The Art of Teaching Writing

3 stars (Review of The Art of Teaching Writing ) - Calkins book was an easy, yet informative read. As a education student, I learned a lot about how to motivate children to want to write. Calkins techniques are practical and simple. It seems that the book could be geared to not just elementary grades, but also to middle school ages. The examples of student writings were great. I will definitely be re-reading this book when I begin teaching in a couple of years. 4 stars (The Art of Teaching and Writing) - In the book The Art of Teaching and Writing, Lucy McCormick Calkins discusses various types of ways on how to instruct children to write efficient papers. The techniques that she illustrates in her book mostly came from her original ideas. These effective ideas could be used while instructing children or when teacher workshops are set up. Calkins writing style was very easy to read. She sets various examples to help illustrate her teaching techniques. One issue that I had with this book was the fact that the topics were too broad. Another problem that I have is that this book is not appropriate for elementary teachers. It could possible be used for middle school students but it is more suitable for teachers who are instructing High School Students. Overall, I feel that this book was organized very well and was easy to read. 3 stars (Good Book for Elementary School Teachers) - The Art of Teaching and Writing by Lucy Calkins is a book that I would recommend for new Elementary School Teachers. This book makes an attempt at illustrating how teachers can create creative writing lesson plans for young students. I must admit the size of this book was a little intimidating. It isn't really the type of book that you would read straight through, but perhaps skim through picking out material that pertains to what you want to convey to your students. Heath, a reflective practitioner of both human nature and schooling, provides an in-depth view of communities which epitomize the struggle for such power. In her ethnographic study of Trackton and Roadville, Heath lays bare the socializing process of children through words. The discontinuity between home and school is disturbing; a realization that students who do not fit the traditional way of schooling are left behind. Clearly illustrated is the need for teachers and students to bridge the gap which exists in relation to both language and culture, for without this effort some students will never acquire the power needed to take control of their education or pursue opportunities from which they have previously been excluded. This is must reading for student ethnographers, doctoral students, and those dedicated to school reform, particularly those in the areas of diversity in public schools, and language. This extraordinary book compares favorably to "Growing Up Literate: Learning From Inner-City Families" by Denny Taylor & Catherine Dorsey-Gaines. 3 stars (A Teacher's View) - Teaching in a high school with a large number of minority children can be challenging. After reading this book, recommended by the debate teacher, I feel that I am better prepared. This book is an excellent resource for those wanting to understand the student from a background different form their own. If you plan to work in public school, this book is a must-read. Transforming the Difficult Child

5 stars (A Must for Every Parent and Teacher) - This book absolutely transformed my relationship with my difficult teenager. We had been stuck in a pattern of disappointment and poor school performance for years. This book was the missing ingredient and now his father and I are proud and completely hopeful for a boy who was headed down the wrong path. 5 stars (Busymomof4) - My oldest son is 17 and has been displaying defiant and baffling behavior since he was in 2nd grade. We have been to numerous counselors and psychologists, and no one could ever explain his behavior to me. He is an under-energized kid with Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and now in drug treatment. THANK YOU HOWARD GLASSER, for the first time I feel like I understand my kid and I have a direction to go in when he finishes treatment. I have three other children, who are not currently experiencing any difficulty, but are all highly energetic. My 4-yr old is eerily similar in lots of ways to his big brother. I am using the positive remarks and it has worked tremendously in the last few days to help reduce bad habits like screaming in the car, leaving the dinner table continuously, and ignoring directions. I feel absolutely wonderful and optimistic that I can handle my older teenager now. 5 stars (The greatest book on parenting ) - This book teaches you a new way of life in a busy world with our kids. 5 stars (Interesting, practical intro to ed'l psych'y for teachers) - In a highly readable manner, Jeanne Ormrod introduces educational psychology for K-12 teachers. She incorporates many of the learning principles and teaching practices her text espouses by using colorfully illustrated and highlighted multiple formats throughout, such as summaries, case studies, classroom applications and examples, emphasis of major points, and learning exercises. The three major sections address learner diversity, how students learn, and becoming an effective teacher. She outlines seven themes for effective learning which she addresses in every section: interaction, information processing, relevance, classroom climate, challenge, expectations, and diversity. The text cites educational research throughout (there is an index with 44 pages of references) yet the paragraphs have a readibility and easy flow to them. Ormrod's chapters consistently address her goals as an author: focusing on cores principles, relating them to our own behavior, processing them effectively and applying them in the classroom. The phrase "interesting textbook," usually an oxymoron, in this case is well-deserved praise. ...
