Very nice feature. A little different than the properties view in MS products, but much more compact. Dreamweaver 8 is better at .NET development than FrontPage. It also allows a variety of other development paradigms: ASP (either VBScript or JavaScript), ASP.NET (C# or VB.NET), ColdFusion, JSP and PHP (with MySQL). Thi...

Rosetta Stone Chinese Level 1 - 2 Win-Mac Personal Edition

4 stars (Very good if you are a somewhat advanced) - As most of the reviewers have mentioned, this course is not for the beginner, even though Rosetta Stone advertises it differently. It can be very useful to you under the following conditions: 1) You already have an understanding of Chinese grammar, so that the sometimes very complex sentences even in early lessons won't overwhelm you. In turn you will profit immensely from the amount of vocabulary you can learn in a short time. 2) You don't expect to get conversational proficiency. Rosetta Stone teaches you to describe pictures, something which is done in many real-life language courses I have visited. One could say it is just a concentrated form of this particular exercise. That said, it will enhance your ability to describe and to link words to objects and anchor that link in your brain. For me that method works much better than vocab lists, even in a flash card form. Especially, I don't know a better way to learn modifiers, an essential part of Chinese grammar. 3) You always have a dictionary at hand to look up words because the programm does not give you any translations. 4) You don't expect it to teach you how to write Chinese characters. This is always something you have to do on your own, a computer cannot really help you. By changing between Pinyin and character script (traditional and simplified) in Rosetta you can learn how to recognize characters, but I think of it more of a vocabulary builder. Also, if much text is displayed, characters tend to get too small in order to be recognized. 5)You see it as one more tool in your collection of Chinese learning materials. In my opinion for Westerners Chinese can only be learned this way, you can't rely on a single book to provide everything. It gets 4 stars because of the price which I find outrageous. Given the fact that the Chinese version is merely an adaptation of the general Rosetta Stone system, it should go for no more than $150 both levels. So tr...

Mac OS X 10 4 Tiger DVD

5 stars (Sleek Tiger) - The finest OS to date. I was haapy with Paanthere, but Tiger is a steop above. 5 stars (From PC to Mac forever, this OS is amazing.) - I have used Windows for years and used a Mac at my work, I always liked the way the Mac handled graphics and also appreciated their ease of use. Mac OS X is so simple to use compared to Windows XP, it is by far the best OS I have ever used. I have not run into one single glitch, my powerbook has not crashed on me once. It had crashed on me a few times with OS 9, but this one seems to be a lot more stable. I like the dashboard also, you can quickly check the weather, stocks, dictionary or calendar all with a push of a button and built into the OS. You can also download many others for free from the Apple website. Itunes is a great application also and it is something I use all day long. Safari is far more superior in just about every-way compared to Microsoft Explorer, in fact it would take to long to list the benefits. I also liked the ability to run OS 9 in classic mode, so you can keep all your older software and still use them within OS X. If you are sick and tired of the Windows fatal exception errors or sending Windows error reports, then buy yourself an Apple and enjoy stress free living with OS X. 1 stars (Stick with Panther) - I get the spinning beachball and Microsoft Office application crashes about as often as I did in 10.1! I reformatted my hard disk and reinstalled Panther after trying the 10.4.1 and 10.4.2 updates. For my needs Panther (10.3.8+) is a much more robust and stable operating system. ...
