Rosetta Stone Portuguese Brazil Level 1 - 2 Win-Mac Personal Edition

4 stars (Great, but one major flaw.) - This program, simply put, is great! The concept behind it is so simple, yet it so effective. The student can never get bored because there are always new drills, new phrases, new pictures, and new exercises. The only reason I gave this a four instead of a five was the price. (see my review on Pimsleur Portuguese). The program is good but it is far from complex. Anyone can make it; it is just a series of jpeg images and mp3 audio files put together. I seriously doubt this product's price should be this high. Many great students eager to learn the beautiful language called Portuguese may be drawn away from this great program simply because of the price. This is why I think this program should be much cheaper than advertised. After all, it's a language progam, not an engineer's development tool. Portuguese can be a hard language at first, but this progam can help even the most linguistically challenged student achieve his or her goal of learning a foreign language. I sure did! 5 stars (Thanks Rosetta Stone) - This program is amazing! I've had it for only a couple years and although I'm only on the first couple lessons of Level I Unit 2 of Brazilian Portuguese on an on/off basis, so wonderful is this course in it's ability to reach me it doesn't matter that I'm not drilling myself constantly. I can get away from it for a while, get back to it and remember because it uses picture association which is more effective than just reading text. I've discovered to my ecastacy that I'm actually starting to think in the language exclusively. Unlike other langauge courses I've taken it's laboriously confusing to be expected to translate because of the tendency to think in your own language first, comparing, then putting things together back into the foreign language. With this course I can now look at a picture that says "the girl has black hair" and having learned all the words in Portugese, I'm not thinking in English to begin wi...

Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 Win-Mac

4 stars (Still the best of the WYSIWYG field) - Dreamweaver consistently ranks high in the field of WYSIWYG web site editors. This release does not stray from this position. Considering GoLive and FrontPage are the current competition, it is not hard to see why (will be interesting to see what comes out with Microsoft Expressions Quartz). As with previous versions, Dreamweaver 8 has the standard Dreamweaver interface. When you install, you have the option of setting up like a developer or setting up like a designer. It is not as easy to change the scheme (or not as evident), but this is not a major deal as a single developer rarely changes the setup of his development environment. Dreamweaver 8 touts itself as the king of CSS and it has certainly made some wonderful inroads. By default, you can create styles in a page or in a stylesheet. Unfortunately, it falls a little short in allowing you to change your mind in this place, as well. It would be nice, for example, to drag tested styles from a test page up to the stylesheet. Instead, I have to manually cut and paste or recreate styles. Yes, this is minor, but can't someone make a tool that does this? I would also love to see a tool that recognizes I have already created a style with the same feature or allows me to use the standard font and paragraph changes and automatically create a style. But, I digress, there is no tool that does that ... yet. The CSS Styles tab gives you a great way of getting down to the properties of a particular CSS style. If you do not want to bring up the designer, which is how you normally create your style, you simply add properties to the style in the CSS Styles tab. Very nice feature. A little different than the properties view in MS products, but much more compact. Dreamweaver 8 is better at .NET development than FrontPage. It also allows a variety of other development paradigms: ASP (either VBScript or JavaScript), ASP.NET (C# or VB.NET), ColdFusion, JSP and PHP (with MySQL). Thi...

Suse Linux Professional 9 2

5 stars (SUSE 9.2 is GREAT) - Upgraded to 9.2 from 7.x, very pleased with the product. It found the systems hardware quickly and with no effort on my part. My palm pilot, printer, usb thumb drive, email, web surfing are all 100% operational. Checking for O/S updates is a snap and requires no system admin knowledge. This Novell/SUSE is so much fun! For those wanting to compile code, browse internet, do email in an environment other than with MS, this is the way to go. Plus all your doc's, pdf's, jpeg's all work too. Install was a snap, gui's are great, very high quality product. 5 stars (Best linux Distro money can buy) - SuSE Linux is the oldest commercial distro of Linux, and they prove again why people are willing to pay for something that they can essentially get for free. SuSE 9.2 Pro puts Fedora Core, Mandrake, Slackware, Debian and the others to shame in every aspect. Hardware support I found to be excellent, there was nothing that didn't detect or work correctly. YaST made it easy to choose what to install and they give you tons of options, more than WindowsXP could ever dream of giving you. While i'm not a big fan of Gnome, Novell makes it look pretty good and surprisingly nice to use. KDE is in it's natural and beautiful state and the easy of use is pretty good. Don't buy into the people who write 1-star reviews of this product claiming that SuSE destroyed all their data on install. If you don't know what you're doing you should not use this, period. Hold nobody accountable for yourself if you screw things up. Fantastic distro, perfect for anybody learning to use Linux/UNIX. You won't be disappointed! 5 stars (XP 2 + SUSE removable hard drive = ideal for learning UNIX.) - I say that the end of 2004, start of 2005 was the time to get a pimpin' new PC. I booted SuSE 7.2 on a partition with Windows 2000 many years ago and the result was not funny. If you choose to dual-boot a Windows Linux machine, then get two hard drives for it. Take a hint. Apple Mac 3 5 Online Service

2 stars (Too expensive and much to basic, otherwise good.) - First let me say that I am a long time Mac user and I am trying to see all Apple services from it's positive side, so don't thing this is a beating from a Mac hater or something like that.... The pro's: -Very nice integration into Mac OS X -Very convenient backup possibility -Very nice website templates -Stylish email address (@mac.com) -Massive load of clips and sounds for "Garage Band" -Free virus scanner -Premium customer service (for .Mac services only) Now the con's (which are overwhelming) -The Price ($99 for 1000MB of space (for hosting and email), are you kidding me? Considering that you get a free email account with 2.5 GB right now.... Apple, please upgrade your service. Also they let you pay for every extra. You are paying extra for another email address and if you like to have more space. -The webhosting is much to basic. You can use simple html and that's it. Apple doesn't offer you to use scripts, databases... nothing. They don't even offer to host your own message board, blog or chat. I realized for the most basic user this does not mean anything, but for advanced users the webhosting is much too basic. -When you sign up you have to select a username. This username will be your email (yourname@mac.com and your URL (members.mac.com/yourname). You might think that there are not that many .mac users (about a million, the last time I checked), but thing again: Every time somebody signs up for a free trial the chosen username will not be deleted for years! This means if I just signed up for a free trial in the year 2000 with the username "user555", then this name is still taken today. This means it's incredibly hard to find a good username today. -The mail service is much to basic and impossible to use for power-users: I had the following confirmed from the .Mac customer service: You can not send more than a certain number of eMail an hour (I believe it was 20), because this is co...

Xandros Linux Desktop OS 3 0 Deluxe Edition

5 stars (Driving to a Friendlier Linux) - Linux?# has been portrayed as a "nerd's only" Operating System. Xandros?# Linux?# has proven wrong that assumption. From the moment you put the CD-ROM on the drive, there are few and simple instructions to follow. The process is very user friendly. Once installed there is little grief for the programs used regularly on Windows?#, since Cross Over Office runs the most popular programs. Besides the novelty of loading a new OS, I get the tranquility of a virus free, spy ware free, environment and a safe heaven for my data. 2 stars (Cheap version of a Mac Computer) - A linux that tries to look like Windows, save your money and buy a real MAC. 5 stars (LOTS of bang for your buck, secure, easy to install OS) - I have been using Xandros 3.0 Deluxe Edition for about two months on my laptop computer (an HP Pavilion dv1130us), and yesterday I installed it on my old desktop (HP Pavilion 4535) and I would like to share my experiences on using the OS. EASE OF INSTALL Xandros is very easy to install. Just put the install CD in, and the computer will boot from the CD (older computers may need a boot floppy). Within a minute or two, the main installation screen will show up. You have the option of allowing Xandros to take over the entire hard disk (which would make one partition), take over a partition (this also allows you to make a dual-boot system with either another Linux distro like Linspire or a Windows OS), and make a new partition (if you want to make a dual-boot system but have only one partition). Next, Xandros will ask you to choose what kind of installation. I always choose complete/full installation (because I can...lol). Then you will give the computer a name, and you will also enter in a password for the administrator (a password is mandatory, and I think that helps greatly in making Xandros a secure OS). Next, just kick back as Xandros installs on the hard drive. Once the install is complete, the CD will eject and you...

Mac OS X Server 10 4 Tiger - Unlimited Clients

1 stars (OS X is flawed for server work) - I love OS X but what do you buy a server for?... to centralize tasks such as web hosting and databases. This article: http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=2520 points out how OS X is horribly crippled to handle such server tasks when compared to Linux running on a G5 or an AMD chip. The article is very fair and every effort was made to figure out what went wrong and the conclusion was that OS X has very poor threading functionality - something critical server applications like mysql and apache under heavy load. The Linux running on the G5 is upwards of 1000% faster than OS 10.4. Given the cost of Linux I'm not sure what would prompt me to purchase this server OS for 10 times worse performance on the same Apple hardware. I also find it ironic that Apple has touted the benefits of a single company making hardware and OS for years and this is the result. Embarassing. 1 stars (Be Careful Before You Upgrade) - I thought for the first time that I'd stay on the cuttng edge of Mac OS. Little did I know that under Tiger all of my applications would crash more often and run more slowly. I also didn't know that Symantec wouldn't support Tiger, so that my old versions of Norton Utilities and Norton Antivirus no longer work while Symantec does not plan to sell versions that do work on Tiger. Both my classic applications and my OS X applications run slower and crash more often. I really regret upgrading. Sure, the widgets function is nice, but not worth the trouble Tiger has caused me. 5 stars (Great update to the OS system) - With the exception of one (big) negative, this has been a terrific upgrade. There is no doubt that this is an 'optimized' system, as my Mac G4 is blazing through things faster than ever. Standards like iPhoto and iTunes still put Apple on the cutting edge, but new features like Safari and the Dashboard/Widgets are great for making your life easier. So, what was the one big negative, you wonder? ...

WebEasy Professional 5 0

5 stars (This is a strong product - confused by all the bad reviews) - I love this product. It is a very powerful tool and is so much better than fumbling around with DreamWeaver. While I'm not a mind reader, I feel that some of the bad reviews are from folks that thought it would be super EASY as in you snap you fingers and your website magically appears. You do have to read the manual and the instructions, but with taking a little time to learn you have a lot of functions at your disposal that are very easy to use. I have to admit that I haven't tried to access the HTML code yet, but my understanding is that you can't do this which I could see becoming frustrating. If they added that feature into the next version this product would be perfect. Nevertheless, I gave it 5 stars because as of yet there hasn't been anything that I've wanted to do that I couldn't do yet. 1 stars (Program is more complicated then learning HTML) - By the time you figure this program out you could have learned HML. I`m other word it not a very good easy to understand format where you can just start using it right away. I gave up wasting my time on it. . I have seen a few hosting services that have easy to understand templates that are very well formatted and easy to manipulate, but you really got to look around unfortunately. Maybe I'll just serch simple html code "basic easy html... 1 stars (Sucky Program) - I think that this "web easy 5" software sucks, the link thing did not work either, it kept opening it up in new windows! It really sucks, I am getting web editor 6.0! ...

Mac OS X 10 4 Tiger Family Pack - 5 Client DVD

5 stars (The Best) - What can you say about the best operating system in the world!!! It Rocks....everything about is great! Get it. Use it. You will not be sorry! 5 stars (The Best OS yet!!!!) - I decided to write a review after I noticed two reviewers (DOPES!) chose to give the OS one star, not because there's a problem with the OS, but because they didn't get theirs yet (WAAA). I bought the family pack because I have four computers to update. The upgrade was a snap on all four machines. And this is a great operating system. I especially like spot light, it makes finding anything on your computer a piece of cake. They have also enhanced the creation of pdf files which I use a lot to store email and web pages. I think that at least in my case I'm noticing a speed increase. And now we know that this OS has been designed to run on an Intel chip as well as the IBM chip. So don't worry, be happy and get this upgrade. 5 stars (Well done Apple!) - Although the installation was a tad shaky, Tiger runs beautifully on my Mac Mini 1.42 GHz 512 meg. I am completely in love with Dashboard- new widgets come out every day, and although they aren't all useful, they are all a lot of fun to use. I have yet to use every feature, but I do recommend Tiger. It is a wonderful upgrade from Panther, and has a lot of room to grow. Apple, I salute you. ...

SuSE Linux Professional 9 3

2 stars (Very disapointed in this one...) - SuSE 9.1 pro was very nice which prompted Me to check out SuSE 9.3 pro. I was surprised to find out most of the standard features in the command prompt were taken out by Novell. Pine Mutt fd_locate_pkg apache, now has apache2 which no one uses nmap lynx Some other stuff also, some you can directly find the download and ./configure ; make while others SuSE requires many rpm dependancies which starts to become a bit of a headache. A few other 'Novell Nightmare' touch ups include ssh which is a bit of a nightmare using their version to tunnel and network with, and their ssl and apache2.conf files If you are a KDE and/or Gnome user, and like to chat with a friend on msn messenger thru Gaim or Kopete, good luck keeping O.SSL updated. I never had this problem before on Fedora RedHat or Gentoo Alot of dependant rpm's needed. Being this rpm dependant may as well use fedora Red Hat. At least they have a good rpm manager. I can understand wanting to simplifing things but they shouldnt have dropped their 'personal edition' as in 9.1 build, and make their 'pro' watered down. The sad thing is, on Novell's offical site for 9.3 they admit to taking out these tools and programs from the shell or 'personally customising' to give it their own touch, which helped screw up alot. They did however add alot of unneeded fluff which you dont need with linux unless you just want to chew up cpu's like the pretty menus and such, but if your going with a pro linux build your just in the command prompt most the time anyhow. I do hope their new 10.x build is better but Im not going to waist My time to check it out. Going back to R.H. I did give it two stars because if your a home user and nothing more, the 9.3 is great! But if all your going to do is home use and not program or admin, go with something cheaper thats set up more specifically for a home user such as Xandros linux made by Debian which is also a bit cheaper for th...

Linspire Five 0 CNR Edition

4 stars (Do not but this product from Amazon or anyone else except Linspire!) - The product is great and loads in about 20 min. (except for the CNR activation). It is simpler to use than the latest versions of Windows. If you buy this product from Linspire, it seems that the activation of CNR is automatic. If you buy it from anyone else you will think you are trying to activate a MICROSOFT PRODUCT OR WORSE. Then after I jumped through all of the hoops, I get this email from the Linspire Team: "It's been several days since you've signed up, and we've noticed that you haven't yet purchased the CNR Service." A good product - just don't buy it from here! 3 stars (3 stars because it has bash, the rest I don't like) - As far as linux goes I would not recommend this distro. reason 1- It is to dumbed down to be all that good,It is harder to work with then suse or mandrake. reason 2- It was ok for them to call themselves lindows to upset microsoft but now they are mad because a distro out there is called freespire. come on people get a life, that is what linux has been about sharing the code for the better of everyone. reason 3- They charge for what most other distros offer for free to me they are too close to microsoft. now for the positive notes. 1 bash is still the login shell and that alone offers a lot of power. 2 kde is still a great desktop to work with. 3 the most important thing it is still linux so that is still better than M$ or apple. But if you are really looking for a easy to use linux distro without all the hassel, of cost get mandriva or suse, even debian and it's many followers is a better chioce. As for linspire I am glade they are trying to make an easy to use desktop to challange Microcrap, but they are going about it the wrong way. 2 stars (Why are you paying for free software??) - Linspire had a great idea: to bring Linux to the masses who are tired of the OS from Redmond. Great...that'll work. But the way in which Linspire has tried to achieve this...

Linspire Five 0

3 stars (Imprisoned Linux: Good for $ Novice, Not So Much For Everyone Else) - Quick Summary: Linspire is a linux based OS that provides an easy means of converting from a Windows platform. Installing and getting application software is made easy through a database named CNR (Click-N-Run) and installing those programs is streamlined. It is great for people unfamiliar with Linux but may not be the best distro for people looking to become knowledgable in Linux. There are other Linux OS's that are free of charge, more open (less restraints) and have a number of forums for support. Linspire charges you for software that may be free! outside of Linspire's Click-N-Pay system. Linspire comments out or limits package repositories - which is essentially trying to make you use their way of doing things - and make an educated decision before purchase. If you want the easiest possible transition from Windows to Linux and don't mind the restraints - go Linspire. More Details: PRO's: If you're a beginner to Linux - don't know much about Operating Systems - and don't plan on learning a whole lot about them - then Linspire is probably your best choice. It offers the stability and security of a Linux system with the familiar Windows atmosphere. Install is easy and getting around will be as well. You can find a lot of software in their Click-N-Run database and program install is painless. If your familiar with Linux or OS's - or you are willing to learn and you will work around the restraints in Linspire - then go for it! BUT... CON's: If you want to learn Linux, tweak the system and enjoy the freedom that is open source OS - then you should check out Ubuntu or SUSE. Both of those are free for download and install (SUSE will even mail you an install CD!). Linspire charges ~$50 for their OS and they keep on charging for all kinds of things. The aformentioned CNR (Click-N-Run) has a lot of the programs which you pay for that are free otherwise! So you pay for a Linux OS (rather tha...

Mac OS X 10 4 Tiger DVD

5 stars (Sleek Tiger) - The finest OS to date. I was haapy with Paanthere, but Tiger is a steop above. 5 stars (From PC to Mac forever, this OS is amazing.) - I have used Windows for years and used a Mac at my work, I always liked the way the Mac handled graphics and also appreciated their ease of use. Mac OS X is so simple to use compared to Windows XP, it is by far the best OS I have ever used. I have not run into one single glitch, my powerbook has not crashed on me once. It had crashed on me a few times with OS 9, but this one seems to be a lot more stable. I like the dashboard also, you can quickly check the weather, stocks, dictionary or calendar all with a push of a button and built into the OS. You can also download many others for free from the Apple website. Itunes is a great application also and it is something I use all day long. Safari is far more superior in just about every-way compared to Microsoft Explorer, in fact it would take to long to list the benefits. I also liked the ability to run OS 9 in classic mode, so you can keep all your older software and still use them within OS X. If you are sick and tired of the Windows fatal exception errors or sending Windows error reports, then buy yourself an Apple and enjoy stress free living with OS X. 1 stars (Stick with Panther) - I get the spinning beachball and Microsoft Office application crashes about as often as I did in 10.1! I reformatted my hard disk and reinstalled Panther after trying the 10.4.1 and 10.4.2 updates. For my needs Panther (10.3.8+) is a much more robust and stable operating system. ...
