Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2

1 stars (Awful) - This operating system was one of the most unsatisfactory I have ever used--including DOS, Win 3.1, Windows 95 and Windows 98. Aside from being incompatible with older hardware, XP Home Edition crashes frequently--particularly if you like to work with several windows open at once. Most important, the program is highly susceptible to viruses and hackers. Preventing these two problems requires expensive add-on software and hardware. True enough, the built-in firewall OUGHT to work. But in my case, hackers got in anyway. I had to hire an expensive data recovery guru--another story in itself. Even reinstalling the program did not solve the problem. My computer was completely compromised. I was eventually forced to junk the machine. Even installing service pack 2 did not help. After my dreadful experience with XP Home Edition, I have sworn off Windows forever. Mac and Linux are both far superior. The latter also works alongside Windows, but why anyone would want Windows on their machine is beyond me. 4 stars (I'm so glad I upgraded) - Yes, I know this isn't the "Upgrade" version. I found this for a lot less at CompUSA and I bought the new computer version when I upgraded from a 10 to a 40 GB hard drive, so it was infact just like "a new computer" when I installed this. First of all, let me say that I am very glad I bought this. XP has taken care of pretty much all of the computer nightmares that I had with ME. The only complaint I have is with battery life. XP uses up more battery life and so my laptop doesn't run on the battery for as long as it's suppossed to. Also, the Windows Firewall that comes with Service Pack 2 doesn't work that well. It's better than nothing (I think). My dad had horrible problems with his computer before I convinced him to purchase the Norton Personal Firewall 2004. 3 stars (Its a Microsoft product) - Windows is good for several things. But being flexible is NOT one of them. The issue with this product is you can't use...

Rosetta Stone Spanish Latin America Level 1 Win-Mac Personal Edition

2 stars (It may be effective for some, but it is not the program for me) - Rosetta Stone was the first Spanish language program that I had tried. (I have previously studied French, Latin, and ancient Greek.) I ordered it from the company directly but returned it after about a month. It has some interesting unique features but it was not for me. Here are the positives: 1. The pictures are colorful and memorable and will help you learn many words quickly. 2. There is an interesting effective feature which allows you to listen to a word or phrase in Spanish, record your voice, and playback. Then a scale tells you how close your voice came to that of a native speaker. But I would not spend extensive time repeating the same word or phrase because it is very difficult to meet their standard for "native speaker." These are the negatives: 1. There is a great emphasis on sentences that are not practical for an adult tourist, business person, or employee wanting to speak Spanish with native speakers. In addition, most of the sentences have verbs in the present progressive tense; there is not enough practice in all the Spanish verb tenses. There are many sentences in Spanish about boys under the table, girls walking, women waving, and men falling. 2. Because I work at a computer all day at work, I am not motiviated to sit at a computer for long during my spare time. Because I am eager to learn useful Spanish quickly, Pimsleur is more effective for me. I can listen to the CDs in my car or at home. In addition, I have learned more sentences that I may want to use such as how to find a bathroom, restaurant, or pharmacy; or how to order food. Rosetta Stone may be a good program for a child who likes to use the computer or an individual who has never studied Romance languages before. 5 stars (rosetta stone spanish) - this program is wonderfull for anyone that want to learn any spanish.I seen many other programs but by far this is the best.it cost more b...

Xandros Linux Desktop OS 3 Standard Edition

4 stars (Finally, a useable Linux for the not-as-geeky) - I have always considered myself a computer geek. However, when it comes to Linux, I just can't comprehend much. Xandros is the only Linux that I have tried that is easy to install and configure. I tried Ubuntu and with one computer the monitor was a bunch of garble and on the other computer I could not figure out how to hook up the wireless internet connection (I read a lot of forums online and just got a headache looking at them.) With Xandros, the partitioning and dual boot setup is easy, I configured my wireless card with WEP with no problem. Compared to Windows, this OS is noticeable slower. Slower to boot up, but not unbearable and opening Firefox takes even longer than Windows, which is pretty slow. Open Office is a painfully slow program now matter what. Grant it, I am trying it out on a older 1ghz system but it took over 15 seconds to open the spreadsheet application. The choice of programs are somewhat limited, but useful. I am happy using this in a dual boot configuration. I have programs that I use for a security system and I know they won't come out with a Linux version, so I have to stick with XP for that. For web surfing and general use however, you can save yourself the headaches of viruses and spyware because it would be virtually impossible to get on Linux. 5 stars (A MUST for beginning Linux users) - If you don't have any Linux experience or knowledge and want an EASY transition...Xandros 3.0 is the way to go. I disagree with the previous review of 3 stars. This is not a limited version. Upgrades can be done. If your a heavy, Linux geek, you would not use Xandros anyway! But if your a home user looking for a quick, affordable and VERY FRIENDLY product...go with Xandros. Xandros has made the specific effort of trying to be just like Windows XP using the Linux kernel. It succeeds! If you want a more full featured version, try Xandros 3.0 Business Edition. More than likely, if your the typ...

Rosetta Stone Italian Level 1 - 2 Win-Mac Personal Edition

5 stars (Easy Italian) - My husband and I have been taking Italian for several months and were looking for something we could do at home that would enhance our classroom experience. The Rosetta Stone program is so much more than we ever expected. We easily spend an hour or two a day studying Italian. We wouldn't give up our live Italian instructor, but this program easily leads us through building language skills in a way that nothing else we've ever tried could. We also love the various ways of teaching, hearing, seeing, writing, reading, virtually all of the ways you need to learn any language. Since we're going to be permanently relocating to Italy next year, it's important for us to learn the language as quickly and efficiently as possible. Rosetta Stone provides all of the tools we need to do that. 4 stars (Great but will not stand alone) - I haven't gotten that far in it but I'm far enough to see the strengths and weaknesses. On the plus side, what I did learn is really well ingrained. The picture/word association really works - I find when I see something in my daily life that I have seen in the rosetta stone program, the italian word just pops into my head on it's own. There is no "translation" process like you ordinarily go through with language tapes. On the downside, anything that does not show well in a photograph doesn't fit the mechanics of the course. Words like "who, what, where, why, how" greetings "hello, goodbye" abstract nouns like "love, wisdom, pain, happiness, etc) subjective adjectives like "pretty, kind, cold, risky, etc.)and many verbs like "to know, think, want, wish, prefer, etc" and relative modifiers (more, most, least, -er, -est) are important parts of daily conversation and just don't fit the image/word association method. I think this is barrier to total fluency by the rosetta stone method. However, it's a great vocabulary builder, boasting 40,000 words by completion of the course. Not all the words will be useful in coversatio...

Rosetta Stone French Level 1 - 2 Win-Mac Personal Edition

5 stars (Excellent) - I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase of Rosetta Stone French 1 and 2. It is by far the best language course I have ever had the pleasure of studying. It is most complete in it's scope of study in that you have the opportunity to hear, read, write and repeat the French you are learning in each lesson module. I find the feedback on my pronunciation most useful; it's also a lot of fun! Highly recommended. 2 stars (too much hype and overpriced) - This is good for learning vocabulary, but NOT good at all for learning how to speak french. In fact, you wind up speaking poor disjointed french as a result of this. It is a good concept that unfortunately is more hype than any good. The price is rediculous considering other better products exist out there that are at lower prices (although they won't claim to have been used by NASA). To me, this is just another churned out, language product, created from a template, and to a budget. They have obviously good marketing skills, etc, but this is definately not created for the customer, ... I think the best word to describe this product is: gimick. 5 stars (I will tell you all about this program,so read this reveiw) - The first the you may notice is how high the price is. Well, it is absolutly worth every penny. If you complete both level one and two you'll be equipped to go to france. Now some of you that have read previous reveiws heard that you need a headset to do a part of the course, and that absolutly true. with the headset come a little microphone. A native speaker will say a word then you will say it back. You immediatly get feedback on how you did. It tells you how close you came to sound like the native speaker. So if you keep practicing that you will get closer and closer to speak the accent. And this is a must. You must be able to speak the french accent for it to be totally complete ,and thats what the headset is for . it will make you master the accent. so you may be saying where do...

SUSE LINUX Professional 9 3 Update

5 stars (I love it) - I use to be a Mandrake fan, But I really love this SUSE 9.3 the best. Evrything works and did on th first install. I am using it now and no blue screens of death. For you new linux users, don't believe the hype about Mandrake being more user friendly. SUSE 9.3 is a great Linux Distribution. 5 stars (Very complete -- full features) - I have been using SuSE Linux since version 7.3. I have upgraded the 7.3 to 9.0 the last time, now 9.3 looked very promising. Installation is a breeze. Lots of software including development tools, games, and server functionality. I have been a happy SuSE user for over four years now. I hope they keep up their good work since they got acquired by Novell and won't make major upsetting changes for their licensing and usage. Corporate greed, you never know... I am an avid Microsoft developer, administrator, and user (MCSE, MCSA, MCDBA), but if you want to get into Linux world, I assure you that you would not be disappointed if you get SuSE Linux 9.3. As they say, "Have a lot Fun!" Cheers! - Baskin 3 stars (Not up to the old SuSe standards) - I've been running various versions of SuSe Linux for several years now. It seems a shame that their level of quality appears to be suffering now that they are working for the Novell bottom line. I do professional development, and while the distribution is relatively OK, it was surprising to find that the development system as distributed doesn't seem to know much about threads (certainly not the debugger). If all you want is a client side system, then this distro will probably work for you. If you are more serious and in development, try another distro. Even Fedora Core 4 looks better. ...

Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 Win-Mac

4 stars (Still the best of the WYSIWYG field) - Dreamweaver consistently ranks high in the field of WYSIWYG web site editors. This release does not stray from this position. Considering GoLive and FrontPage are the current competition, it is not hard to see why (will be interesting to see what comes out with Microsoft Expressions Quartz). As with previous versions, Dreamweaver 8 has the standard Dreamweaver interface. When you install, you have the option of setting up like a developer or setting up like a designer. It is not as easy to change the scheme (or not as evident), but this is not a major deal as a single developer rarely changes the setup of his development environment. Dreamweaver 8 touts itself as the king of CSS and it has certainly made some wonderful inroads. By default, you can create styles in a page or in a stylesheet. Unfortunately, it falls a little short in allowing you to change your mind in this place, as well. It would be nice, for example, to drag tested styles from a test page up to the stylesheet. Instead, I have to manually cut and paste or recreate styles. Yes, this is minor, but can't someone make a tool that does this? I would also love to see a tool that recognizes I have already created a style with the same feature or allows me to use the standard font and paragraph changes and automatically create a style. But, I digress, there is no tool that does that ... yet. The CSS Styles tab gives you a great way of getting down to the properties of a particular CSS style. If you do not want to bring up the designer, which is how you normally create your style, you simply add properties to the style in the CSS Styles tab. Very nice feature. A little different than the properties view in MS products, but much more compact. Dreamweaver 8 is better at .NET development than FrontPage. It also allows a variety of other development paradigms: ASP (either VBScript or JavaScript), ASP.NET (C# or VB.NET), ColdFusion, JSP and PHP (with MySQL). Thi...

Rosetta Stone Chinese Level 1 - 2 Win-Mac Personal Edition

4 stars (Very good if you are a somewhat advanced) - As most of the reviewers have mentioned, this course is not for the beginner, even though Rosetta Stone advertises it differently. It can be very useful to you under the following conditions: 1) You already have an understanding of Chinese grammar, so that the sometimes very complex sentences even in early lessons won't overwhelm you. In turn you will profit immensely from the amount of vocabulary you can learn in a short time. 2) You don't expect to get conversational proficiency. Rosetta Stone teaches you to describe pictures, something which is done in many real-life language courses I have visited. One could say it is just a concentrated form of this particular exercise. That said, it will enhance your ability to describe and to link words to objects and anchor that link in your brain. For me that method works much better than vocab lists, even in a flash card form. Especially, I don't know a better way to learn modifiers, an essential part of Chinese grammar. 3) You always have a dictionary at hand to look up words because the programm does not give you any translations. 4) You don't expect it to teach you how to write Chinese characters. This is always something you have to do on your own, a computer cannot really help you. By changing between Pinyin and character script (traditional and simplified) in Rosetta you can learn how to recognize characters, but I think of it more of a vocabulary builder. Also, if much text is displayed, characters tend to get too small in order to be recognized. 5)You see it as one more tool in your collection of Chinese learning materials. In my opinion for Westerners Chinese can only be learned this way, you can't rely on a single book to provide everything. It gets 4 stars because of the price which I find outrageous. Given the fact that the Chinese version is merely an adaptation of the general Rosetta Stone system, it should go for no more than $150 both levels. So tr...

PC DOS 2000

5 stars (DOS still has a future!!) - There is still a place for DOS in the computing world - older systems, with limited resources, that are doing basic word processing, database management, text-only Internet access, and telemetry support - and PC DOS 2000 is the perfect OS to keep these machines chugging along ... Y2K compliancy, new programming, ease of use, and many utilities. Just a comment on the Warning! review by Dr. Ronald Gibbons - IBM makes it very clear that they do NOT recommend using PC DOS 2000 with Win95 or Win98. The following is quoted from IBM's FAQ page "Can I run PC DOS 2000 with Windows 95 / Windows 98?" "Unlike Windows 3.x which requires a separate operating system (DOS), Windows 95 and Windows 98 have combined DOS and Windows into an integrated product. It is not recommended that you install PC DOS 2000 on a system running Windows 95 or Windows 98." 2 stars (Warning!) - The product MIGHT be good, but I never had the opportunity to use it. The program loaded witjout problem, but then I received a message indicating that PC DOS 2000 does not support the version of windows that I have loaded. I have Windows 95 and MS Office. No matter what I did I could not load thoses programs, nor could I return to DOS 6.0. In the end I had to reformat Drive C: and completely reload all of my software. There should have been a warning about which versions of software that PC DOS 2000 supports. 5 stars (DOS is not dead) - PC-DOS 2000 is a minor upgrade to PC-DOS 7.0, the version that came out as Windows 95 was released. This version is Y2K compliant and supports the new Euro currency symbol. It comes with many features not associated with DOS such as pen support and PCMCIA support. It also comes with a GUI backup program, Stacker 4.0, IBM antivirus, REXX programming and a plethora of utilities. Runs on anything from an 8088 upwards. I use it on my laptop with Windows for Workgroups 3.11. Even though it's a 486 I ...

Macromedia Flash Pro 8 Win-Mac

5 stars (Flash 8, Fantastic !) - I am so happy with the new Flash 8, and am even more delighted that Macromedia re-introduced the 'normal mode' (although not called normal mode anymore) for designers. They have also introduced a new way of skinning video, and I absolutely love the new On2 VP6 video codec. There are so many improvements from MX 2004 that I would be writing forever to tell you about them. As a senior designer who has been using flash since Flash 3, I think that Flash 8 Pro is the best ever yet! Well done Macromedia. ...

Mac OS X 10 4 Tiger DVD

5 stars (Sleek Tiger) - The finest OS to date. I was haapy with Paanthere, but Tiger is a steop above. 5 stars (From PC to Mac forever, this OS is amazing.) - I have used Windows for years and used a Mac at my work, I always liked the way the Mac handled graphics and also appreciated their ease of use. Mac OS X is so simple to use compared to Windows XP, it is by far the best OS I have ever used. I have not run into one single glitch, my powerbook has not crashed on me once. It had crashed on me a few times with OS 9, but this one seems to be a lot more stable. I like the dashboard also, you can quickly check the weather, stocks, dictionary or calendar all with a push of a button and built into the OS. You can also download many others for free from the Apple website. Itunes is a great application also and it is something I use all day long. Safari is far more superior in just about every-way compared to Microsoft Explorer, in fact it would take to long to list the benefits. I also liked the ability to run OS 9 in classic mode, so you can keep all your older software and still use them within OS X. If you are sick and tired of the Windows fatal exception errors or sending Windows error reports, then buy yourself an Apple and enjoy stress free living with OS X. 1 stars (Stick with Panther) - I get the spinning beachball and Microsoft Office application crashes about as often as I did in 10.1! I reformatted my hard disk and reinstalled Panther after trying the 10.4.1 and 10.4.2 updates. For my needs Panther (10.3.8+) is a much more robust and stable operating system. ...

1 stars (stupid and ridiculous) - why? cause it chokes up PROCESSING and RAM that's why! its full of bugs and freezes frequently. [...] if you want stability get win2000. its ridiculous how they keep releasing new operating systems every year.
