Wooden Boat Renovation- New Life for Old Boats Using Modern Methods

3 stars (Great read, but a bit thin in critical areas) - This is a very entertainingly written book, essential for anyone restoring a wooden boat - worth it as a fun read alone. Good general introductory information about wooden boat types and construction, very good information about planning and initiating projects, tools, and repairing holes in a wooden hull. Sadly, the book is a bit thin in some critical areas: the section on hull refinishing is insubstantial, unclear, and confusing. Also his information on the use of expoxies and their derivatives for hull strengthening is a bit dated - you need to look further to get the best info here, and this is a critical area. (I also take issue with his promotion of fiberglassing wooden hulls, but this is more in the area of a personal disagreement than a problem with the book.) Of course, with any ambitious project you'll have a stable of books, and be sure to add this one. Or get it for sure if you're an armchair boat refurbisher. But if your primary interest is refinishing the hull, look elsewhere. 5 stars (Great Read) - I found the book both entertaining and very useful. The author adds humor as well as knowledge which means you read for the enjoyment as well as the practical skills you will obtain. The author covers every aspect from searching for a boat , restoring , repairing and the all important how to get a good fininsh on your final product. Would recommend this book to anyone considering doing restoration work on a wooden boat regardless of size. Just completed my last restoration project using this book and very satisfied with the results. 3 stars (Decent info - but proceed with caution.) - The previous reviews touch on the good points of this book, so I won't bother to repeat these. Suffice to say, there's plenty of good info to be had from this book. I would however express one word of caution. It has to do with the author's tendancy to push the reader toward approaches and methods t...

Contemporary Sport Management

5 stars (Great book) - This book was required for my introduction to sport management classes. JB Parks and J. Quarterman did a fantastic job at putting this introductory book together. Whats even better is that my professor for this class was JB Parks herself, in her final year before retiring from Bowling Green State University. She is a wonderful professor and very smart in the field of sports management. I would suggest this book for any sports management major, professor, etc. 4 stars (Very Helpful) - This book was a required textbook in one of my sport management major classes - it's the only one so far that I've bothered to keep. The information is timely and easy to reference. ...

World Cruising Routes

3 stars (Not for the armchair cruiser) - I would someday like to cruise around the world, and I bought this book in the hopes of learning more about the possible routes so that I could make some preliminary plans. I'm sure it will come in handy in a few years, but for now, it's overwhelming. I think this information would be best presented as an interactive CD-ROM. Click on a starting point, click on several destinations, and the software tells you when you should start the trip, how long it would take, whether you need to alter the route, etc. If someone knows of such a program, please pass along the info. 5 stars ( World Cruising Routes ) - An absolute necessity for any small yacht going to sea. It is logically compiled and written. Jimmy Cornell has written a book that is exactly what every sailor needs...guidance in getting from port a to port b efficiently, safely, and with the best possible winds and weather. 3 stars (Great Map) - If you are looking for an excellent road map of the oceans and plan on traveling soon this is a good read. If you are looking for adventure in a book, great descriptions of countries, islands visited this is not what you want to buy. I would not consider this a great travel guide. ...

The Plane Truth for Golfers

5 stars ( The Plane Truth for Golfers ) - Excellent, straight forward, presented in simple logical terms and concepts. A valuable book for anyone who wants to learn more about the golf swing. 5 stars (the plane truth for golfers) - Frustrated with my lack of distance (age 75) signed-up for the one-olane swing and am really surprised at the results. Try it - you'll like it.. 5 stars (Destined to be a Classic Instructional Book) - Finally, someone has cleared the "instructional" air to enable golfers (especially those that are golf magazine and Golf Channel addicts) to recognize which tips apply to them. Also, it's refreshing to see an instructor of Mr Hardy's caliber come out so strongly in favor of a swing type (the 1 plane swing) that the general golf community has been led to believe (by TV analysts and other highly recognized swing gurus) was inferior. This book did a good job of giving the reader a "side by side" comparison between the 1-plane and 2-plane swings. Although it's probably more suited for a 1-plane swinger, at the very least it enables a 2-plane swinger to understand he's a 2-plane swinger and heed advice accordingly. ...

Meditations on Hunting

5 stars (An absolute necessity for the animal rights debate.) - Ortega delves into the art of hunting, and gets to the root of the matter. Both the nature of human, and of animal are examined. Be forewarned, this is heavy duty philosophy, not just an article on where to hang a tree stand. Ortega wrote in the early twentieth century, and so some will think his ideas are dated, and that we know much better now. This gives rise to the thought that humans change rapidly. Ortega's work stands because we do not substantially change over just a hundred or even a thousand years. This is why Shakespear and the Bible are still applicable, and why Ortega's Meditations On Hunting still stands. The act of hunting has changed over the centuries, to evolve into sport. Ortega delves into this also, and his answer to our inner questions, and the current questions of animal rightists is so clear and distilled that it shines in one's brain. It is rare to find one so clear in academia. ...

The Last Shot - City Streets- Basketball Dreams

5 stars (For Any One Who Truly Cares) - This book was the best written and best depicted book I have ever read. From the beginning it was raw and real. For any one who truly cares about and loves basketball this is a must read. This is as raw and real as it gets in the basketball world. 5 stars (Four inner city kids looking for a way out) - This is probably the best book i have ever read. What it lacked in description in made up for in plot. I never wanted to put this book down! I was amazed at some of the hardships these kids go to, and reading this book can really onpen ones mind. You will be truly inspired and facisinated as i recommend this book to even people with little interest in basketball. I also must say that Stephon Marbury was not a character that was portayed with detail in this book, and you were not overly intersted to know what would become of him. 4 stars (Good story, could have been a great book with better writing) - I found this to be an interesting story and a pretty good book. I thought the descriptions of the coaches' recruiting antics were very enlightening and well written. Being able to use some of the real names, particularly very well known ones such as Stephon Marbury and Jim Boeheim, added a lot to the credibility of the book. Where I found this work to be lacking was in the descriptive writing. Really good writers construct word pictures that are vivid and allow the reader to better experience the story being told. I didn't find the writing quality in this book that would have made me rate it a 5 star effort. This author's style seemed to me to be more like a newspaper reporter's - limited to a fixed amount of space and more focused on the basics than the aesthetics. Outstanding books also need to deliver the aesthetics in the form of well painted word pictures. I wish this book had been stronger in that area. ...

Five Lessons- The Modern Fundamentals of Golf

2 stars (Don't see it) - This book was not written well. I'm sorry, but I don't see how it has been so popular over the years. He just absolutely does not explain things well enough for you to learn something. Not even the grip. Don't buy this. Buy the Bobby Jones book. It's awesome. 5 stars (Must read for beginners and low handicappers) - This is with out a doubt the best golf book I've read! I only wish I had read it when I first took up golf. The level of detail is extremely impressive, and it's an easy read. 4 stars (Five Lessons: the modern fundamentals of golf) - A bit out dated but still loaded with good advice. A must buy for all golfers... ...

Snorkel Hawaii The Big Island- Second Edition

5 stars (There is a newer edition of this book!) - Snorkel Hawaii The Big Island Second Edition is the current, in print version of this book. From time to time, the Amazon search engine sends people to this older, out of print version. We have tried repeatedly to correct this, but Amazon seems unable to do it. Try clicking on the authors names, and look for Snorkel Hawai The Big Island Second Edition, which is more up to date. 5 stars (WONDERFUL!!) - Handy and cleverly detailed, the Malinowskis sure know the Big Island. There were enough listings to keep me diving every day for two weeks. You have to go underwater to really appreciate this place. You should also buy a surfing rashguard top to stay warm because you'll be underwater more than you ever thought. The Big Island Revealed pales in complexion and is not a contender when it comes to knowing anything about snorkeling. You won't need to sign up for a pricey professional tour if you have this book. Snorkeling Hawaii takes you to the same places the tours tout as hidden and private. 5 stars (Snorkel Hawaii The Big Island --New Edition) - The second edition of this book is great. There are so many snorkeling sites that this book will be a welcome companion for years. In fact, it has already made the Big Island a favorite. You won't find places like Frog Rock described anywhere else, so you will likely have this fabulous site to yourselves. One can snorkel a different site each day and find them just the way the book describes them. This book helped discover the Big Island in a very special way, and I fully recommend it. ...

Krav Maga - An Essential Guide to the Renowned Method--for Fitness and Self-Defense

4 stars (Good source of insight into Krav Maga.) - This book is a valuable insight into Krav Maga. I thought it was well written and considerably informative. Although the technique section wasn't very helpful because it is hard to get an idea on how a technique is carried out by looking at a small drawing of a person using arrows to show direction. If you want to learn about origins and history of Krav Maga then this book is what you want. But if technique instruction is what your looking for then I recommend the DVD set, or even better join a class. 2 stars (The first two levels) - Until now, there has not been a book on krav maga techniques that relates to a average practitioner. This book tries to fill that gap, but in my opinion, it does not do a very good job. At the beginning of the book, Kahn explains why krav maga is so good self defense system. This section annoyed me a bit since Kahn is way too biased, and the text reminded me of TV infomercials. After that, he goes through the history of krav maga, explains the basic principles of krav maga, tells some basic principles of real world self defense, touches on the subject of avoidance, and so on. While it is a good thing that Kahn has covered these issues about real world self defense, he does not do a very good job about it. I even began to wonder about his expertise on these subjects. Next, the book moves on to actual techniques. The book covers the first two levels of krav maga techniques, therefore the average krav maga practitioner can use the book as a reference book. Unfortunately, the techniques are instructed so vaguely that you really can't learns them from this book. There are drawings on every technique (usually 2 of 3 for every technique), but they are not very good, either. Therefore, you must seek an instructor to teach the techniques, and use this book to assist your training at home. At the end of the book, there is a complete, 12-week training program intended for persons who have no pr...

Be Expert with Map and Compass

1 stars (Too outdated) - Don't waste your time or money. This was an okay book in its day (though it has zero content about altimeters) but that day is long past. The new edition of the Land Navigation Handbook covers the basics equally well and also educates on altimeters, digital mapping, and GPS. 5 stars (Thoughts from a beginner) - I signed up to compete in an all day adventure race with orienteering being the main focus. I had never done orienteering before in my life and had no idea what was involved. Upon advice from other racers I purchased BEWMAC (as those in the "know" call it) and I read this book to my team-mate over the course of a 5 hour drive from Pittsburgh to Detroit. Literally this was my first exposure to orienteering. We were able to successfully navigate through an all day orienteering adventure race using this book. I thought it was easy to understand, came with a sample book and all of the skills were reinforced with simple quizzes at the end of each chapter. I have no doubt that there are more in debt studies, but from a beginners standpoint you can't go wrong. Just get it already. 2 stars (Vastly Overrated and Outdated) - This was the first book I ever bought on the subject of using a map and compass. It was recommended by everyone I knew, as there wasn't a whole lot else out there at the time, and it had been in print since 1955. About the best I can say for Kjellstrom's book is that it is better for beginners than the Sierra Club Handbook (also an old book), but that's about it. Illustrations are few and muddy, and the book has an ancient feel to it, with outdated references and quirky language (it's been in print for nearly 50 years, and the author died nearly 10 years ago when in his nineties). Fully half the book doesn't even deal with real-life wilderness navigation, but is instead devoted to the sport of orienteering (a fine sport, but with little relevance to practical backcountry navigation with its use of special large s...

The New Toughness Training for Sports - Mental Emotional Physical Conditioning from 1 World-s Premie

1 stars (So-so, look at others before you buy) - This book was so-so. It contained a lot of highly basic material. I was not really impressed with Dr. Loehr's theories about sport. It seemed that he did not have much access to sport himself. The examples that were given were very modest and could have used some help. I would only reccommend this book to someone who has rarely particiapted in sports...too basic for the advanced. 2 stars (A little over the edge...) - This book has a lot of terms and things that don't make a lot of sense. The intentions in this are great, but I want a book that is straightforward. The exercises aren't bad, but the talk isn't all that motivational. 5 stars (excellent book. Motivated me to walk the appalachian trail) - excellent book. Motivated me to walk the appalachian trail ...

The Swordman-s Companion- A Manual for Training With the Medieval Longsword

5 stars (Excellent) - As a long-time researcher and historical fencer, I can say that this is simply the best non-monographical book on the longsword out there. Guy Windsor is a first-rate teacher, and this comes across plainly in his writing and in the organization of this book. The book provides enough historical material to demonstrate where the original concepts and techniques can be found, then expands into clearly-defined lessons from a teacher with considerable experience. Many of the common mistakes are identified and advice is given on how to avoid them or correct them. Actions are explained in terms of martial soundness and correct body-mechanics. Illustrations are numerous, clear and relevant. Furthermore, Guy's writing style is dynamic and interesting, making the Companion a good read as well as a useful training tool. A high-quality, informative and well-written book that I heartily recommend to all serious students of the late-Medieval sword-arts. 5 stars (A great book for those who want to learn real swordsmanship) - I just got my copy of this book, and I am suitably impressed. This book is mainly based on the Italian masters, notably Fiore di Liberi's work. And as such, the terms given here for the guards and cuts are in italian. Initially described in english as well, but italian after that. Now, this may be confusing for those who are beginners or non-italian speakers. More on this in a minute. I like the fact that this book contains plenty of one and two person exercises to work through, illustrated with actual photos that are clear and easy to follow. This book also includes warm ups that should be done before practice begins, and some great exercises on body mechanics. You may wonder what being able to keep your balance on one foot has to do with swordsmanship, especially doing this with your eyes closed (Harder than it sounds!). Nothing, and yet, everything. Proper balance, footwork, and body mechanics are essential to good technique, a...

Fifty Places to Fly Fish Before You Die- Fly-Fishing Experts Share the World-s Greatest Destinations

5 stars (A must for the Rich Fishing Addict) - If you have unlimited funds and time this book provides the backbone for a lifetime of fishing trips to exotic locales. Initially I bought the book as a gift for a flyfishing addict but it was such a great read that I ended up buying a second book for myself. The photography is outstanding and so far I've visited 2 of the places in the book and they both ranked as the top trips I'veever taken. 2 down and 48 more to go!!! 3 stars (Pretty Pictures, Lacking In Meet) - Flyfishing books seem to come in 3 forms, unfortunately. 1) How To - From Basic to Obscure tips 2) Stories/Biography's - Self Explanatory 3) Pretty Pictures While there are exceptions ("Leaper", "Atlantic Salmon Chronicles" come to mind), this isn't one. It's in the Pretty Pictures category. And Pretty the Pictures Are! It shows you the same places the magazine always talk about, but in glorious color. Good for the coffee table I suppose. 5 stars (Fifty Places to Fly Fish Before You Die) - I boutht this book for my father for Father's Day and he hasn't let it out of his sight since. He has read it cover to cover at least twice. Pictures beautiful and descriptions detailed. I think he is making his reservations for next year on Christmas Island. He was with us the week I gave it to him and he told everyone about the book. What a buy! I will have to get another copy if I want to read it -- it definitely will not be passed on throughout the rest of us fly fishermen in the family. ...

Kung Fu Elements- Wushu Training and Martial Arts Application Manual

5 stars (A lot of good drills.) - If you're looking for drills and ideas to strengthen your foundation in Chinese Martial Arts, this is a great all-around book. I've been studying CMA for over 10 years and I still found this book to be refreshing. It's all about the basics and ways to strengthen the basics. It's those types of drills that, if you practice them diligently, will give you that edge in competition. At the higher levels, it's the little things that matter 5 stars (Good book for begining Wushu.) - I have studied only Japanese styles in a formal setting so far (karate and aikido) and wanted to have some additional practice and influence to help blend my style. I believe the book is intended for a refresher and additional practice for veterans of the style but it works nicely if you already have had some martial arts experience. It gives aspects of style, good stretching exercises, kung fu attainment training techniques and of course free fighting applications. Though you cant substitute reading the "applications" section for formal, hands on experience. I would recomend this book as a resourse for any martial artist wishing to expand their base of knowlege and help blend their style. Peace 4 stars (best overall martial arts training guide) - As a martial artist who has trained in both Japanese (Karate/Judo) and Chinese styles (Shaolin Choy li fut and taiji) I refer to this frequently to refresh my training knowledge. My only beef with it is that it is kind of lacking on some aspects of martial arts such as chi development and training tools. The only other aspect that annoys me is how it refers to martial art styles such as Choy Li Fut in a weird romanization of translation such as calling this style Cao Li Fun when nobody except for a Cantonese speaker would ever call it this name. BUT with that said overall I highly recommend it as an excellent supplement to your serious wushu training. ...

Coaching Youth Soccer- A Baffled Parent-s Guide

5 stars (extremely helpful) - I am coaching my daughter's U-8 AYSO soccer team this season and was in desperate need of an easy overview of rules as well as age and skill appropriate drills for practices. This book was very helpful and I am using it as a resource. 5 stars (Very Good Beginners Book) - This is a very good book for the beginner coach or parent who wants to work with their child. I bought this to learn the basics of soccer and work with my 4.5 year old. I knew nothing of the sport and this book was a great resource for me. Plus, it has tons of great games to make practice fun on top of learning the skills. 5 stars (Coaching Bible!) - This should be mandatory reading for ALL youth team coaches, at all levels! This is the BIBLE for coaches...and many other youth sport coaches would gain a lot of wisdom reading Clarks ideas!!! ...

Ferrari - 1947-1997

5 stars (History of World Supercar Industry) - Antonio Ghini's book contains whatever lies below the "Prancing Horse" badge, for models produced in the 50 years period; moreover, it helps to understand and find answers of today's automotive & motorsports technologies' innovational questions which are solved decades before. The online version of the book is available at CuoreSPORTIVO ICEO Web Site with pictures. 2 stars (Awesome Official Account of Racing History) - This is the true story - from Enzo's days as an Alfa Romeo engineer and race mechanic, up to his death...and beyond. It's refreshing to find the story so well summed up - while it's not an unbiased account, it's exactly what you'd expect from the folks who make some of the most amazing machines on the face of this earth. What an awesome story, and great pictures to boot! 4 stars (Balanced book) - This book accomplish quite properly it mission. To give us a shallow look at the first 50 years of the make. Fearless Golf - Conquering the Mental Game

5 stars (Great book on mental game of golf ) - The mental game of book of golf is worth checking out. 5 stars (Fearless Indeed) - This book teaches you to block out all distractions. It details how to focus on the golf course and your target. You hear from many of the pro golfers from today and in the past, explaining their thought process. If you take this book seriously, it will definitely improve your mental approach to the game. 4 stars (Forget about what others think. ) - Dr. Valeante's focus on fear and mastery is unique among the mental game gurus. I've always been intrigued by how the fear of a three foot putt can paralyze a perfectly healthy man. (I've been there.) As Dr. Valiante points out, a lot of it has to do with ego. When you're preoccupied with what other people think, you can't perform up to your potential. But it's hard to escape ego-oriented thinking. The achievement orientation that's so pervasive in our society feeds into it. For better or worse, we're taught to judge people, and we subconsciously know that we're being judged. But this book will help you reframe your thinking and minimize the effects of ego on your golf game. It will help you forget about the bad shots, and focus on the positive process of improvement. There are so many books on the mental side of golf, it's getting to the point of oversaturation. They all offer good insight and helpful information, but some are more applicable than others. This one falls right about in the middle. Dr. Valiante offers plenty of antidotes from tour players to illustrate his ideas, and he makes a very important point... that every round of golf should be approached as a learning experience. ...
