4 stars (Do not but this product from Amazon or anyone else except Linspire!) - The product is great and loads in about 20 min. (except for the CNR activation). It is simpler to use than the latest versions of Windows. If you buy this product from Linspire, it seems that the activation of CNR is automatic. If you buy it from anyone else you will think you are trying to activate a MICROSOFT PRODUCT OR WORSE. Then after I jumped through all of the hoops, I get this email from the Linspire Team: "It's been several days since you've signed up, and we've noticed that you haven't yet purchased the CNR Service." A good product - just don't buy it from here! 3 stars (3 stars because it has bash, the rest I don't like) - As far as linux goes I would not recommend this distro. reason 1- It is to dumbed down to be all that good,It is harder to work with then suse or mandrake. reason 2- It was ok for them to call themselves lindows to upset microsoft but now they are mad because a distro out there is called freespire. come on people get a life, that is what linux has been about sharing the code for the better of everyone. reason 3- They charge for what most other distros offer for free to me they are too close to microsoft. now for the positive notes. 1 bash is still the login shell and that alone offers a lot of power. 2 kde is still a great desktop to work with. 3 the most important thing it is still linux so that is still better than M$ or apple. But if you are really looking for a easy to use linux distro without all the hassel, of cost get mandriva or suse, even debian and it's many followers is a better chioce. As for linspire I am glade they are trying to make an easy to use desktop to challange Microcrap,but they are going about it the wrong way. 2 stars (Why are you paying for free software??) - Linspire had a great idea: to bring Linux to the masses who are tired of the OS from Redmond. 3 stars (Imprisoned Linux: Good for $ Novice, Not So Much For Everyone Else) - Quick Summary: Linspire is a linux based OS that provides an easy means of converting from a Windows platform. Installing and getting application software is made easy through a database named CNR (Click-N-Run) and installing those programs is streamlined. It is great for people unfamiliar with Linux but may not be the best distro for people looking to become knowledgable in Linux. There are other Linux OS's that are free of charge, more open (less restraints) and have a number of forums for support. Linspire charges you for software that may be free! outside of Linspire's Click-N-Pay system. Linspire comments out or limits package repositories - which is essentially trying to make you use their way of doing things - and make an educated decision before purchase. If you want the easiest possible transition from Windows to Linux and don't mind the restraints - go Linspire. More Details: PRO's: If you're a beginner to Linux - don't know much about Operating Systems - and don't plan on learning a whole lot about them - then Linspire is probably your best choice. It offers the stability and security of a Linux system with the familiar Windows atmosphere. Install is easy and getting around will be as well. You can find a lot of software in their Click-N-Run database and program install is painless. If your familiar with Linux or OS's - or you are willing to learn and you will work around the restraints in Linspire - then go for it! BUT... CON's: If you want to learn Linux, tweak the system and enjoy the freedom that is open source OS - then you should check out Ubuntu or SUSE. 5 stars (SUSE 9.2 is GREAT) - Upgraded to 9.2 from 7.x, very pleased with the product. It found the systems hardware quickly and with no effort on my part. My palm pilot, printer, usb thumb drive, email, web surfing are all 100% operational. Checking for O/S updates is a snap and requires no system admin knowledge. This Novell/SUSE is so much fun! For those wanting to compile code, browse internet, do email in an environment other than with MS, this is the way to go. Plus all your doc's, pdf's, jpeg's all work too. Install was a snap, gui's are great, very high quality product. 5 stars (Best linux Distro money can buy) - SuSE Linux is the oldest commercial distro of Linux, and they prove again why people are willing to pay for something that they can essentially get for free. SuSE 9.2 Pro puts Fedora Core, Mandrake, Slackware, Debian and the others to shame in every aspect. Hardware support I found to be excellent, there was nothing that didn't detect or work correctly. YaST made it easy to choose what to install and they give you tons of options, more than WindowsXP could ever dream of giving you. While i'm not a big fan of Gnome, Novell makes it look pretty good and surprisingly nice to use. KDE is in it's natural and beautiful state and the easy of use is pretty good. Don't buy into the people who write 1-star reviews of this product claiming that SuSE destroyed all their data on install. If you don't know what you're doing you should not use this, period. Hold nobody accountable for yourself if you screw things up. Fantastic distro, perfect for anybody learning to use Linux/UNIX. SuSE Linux 10 0 DVD

3 stars (SuSe and Digital Video Editing) - I'll be happy to be proven wrong by 10.0, but one area where 9.3 was very weak was Digital Video (DV) editing. There are and abundance of robust and stable commercial packages available for Windows for around $100. My favorite is Pure Motion's Edit Studio. The Suse trial version of MainActor crashed frequently and I could not get Broadcast 2000 to run at all other than in DV capture mode. Kino worked, but is low on features and not intuitive. Cinelerra looks powerful, but its specs demand high-powered hardware, and it scared me off. I understand that there are licensing issues with DRM, codecs etc, but DV has now become a mainstream activity on home PCs. I could easily migrate to Suse Linux, but I have to keep a Windows box around to edit DV and create DVDs. For out-of-the-box DV editing, Win boxes are way ahead on points - don't even consider Linux if you do DV exclusively. On the other hand, the KB III burning software distributed with Suse works flawlessly, and I was able to get freeware MPEG-II conversions running. The quality of the encodings when viewed with Xine was amazing. One very interesting DV tool in Linux is the Blender 3D graphics program, which includes many video post-processing features, and allows you to add special effects, graphical overlays, and animated titles. [However, Blender also runs fine on Win PCs.] If you don't mind hunting down and installing packages to mess around with, it is worth considering Linux for post-processing. Firewire support worked flawlessly up to a point, but I had to find packages to support DV capture from my Sony camcorder. I also had problems getting Suse to recognize and mount a large-capacity LaCie firewire drive, partitioned into NTFS and Fat-32 partitions. One other issue is file formats. Xandros has made the specific effort of trying to be just like Windows XP using the Linux kernel. It succeeds! If you want an easy, simple to use, full featured experience try Xandros 3.0 Business Edition. The business edition does supply you with Star Office 7 (the Linux/open source version of Microsoft's Office 2003)and CodeWeaver's CrossOver Office (a program that allows you to run many Windows programs in a Linux environment). I did not think it would be that easy until I tried navigating my business LAN and found it was already done for me!! HOORAY!!!! Xandros is soooooooo beginner/user friendly. You will feel right at home and it will only cost you $120 !!! Windows XP Pro costs $200. If you have 1 home machine, you save $80. If you have 10 office computers, you save $800!
