Organic Chemistry- Fourth Edition - Structure and Function

5 stars (The best book for chem majors) - After one term of having this book, I decided to become a chemist. It grabbed me really hard and made me realize the complexity and wonder of chemistry (something I hadn't experienced with freshman chem.) If you are a chemistry major, this is definitely the book you will want to use. If your prof is using a different text, I'd definitely keep a copy of this one to use as a second opinion, at least. It is extremely well-written and it's written at a high level. In other words, it doesn't just string you along and give you the basics... it delves deeply into reaction mechanisms and what is actually happening in each reaction. Product yields for many reactions are included, and this is quite useful. The writing style makes you learn a new way of thinking - that of a scientist. At times, the syntax is a little "brainy" (they refer to acetone by its IUPAC name, "propanone", for instance, and they refer to ethylene oxide as "oxacyclopropane".) I had an earlier version of this book in class when I took organic many years ago, but the revisions are mostly in presentation and in the problem sets. True, the problems in each chapter are not always good. If your instructor is good, they will provide their own problems to supplement the book's. But my suggestion is to go ahead and just do a web search for old exams and problems given by profs at other schools. Many of these are great and will give you tons of insight. For those who have already graduated, this is a good and up-to-date book to keep with you in your graduate studies or in the lab if you work in such a capacity. 5 stars (I Love Vollhardt) - After perusing several other texts at different colleges, I have come to the conclusion that the Vollhardt book is indeed a well done text. Although more examples would have been nice, I feel that the reactions are done in a straightforward manner and the Chemical Highlights provided are fantastically interesting. The Via...

The Double Helix - A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA

4 stars (A joint thought model of special value to children and young adults ) - It has been mentioned by reviewers that Dr. R Franklin's contribution goes unappreciated. Of course she had died of cancer when Watson and Crick et. al. received the Nobel Prize; otherwise she would have been included, as she deserved. That aside, the principal value of young people's reading this book, aside from a passing familiarity with a key discovery of modern times, is the way Watson and Crick interacted to get to the truth. Each would attack the arguments of the other- not in the tricky sort of way one associates with TV lawyers, but pointing out the limits of the other's arguments and contradictions with established principles of chemistry and physics. It is somewhat akin to Talmudic argument. It has a good deal owed to the logic of Aristotle and the thought process of thesis, antithesis, synthesis repeated over and over developed by Hegal. The book provides enough insight to be of value without such technical detail that would take it out of the range of an average reader. 5 stars (Science and Personalities) - Comments can be directed to respectfulempiricist.com This is a marvelous little book that brings out impressions of the many great and not so great minds involved in the ultimate understanding of what DNA looks like and how it multiplies. As the title implies, Watson is describing his own subjective mental picture of the people and events that led up to his and Francis Crick's ultimate Nobel winning discovery, a discovery that has stood the test of time. Watson describes the personalities of the many people involved directly or otherwise. Though he uses kind words, it is apparent that different people and different times grated on him. He also describes his travels, academic frailties and personal loneliness. The latter while thinly veiled, was mentioned throughout the book. Though there was description throughout the memoir, it was not burdensome to the non ...

Algebra Structure and Method Book 1

4 stars (Math Blast) - I think overall, the book, Algebra Structure and method is wonderful. The book provides the odd answers to the problems, in the back, which is nice, because it gives me sense of if I'm getting the problems correct, without telling me all the answers. I also like how the difficulty of problems is catagorized, with "a" problems being the easiest, "b"problems, in the middle and "c" problems the hardest. Sometimes the explanations of how to do the problem are a little confusing, though. All in all, this book is a good teacher. 5 stars (8th grade view) - I found this book easy to use. The only time I had trouble in Algebra was when we were getting into factoring and our teacher decided to go outside the book >.< But other then that it is easy to understand and it explains very well. 5 stars (This book is still out there and still looks the same!) - I was searching for a good textbook to learn Latin and for some reason this book popped up since somebody had purchased it with the Latin text I was considering. I used Algebra Structure and Method Book 1 as a student in 1991 and 1992 in my high school Algebra 1 class. This was a very good textbook and I had previously hated mathematics. My school also used the second book in this series as well as the Geometry book that goes with it. I learned math and did well at it. I think this series would benefit any high school math student still today in spite of the fact that the cover has not changed in almost 14 years. ...

Psychoanalytic Diagnosis- Understanding Personality Structure in the Clinical Process

5 stars (The Best Psychoanalytic Psychopathology Textbook) - This book has really caught on with psychoanalytic teachers because students (beginners especially) are uniformly enthusiastic. This book is readable and comprehensive and every page has a clinically useful insight those beginners or advance practioners can use. What also makes this book so appealing is that it is organized pretty much in line with (Axis II of) the DSM 4 but explains personality types (paranoid, narcissistic, histrionic etc) in classical psychoanalytic terms. Since psychiatry has been taken over by the biologists and since psychology has been taken over by the cognitive-behaviorists, psychoanalysts are lucky to have this presentation of their views. This book summarizes 100 plus year of accumulated psychoanalytic knowledge. Indeed McWilliams does for the turn of the twentieth century what Otto Fenichal did in the mid-l940's -- she has turned out a book that pretty much details the "state of the (psychoanalytic) art" at this point in history. Students will be very taken by McWilliams conversational (but savvy) style. Also the book has a feminist slant and takes what might be called politically correct positions on various aspects of psychopathology in women and this also may play a role in the books appeal to younger students who are suspicious that psychoanalysis is subtly (or not subtly) part of the patriarchal effort to suppress women. For any one who wants to learn about psychoanalysis this is one of about five basic books to start an analytic library. The basic organization of the book is consistent with the more technical, complex work of Otto Kernberg (which McWilliams's summarizes in a far simpler-than-original fashion) and also with the (sadly forgotten) work of Gertrude and Rubin Blanck. Also those who are familiar with Emmanuel Hammer's brilliant clinical insights into masochism will very much appreciate McWilliams giving Hammer's views a wider currency. 5 stars (not only for ...

Story- Substance- Structure- Style and The Principles of Screenwriting

1 stars (Do not buy this book) - After reading some of the reviews of this book I took a chance and bought it - and I am hugely disappointed. I made it to about page 50, when I realised I had not read even one thing of importance to myself or to any aspiring screenwriter. I hope Mckee is a good screenwriter, because he is a terrible writer. A complete waste of time and money. Eric Winter 2 stars (Write the abridged version, please.) - I am in a morgue with the author; he is conducting an autopsy. Strewn across the table lays the body of a story, bloated, maggot ridden, mouth agape, eyes bulging, staring up at me. I am gowned, goggled, gloved, a smear of vapor rub under my nose to mask the eye-watering stench. The author, scalpel and skewer in hand, slicing, jabbing, ripping, tearing, dissects the guts and organs of the story in long-winded, over-analyzed, often pointless detail; blathering story terminology, rancid lecturing, he rambles on and on, four hundred pages, which in spite of the vapor rub, still reeks of gagging boredom. Finishing, pushing the corpse off the table, sopping up the mess, trying desperately not to spit up my coffee, suddenly, to me, writing a story seems laborious and gruesome. Confused, bloodied, horrified, I think, `Can it really be this complicated?' I hope not. 5 stars (The best screenwriting book I've read) - Too many books on writing simply say "Just do it!" They tell you, quite adamantly, to "fire up your word processor and hack away at something until you come out with a story. Since you don't really know what you're doing, your story will probably be bad, but go ahead and write another one!" That kind of advice is ridiculous. You wouldn't give the same advice to an aspiring airplane pilot, or a brain surgeon, or a cop or a musician. Nor would you give it to a cabinet-maker or an auto mechanic or a house painter. So why do writers insist on giving the same advice to other aspiring writers? I think it's because most wri...

Collateralized Debt Obligations and Structured Finance- New Developments in Cash and Synthetic Secur

5 stars (Straight Steering in Structured Finance) - Even the experts have trouble understanding the various complex structures in the collateralized debt obligation market. In this book, Tavakoli does for CDOs what she did for Credit Derivatives. She makes sense of the confusing terminology, shines a bright light on the key issues, and discusses how to avoid the potential for fraud. She clarifies what the rating agencies miss. For instance, in a dispute between a German bank and a British bank that was recently settled in London, the British bank was alleged to have misled the buyer and then taken advantage of the buyer by substituting fallen angels into the CDO portfolio. Rating agencies don't capture this type of risk. Tavakoli explains how ratings won't save investors, but paying careful attention to the portfolio trading constraints in the deal documentation will. She recommends rewriting any "standard" document that doesn't adequately protect an investor's interest by adding trading rules and restrictions (if it is allowed at all), reserve accounts, and other structural protections. She also debunks the term CDO "arbitrage." This "arbitrage" is not risk-free for the investment banks who arrange these deals, but using this term gives comfort to bank managers who may be unaware of the hidden volatility in their trading portfolios. Very inconvenient when one can't transfer the risk to an unwary investor's portfolio. Tavakoli points out that single tranche CDOs in which one is long the super senior and equity and short the mezzanine tranche can turn the trading book into a delta hedging parking lot. She also points out that CDOs squared put you at risk for having some of the least advantageous structures stuffed as collateral into a portfolio. If it requires diligence and rewriting the documents to get a fair deal in a CDO, why would you accept tranches from deals that you didn't have a chance to rework? Put in this context, buyers of those types of...

Perrine-s Literature- Structure- Sound and Sense

5 stars (One of the best English textbooks) - I am currently using this textbook in my AP English Literature class and this is one of the best English text books that I have used so far. It really provides numerous poetry (famous and not-famous) with in-depth questions that I find very helpful for me to study 4 stars (Perrine's Literature : Structure, Sound, and Sense) - Read this book for Freshman English in high school. nice alternative to a textbook. Wouldn't really want to read this outside of class. 5 stars (Excellent) - I have this book for a college level English class, and I absolutely love it! The best part about it is the depth and quality of its selection of poems and stories. I found it to be a comprehensive collection of the best that literature has to offer. ...

Architectural Graphic Standards for Residential Construction Ramsey-Sleeper Architectural Graphic S

1 stars (Readers' Digest Version of AGS) - Although these editions change little, this review is based upon AGS 10th Ed. & AGSRC 2003. Negative: This is bascially a regurgitation of the more complete Architectural Graphics Standards, distilled to a "residential" focus but appears as volumous because some details have been photo-enlarged (in poor-average quality). Few, if any new residential details/information has been provided. Positive: Those ONLY interested in residential construction and NOT requiring a full brace of ALL details will find this quite a good value - compare its price to Architectural Graphics Standards. Recommendation: Anyone in construction should have one, but not both of these books as a prime resource. The content does improve every year, although some years it's like watching grass grow. Challenge: IF there are numerous portions of the Residential version that are unique and new to it, exclusive of passages in the larger AGS version - I would really appreciate a review that contains how to locate these passages, as I've spent enough time trying to find them. If enough of these exist, it would give thought of updating this resource once in awhile. 3 stars (One volume encyclopedia) - Experienced readers will benefit from its brief summaries and drawings covering the broadest range of topics imaginable. Some economizing is evident in the paper and printing quality, some of the drawings look 50 years old, but there is lots of reference information, like span tables, solar position data, etc. Probably not the last word on every topic, but still worth consulting. 5 stars (A wonderful resource) - Following in the terrific legacy of the benchmark Architectural Graphic Standards book, this edition clearly makes building for residences an easier task. I've found innumerable details that I've used in my residential practice on a daily basis, details not found in other reference books. Of particular help are the pages that give an overview of...

Designing with Models - A Studio Guide to Making and Using Architectural Design Models

2 stars (with poor pix, this is too much) - I was astonished with poor quality of BW pictures this book contains. And I paid $50 for this? The photos are poorly lit so the details are not clear, and not sharp enough for this kind of printing. Texts are rather sketchy too. Intrestingly, resources contain a section for books on presentation models. I found most of them are out of print. I can just imagine this book's innitial run was so low that gave this hefty price tag to this book. Unless you have a lot of money to waste, or you're advanced, you'll be surprised like me. 5 stars (Designing With Models Designing With Models) - From the standpoint of representation, and despite the advent of computer graphics and animation, the architectural model has persisted in being a privileged way of expressing architectural intentions. The irresistible iconic relation between the model and the building, and the intimacy witnessed through this association, has unquestionably contributed to this survival. Because in the model no extra interpretive energy is needed to grasp the intended, and because there is definitely a pleasure in seeing something big represented by something similar to it but smaller, the critical denigration of model-making has been minimum. This is unlike the case of the plan and other classical modes of projecting buildings where the conventional nature of representation has opened the gates for questioning their legitimacy. From the angle of making and performing, model-making has also remained a very powerful means of exploring ideas that have 3-d space as their support. The relative absence of a cognitive distance between intentions and their crystallization in the sensible realm, due essentially to the paramount role the hand directly plays in the shaping of a given design idea, has reinforced an interest in model-making as a means for expressing the immediate and the spontaneous. A closer relation the other visual arts has followed, ...

Building Codes Illustrated- A Guide to Understanding the International Building Code

4 stars (A little less mindnumbing) - Building Codes are never a fun subject to have to research, but Ching makes it a little less mindnumbing by providing illustrations. However, be warned that this book is based on the 2000 International Building Code and that many of the sections have been revised in the 2003 IBC. I imagine that Ching will update his book with the next release of the IBC. 4 stars (Great guide to complex issues) - This book has proven to be a great quick reference to supplement the 2003 IBC. It can't be beat for clear, straightforward illustrations of what are otherwise long winded and confusing paragraphs from the IBC that usually require a reading of three or four times until it sinks in. A must have for any person using the code book often or wanting a quick reminder of a code regulation. 5 stars (ARE studying material) - This is an excellent book to skim through for preparation for the ARE. I definitely recommend Ching's two books: Building Codes Illustrated and Building Construction Illustrated. After spending several dollars on studying materials for the exam, I found that I got the most bang for my buck from: the two Ching books, David Ballast's Study Guides, Larry Paul's ARE Practice Exam, and Archiflash cards. These were the the most useful tools to get through the multiple choice sections as they most closely reflected the material covered on the exams. ...

Residential Lighting - A Practical Guide

5 stars (A lighting technique that works!) - I've read a few other lighting books over the years but found that Whitehead's approach is superior for creating moods in rooms. My wife and I prototype interiors in our home and the results from "A Practical Guide" have been outstanding. We move and change the lighting with temporary luminaires and various wattages to explore the various possibilities before using them in real designs for clients. Beware - after buying into his concepts you will be frustrated by the lighting almost everywhere you go. - jim 5 stars (A Little Light Reading!) - As a Design Instructor and Lighting Professional, I can attest that Randy Whitehead's book is an invaluable asset to both the beginning design professional or the savvy client. Photos, diagrams, intelligent definitions-high light the the text. The good humor and obvious talent that Randy Whitehead exhibits makes this book an enjoyable and easily accessible resource. As a design instructor, I have found earlier examples of this author's books to be a dynamic addition to lecture presentations. It would be a great addition to any library. 5 stars (A Client's/Homeowner's Perspective) - As a homeowner who has been through two major remodels in the past five years, and who has had the good fortune to work with Randall Whitehead on the lighting design and installation for both projects, I read Mr. Whitehead's most recent book from at least two key perspectives: * an extremely satisfied client of and collaborator with Randall Whitehead on two major projects; and * a homeowner who has learned the value of outstanding lighting design and what that brings to the totality of the home One of the key elements that distinguishes Randall Whitehead from other lighting designers with whom I am familiar is his ability to quickly put himself inside the mind of the client in a way that immediately allows the entire design project to be collaborative rather than dictatorial, for lack of...

Courtyards- Aesthetic- Social- and Thermal Delight

1 stars (Honest Reviews?) - Were all the reviews written by the author? Give me a break! The fact that every review sounds the same will keep me from ever purchasing this book. In that case, I guess all the reviews helped! 5 stars (THE Book on Courtyards.) - Courtyards is a terrific book, the result of 20+ years of loving research. Oregon Professor John Reynolds is crazy for courtyards and it certainly shows. A courtyard is a space surrounded by a building, often surrounded by a house. There are all manner of courtyards, large, small, huge, quiet, loud. Some are open and others are terribly private. But all good courtyards have things in common. In the landscapes most of us in the US are used to, we have a house and the gardens are on the outside and we see them before we see the house. In a sense these landscapes serve mostly as dressing to enhance the outward look of the house. But a fine courtyard garden is different. It is smack in the middle of the house and the house surrounds it. It is not wide open to the world, but instead is a place to get away from it all, a place to be outside, but not to be out in the open. The best courtyards are open to the sky, have water, vines, a multitude of interesting flowers, trees, potted plants. A large number of the very finest courtyard plants are discussed in detail in this excellent book. I was struck by how interesting the numerous photos and designs were. Profusely illustrated, each one serves a definitive purpose. I was struck too, by how many different things go into the making of a well thought out courtyard. What is involved so that it will be warm in the winter and cool in the hot summer. What is involved so that it becomes a place where people want to be. I took many notes as I read this large book and some day I plan to build a house of my own design, and in the middle of it, I'm going to have a courtyard. And in this courtyard, I'll have all the things needed, the ingredients so carefully detailed here, that ma...

Sun- Wind -amp- Light- Architectural Design Strategies- 2nd Edition

5 stars (Lectures in written form) - I studied under Mark DeKay, using the first edition of this book. The second edition adds all of Mark's lectures into what was already a great book, full of very helpful rules of thumb for orientation, materials, siting, and a lot of other design recommendations. A great book made even better the second time around! 5 stars (highly advanced) - A very comprehensive book which leaves you with shortness of breath after each page, covers very well all the aspects of the title and their interaction and effect on planning a building or project of any kind, and gives u alot of new ideas on how to find out the effects of sun, wind and light and from where will the effect be more and how to make advantage of each one of these elements. keeps you woundering whether what you have ever designed before was valid or not. rich in figures and examples, slightly difficult regarding the laguage. but it is worth every penney. 5 stars (Climate Sensitive Design) - This book is very helpful in determining the siting of your building (or gardens)with respect to wind patterns, and sun patterns of your area. As a designer of both indoor and outdoor spaces I found it to be a practical resource for helping ensure the success of a design. When I want shade, I now know where shade will fall; when I want to fill a space with light, I now know where and when light will be there and can adjust my design accordingly. Great book! Would reccommend it to architects, landscape architects and anyone wanting to see how their designs integrate into the daily and seasonal climate, wind, and light patterns of their area. The Sun Peg Charts are especially helpful. Good starting and reference point for all designs. Definitely add this one to your library. ...

Simplified Engineering for Architects and Builders- 9th Edition

5 stars (Excellent introductory book) - This book explains the fundamentals of structural analysis (mainly statically determinate structures) and then goes on to the design fundamentals for different materials (wood, steel, concrete and masonry) followed by the design of the structural system for a building. I first used an earlier edition of this book when studying for my undergraduate degree as an introductory book before reading the course texts. The present edition maintains the "easy to understand" explanations of the earlier edition while adding new materials, expanding other sections and updating the design methods in line with the building codes. Emphasis is placed on understanding, the explanations given are very clear and there are numerous worked examples to illustrate the principles. The book is excellent for the beginner first getting used to structural analysis and design or for the practising engineer who has not touched structures for a while and wants to refresh his memory. However this book is only the first step and the undergraduate or practising engineer would do well to follow up on this with other more specialised books like Wang and Salmon's "Reinforced Concrete Design", Salmon and Johnson's "Steel structures: Design and behaviour", or Halperin and Bible's "Principles of Timber Design for Architects and Builders". ...
