Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association- Fifth Edition

4 stars (Important but not compelling) - I understand that the rigors of academia require exhaustive research and documentation, however, that is no excuse for writing which is too dense, difficult to read, or not engaging to the reader. If more "academics" would learn how to write like real people instead of researchers, perhaps their messages would be communicated more effectively... and maybe people would LEARN more. Isn't that the point? There is no excuse for bad writing -- even if you are a genius! 3 stars (It's really tough but you will need it!) - I tried for a long time to deny using this book, even though I bought it off a course list and had it on my shelf. After being told several times by professors that my documents needed to be in APA style, with no quick description offered, I have been forced to go in and learn the format. It's a bit like learning a foreign language but since I've learned to use it, it's come up again, and again, and again, so I'm glad I finally did it. Check out "The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book" as well. It's a fun read, based on sound research, that let me test my EQ online. Boy, did I need my EQ skills while learning APA style! 4 stars (More User-Friendly Than Widely Acknowledged) - It's difficult to understand why so many reviewers find the APA style so difficult. Perhaps this is due to having weaned my teeth on APA during my Ph.D. Rather than finding the style convoluted, confusing, or inconsistent, I find it as clear as the equally valuable "Chicago Manual of Style." In particular, the APA's method of in-text notes makes it easy for the writer and reader to document and locate source materials. Once you grasp the basic premise of footnoting and endnoting, the overall style is coherent. Besides, if you are going to write in the social science field, like it or not, APA style is here to stay--so you may as well learn it and use it. Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends...

Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment

5 stars (Vital for Comp) - Simply necessary to understanding doctor reports. Only odd part is how the "patient" in the pictures looks like Saddam Hussein. Maybe he's filing a claim too. 5 stars (A must for professionals in disability law and medicine) - The 5th Edition is the Rosetta Stone for evaluating permanent impairment. It is invaluable in workers' compensation, where many states, provinces and several countries either mandate its use or treat this work as an authorativie source of impairment evaluation. It may also come to have utility in ADA cases, especially with its emphasis on activities of daily living, and as a predicate to demonstrating the significance or insignificance of an impairment's effect on major life activities after Toyota vs Williams. The vision chapter represents the AMA's first major, published revision to the science and knowledge of eye impairments since the early 1900's. 5 stars (Nice Charts) - Although my copy came with 10 pages of errata sheets stuck in the front of it (presumably cured in the 5th version), I still got a lot out of reading through this book. The descriptions of impairment are de regeur reading for coming up with convincing settlement demands for soft tissue injuries. Someone's shoulder hurts? How do you say they have lost 20% of their upper body use as a result? Why not 90% of one finger, 50% of one hand, and 80% of one arm? Multiple impairments like these can be descriptively segmented to more fully elaborate what a patient is feeling, and how they are limited in daily activities. Both the plaintiff bar and the insurance community are well-served by this book. As for the medical accuracy of it, I'll take the AMA's word for it. ...

Desk Reference to the Diagnostic Criteria From DSM-IV-TR Desk Reference to the Diagnostic Criteria

2 stars (A Great Manual To Promote Diseases !!) - The DSM IV-TR is a great book to promote diseases that fit the armaments of medications that the pharmaceutical companies would like physicians to use. The problem with the whole DSM serie is that it is mostly subjective and based on speculation. The DSM is not based on hard empirical evidence but on a consensual system by few well-connected psychiatrists on the payroll of the pharmaceutical companies. These same psychiatrists also happen to belong to the American Psychiatric Association and/or work as hired guns/consultants for the APA, which also happens to receive yearly funding or gifts (disguised as continuing education) from the pharmaceutical companies $500,000 worth. The whole process is deceitful and shameful!!! 5 stars (Student to Counselor) - I'll be the first to admit, learning the criteria for all the diagnoses is difficult if not close to impossible. While the DSM is very helpful with all of its background, cultural, and statistics loaded information, it isn't essential for those already in the field. You already had to learn the basics before you completed your degree or licensure program. Now the concern is time and effort. This little guide is easy to navigate through, light-weight, and the spiral bound makes it easy to turn pages to compare between a couple of different classifications (be it BiPolar I Disorder or BiPolar II Disorder). I use this guide everyday at work - and leave that big book sitting on the shelf. 2 stars (format problem) - nice and handy, but i don't like the spiral format. pages are flimsy and begin to rip and shear off shortly after purchase even with careful moderate use. just a waste of money. the only difference between the quick and the desk is the inclusion of the coding chart with the desk reference. ...

MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers- Sixth Edition

5 stars (MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, Sixth Edition) - This book will take you step by step on how to write a research paper. The topics are listed at the beginning of each parragraph. Some of the paragraphs have the main points and highlights at the end. It's a great book to have handy. 5 stars (MLA Handbook for writers of Research Papers, sixth editions) - An excellent overall guide for writing research papers. I highly recommend this product for all college and college-bound students. What a remarkable way to display and work with the English Language. 5 stars (Must have...) - This is a very important handbook for English Graduate students, especially since professors expect only the best papers from their students at this level. The layout is very simple and it covers almost everything. I like how it goes into punctuation issues; I always have trouble remembering when to use semi-colons versus commas. I'm probably still using them wrong. There are a few grammer issues I wish they'd include, such as "who" versus "whom," but overall most everything is covered. ...

Concise Rules Of Apa Style Concise Rules of the American Psychological Association APA Style

2 stars (My Review) - Some peopel may find this book useful. I am just begining to learn the APA format and I did not find this book to be user friendly. I have had better information given to me from handouts from other books. 5 stars (Critical Information for Writing for the APA Publications) - The first question you'd have to ask about this book is Why would the American Psychological Association have a style guide. The answer is that the APA Style is the definitive guide to the style that the APA wants to see in their publications and this style is also used by a number of other publications that have adopted the APA Style. Among the critical points of the APA Style is how to construct an error-free reference list crediting all sources properly and avoiding all charges of plagiarism. This has become extremely critical in today's world where any research seems subject to actively looking for any way they can discredit someone else rather than do their own work. In addition the style book is an authoritative guide to how best to present the ideas and data that is so hard to gather. Being able to present data in a way that is understandable to the reader is perhaps the most difficult yet the most important part of writing a paper. This book is the concise version. It is a small format book designed to be convenient, portable and yet complete. ...

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV-TR Text Revision Diagnostic and Stat

5 stars (DSM IV-TR) - This book is absolutely necessary if you are training to become a psychologist or an LPC. It is very comprehensive for giving diagnoses. 4 stars (Useful but not that revised) - We are in the in-between time, the DSM-IV being over a decade old, and the DSM-V being due out at some unspecified date, but giving the general publication rate of the major DSM revisions and the advance of general knowledge, it cannot be too far into the future. I have the DSM-IV, burgundy-cover edition, and have dipped into the DSM-IV-TR on occasion from the library, but have found no particular reason to need to purchase the TR silver edition for the kind of work I do. This is a guide that is useful, indeed required, for graduate students in mental health and psychological fields, and for professionals working in those fields. As a pastoral care provider, I find it useful in many cases, but will warn that it is not a definitive tool to be used by itself in the hands of laypersons (which, in terms of professional psychology, I most certainly am). Symptoms and diagnoses are difficult to isolate, and not to be left in the hands of amateurs - to that end, I often worry about the general availability of books such as this (I have a similar fear for the PDR, the Physicians Desk Reference, whereby people try to self-diagnose and self-medicate based on their reading). The DSM-IV is not without controversy - indeed, the whole psychological enterprise is not without controversy. However, this is the current standard by which the profession measures itself (sometimes a bit in opposition, but there are few who hold the DSM to be meaningless). Professionals will want to have this book; graduate students may or may not need this particular revision. 2 stars (A Great Manual To Promote Diseases !!) - The DSM IV-TR is a great book to promote diseases that fit the armaments of medications that the pharmaceutical companies would like physicians to use. 4 stars (NEC 2005 Review) - There is not too much you can say about this book, it is the National Electrical Code. It is not a book that will teach you how to wire your garage. It will tell you the requirements for wiring anything. It is sometimes difficult to interpret if you are not a working electrician. It is THE reference book for wiring requirements. 5 stars (NEC 2005 NFPA 70: NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE) - I found this inforamtive to help in my job. ...

Speed Improvement for Young Athletes- How to Sprint Faster in Your Sport in 30 Workouts

5 stars (From a parent and age group coach) - Eleven of my age group soccer kids completed the 30 workouts in this book in ten weeks. After seeing the improvement in acceleration and speed, the other 8 team members and their parents are sorry they didn't join in. The 30 workouts alone are worth the price of the book. You don't need a sports science background. If you are looking for a "just do-it" approach that improves speed in short sprints, this book is for you. The book cuts to the chase. There is no need to dig out anything. Everything that is included is important and the program works. 4 stars (Univ Prof., Track Coach, Author, Former NFL Speed Consultant) - March 3, 2004 Reviewer: George R. Colfer, PhD. After reading two mixed reviews from 2002 and 2004, I decided to read and review this book. Considering who the book was written for (i.e., young athletes), I would recommend it as a Resource and Guide for Speed Improvement. No book is ever perfect for all audiences regardless of size, length or type. When I see a title for "young athletes," I usually hold my breath as most imitate what works only for highly skilled athletes. The first thing I liked about the book was the introduction including "How to use the book" (pg. 11) and Chapter 1, which offers assessment to determine readiness for certain components of the workouts. Another example was regarding Plyometrics (pg. 90) where the author states a leg strength requirement and who by age level should avoid plyometrics, although I would rather see this at the beginning of the section as many youngsters "do" and don't read. Dr. Dintiman is very knowledgeable and also proven in the area of speed and running improvement. He has a much higher level book now in it's 3rd or 4th printing. Speed Improvement for Young Athletes is readable and follows a "how to do it" approach without a lot of "hype." My experience with speed is that it first requires self-motivation. There is a lot of material and e...

Soccer for Dummies

5 stars (Great intro) - This is a book, especially for parents who are trying to figure out the game and people who'd like to learn more about it. 1 stars (A complete waste of time) - This is the first time I have reviewed a book for Amazon. I am doing this because I consider this book to be 100% garbage. If you are looking for a book full of annoying cross references (i.e. see page 118; see page 73) and for a book which repeats the same quotes or phrases in different chapters (was there really no editor?) BUY THIS BOOK. Also, if you are looking for cheap tid-bits and trivia about the US women's soccer team (was it really necessary to write three times about one female ripping her shirt off after a goal?) BUT THIS BOOK. If you want to have a general overview about the rules of Soccer but want nothing of strategy, technique, training, then BUY THIS BOOK. (or why not just go to the FIFA website and download the same rules which make up 50% of this book) But if you want to learn how to play or coach soccer, forget it. This book is a COMPLETE waste of time. 5 stars (Excellent intro for newcomers; solid content for veterans) - Carries on the excellent tradition of the "for dummies" books: offers solid content and information for veteran soccer afficionados while organized as a well-written, well rounded introduction for the novice. Gives comprehensive overviews about all aspects of the game -- rules, strategies, the world of professional soccer (the leagues, tournaments, events), as well as an excellent history of the game and its development. It's refreshing to see a book for newcomers that doesn't strip things down - there is a wealth of well-researched information here that is useful for the experienced fan or participant. ...

Football for Dummies- Second Edition

4 stars (Good But Still Doesn't Answer Why The Ball Isn't Round...) - And if it isn't round, why is it called a "ball"? Maybe it's been false advertising all these years. Maybe there really IS no such sport as footBALL. Maybe America's favorite weekend sport should be called "footoblong". There, I feel better now. This book starts with the most basic of basics and explains the hows and whys of football at a pace where even the most calculus-poisoned of intellectuals can soon know as much about the sport as any slack-jawed jock. Offense, defense, flags on the field, third and long, shotgun passes, sacks, conferences, pre and post season play, illegal but funny clothesline tackles, and why it's called a 'gridiron'. It's all here. Begin at one end of this user-courteous how-to tome and proceed to the other and by the time you get there you'll be ready to work on your beer belly in your weekend easy chair, bottle of brewski to your right, bag o'chips on your left, remote in your lap, kids locked in the car till halftime. This book can help anyone, newcomer to the sport or lifelong fanatic, pick up some new information on why it's so much fun to watch two teams of glandular cases with necks the size of tree trunks smash into each other in pursuit of a little pigskin ball...I mean "oblong". 3 stars (Mediocre guide...) - I am an avid football fan and I love to learn new material about the game everyday. I bought this book because I thought it would be a good supplement to the game. I was disappointed. The book itself is not very detailed. It should have been more accurate in depicting game plays and its players. Howie Long played defense in the NFL and I found it ammusing how the book was very defense oriented. Sometimes, the book was too "silly" and not informative enough. However, I found some chapters like the ones about the quarterback and the college teams interesting to read. 4 stars (not perfect, but it's all right) - I am not american. I have allways enyo...

Sunday Money - Speed- Lust- Madness- Death- A Hot Lap Around America with Nascar

5 stars (reading pleasure) - "Sunday Money" is all about NASCAR. Subtitled: "Speed! Lust! Madness! Death! - a hot lap around America with NASCAR", it fulfills its promise of an exciting ride. The author and his photographer wife bought a motorhome and spent an entire racing season following the NASCAR circuit. The book describes the allure of NASCAR from the several different perspectives of superstars, fans, history and politics, mythology, American culture. To this non-fan, it provides a vast amount of information and insight and reading pleasure. Jeff MacGregor is a fine storyteller. 4 stars (Sunday Money) - This is both a whimsical as well as a fast paced work about the fastest paced sport in America. Jeff MacGregor has a personal story to tell about his year in a motor home with "The Beep" and the inside story about the NASCAR culture. Both stories are well told and attention gripping. MacGregor's insights into the fact and fiction of NASCAR are penetrating. At the same time he has a puckish, tongue in cheek attitude toward the sport and his own adventure. Even if one has little or no interest in the world of auto racing, this will be an enjoyable companion on a trip or a pleasant escape from the every day world most of us inhabit. By the way, although it isn't mentioned in the bio on the book jacket, I think this is the same Jeff MacGregor who hosted a game show some years back. 4 stars (NASCAR fans-got to read!) - This book details the dream many of us NASCAR fans have-traveling the whole circuit in an RV, experiencing every race. I really liked the book-the history of NASCAR, the money, and the good stories of drivers, all were great! Having camped at races, I understand the joy of it. It is like you are one big family! ...

Mr Food-s Quick - Easy Diabetic Cooking - Over 150 Recipes Everybody Will Love

5 stars (Wonderful book with great recipes and techniques!) - My husband and I aren't diabetic, but we both need to lose weight. We didn't have much success with any of the brand-name diets, so we went to a registered dietician who put us on a diabetic exchange diet. Initially we had a hard time sticking to it, because it was hard to figure out ways to make food tasty with limited fat and starch intake, not to mention trying to figure out correct portion sizes to fit our exchanges. This book, however, is making it much easier. I'm learning how to make subsitutions so food tastes good but is still healthy and within our dietary limits. The food may not always be as full-flavored as our favorite old fat-laden recipes, but there are recipes my husband is actually requesting, instead of wishing he could have his favorite fast food or Thai food! The intro to the book has tips on portion sizes and subsitutionswhich are helpful in knowing what to eat and how much of it. Couple this information with a good kitchen scale, and you'll find that you'll be preparing meals you're actually looking forward to eating! 5 stars (Mr. Food's Quick & Easy Diabetic Cooking) - Brief and to the point, this book was just WONDERFUL. Mr. Food's TV recipes always seem so deliciously decedant. This book is also delicious ... but very far from decadent! Loved it! 4 stars (Simple, quick) - While his little show makes me want to jump out a window, his cookbook lives up to its name. Quick and easy, and the recipes actually work, unlike with many other cookbooks where the recipes do not turn out. I give it 4 out of 5 stars because the book lives up to its name and is affordable. ...
