5 stars (Framing) - This is a wonderful addition to any collection of carpentry books. Good clear explanations, precise drawings, and a great resource for experts and novice alike. 5 stars (EXCELLENT RESOURCE BOOK) - i am a 3rd year arch. student with some minimal understanding of general wood construction.Coming from a design oriented school they dont really teach any practical knowledge of the field but i personally think that i need to know some of it to get myself prepared, even before i graduate.This book helps a lot.It has a lot of information regarding the common practices we find outside with adequate amount of details to make you understand.Picture is worth a thousand words and this book is all about that.You do need to have some basic knowledge though to fully understand.The only con i would consider is that scope is only limited to typical residential wood construction.For project details of bigger size and greater complexity you need to look further. 3 stars (It's Ok, There are Better Books) - It is all about graphics in this book, a method of presenting that I enjoy but it needs some text and why behind those graphs. There are much better references out there on the subject than this book. ...

Wooden Boat Renovation- New Life for Old Boats Using Modern Methods

3 stars (Great read, but a bit thin in critical areas) - This is a very entertainingly written book, essential for anyone restoring a wooden boat - worth it as a fun read alone. Good general introductory information about wooden boat types and construction, very good information about planning and initiating projects, tools, and repairing holes in a wooden hull. Sadly, the book is a bit thin in some critical areas: the section on hull refinishing is insubstantial, unclear, and confusing. Also his information on the use of expoxies and their derivatives for hull strengthening is a bit dated - you need to look further to get the best info here, and this is a critical area. (I also take issue with his promotion of fiberglassing wooden hulls, but this is more in the area of a personal disagreement than a problem with the book.) Of course, with any ambitious project you'll have a stable of books, and be sure to add this one. Or get it for sure if you're an armchair boat refurbisher. But if your primary interest is refinishing the hull, look elsewhere. 5 stars (Great Read) - I found the book both entertaining and very useful. The author adds humor as well as knowledge which means you read for the enjoyment as well as the practical skills you will obtain. The author covers every aspect from searching for a boat , restoring , repairing and the all important how to get a good fininsh on your final product. Would recommend this book to anyone considering doing restoration work on a wooden boat regardless of size. Just completed my last restoration project using this book and very satisfied with the results. 3 stars (Decent info - but proceed with caution.) - The previous reviews touch on the good points of this book, so I won't bother to repeat these. 5 stars (Practical wisdom) - John Wooden succinctly explains the principles that he lives his life by. He interestingly weaves personal stories and practical wisdom together to make the lessons he wants to convey strong and memorable. In a culture that bases success on wins and losses, John Wooden offers a shocking alternative definition, simply that success is peace of mind which is a direct result of knowing that an athlete has done all he can to become their best. His incredible performance at UCLA shows that when executed meticulously, such a philosophy can produce wins, and more importantly, great role models. 5 stars (Incredible.) - This book was incredible. Every sentence rang with meaning, every word could be used to change the course of one's life toady. This book has had a tremendous impact on my life, and, now, I follow the book's advice, and 'make every day my own masterpiece'. John Wooden is not just an incredible coach, he can write an absolutely incredible book as well. A combination of 'Chicken Soup' and a philosophy book, this book now occupies the spot of honor on my shelf. Thank you so much, Mr. Wooden . 5 stars (Simply a Great Lesson from a Great man!) - This book is a must read for every parent, teacher, and coach. AND it should be a must read for every high school student and athlete. This should be at the top of every high school English teacher's required reading list for their students. It would certainly provide far more benefit than some of the "classics" they are now required to read. If more kids read this book at an early age, it would help them understand many values in life that unfortunately many don't discover until much later in life, if at all. Mr. Wooden writes in such an easy to understand and concise manner that kids will find it very easy but yet very powerful reading. It wasn't written specifically for kids, but they can certainly benefit the most before they get too set in their ways. ...

Wooden on Leadership

3 stars (Basketball - Yes! Business - No!) - Without question Coach Wooden is in a league by himself when it comes to major college basketball. He is also a very impressive and inspirational person. However, this book is another in a never-ending series of books trying to generalize non-business world (eg. sports, armed forces, girl scouts, religion, NASA, etc.) management techniques to the business world. Most, possibly all, are of little value because of major differences. 1)Members constituting the varying organizations are motivated differently, and face greatly significantly different situations. What does eg. a fighter pilot or basketball coach have in common with a pharmicist, nurse, professor, financial analyst, etc.? I have no idea. College basketball players generally are "in the game" for only part of the day for part of the year for a short part of their lives (about three years), and do not depend on it for their livelihood. That's much different than people working full-time at a career that they depend on for their livelihood. 2)Key success factors vary from one business to another. For Merck, it may be speed of developing new drugs, getting through FDA approval, and motivating physicians to use them. For Nucor Steel, it undoubtedly rests much more on low-cost production. Again, what does either have to do with college basketball - little, if anything. One is better off reading books from similar situations - eg. about Wal-Mart (if you are in retailing), about Allied-Signal or G.E. (if you are managing a conglomerate - I especially recommend Bossidy's "Execution"), and about New York Community School District #4, as managed by Sy Fliegel, if you are in public schools. 5 stars (What a pity) - You will not find a better, sounder book on leadership than this one and yet... it will not gain the wide readership it deserves. Wooden's emphasis on selflessness, self-control, making the team the star is an idea whose time has come and gone and sore...
