1 stars (Do not buy this book) - After reading some of the reviews of this book I took a chance and bought it - and I am hugely disappointed. I made it to about page 50, when I realised I had not read even one thing of importance to myself or to any aspiring screenwriter. I hope Mckee is a good screenwriter, because he is a terrible writer. A complete waste of time and money. Eric Winter 2 stars (Write the abridged version, please.) - I am in a morgue with the author; he is conducting an autopsy. Strewn across the table lays the body of a story, bloated, maggot ridden, mouth agape, eyes bulging, staring up at me. I am gowned, goggled, gloved, a smear of vapor rub under my nose to mask the eye-watering stench. The author, scalpel and skewer in hand, slicing, jabbing, ripping, tearing, dissects the guts and organs of the story in long-winded, over-analyzed, often pointless detail; blathering story terminology, rancid lecturing, he rambles on and on, four hundred pages, which in spite of the vapor rub, still reeks of gagging boredom. Finishing, pushing the corpse off the table, sopping up the mess, trying desperately not to spit up my coffee, suddenly, to me, writing a story seems laborious and gruesome. Confused, bloodied, horrified, I think, `Can it really be this complicated?' I hope not. 5 stars (The best screenwriting book I've read) - Too many books on writing simply say "Just do it!" They tell you, quite adamantly, to "fire up your word processor and hack away at something until you come out with a story. Since you don't really know what you're doing, your story will probably be bad, but go ahead and write another one!" That kind of advice is ridiculous. You wouldn't give the same advice to an aspiring airplane pilot, or a brain surgeon, or a cop or a musician. Nor would you give it to a cabinet-maker or an auto mechanic or a house painter. Syd Field-s Screenwriting Workshop

4 stars (Excellent Stpe By Step Instructions) - Syd Field provides viewers of this "Screenwriting Workshop" with organized assignments that if followed will lead to the completion of a screenplay. Popular and easy to find movies like Shawshank Redemption, Titanic, and Thelma And Louise are used as examples to allow the viewer to see the techniques that Mr. Field competently articulates. One would be well advised to watch the DVD once in it's entirety before attempting any of the assignments to see what will be involved on the grand scale. This way you can see what you will be commiting to. Writing a screenpaly is not a formula, but formulas do exist to complete one. Consider this DVD covering Syd's techniques one of the formulas, or maybe recipe is a better analogy. Most people tweak a recipe to suit the taste of the people they are cooking for. You may tweak Syd's recipe, but if you stick to his original, step by step, you will end up cooking up a finished screenplay. Will it taste good? Well, that depends on the quality of your ingredients. Syd can't give you that. No one can. Syd does give you excellent structure. That's all he can do... and he does it well. Worth every penny. His final speech at the end of the DVD is also very inspiring and heartfelt. Thanks Syd. 5 stars (Thorough illustration of the structure and process) - If you are new to screenwriting or want an overview of what is expected by those who will read your script, this DVD is unsurpassed and complete with useful graphics and top-notch advice. I completely disagree with the 1 star review elsewhere on this page. 5 stars (Syd Field is the Best!) - I have read his books and taken his video course. They are excellent materials to study by. I would highly recommend any of his materials. Obviously the person who rated Syd Field so poorly has no idea what he is talking about - if he were such an expert on the subject he wouldn't be writing bad reviews on Amazon regarding one of the leaders ...

1 stars (Quirky program made useless by copy protection) - Buyer beware: Final Draft incorporates an archaic copy protection scheme that will drive you nuts. Every other category of computer software did away with this kind of user-unfriendly copy protection scheme in the mid-80s, but the screenwriting software vendors persist. You're probably better off using Microsoft Word (which is far more robust) and using a simple formatting utility when you're project is finished. If you have any hard drive crashes or hardware upgrades and you forget to de-install Final Draft you will lose your install keys. Tech support is scarce and the online help system is only good for the most basic information. While it should make your life simpler this product will make your life hell. Avoid it like the plague. 5 stars (Best investment I've made for writing.) - I purchased Final Draft a couple of years ago, and it was the best investment for writing I've made yet. I had loads of story ideas in my head, but had no idea how to write a screenplay or teleplay, and didn't have the patience to read a book about it. I am a VERY basic computer user and feared formatting software would be nothing short of a nightmare, but within a month I formatted three one-hour teleplays, started on a screenplay, and knew how to navigate the software fairly well. The Smart-type feature is a lifesaver, and the various view, outline, and report features are incredibly helpful and save loads of time. There are a few features that were more complicated to learn, and as an absolute novice I had some questions that I couldn't find answers for in the program, but overall - I'm thrilled with it and use it everyday. I'd recommend this software to anyone, rank amateur or paid professional ,who's looking for a user-friendly, helpful, and reliable formatting system. 5 stars (There's a reason the whole world uses it -- it's the best) - Final Draft is simply the best there is. 3 stars (To Leonard Snerdley) - First, this isn't a review of this product. I've seen alot of ridiculous things on the internet, but I came across the review by Leonard Snerdley that I just couldn't believe. Here's a quote from sNerdley "It's helped me realize that I really am a truly gifted writer...". I don't think I've seen someone that full of themselves...ever. Another quote, "But for us creative types, I guess that's not needed - we've always got new and fresh ideas!" Seriously, tell me you're kidding. Apparently not, he keeps going with "This type of thing is mainly for those of us who truly have a future in the business, not the pretenders." (sound of one man throwing up). This has to be a joke, right?! How can someone be so full of themselves while being so condescending towards everyone else on the planet that "should consider another hobby or long-term project". Looking at some of this person's other reviews I can see this guy apparently thinks he's the greatest thing in the world. His profile even screams insecure wannabe talent with "I also seem to be a lone voice of critical reason in a sea of hyperbole." I feel like I'm reading something written by Dr. Timothy Leary...one person can not seriously be this conceited and full of themselves?! 5 stars (Just might make you rich!) - For anyone who knows me, it's no secret that I would love to be a screenwriter. Will that dream ever happen? Who knows, but until it does I'm content to practice what I feel is my true gift, reviewing. But while I'm honing my craft as a reviewer, hoping to be published one day, I still like to work on my other dreams, like screenwriting (and stand-up comedy). 4 stars (A JUMP START TO MY WRITING) - I looked to this product to give me a little push and shove into writing more and organizing my thoughts. So far, it has worked out pretty well for me. It has made me consider in more detail my character developments and conflicts. Don't expect it to write for you, but if you are looking for some organization it is well worth the price. 1 stars (Junk.) - I suggest saving yourself the $34.49 and instead investing in a Bickpen and one of those little black journals we used in school. All this program is good for is keeping a record of character, plot and motivation. Frankly, all you need is a couple pieces of paper for that. 2 stars (Restrictive and time-consuming) - The problem with most novel-writing software I've been testing is that they involve a lot of "writing before the writing." While some planning is good, the amount of data entry these programs require detract from getting actual pages written, and the reality is that all those plans will likely change as you write anyway. This program is no exception. I find all the initial set-up to be cumbersome without yielding benefits that might ultimately actually streamline my process in the weeks or months ahead. (By contrast, for example, Final Draft - a screenwriting program - stores your characters' names so that you only need to type the first few letters and press Enter. You can also toggle your scenes from script to outline and back again without re-entering the information.) As for the more theoretic stuff, the story prompts are clearly taken from screenwriting which is formulaic due to the time contraints of a film. (For example, the lengths of scenes, act breaks, and total number of pages are far more restrictive to fit a 120-minute film than the scenes, chapters, and total pages of a novel.) Because a novel can be far longer than a 120-page screenplay, there's little here for creating stories with complex plots, for tracking subplots, or for creating backstory f...

5 stars (the best screenwriting package money can buy) - This package is a must have. You really feel good about spending that much money because it's a good package. I bought mine from thewritersstore.com and I got even more stuff for $199. This package is a great tool for all screenwriters. If you are having your doubts like I was about which software to get, just go with final draft and be happy. I could rave all day about this software, but the time you can spend reading this you could have already bought the thing. Go buy it. 5 stars (Screenwriting made easy) - My first screenplay was formatted manually, and I know I made some mistakes. Final Draft will help eliminate those errors. Great. I'll buy one. Check out who uses it on their website. Wow! But the software alone doesn't tell us, say, what goes where and why in a screenplay. It just lays there, blank, with blinking cursor... waiting for some brilliance to be entered by me. Enter Syd Field. I have his books on screenwriting and, although the DVD is a little 'talking head'-like, it did make me understand more about the craft of screenwriting, like plot, story structure, action points and character arcs - the things that make up a really great movie. Take notes while watching the DVD! It made me better and less insecure about taking the movie idea out of my head and Final Draft is a cool tool that formats for you and types things you type alot for you. An excellent combination!!
