Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing Deluxe 16

3 stars (Mavis Beacon on Mac OS X) - I originally used Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 8 on a PC Windows 98. Loved it. This was back when MB was with Mind Spring. Simply Flawless. Now with Broderbund as MB Teaches Typing Deluxe 16 on an iMac G5 running OS X is a so so product for graphics. Actually pooh, pooh. It works OK as a typing teaching tool. I recently got to a lesson and got a fatal error requiring me to Force Quit the program and start over. It went back to the same lesson and required another Force Quit. Broderbund's website doesn't have any support. No updates for the S/W. So, would I buy this again. Yeah, cause this is all that I know for teaching typing. If you can buy this for around $10ish plus shipping and handling like I did then OK. 1 stars (They were right - not XP compatible) - Even after reading about issues with XP from other reviewers, I decided to go with Mavis Beacon simply because the competing typing software is even worse. I also could not believe that Broderbund would be this outdated - or misleading. Wrong. This product will not install under Windows XP SP2. AutoPlay brings up an unresponsive installer, prompting an error report every time. The Start > Run command (recommended by the install instructions) results in absolutely nothing. So I installed it on my aging Windows ME system, and it ran without a problem. Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 16 Deluxe is probably the only thing Windows ME can do better than XP. 1 stars (Stay away from Broderbund software) - I wish I could give them zero stars. Broderbund pulled support for software I owned only 2 years after it was released. I was unable to install it because it required internet registration which was no longer supported. To solve the problem, they offered to SELL me a different software title. They must have thought I was stupid. They expected me to give them more money??? This company has second rate software and third rate customer service. Do not buy any...

Typing Instructor for Kids

4 stars (High Strokes for Typing Instructor for Kids ) - High Strokes for Typing Instructor for Kids by Individual Software Target: The student was a 6 ?# year old girl; smart kid at the top of her first grade class. She was self-motivated to master typing, yet viewed typing practice as work rather than play. An unexpected alternate target turned out to be the parent. Expectations: The student understood that mastering typing would take a long time, and that three 10-minute lessons per day is better than one 30-minute session. Although the program is fun, the expectation that the student view it as a pure game was unrealistic. Yet, for the parent, it was a pure game; silly but entertaining. PC Platform; Hardware & Software: Dell Dimension with 2.4 GHz Intel Celeron processor; Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV integrated Graphics Controller with 1-23-05 6.14.10.4020 driver. XP home edition with all Microsoft security updates installed; DirectX Version 9.0c. Fun Factor: The student viewed Typing Instructor as fun educational software. She engaged in adventures on a treasure island, and competed in games by demonstrating typing proficiency. When the final stages of the game are reached, the castle offers a collection of books to type, as well as other games, e.g., a run away from the mummy type of game; both were enjoying. Narration was implemented with the aid of comical cartoon characters. This added to the enjoyment of the program, especially during the initial introduction before the student mastered any typing skills. The student was motivated to advance to higher levels in the game, and understood that it only occurred with advancement in typing skills. Multi-Person: The game supports multiple students. The parent started using the game out of curiosity, and became hooked. While the game challenges are geared for a child, the typing lessons are useful for adult too, and it helped to sharpen rusty parental skills. Also taught old timer a thing or two, e.g., the "...

Roller Typing

4 stars (Excellent) - Read an earlier review which slammed this product. Found my students to achieve decent proficiency in typing. I use it from 2nd Grade to 6th Grade. So what if it shows a canned movie. Yep I wish it would do provide other features i.e. a network version of the product so that I can review progress charts from a single view. However, despite these "shortcomings" this is one of the better typing programs in respect to achieving results. The kids love it and any program that gets students excited and involved is half-way there. 5 stars (Can teach a 6 year old to type!!!) - I bought this as a gift for my six year old who wanted to learn to type on the computer, tried other products at the library and the librarian recommended this one. I installed this easily on an old pentium 166 running Windows 98. It runs better than most kids software. It does have some issues with typing too fast or too slow but frankly I think it helps you place your fingers cleanly and accurately. The GREAT thing about this program is that my six year old loves it and it is teaching him good typing skills. The graphics are very interactive, if you mistype the characters (called bladers) perform comparable to your performance. The different events, cones, cow jumping (a real hoot), half pipe, sidewalk and speed skating concentrate on different typing skills. You jump more cows and do more flips over them if you are more accurate in that event. The sidewalk event requires both speed and accuracy and is definitely a challenge. The skater skates along as words are displayed for your to type. One mistake and he runs into an obstacle and flys to fall flat on his face. The graphics are redundent but it motivates the heck out of my six year old. If you are older and too computer savvy you may not like this. Particularly if you can already type. (Though I could see how using it would improve my skills). For kids just learning to type it makes a very boring (remember high s...

Typing Pal Junior

3 stars (Problems) - This game makes typing fun and easy to learn. There are quite a few different ways to learn how to better your typing skills, from lessons to games. I would enjoy Typing Pal Junior if it weren't for the problems I've experienced with it. One, other then a username my mom made, no more usernames can be created. I've tried many a different way to make one, but every time a little box pops up that says there was an error creating my username. So, I decided just to use my mom's account...more problems. There are certain activities you have to complete, and each time you complete one, you get access to the next one. Well, my mom practiced a few times just to see what it was like, then I tried. The actvities were fun! I completed quite a few, then logged off. The next day I logged on, and I was back where I started. The only finished activities that had been saved were my mom's (It must like my mom). I was disappointed, but went ahead and re-completed most of those activites. Well, I logged off and logged on again, just to see what would happen, and sure enough, they were uncompleted. Never does the game mention having to save the game, and I haven't seen any "save" buttons. Frustrated, I decided to try an arcade game that's supposed to help you practice your typing, and it didn't work. There was some kind of error there, too. I think I have to free up disc space or something to get it to work, but it's not THAT important that I'm willing to go through a lot of trouble for it. Overall, I would say that the game has a good concept, and a fun way of teaching typing, but there are too many errors in the game, and I can't help feeling as though we were kind of ripped off. 5 stars (Great Typing Program for Beginners ) - I bought this software for my 5th grade daughter. She was a complete beginner and within a couple of weeks she was typing. I learned to type many years ago and I found this to be great for polishing up my skills. It is v...

Mac OS X 10 4 Tiger DVD

5 stars (Sleek Tiger) - The finest OS to date. I was haapy with Paanthere, but Tiger is a steop above. 5 stars (From PC to Mac forever, this OS is amazing.) - I have used Windows for years and used a Mac at my work, I always liked the way the Mac handled graphics and also appreciated their ease of use. Mac OS X is so simple to use compared to Windows XP, it is by far the best OS I have ever used. I have not run into one single glitch, my powerbook has not crashed on me once. It had crashed on me a few times with OS 9, but this one seems to be a lot more stable. I like the dashboard also, you can quickly check the weather, stocks, dictionary or calendar all with a push of a button and built into the OS. You can also download many others for free from the Apple website. Itunes is a great application also and it is something I use all day long. Safari is far more superior in just about every-way compared to Microsoft Explorer, in fact it would take to long to list the benefits. I also liked the ability to run OS 9 in classic mode, so you can keep all your older software and still use them within OS X. If you are sick and tired of the Windows fatal exception errors or sending Windows error reports, then buy yourself an Apple and enjoy stress free living with OS X. 1 stars (Stick with Panther) - I get the spinning beachball and Microsoft Office application crashes about as often as I did in 10.1! I reformatted my hard disk and reinstalled Panther after trying the 10.4.1 and 10.4.2 updates. For my needs Panther (10.3.8+) is a much more robust and stable operating system. ...

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade with Service Pack 2

1 stars (stupid and ridiculous) - why? cause it chokes up PROCESSING and RAM that's why! its full of bugs and freezes frequently. [...] if you want stability get win2000. its ridiculous how they keep releasing new operating systems every year. XP = Xtra Problem. 5 stars (WindowsXPHomeSP2) - I had WindowsME, but something went wrong with my computer and it wasn't recognizing drivers for stuff so I got XP and that fixed all that because XP has all the drivers you need already included in it. 4 stars (No Surprises) - Upgraded from Win 98 on laptop with no problems except for conflict with wireless module. ...
