Central Park- An American Masterpiece- A Comprehensive History of the Nation-s First Urban Park

5 stars (A Gorgeous Book Commemorating America's 1st Public Park) - Commemorating the 150th anniversary of Central Park, photographer and historian Sara Cedar Miller celebrates the aesthetic, cultural and historic significance of America's first public park with the book "Central Park, An American Masterpiece." This is the park's definitive illustrated history, and offers some of the most gorgeous photographs I have seen on the subject - a difficult task given the number of pictures that have been drawn, painted and photographed of the Manhattan landmark. The book includes over 200 color illustrations, original plans and drawings alongside modern photos, giving the viewer/reader an historical perspective. Accompanying Ms. Miller's work, portraying the park throughout the seasons, is a well written text which highlights the conception and creation of the park and its art and architecture. This is a big, beautiful picture book that would make a wonderful addition to any home or library. It's a wonderful gift idea. I know as I have given it numerous times. Ms. Miller is the parks official historian and photographer and has been since the mid-1980s. JANA 5 stars (A book as worthy as the park it celebrates) - Sara Miller has put together an outstanding book: a book as vast and detailed as the Great Park itself. For those not familiar with the park and its history, this is an invaluable introduction to the political, demographical, economic and, especially, aesthetic thinking that went into the creation of 800 acres of gorgeous park space in the middle of Manhattan. For those seasoned veterans of NYC history, this is a welcome reminder of the enormous vision and efforts of Calvert Vaux and Fredrick Law Olmsted, as they conceived the park. Nota Bene: A lot of books have gorgeous photos but the print job is miserable ... Others have high-qualtity prints but the photos aren't that interesting ... This book has glorious prints and an expert print job. Pick up this book. Rocco...

The Surfer-s Guide to Costa Rica

5 stars (Excellent book) - this is a great book if you are going to costa rica, it has great detail and maps, nothing to detailed but it tells you what maps to buy, would reccomend 5 stars (If you surf, don't even stop to think about it...just buy it) - It's nearly impossible to put a price on the value of the information in this book if you surf. So at $21, it's an absolute steal. The book is simply crammed with detailed, up to date information on where to surf, stay and eat in Costa Rica. And in a country that's tough to get around, Parise's information can save you tons of wasted travel time. I can't recommend this book enough if you're planning a trip to Costa Rica to surf. Trust me...you'll be thankful to have this incredibly informational resource in your possession. 4 stars (indispensable for the serious tico surf traveller!) - it is written in common parlance, and therefore it is easy to understand. I can tell when reading this that the author speaks from experience. he mentions many things to avoid, and important handy tips that will make your surfing stay much more enjoyable. he also realizes the importance of getting as much "surf time" as possible by delineating routes that will minimize the time driving, and maximize time in the tube. also it is written in a lighthearted fashion that reminds you that you are on a surf trip, and helps you forget the stresses of being in completely different country. on the downside, there are a few comments in this book that are not the most considerate. for example, this book somehow assumes that the reader is a man and tackles the subjects of jock itch, balls (testicles), and lugging your girlfriend/wife around. a female friend who surfs found this aspect a tad inconsiderate. however, these trespasses are a mere annoyance, which does not discredit this from being an overall very good book. ...

Chemistry- The Central Science- Ninth Edition

1 stars (Not for beginners) - This text makes chemistry complicated! There is a constant need to flip back and forth through the book to collect information needed for problem solving, and that includes the periodic table. The table in the front of the book does not even have the charges of elements. This book was written by professors for professors and not new students to chemistry. $ 150.00 of worthless 4 stars (Easy to read, excellent problems, solutions manual valuable) - I bought the book to review General Chemistry that I took many years ago because I am taking Organic Chemistry this Fall. The book covers General Chemistry quite well. It is highly readable and develops ideas progressively. The reader is never faced with a term or concept that has not already been explained. The back references interspersed throughout will save the reader many hours of looking into the index to find a topic that was covered earlier in the book. I also purchased the solutions manual and was generally pleased. Apart from the occasional error , the manual provides solutions to EVERY problem which is an enormous help. The book does have a weakness which is relatively unimportant to most readers including this one. Chapters 24 and 25 are devoted to Coordination Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. In these chapters, it almost seems as if the text was written ( or edited ) by a person or group other than those who produced the first 23 chapters. The book no longer serves the reader and you will be forced ( without too much consternation ) to purchase a proper Organic Chemistry text. The authors might have done better to lighten the load in every undergraduate's backpack and simply delete Chapters 24 and 25. 5 stars (Simple and Straightforward) - This book gives a great overview of freshman chemistry. I bought it as a reference to use teaching high school chemistry. I love the illustrations and the way the author makes complex issues simple while providing just enough material to ram...

5 stars (A 'must' reference for any serious boater) - The 2002 bicentennial edition of Bowditch's American Practical Navigator is a weighty tome prepared and published by the national Imagery and Mapping Agency in Maryland. Packed with international and foreign nautical charts, details on Logan navigation, discussions of navigation regulations and ocean chemistry and properties, and logarithm charts, The American Practical Navigator is a 'must' reference for any serious boater, and for libraries where boaters congregate. 1 stars (No vessel should be without one.) - More than 30 years ago a salty old sea dog who had made his way from the Faeroes to the South China Sea and back, told me, "Son, no vessel should ever be without a Bowditch. There's more in this book than you can ever use." For the past 30 years I have borrowed and begged and thumbed through other's copies of Bowditch, but until I took the time to peruse my own copy, I never realized how much this one volume actually contained. Primarily nautical, the wealth of material covered has much wider applications than sailing and navigation: weather observation, cloud types, winds, conversion tables, logarithms, sight reductions. Whether you are a professional mariner, a weekend sailboater, or a landlubber, the old sea dog's words ring true; "There's more in this book than you can ever use." 5 stars (King of navigation) - Although it appears intimidating, it's actually quite readable. It happens also to be the very pinnacle of all marine navigation guides; all others refer to it and every navigator/pilot should own a copy. But (a) it's enormous in both physical volume and weight and (b) it does get updated. What to do? ... A search on "nga bowditch" will provide you with the current pdf version, chapter by chapter on the web. ...
