Beginning PHP- Apache- MySQL Web Development

1 stars (Not Worth One Star) - Worst book of all time, sorry guys and gals but whoever wrote and edited this book should buy a book themselves "Learn to Write and Edit by DUMMIES". To many typo's and script errors which did not work! Actually I would give the book a 5 star rating if they changed the name to Trouble Shooting Script Errors, Test Your Skills! 5 stars (Great beginner's book) - This is a great book for beginners. It covers everything you will need to start out and it's written very well - very easy to understand. The appendeces at the end are also wonderful, they cover php functions, mysql data types, etc. Also very helpful is the fact that you can access help forums that are specific to this book as well as downloadable files for every project in the book. I have several other php books and this is by far the best: the easiest to understand, the most comprehensive. 5 stars (Easy to Understand) - I was forced into the world of PHP, MySQL and Apache by my boss, and I wasn't sure which book to get. I chose this book and I thought it was great! I did see a few typos, but in a way it made me actually learn the stuff, instead of blindly typing away and hoping the programs worked. I understood what they were doing and it has made me catch my own mistakes too. For someone who didn't really know what they were doing, I feel like an expert now! And it was nice to have useable applications when I was done- we are actively using several of these now (such as the emailing script and the user/login script- and we have plans to do more). My boss thinks I'm a genius. I was reading these other reviews and while I can't speak for other books, I had no problems with deprecated code (I never saw that "mysql_create_db" function once in the whole book and I've been through most of it already) or the missing sql script from chapter 6 (it was the same database used in chapters 3, 4, & 5.. duh!) so I don't know what's up with these other guys. But oh well to each his own. ...

Beginning Dreamweaver MX 2004

4 stars (covers graphics and hooking to databases) - If you really are new to Dreamweaver, there might be some understandable trepidation at the size of this book, that claims to be for beginners! But the bulk is due in no small part to the authors choosing to describe 3 case studies. The implementation of code for each case illustrates various ways to use Dreamweaver. One interesting point of the book, compared to others on Dreamweaver, is that it seems to give equal emphasis to both the visuals that you can make, and to hooking pages all the way back to a database. Most Dreamweaver books concentrate on the former. But here is exhaustive detail on using ASPs or JSPs on the web server. It also looks at integrating Dreamweaver with PHP and MySQL, a popular combination. Graphics designers may not be so enthralled by some of this back end stuff, but on large websites, it is essential. 5 stars (The Author's support on this book is amazing) - Despite the fact that some reader reviewers don't think you should have to read a book from beginning to end, this book is set up that way. In fact, the introduction, and back cover indicate that you will build 3 complete websites in the book, so its obvious that you can't just jump around and hope to keep everything straight. (I don't do web development that way, either.) What I do want to point out about this book, is Imar Spaanjaars - one of the 3 authors on the book, who is absolutely amazing. I subscribe to the book's support forum at p2p.wrox.com, and Imar never fails to answer a dreamweaver question, or provide a solution - even when it does not involve the book. To me, that alone was worth the price of the book. Thank you Wrox for a great Dreamweaver book, and thank you in particular to Imar. 5 stars (excellent, user-friendly tutorial) - I am very surprised to read anything other than a glowing review for this book. I had got to a certain point with building websites [ie just completed 2 intro courses on ASP] and neede...

ASP Net 2 0 Beta Preview

4 stars (Nice book) - The book has 15 chapters and they are wisely categorized, starting from an introduction to ASP.NET 2.0 and why was it needed with some of its new features at a glance, it also discusses Visual Studio 2005 IDE enhancements and the new server controls like Grid View and Details View controls for effective display of information. It also has a chapter dedicated to Personalization and Membership and Role Management which is an awesome new feature. It also discusses Web Parts and Portal Framework and some of the language enhancements in VB 8.0 and C# 2.0. The book also features SQL cache invalidation and its benefits, lastly it gives us an insight into the additional new controls shipped with ASP.NET 2.0 like Mutliview & View Server controls and Wizard Server control. I strongly recommend this book to anyone seriously thinking to know more about ASP.NET 2.0 but note that this book was written for Beta 1 of ASP.NET, therefore there are some changes in the Beta 2 for example Directory Naming Changes and Compilation Model Changes , visit Updated Changes for Beta 2 and Features postponed for ASP.NET 2.0 Beta 2 for more information. Happy reading! 3 stars (For VB users & beginners only) - I was unimpressed by this book. MSDN documentation was 10x better, they failed to include any reference to Remote Scripting or Callback methods, they didn't add in any reference of how to use client side script handlers or a number of features you would expect that are included in 2.0. If you want an update to all the past controls that you already know then this is great, if you want to delve deeply into the advanced new features of ASP.NET 2.0 then I don't recommend this. The author also is obviously a VB developer but pads the book by using a generic converter for most of his code, quite a poor display in my opinion. 5 stars (Beta, Remember Beta, Not Yet a Bible.) - Note that this is a book based on the Beta release of the software. Usually, emphasi...

Professional DotNetNuke ASP NET Portals

4 stars (Definitive book for understanding DNN) - I had just started playing around with content management systems when I can across DNN. At first, the interface seemed slick and all seemed to be going great guns, even when I had not read any book or reviews of DNN. Ane then came the problems....some pages wouldn't get deleted...the DNN tree just didn't seem to work. That was when I bought the book and enjoyed every topic it covered. I was helped a lot by the ASP.Net forum, where all sorts of issues were discussed. Overall, a pleasant experience and would recomment this over the other VB.Net book for DNN. 1 stars (A Huge Disappointment) - Two of us have been trying since 9:00 this morning to get DotNetNuke installed on a development server using the instructions in this book. It is now 9:00 in the evening. We aren't newbies, either--I have used SQL Server and ASP.Net for several years. During the course of our day, we discovered several outright errors is the installation chapter (for example, the wrong SQL Server password is shown in the Web.config example) and the web site for the book is woefully incomplete in its errata notes. I rarely give books single-star reviews, but this one is deserved. If a zero-star rating was available, that's what I'd give it. 5 stars (Shaun Walker is the Obi Wan of DNN) - How can you do better than having a book written by the guy that leads the project? Shaun Walker is the man when it comes to Dot Net Nuke. He is uniquely qualified to provide insight into the internal structure of the system. ...
