Barnett-s Manual- Analysis and Procedures for Bicycle Mechanics 4 Vol Set

5 stars (Best bicycle repair manuals out there !!) - At over 1000 pages (grease-resistant), a binding format that separates this massive book into four easy-to-handle volumes (and allows you to transfer the pages to a ring-binder, if preferred), every little detail the novice needs, all the advanced information the experienced mechanic wants, quick-find chapter dividers, and comprehensive coverage of all parts of the bike and all technologies are just some of the features that make this manual the bicycle tool you can't do without. More than a thousand computer-generated illustrations with phenomenal detail and clarity are used. More than ever, words and pictures are used together to optimize and simplify understanding. There are recommendations and procedures for numerous new tools introduced since 2000. Almost 200 additional forks and shocks covered in their new release fifth edition (available on their website. Look for BBinstitute or Barnett Bicycle Institute using Google). Dozens of new disc brakes covered. Integrated headsets now covered. Expanded coverage of Campagnolo products. Procedures for servicing newer models of pedals and cartridge-bearing hubs added. Wheel-building procedures for low-spoke-count and paired-spoke wheels. Procedures in every chapter have been refined and expanded. Best there is out there for sure. Great investment. Not a waiste of money ! 5 stars (This is what you're searching for.) - Don't waste your money on those paperbacks that clutter the sports sections of Barnes & Noble and Borders. The Nashbar & Performance Bike offerings are just as inadequate. By the time you've spent $10-$20 each on 2 or 3 of those anecdotal "manuals" with their "fits all" diagrams, you can almost pay the Amazon discounted price for this........... .........THE REAL THING. 5 stars (Comprehensive with many details, yet perhaps a little dated) - I haven't seen any bicycle maintenance books that come close to providing the kind of detail that Barnett'...

Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance

4 stars (new edition coming out soon) - This book was one of the best in 2000, but is now a little dated. Watch out for a new edition in late 2005, which should have improved coverage for recent hardware. 5 stars (Zen-like as the title implies) - The key to this book is its attitude which can't be better. This is an all positive upbeat book full of valuable information - assuming you have interest in the topic. I believe that all people can do many fix it tasks if they approach these tasks with a cool, positive mindset. This book parallels my thoughts and if you follow along, you will also find that you can do anything on your bicycle right up to building your own custom starting from a frameset. When reading about this book, I was skeptical about the illustraions in lieu of photographs, but now that I've used the book, I think the author very wise to have taken this approach. A good illustrator can bring out subtle aspects of the topic which would be lost in the clutter of a photograph. The only folks who wouldn't benefit from this book are those who know enough already to write it. I can't recommend it highly enough for the rest of us. 5 stars (Basic anatomy for the cycle surgeon) - I found Zinn's book to be an elegantly simplified explanation of the bicycle's parts and how they work together. Rather than trying to be a comprehensive reference manual for the professional bike mechanic, this book focusses of skill that will be helpful to the rider. For example, it gives you periodic maintainence routines to help you prevent breakdowns and keep your bike running smoothly. The book is further broken down into chapters that deal with the different functions your bike performs; shifting, braking, drivetrain and the like. Though I mostly use this as a reference manual, in order to make specific adjustments and repairs, I find that is teaching me a lot about how the bike functions as a whole. As a person who is new to the sport, the book has greatly increase...

The Cyclist-s Training Bible

5 stars (This is all you need to get strong) - Hands down, Friel's book is the best on how to become a strong cyclist. I disagree with some of the previous reviews' comments that this book is too complicated; I found it relatively simple to follow. This book is way better than the Carmichael books in that it gives you specific information on how to design a training program to fit your specific needs. It has really great information on different workouts to make you stronger, proper nutrition, recovery, weight lifting, and stretching. If you buy this book and follow it, you will, without a doubt, reap incredible benefits in your cycling. 5 stars (The best, shimply written book.) - I think, the philosophy of mr. Friel is the one that should have all the coaches. That would lead the young riders -especially them- to a lifetime excitment about the sport and make them better people. This is the most important element of the book. Here in Greece,we don't have the opportunity to read such as this, books so it is a very helpful book.It will make me a better coach. Thank you. P.S Excuse me for my poor English. 4 stars (A Great Resource that Requires a Little Work) - This book is for someone who wants to race a bike and doesn't want to look foolish doing it. The book has everything you need to organize and create a training regimen that will lift your racing fitness to an entirely new level. Based on the concept of periodization, i.e.-training broken into four week blocks with scheduled increases in intensity and active recovery, the ideas presented by Friel will allow the reader to schedule and implement a year-long training plan. The main drawback of the book is its complexity. The book never claims to be a one-size fits all sort of plan so there is a lot of information that will allow the reader to customize his or her own training. This can be overwhelming at first. The best approach to the book is to read it through a couple of times to get a feel for what...

The Triathlete-s Training Bible

5 stars (Useful for real-world athletes) - This book will give you an understanding of the principles that guide training for endurance sports and then give you a very practical, step-by-step method for preparing a detailed training program to achieve your goals. The plan will be based on the amount of time YOU have to train and the goals YOU set for your season. There are sections on special needs, like athletes over 40. The process does take some effort on your part, this is NOT a prefabricated plan, you have to put in the time to create it. If you are willing to do that, you will not be disappointed. (If you're not, then buy a different book, there are excellent ones that will lay out several plans for you and you pick the most appropriate one.) 5 stars (A very helpful tool) - I am a novice triathlete and was looking for a good place to start. Since I don't know anyone in my area that runs in triathlons I turned to the next best thing, a book. The Triathlete's Bible has helped me set goals, training objectives, and given me all the tools and resources I need to accomplish them. It has also taught me how to plan out my work out schedule for a year down to a week so that I stay focused, especially once winter comes where I'll have to do a lot of indoor training. All and all I would say a great book for people of all different ability levels. 2 stars (absence of science) - I bought this book after reviewing some comments here on Amazon. Since I am interested in both the physiology behind training and training itself, this seemed a good choice. I thought that if it could be criticized it would be on the account of too much information rather than too little. Unfortunately, I now think otherwise. It has barely covered the basics in how to put together a plan based on the athlete's specific needs. ...

Inside the Postal Bus- My Ride with Lance Armstrong and the U S Postal Cycling Team

1 stars (Misleading title) - If you are new to cycling then you will learn a few things in this book. But if you are already a cycling fan looking to learn more about Lance or US Postal, you won't find it here. This guy was so much an outsider that he doesn't have much insight. 3 stars (It's just okay) - Frankly, the book is just okay. The biggest problem I had was that Barry would touch on a subject, then dance around it. For example, during a chapter near the end of the book, he mentions that Hamilton tested positive, mentions that everybody around the breakfast table (most of the book seems to take place here) was talking about it, and then completely drops the subject. So, uh, geez, Michael, what were the guys saying about it? He also never really gave any insider's secrets to training, racing, nutrition, etc. I would recommend that anyone who is interested in reading a book about the 2004 season check out Coyle's Lance Armstrong's War, which I thought was a much better book. 3 stars (Great Introduction to Coffee & Cycling) - Michael Barry's view "Inside the Postal Bus" gives a great introduction to cycling, and includes some funny excerpts about the hotels, bus, and coffee machines that keep the team rolling. This is a quick read, and offers more perspectives on cycling than JUST "the" Tour, which is nice. The writing is not too sophisticated (most cyclists don't go on to college) but who cares?! He finally gives some of the riders OTHER than Lance and some OTHER races some coverage. If you are real Tour fan, this book covers some of the basics (meaning the jerseys, etc.) that we have heard over and over again but bear with it. ...

Sports Nutrition for Endurance Athletes

5 stars (My Bible for Sports Nutrition) - In the past I would almost always suffer from some form of muscle pain, cramping, or dehydration during marathons and triathlons. That was before I found Monique Ryan's book. Two weeks ago, I completed the Ironman Arizona triathlon and Monique Ryan's book was a strong factor in getting me through the race without any cramping or muscle pain whatsoever. The book is perfect - it gives you comprehensive nutrition information but also gives you plain, simple guidelines for eating and drinking - both in general and in preparation for a race. If you are preparing for a race and follow the book, you'll know not only what to eat and drink but how much and when. There are guides for the few days before a race, the night before, the morning of the race, and of course, during the race. I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in nutrition, but especially for everyone involved in endurance sports. 5 stars (This is a good sports nutrition guide) - I have one more chapter to read in which i read the almost the whole book in two day. I like this book because it takes the place of a nutritionist. Someone i can't afford, but wish i could. I am also a vegetarian and like that the author mentions the vegetarian diet often when talking about nutrition sources. They don't spend all thier time on vegetarian diets but for instance mentions that most vegans should take a B12 vitamin when talking about B vitamins. Also when giving a list af protien sources tofu and soymilk are in there too (which not all nutrionist do) This book doesn't have to be for aspiring or actual pro athletes but for weekend warriors as well. As long as you are not knowledge challenged. This book goes into detail about what your body does during training and what sources of energy it is using and may go over the heads of some readers. But i like to know why and what my body is doing! The first two thirds is all about general nutrition and fluids. Then there a...

Going Long- Training for Ironman-Distance Triathlons The Ultrafit Multisport Training Series

3 stars (A little confused) - First of all let me say that this is about the best ironman training book out there. However, there are several severe flaws. First, the authors are confused about their audience. It is never clear when they are talking to novices and when they are addressing elites. They float around willy-nilly first addressing one then the other. Warnings are given to beginners right in the middle of long spiels obviously addressed only to pros. I believe this book is probably meant for novice to intermmediate triatheletes. But the authors are inconsistent in their approach to this. Second, most of the equipment information is very shallow but nevertheless useful to novices. However, once again the intended audience is unclear. Thirdly, the training bricks, many workout, and much of the advice are clearly geared to triatheletes who are very advanced. Any first-timer is going to overtrain and many advanced atheletes will as well if they utilize some of these workouts. They authors recommend no more than two breakthough workouts per week!! Is anybody else reading this? So once again the audience is unclear. If the authors are going to address novices then they need to do so in a consistent way throughout the book. The same with elites and intermmediates etc. Despite these flaws I managed to extract a great deal of useful information from this book and will continue to use it. 5 stars (best triathlon book) - This is the best book on triathlon that I have read. I am training for an ironman and I refer to the book almost every day. Also, I used tips and workouts from the book for a 1/2 ironman last year and improved my time from by 2 hours. 5 stars (Very useful ironman survival tips) - First of all, Going Long is not a rehash of Triathlete's Training Bible. TTB gives you everything you need to prepare yourself physically to get to the starting line. Going Long gives you what you need to get to the finish line. The book addresses psych...
