Triathlon Training in Four Hours a Week

5 stars (Swimmer attempts a triathlon) - I liked this book because it broke training levels down into all levels. The author even has a trianing level for the single sporter like myself. If you don't have the time to go all out, then you should look at getting this book. 5 stars (Enjoyed this book) - I truly enjoyed reading this book and utilizing the advice Eric Harr offered. It was easy to read, well organized and made my training enjoyable. I just completed my first sprint triathlon, had a blast and now I'm training for my next race. I felt this book assisted me as I prepared mentally and physically for the race, not only by laying out what to expect race day but also the weeks leading up to it. I would highly recommend this book to any first timers out there. 5 stars (Great place to start your triathlon training) - This book is perfect if you are interested in training for a triathlon, but are just not sure how to do it. I run and bike, but have never done a triathlon before. I just did not have any clue how to design a program that would allow me to incorporate running, swimming, and cycling in such a way that I would be able to finish a sprint distance triathlon. Using the program in this book I was able to train for and easily complete my first sprint triathlon. If you have any interest in training for a triathlon and do not know how, I would HIGHLY recommend this book. It is not technical. It makes you believe you can do it, and it provides a program framework that works. The program(s) in this book cover fitness levels from bare beginners all the way to single sport Gods (runners, cyclists, etc.) They are geared towards a sprint distance, but adaptable up to 1/2 ironman distance. Each program is doable (time wise). You do not need to quit your job and divorce your wife. Overall, fantastic. If you want to train but do not know where to start, this is where to start. ...

Speed Improvement for Young Athletes- How to Sprint Faster in Your Sport in 30 Workouts

5 stars (From a parent and age group coach) - Eleven of my age group soccer kids completed the 30 workouts in this book in ten weeks. After seeing the improvement in acceleration and speed, the other 8 team members and their parents are sorry they didn't join in. The 30 workouts alone are worth the price of the book. You don't need a sports science background. If you are looking for a "just do-it" approach that improves speed in short sprints, this book is for you. The book cuts to the chase. There is no need to dig out anything. Everything that is included is important and the program works. 4 stars (Univ Prof., Track Coach, Author, Former NFL Speed Consultant) - March 3, 2004 Reviewer: George R. Colfer, PhD. After reading two mixed reviews from 2002 and 2004, I decided to read and review this book. Considering who the book was written for (i.e., young athletes), I would recommend it as a Resource and Guide for Speed Improvement. No book is ever perfect for all audiences regardless of size, length or type. When I see a title for "young athletes," I usually hold my breath as most imitate what works only for highly skilled athletes. The first thing I liked about the book was the introduction including "How to use the book" (pg. 11) and Chapter 1, which offers assessment to determine readiness for certain components of the workouts. Another example was regarding Plyometrics (pg. 90) where the author states a leg strength requirement and who by age level should avoid plyometrics, although I would rather see this at the beginning of the section as many youngsters "do" and don't read. Dr. Dintiman is very knowledgeable and also proven in the area of speed and running improvement. He has a much higher level book now in it's 3rd or 4th printing. Speed Improvement for Young Athletes is readable and follows a "how to do it" approach without a lot of "hype." My experience with speed is that it first requires self-motivation. There is a lot of material and e...

The Non-Runner-s Marathon Trainer

5 stars (Essential training aid for first time Marathoners!) - I bought this book after deciding to run my first marathon (ran 3 miles runs casually prior to training) and just came across it while browsing. It's worth its weight in gold and then some. I am following a training program separate from the one in the book (mine is a 3 day a week) but the information in each chapter on mental and physical preparation (and expections for the week) has been right on the mark. I think that the book's best quality is the emphasis it places on mental preparation and techniques to use during runs. I've learned through doing that training to run a marathon is more mental than physical...and I assume that will hold for October 30th when I do the Marine Corps Marathon. I am not overstating it when I say I will owe my confidence and solid preparation in large part to this book. As some mentioned in other reviews, the actual layout of the book could use some work, but I just dog-ear the important pages so I can turn to them quickly. 5 stars (Invaluable) - This book lives up to its title. It truly outlines for the *average* person, how to prepare for a marathon. It includes how tos from the pros and testimonials and tips from novice runners who have used the book and class to run a marathon. I am currently using it to train and can't believe how well I am doing with its help! I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to do something memorable like run in a marathon but never thought they could do it because of age, weight, physical condition, or even not liking to run. 5 stars (This book changed my life!!) - I bought this book about a month ago, pretty much on a whim. I thought, "What the heck! I'm 26, I'm not getting younger, might as well try to do something huge while I still have health and youth." So I figured, why not a marathon? I am still in the first parts of the training, but already I have seen INCREDIBLE results! I never really ran at all before. But I we...

The Competitive Runner-s Handbook - The Bestselling Guide to Running 5Ks through Marathons

5 stars (Excellent) - I am a college student who doesnt run competitively but I run around 3-5 times per week and have been for years. This book gives great information about how to train for races and improve speed. I have bought a few running books and this is by far the best, I have no need to buy any more running books. The only thing that turned me off a little when first recieving the book is its size, it has almost 50 chapters and is over 600 pages long. However you do not need to read all 600 pages, I would recomend it to get the most knowledge out of the book, but definately not necessary. Highly recomended for anyone who wants to improve their speed and learn how to the proper way. 5 stars (Great resource - don't confuse it though) - This book is a great resource for all aspiring competitive runners. However, don't confuse this book with Glover's other book - which is more for beginning and non-competitive runners. There is a lot of overlap between the two books, so there is not much point in buying both. However, I can see a beginner outgrowing the beginner book and wanting the extra info that the "Competitive" handbook can provide. Both are great. 3 stars (Good Enough) - This is my least favorite running book although it is written competently enough. Too much childish ego on the part of the authors detracts from an otherwise good enough book. The best part of the book for me was the discussion of heart rate training, something that is barely mentioned in many of the other running books. There is also not enough explanation on developing training schedules which wasn't too much of a surprise since the authors sell guess what?... training schedules and coaching. Worth buying but not the best. ...

Going Long- Training for Ironman-Distance Triathlons The Ultrafit Multisport Training Series

3 stars (A little confused) - First of all let me say that this is about the best ironman training book out there. However, there are several severe flaws. First, the authors are confused about their audience. It is never clear when they are talking to novices and when they are addressing elites. They float around willy-nilly first addressing one then the other. Warnings are given to beginners right in the middle of long spiels obviously addressed only to pros. I believe this book is probably meant for novice to intermmediate triatheletes. But the authors are inconsistent in their approach to this. Second, most of the equipment information is very shallow but nevertheless useful to novices. However, once again the intended audience is unclear. Thirdly, the training bricks, many workout, and much of the advice are clearly geared to triatheletes who are very advanced. Any first-timer is going to overtrain and many advanced atheletes will as well if they utilize some of these workouts. They authors recommend no more than two breakthough workouts per week!! Is anybody else reading this? So once again the audience is unclear. If the authors are going to address novices then they need to do so in a consistent way throughout the book. The same with elites and intermmediates etc. Despite these flaws I managed to extract a great deal of useful information from this book and will continue to use it. 5 stars (best triathlon book) - This is the best book on triathlon that I have read. I am training for an ironman and I refer to the book almost every day. Also, I used tips and workouts from the book for a 1/2 ironman last year and improved my time from by 2 hours. 5 stars (Very useful ironman survival tips) - First of all, Going Long is not a rehash of Triathlete's Training Bible. TTB gives you everything you need to prepare yourself physically to get to the starting line. Going Long gives you what you need to get to the finish line. The book addresses psych...

Marathon- You Can Do It-

5 stars (Great book. Useful and easy to read) - Best book I could find for a beginner marathon-hopeful such as myself. It is a folksy book written by a pro for the beginners and the more advanced runners. There are several easy to follow training regimens based on one's goals and levels of experience. The author is not overtly selling his own training services for running marathon, though they do have a world-class training program. I will be running my first marathon early next year. This book gave me nice tips to build my stamina while avoiding injury. 4 stars (Pragmatic advice for new marathoners) - I am finding this book practical and informative, but redundant with Galloway's previous book. One or the other would seem more useful than ordering both...and if I had to choose, I might purchase the other book for it's comprehensive information about injury prevention and treatment. Still, compared to other books on marathon by other authors, this book is encouraging, helpful, specific and especially appropriate for the non-traditional athlete: the older, female, injured or less athletically inclined among us who are still motivated to do a marathon for whatever personal reasons. 3 stars (Good info, but poor writing makes it difficult to read) - I recently signed up for a marathon training program based on Galloway's method (gradual increase in mileage and run/walk ratio). This book was recommended as a "must-read." I have to say I am disappointed. The chapters are not arranged in any meaningful order, and the "real" information is interspersed with a fictional story of a group of runners training for a marathon. I had read this comment in a previous review, but thought that it only applied to the later edition, not the original one. Well, it's in this one too, and while I normally wouldn't mind such a story, it does not flow well in and of itself, nor does really integrate with the non-fiction topics. The way it all fits together is so bad, in fact, that ...
