The Barbarian Way - Unleash the Untamed Faith Within

4 stars (Oh Yeah!) - Great book for anybody who is burdened for the lost and believes they are being called by God to do more than the Christian next door. I recommend this book to everyone thinking of going into ministry or missions, or for anyone who knows someone already involved. Maybe it will help you understand why they act like they do. Peace! 4 stars (Where Do We Go From Here?) - McManus says it like it is. The church has become a tame, domesticated version of what Jesus seemed to introduce. Nearly every page of this book highlights invaluable concepts for the Christian life as it was meant to be lived. I can relate to the author; I was born and raised to walk the barbarian way--living my faith in a way that demands obedience at any cost. While others have tackled similar subjects, they often times seem to be full of bitterness and rebellion toward the church at large. McManus never gives off that sense of a grudge; instead, he wants to raise the church from its slumber. His "barbarian" way is a way of sacrifice and servitude. This is no mamby-pamby gospel that he's talking about. This is a commitment to a life lived for Jesus, no matter the cost. I loved everything this book had to say. My only complaint is what it didn't say. It didn't give us any practical ways to walk the barbarian way while dealing with the existing church. How do we make these concepts real without seeming divisive? Or, if we are to be divisive for a purpose, how do we go about it with Godly accountability? These are issues I've wrestled with for years. This book encouraged me to keep wrestling, but it failed to answer some of my deepest questions. For those who are still "civilized," this book might change your world. For those still trying to reconcile McManus' concepts with everyday church life, you will be inspired. 5 stars (Creating Writers Through 6-Trait Writing Assessment and Instruction (4th Ed)) - This book gives so many examples of the qualities to look for and teach in writing instruction. I especially like the fact that this edition is more inclusive of secondary ideas and samples. With this book as a guide, it is hard to miss what is important to the writing instructional process. The information is comprehensive and user friendly. 4 stars (Great info, inconvenient format) - Creating Writers got me charged up and well-prepared for teaching sriting/revision using the 6 Trait model. Spandel writes well, using a combination of research-based information and personal anecdotes to keep the reader's attention. I appreciate the number and variety of samples she included for practice revision/assessment. The samples were, however, not very easy to duplicate for classroom use. The print is too small and there are often two samples on one page, or one sample on several pages. The layout is difficult to work with. Overall, though, the book is excellent. I have been to two training sessions about 6 Traits, but it took Spandel's book to get me hooked and enthusiastic, and made me confident about using the 6 Traits in the classroom.The information deserves a 5 star rating. The format deserves a 2. 4 stars (This book is worth it!) - I found this book to be very helpful, user friendly, and filled with good information. Plan B- Further Thoughts on Faith

3 stars (I wanted to love this book, but...) - ...I got so weary of the incessant complaining about the current government administration. I would've rather she filled those pages with more stuff about her family, her mom, her son. But every time she turned around she was complaining about the government. It was the same kind of thing that really hurt Tony Hendra's "Father Joe" in my opinion, but here it's much more damaging to the flow of the book. Once I "kinda" got past that it was a great read, but not nearly as memorable as her previous memoir, "Traveling Mercies." Worth a read if you love Annie's writing, and I do, but probably to be missed otherwise. 4 stars (For Lamott Readers, But Certainly NOT For Bush Fans) - Anne Lamott is a writer's writer. And what I mean by that is that she writes on a level most writers would LOVE to make it to. She's easy to read while, at the same time, having a deep message, and a raucous sense of humor. I got hooked on her years ago when I read BIRD BY BIRD, a book that I still refer to often whenever I need to "get real" about my own writing life. I was pleased to learn that these are short memoirs of her life, a collection of short stories. The short story form seems to be making a modest comeback, and I loved the fact that a collection of them made it to the New York Times' list, too. But lets get into the meat and potatoes of the book now ... This is a look at Ms. Lamott's life through her own eyes, and she wears everything on her sleeve, including her disdain for the Bush administration, her dislike of young children, her poor motherhood skills, and her struggles with faith. Examples ... Lamott has to deal with the death of her Alzheimer's mother, pulling the urn that contains her mother's ashes out of her closet. And as she does, she reminisces about the final months of her mother's life: "Her purse was a weight, ballast; it tethered her to the earth as her mind floated away. 5 stars (An absolut MUST-READ!) - The LikeAbility philosophy, as Tim cleary explains, is much needed in our world. Tim's research is thorough and has depth. The concept is simple to grasp, yet challenging to implement in our daily lives. His practical advice and exercises are very valuable and easy to follow. Congratulations to an inspiring and excellent book, Tim. 4 stars (A Great Message ) - This kind of message may seem obvious but it is amazing how important it is to be likeable! It's not always easy and I do think it takes practise, especially in business. Often we are so busy to get all the work done that we can forget to take time to really be nice - especially when situations are chaotic. Tim is on the right track and I look forward to his next book. 3 stars (Somewhat Interesting) - Sanders' book is short, and interesting - up to a point. He briefly cites evidence that being likeable (having an interest in others, listening to them, etc.) is linked to good health, improved job retention, overall success, better quality time with a physician, greater liklihood of getting elected, and significantly reduced chance of divorce. Also, "nice" physicians are less likely to be sued, and more likely to win if they are. All useful points. But what about Leo Durocher's "Nice guys finish last" philosophy? I guess that's another book. ...

Calm My Anxious Heart - A Woman-s Guide to Contentment

5 stars (Finding Contentment is not easy, but can be accomplished!) - Life throws many curves. When my husband lost his job and I was an at home mom at the time, I was filled with anxiety. This book was my lifeline. I gained strength and courage to deal with daily struggles. I learned to thank God for my situation rather than asking him to change it. Believe me, there were days when I wanted relief and I drew strength from God to keep going. Eventually my husband found another job and we moved closer to family. I love this book and still refer to it often. This book brought me closer to finding contentment during a time in my life when I didn't think that was possible. I looked to God to fill my heart rather than looking to people or situations. 5 stars (Best Book EVER!!!) - Besides my Bible, this is the ONLY book that will reside on my night-stand for the rest of my life. This is the only book I keep copies of to give to people. Truly life-changing. 5 stars (Peace in the Midst of my Storms) - I've been a believer for 14 years, and this book has had a profound impact on my spritual growth this year. Scripturally grounded insights helped me recognize several areas of discontent in my life. I completed the book over the past year with a prayer partner, (one chapter every 2 weeks) and we both want to go thru it again. It is easy to read (I'm often distracted by kids), and the questions caused me to delve further into my "issues" and God's promises. I am buying several copies for friends that will benefit from this as well. ...
