5 stars (Owner's review) - This book is in awesome shape, I used it for an online course, so i have never carried in a book bag. No markings, and very very minimal corners bent. 5 stars (Interesting and real world scenarios) - I teach technical writing at a community college and frequently switched textbooks until I discovered Mike Markel's. It is well organized, gives 8 measures of excellence in technical writing that students quickly grasp, has very up-to-date scenarios that prompt critical reading and writing and the online quizzes and resources are the frosting on the cake. This book is a great tool for educators, students and absolutely anyone who wishes to write in a professional manner. 3 stars (Well written, over priced common sense.) - The information in the book as well as the scenarios presented are well put. The writing is adequate for the subject. Overall, though, I feel the cost of the book exceeded the value. Much of the information in the book is common sense. ...

Technical Communication 10th Edition

5 stars (teacher ed. unexpected) - i was supprised that it was the teachers edition but it will still be usefull thanks 3 stars (This book is better than what some reviewers write!) - This book is written well and is a useful tool to use when writing everything from a resume and cover letter to a complete proposal. It also give instructions on how to make a web page and scripting in html. Although I am sure that this material is very similiar to that of the previous editions, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to write better. I wish that I had not read the previous bad reviews and ordered this book in hardcover instead of a used softcover. 1 stars (Written by an expert in the marketing of textbooks!) - John Lannon was a successful author of a college writing and composition textbook. He then created various spinoffs so that his publisher could cover more markets: business writing, technical writing, and so on (for both college and high school). So he's really not a current specialist in technical writing, and he's not employed as a technical writer. He's just an English instructor who has been using essentially the same basic materials in all his books for decades. This text is a perfect example. It has very little to do with today's field of technical communications. There are many other textbooks that have more specific and up-to-date examples and guidelines for contemporary technical writers. Any book by Hackos, for example, runs circles around this one. In any case, he and his publisher don't need your single-copy sale. They sell thousands of these books for coursewide use at many schools across the country for use in very elementary courses. They don't care about individual users. So save your money and buy something else! ...

The Craft of Research- 2nd edition Chicago Guides to Writing- Editing- and Publishing

5 stars (Excellent book!!!) - As one customer reviewer pointed out, this book is more for the student and higher education academics who are required to do and publish research. I purchased the book and read it in its entirety within a matter of days. It is very well written, and the structure and format are highly systematic. The "Craft of Research" has been the best reference tool I've come across that will help me to produce a doctoral dissertation that I will be proud to defend. One further point: Readers of this book should also consider a companion book, "The Craft of Argument," authored by two of the current book's coauthors. 4 stars (Writing - not Methodology) - This book is not about research methodology (as one may initially expect), but rather about how to write reports in a more efficient and convincing manner. To wit, the authors are from English and Literature Dept. Yet, considering that scientists often face difficulties in expressing their thoughts and research work, this book turns out to be very useful. It includes multiple "tip" pages at the end of each chapter. Technical Writing - Process and Product 5th Edition

5 stars (Useful and valuable ....) - Terrific, easily readable, and highly recommended for tech writers and those learning the craft, as well as for those corporate staff who will work with tech writers. Liked the parts on short reports, long reports, grammar, punctuation, research, graphics, oral presentations, instructions, technical description, and objectives. Did not like the wasted political-correctness (PC) ink devoted to "sexist language," which was unnecessary and does not fit in with the value of the other material in this book. That kind of condescending verbiage detracts from an otherwise superb and useful text. Still valuable for most readers. 5 stars (This really is a good book.) - I learned a lot from this book. 1 stars (Could you make a good even worse?) - There has to be better books than this. Every third word is a contraction. i have no problem with them persay except should we use them all the time? besides the teacher who is teaching my class (Steve Gerson) wrote the book so it seems like a way for him to make money on the side and the ability to make the students use his book. His content on web pages should have been left out because its outated. Overall try not to use this book. ...

The Elements of Style- Fourth Edition

5 stars (timeless) - The Elements of Style is one of the most important books that I own. Although I'm out of college, I refer to it again and again. Even if I'm not correcting grammar or punctuation, I'll still open the book to see what beautiful writing looks like. The writing is so darn clear that I often joke, "If God wanted someone to teach Jesus how to write, God would have hired Strunk and White." The last chapter deals with writing and how to craft one's own voice. This is valuable for everyone, and although Elements isn't a "how to" book on fiction writing, I've found S&W's advice to be sound while working on novels and short stories. Keep this book in your coat pocket. Study it at red lights or on the subway. This book is timeless. Lee Tasey Author of "The Gospel of Arnie." 4 stars (A Classic) - It's funny, when I was studying creative writing with Frank McCourt, there was no mention of this book in his classroom. And in my conversations with Neil Strauss, "Style" himself never once brought up this book on Style. Who is it, then, that reads this little manual? Academics? Everything it says is important, but the most imporant aspect of great writing is clear and engaging communication. You can read this book, but you might do better to read the best writers. McCourt, Strauss, Hemingway, Hunter S. Thompson, E.L. Doctrow, Tom Wolfe -- now there's a syllabus for learning the elements of Style. 5 stars (Great! There is nothing else to be said about this book) - This is a short book that deserves a short review: buy it, read it, trust it. You will write better after doing what it says you should do. Your text will be shorter too, which makes it better yet. ...

Essentials of Business Communication 6th Edition

5 stars (Excellent book for college and your career) - Finally, a complete text that is always useful. I have read this book over and over... each time learning something new. It's great if you need a complete and extensive description or a quick overview. This book will go from your college backpack to the desk of your new exciting job! 5 stars (An Excellent Guide to Business Writing) - This book is an excellent tool for writing, especially for the non-native English writer. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a study guide with many examples that have been updated for the current business environment. The numerous samples and the grammar review are very helpful for studying the fundamentals. This book is extremely relevant in a business world crowded with a cornucopia of poor writing, misspelling, and incorrect grammar usage.
