Spanish Complete- The Complete Language Course - 3 Level Set Learn in Your Car

5 stars (Excellent for beginner or refresher course) - This course is excellent, either as an introduction to Spanish or as a way to refresh or sharpen your skills if you are already somewhat familiar with it. There are three levels, and each level consists of three 60-minute CDs. (You can buy each level separately, but getting the whole set is cheaper than buying each level separately.) Each CD is sub-divided into 10 or 11 small lessons presenting a single topic. The first lessons start with very simple vocabulary, then later lessons progress to simple phrases using that vocabulary, then simple sentences in the present tense, then more advanced vocabulary and phrases, and then the most common verb tenses and moods (present, past, future, compound tenses (I HAVE GONE), conditional (I WOULD GO IF . . . ), imperative (GO AWAY!), and subjunctive (I DOUBT THAT HE'LL GO.). The range of subject matter also expands gradually. The first level covers what might be called "survival skills," the really basic topics you need to know right away, like transportation, money, directions, hotels, restaurants, shopping, telling time, and numbers. Later lessons, especially in the second and third levels, include more advanced vocabulary, more complex sentences, and more complex situations. All lessons use the same methodology - the target word, phrase, or sentence is given in English, followed by a pause for your response, then the Spanish translation is given, followed by another pause, followed by a repetition of the Spanish translation and another pause. So for each target word, phrase, or sentence, you'll have three chances to say it in Spanish; and I can tell you from personal experience that this constant repetition works very well. 3 stars (Complete Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner) - This book is interesting, but it is far too "testbooky" and would benefit from being more focused on specific "how to" examples of treatment plans as do many other similar efforts. The text makes interesting reading, but, it didn't provide the concrete examples I expected. 5 stars (Another great tool for the practioner's tool box.) - Research suggests that an ever increasing number of practioners are relying on tools such as this to help formulate treatment plans. As a graduate student, what I find useful about this book is that after you study a particular disorder---from the DSM-IV-TR itself, a good psychopathology text (see Davison & Neal's Abnormal Psychology), and the DSM's Diagnostic Criteria handbook, The Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner completes the loop. I bought this book after taking a case studies class where the instructor did an absolutely miserable job in showing us the rhyme and reason behind a good treatment plan. Not satisfied that I knew enough about this critically important piece in the counseling process, I did some research and found this book to be the most highly regarded in this genre. As subsequent classes deal with child and adolescent psychopathology, family psychopathology, etc. etc. I will be getting the treatment plans that correspond with these issues. 5 stars (Thank You.) - Just what I needed, such a time saver now I can actually use my brain power to help not just write about it--Thanks again. ...

Biggest Plus: Easy and Fast 4 stars (Conversational Spanish In Nothing Flat (Frobose)) - Easy to use -- have found a couple of errors in English-to-Spanish words, but no big deal. It is somewhat difficult to use the book in conjunction w/ the recording, because the book has no real format. Took me a while to realize the "almost verbatim" words on the tape are where an index usually is. Otherwise -- pretty decent method of learning to converse! 5 stars (My Personal Experience with Conversational Spanish in Nothing Flat) - In my opinion, no "single" language tool (a book for example) will make you completely proficient in a particular language. The Journey of Adulthood- Fifth Edition

1 stars (HORRABLE) - In my 4 years as an undergraduate i have never read such a poorly written book. She has more typo's then I have including multiple references to the NEO-PR (NEO-PI-R). She incorrectly summarizes groundbreaking research (i.e. Ceci, Rosenblum, & Debruyn, 1999). Her feminist agenda flows freely all over this book along with usless stories about her self that dont add to the text. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK FOR YOUR CLASS. You and your students will regret it. 4 stars (Increasing understanding of Aging) - Hellen Bee is able to carry one through the years of adulthood through many avenues. Using scientific studies she interprets the data in meaningful ways. Inclusion of personal accounts and her conversational style make the reading interesting. The book continually ties previous ideas to new concepts giving a nice continuity. I especially enjoyed her occasional insertions of the not-so-scientific spiritual aspects of the adult experience, which I was not expecting in a textbook. My ideas of what it means to grow old were challenged and changed during the reading of this book. Some myths of adulthood are adeptly smashed making the thought of aging not such a frightful one. The only criticism I would include is that occasionally the point being made was not clear to me and a few conclusions seem to have contradictory statements in following chapters. That may be expected in the field of psychology, however. ...

Chinese Mandarin I

5 stars (One of the most remarkable learning experiences in my life) - The CDs will make you think about all the time you wasted in ineffective foreign language classes (previously, I thought I had no aptitude for languages). These CDs do what they say: 1) you learn grammar implicitly. It's remarkable - I can say a new sentence in the correct word order without consciously thinking what the word order should be(it justs sounds right). 2) rather than translating from English, you learn to "think" Mandarin. For example, rather than learning to count 1, 2, 3...., you learn to order 2 beers, then 8 o'clock, 3 o'clock. You learn to know the numbers rather than trying to count in your head. Despite my limited vocabulary, while in China, I was able to have passable conversations with complete strangers. It's hard to emphasize how much fun this was. Some asked if I taught Chinese in the US and most assumed I had much more language skill than I actually do. Both in the US and China, most say "you have a good accent." To compare, with 6 months of Pimsleur, I was able to develop more language skills than I ever received from 6 yrs of High school & College German (I don't think I ever had a conversation in German). With other language tapes, I found the need to constantly rewind. Pimsleur's approach eliminates the need for this. Also, in contrast to the many inaccurate Mandarin phrasebooks, Pimsleur's CDs are accurate in translating both the flavor & meaning of words. One seeming downside to Mandarin I is its apparent overemphasis on numbers. However, the reason for this emphasis becomes apparent when you start Mandarin II. In addition to the general utility of numbers, Mandarin II shows that months, days of the week, and many individual words are based on numbers. Hence, this emphasis is justified. Downsides: 1. While the CDs are effective in teaching the language, a written booklet would be extremely valuable as a later reference. Because there is ...

The Money Book for the Young- Fabulous - Broke

5 stars (Excellent Book!) - Have briefly watched Suze Orman's TV show several times, and couldn't stand it. This book, however, is outstanding. She has compiled a wealth of information (including various important government loan program details) for those just starting out after college. I wish it had been available for me just after I graduated! Topics included are an explanation of one's FICO score and what to do about it, strategies upon beginning a job, buying a car, buying a home, retirement funds, and handling student loan repayments. I think the only thing Suze missed was how to get the MOST reliable new or used car - look in Consumer Reports. (She did, however, encourage getting a used car certified by the manufacturer - excellent advice.) Am so impressed I'm going to find one of her other books that targets people in my life-stage 5 stars (A must have for the Young, Fabulous, and Broke) - Suze Orman is spectacular. She doesn't sugarcoat things and she puts it all out there for us young folk. She covers all the topics that affect those fresh out of college. Everything from handling student loan and credit card debt to buying your first house and handling investments. And the online tools that you get access to when you purchase the book are great help as well. there's even a message board where you can get real feedback from Suze and her assistants. This is definitely a must read for all young people! 2 stars (Good advice, I guess....) - Suze Ormon's advice is important to pay attention to, but in my opinion it's possible to get elswhere in a better package. If you like Suze's presentation, fine, but she just seems overly chirpy to me. She's FAR better IMHO than Mr. Kiyosaki of the two Dads, or real estate promoter Robert Allen, for instance, but my taste runs more to the Dolans, Jane Bryant Quinn, or Andrew Tobias....or Benjamin Graham, though he's far less entertaining.
