Age of Empires 2 Gold

5 stars (I still love it after all these years... if you own a computer, you NEED this game.) - Age of Empires 2 was the first game I ever got for my computer. It was six years ago, I was ten. It... blew my mind, it was so amazing. I did all the campaigns, it took me about a year on again off again to beat all of them, but hey, I was ten. So then I started working on the 'random maps' in the game. The regular ones were fun, wether one-on-one, eight people in a free-for-all, or balanced teams, it was amazing. The replayability just took me aback. Deathmatches offered almost instant action, giving players hoards of rescources, allowing them to concentrate on militarisation rahter than their economy. But my favourite type of game was Regicide. Each player gets a King and a Castle at the beginning, and you're defeated once your King dies. This beacame a game of cat-and-mouse, building castles wherever I could and always moving the King, trying to protect his royal [if inept] majesty from hoards of bloodthirsty enemies all vying to deliver his crown to their own soverign. All marvelous fun. And I haven't even begun to comment on the system itself. Each of the four ages, dark, feudal, castle, and imperial, represent disticnt points in history. For example, cavalry is not available in the Dark age, and only weak scouts in the Feudal age. The Castle age brings with it heavily armoured knights, as well as horse archers to harass enemy villagers and cripple their economies. And this is just cavalry. Archers, infantry, and siege weapons evolve dramatically as you progress, from rag-tag Militia wielding simple clubs, to the menacing Champions armed with monstrous two-handed swords, and this is just Infantry. Also, each of the 13 civilizations has its own benefits, such as the Turks' cheaper gunpowder units or the Fraknish bonuses to knight hitpoints. In addition, each civilization gets one [some even get two] unique units, which only they can produce. The By...

The Matrix Online

4 stars (If you're a Matrix fan, this might be for you. Otherwise....) - If you're a fan of the Matrix, you'll appreciate that this game is about as close as we can come to bringing the movie to life. Hundreds or thousands of people, all connected to the same virtual environment - in essence, "jacked in" to the Matrix. Without going into enormous detail, let me just say that the world of the Matrix is huge and there are many, many different things to do and explore. The system of movement and (especially) combat is difficult at first, but after a period of adjustment, it becomes very easy to operate. The best part is that you can participate in the continuation of the Matrix story. If you didn't find enough resolution at the end of the third movie, this is your chance to find out what happens next. Now for the bad news. The MegaCity in the Matrix is rampant with street gangs. At first, ALL of them are tougher than you. This tends to restrict the areas you have access to. As you progress in the game, you earn experience points which will eventually raise your character to a higher level (you start at level 1 and max out at level 50). The higher your level, the tougher your character. This isn't really the bad news. The bad news is the incredible amount of time it takes to raise your levels. They go quickly at first, but soon it takes several hours of committed gameplay to raise yourself even one level. That in itself wouldn't be such a problem, but you can't really participate in the major live events unless you attain a very high level. THE BOTTOM LINE: The game will be a rewarding experience to fans of the Matrix who won't mind the level of commitment required to progress in the game. Those who don't care about the story of the Matrix are likely to become frustrated early on. However, if you're curious about the game, it's only $30 and that comes with a free month of gameplay. A month is plenty of time to find out whether or not you're willing to pay $15 ...

Galactic Civilizations Deluxe

5 stars (Strategy Game Star Trek) - Here is a simple galactic conquest stategy game that allows you to play in spurts if you can tear yourself away from it. It's just complex enough to allow you to become immursed in it. The AI is intelligent enough to provide a challenge. 1 stars (Terrible AI won't even bother to attack you) - Galactic Civilizations is the junk food of 4x games. It's filling and comfortably familar, but after awhile you realize it's making you sick. It's basically what you would expect if you took every successful 4x game and merged them together, but with no regards for balance or gameplay. The feature list looks impressive, until you realize half the features are broken or unbalanced. Here's a sample game I played once I realized how broken things were: Normal difficulty/Small Map Right away I colonized 2 systems. I did nothing except change research, occasionally build a building, and hit next turn. I did not build any attack/defense ships. This went on until near the end of the research tree(!), when finally the AI attacked. I built ships to defend, but I was overwhelmed as you would expect. Then they ground invaded. Carrier of 5 million lost for them, killed 3 million of mine, repeat. Sounds bad since I only had 2 planets, right? Well unfortunately the pop of my planet they were invading was 100 billion. They couldn't conceiveably wipe me out since they couldn't make transports fast enough. Why are transports "used up" when you attack anyway? So after a few hundred attempts they seemed to give up then space sharks were randomly spawned. Since I had no ships they didn't attack me, and instead wiped out both the remaining ai player's fleets. I couldn't invade for the same reasons they couldn't invade me though, so I just waited to see what would happen. Eventually I was given one of the AI's systems. Turns out I had set some money in "destabilize" a few dozen turns ago. I pumped up the amount of money i was spending on it, to ...

Return To Mysterious Island

4 stars (Captivating...even if too short) - This game held my interest. Some of the puzzles are complicated. I don't even know how I completed one. I was just guessing and clicking. I was very shocked when the game ended. It is a very short game. It held my interest and I thought about the combinations I could try even when I wasn't playing! My 9 year old is playing it. It should have a rating in between T and E. The violence is minimal at the most. 4 stars (Return to Mysterious Island) - I thought this was a interesting game with some real twist, figuring out how to make all the weapons was a real challange. 5 stars (One of the best out there) - Though not as grand as Syberia 2, or as visually stunning as Myst 4, this is one of the best games I've ever played. The story is intriqueing, the interface is simple and the item collection and assembly is a joy. My only complaint is that it seems too short. A bargain at twice the price. ...

Star Wars Republic Commando

4 stars (Lots of fun, where's part 2?) - This is an immensely satisfying journey through the life of a Clone Commando, the elite units in the Clone Wars. Featuring fantastic squad-level action, the game shows you parts of Star Wars that you've been wanting to see for years. Your three squadmates are realized expertly, with convincing AI and squad tactics, as well as engaging animation and voice work. However, be aware that this game is reasonably short, rather easy, and ends with a Halo 2 style "Part I" cliffhanger that leaves you wondering when the next one came out, and why they didn't just print "Part I" right there on the box. 5 stars (STAR WARS REPUBLIC COMMANDO) - This game was really fun. I think that it's the best game that they have come out with for Star Wars. It has really good graphics and phrases. Please be aware that you have to have a video card that supports vertex shading, if not, the game won't run. Overall, this game was the BOMB!!! 5 stars (Much better than the movie, Excellent Single Player) - This game produced the most enjoyable experience since Half Life 2. I generally play first-person-shooter once or twice, then never play again; not this game. I only bought it becase it seemed similar to "Brothers in Arms" with its squad-leader element. I was not expecting much as I normally enjoy WWII-style games (I also loathed the latest three Star Wars films) but was very suprised how good it really was. From the beginning, I could sense the high production values. The story line, dialogue, and voice acting were excellent, especially for a video game. I felt I got to know my squadmates in Republic Commando much better than in Brothers in Arms. There were lots of little touches and polish that made it enjoyable to play through many times. Music, top-notch. I don't know if the music is from the films, but it shares the same epic quality. Graphics and effects were well done and ran very well with no stutters, crashes, or lag, even on the hig...

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic

5 stars (great GAME!) - THIS GAME IS VERY GOOD BUT ONCE YOU PLAY IT THE 100 TIME IT GETS KINDA BORING.I PLAY THIS GAME ON 2 COMPUTERS.MY LAPTOP WICH DOSENT MEET REQUIMENTS BUT STILL WORKS.IT SEEMS TO RUN ALMOST EVERY THING I PUT ON IT EVEN RUNS DOS.ITS BRAND NEW MADE IN 2005!but my destop greatly surpasses the requiments.its 5 years old it runs everything eceapt the older games 1990s under but thats normal. We just got a new G card in our computer because the last one got fried it has the same power but more memory.Overall play this on a fast computer it dosent work good on slow computers. 5 stars (Wow! What a game.) - I picked this game up from all the praise that it recieved from a couple of years ago. In my opinion it is one of the best role playing games right up there with FF VII, Chrono Trigger, and XenoGears. This game falls into the category of an action role playing game since you are able to move around in combat rather than just standing and exchanging hits. In this game you can create what character that you want to be. This was the RPG for the X-Box that you decided your own fate. Like any other RPG you pick up characters and weapons/items along your journey. Along the way you'll have questions answered that takes this game for a wild turn. In other words, this story line is one of the best for any Role playing game in quite a while. This game is so much fun that words cannot describe. My only complaint of this game was the controls. But like any other game, the more you play the more you get used to. This game is worth the purchase. It also sets up for the sequel quite nicely. 5 stars (Give it 10 stars!) - This game is the BEST game I ever played! it is a RPG game.. It has a great storyline! Here are the pros and cons: Pros: Great storyline. Super graphics. Very unique charicters. You can build your own Lightsabers, upgrade armor, weapons. You can choose the path of Light or Dark from the way you act (being mean, nice, to N...

Star Wars Galaxies- The Total Experience

5 stars (A Rookie's First Look At Online Gaming) - When I a little concerned when I read all of the negative comments about Star Wars Galaxies until I recognized a common theme. The people spewing the negative rants were all players who suffered in some way or other from the Combat Upgrade. This was a major sea change in SWG that was aimed at standardizing some areas of the game and eliminating inequities that granted unfair advantages to those who had been exploiting them. Based on my experience, it seemed that the anti-SWG constituency had also had their "oxen gored" by the changes. While I am sympathetic to their plight (although I have little patience with so-called "power gamers" who get caught with their hands in the cookie jar), the post-Combat Upgrade world would be the only SWG that I would ever know. In other words, the game would be what it was when I joined. It's much like the old joke about how many San Francisco 49er fans it would take to change a light bulb? One to install the bulb and three to stand around and talk about how great the old bulb used to be. Once I decided to join, it went as smoothly as I could have ever wanted. Although I had never played an MMORPG, the installation, setup and character creation were a snap. The game graphics are excellent and the theme music by John Williams is excellent. Because of the fluid nature of this type of game, the manual is, by necessity, broadly written and strategy guids are of limited usefullness. Although, there is an excellent in-game Help feature (the Holocron), the very best way to figure out things that have you stumped is to make friends. I admit to becoming very frustrated by undocumented problems until I asked an obviously experienced character for help. He responded with patience and good humor at the dumb rookie questions I threw his way and actually seemed to enjoy helping me along. We have since become good friends in the game and I can always rely on him for a helping hand ...

Halo- Combat Evolved

4 stars (Good Game, But Not As Good As The Xbox Version !!!!!!!!!) - I'm not the biggest PC gamer, I usually stick to my Xbox, but I must say this version has way better graphics, along with new weapons like the fuel rod cannon, and the flamethrower. Yet, the campaign mode is really no different from the Xbox version at all, and really you need some real advanced hardware as well, to play this game. The timing was off to now you have games like Half Life 2, Unreal, and Doom 3 out, on the PC as well as Far Cry and Call of Duty, really not the best timing since the Xbox version has been out now for 2 years. Yes the multi player has lots of cool options, with online options. The problem is that the online system doesn't work that well at all, and they also eliminated co op from the multi player options. The multi player on the pc version is just terrible, and is stripped down compared too the console version. So all you have is the single player campaign mode which is only 10 levels and about 12-14 hours of gameplay unless you put the game in Heroic mode. So after you beat the game their is no multi player fun at all, and there is no way to set up LAN parties and such with the pc version. Well, if you look past the flaws, the campaign mode is fun and has a edge graphic wise over the Xbox version, along with the Flamethrower and Fuel Rod Cannon, which were both nice toys. I will admit the controls on the PC version are easier than I would expect since I'm usually a system gamer. What can I say if you own a Pc and you don't own the Xbox, get the PC version, but if you are given a choice between the two I would still choose the Xbox version though, because it has more beyond the campaign mode. Halo is still a great game no matter what system it's on. The game will sometimes freeze up too which I didn't like. Overall, I will give the PC version of Halo a 4/5,... great game but can't out shine the Xbox version!!! -Rogue Fox "Rogue" 3 stars (Well...) - It was good. I ...

Evil Genius

2 stars (Management) - This is a brilliant game -- conceptually. The problem is squarely with the owner of the company. Somewhere he/she trusted a core developer. You've got great EVERYTHING, art/concepts, everything except programming. You WANT this game to succeed. But game drags and the problem is in the game core. It's irritating to the extreme trying to do anything. The agents move faster than the mouse and I have a 1.6 Ghz machine! They insist that you buy hardware to make up for their bad game core! We can only hope that the game is bought by another company, dumping the boss and his tech friend, and is rewritten in a form that actually works. Or, of course, if you have a 64 meg graphics card, and whatever else the game needs to make up for it's core failures, then you can enjoy it's genius. 1 stars ( Evil Genius is possibly the buggiest program since WindowsME) - I got Evil Genius from my local retailer, and it seemed like a unique concept, but to say that it has a few bugs is like saying Michael Jackson is only a a little bit white. It seems to install fine, but when you try to play the game, it restarts my PC. Ok, so I un-installed it, and tried again only to have same problem. I F-Disk and re-install windows and make sure all of my drivers are up-to-date... try again and still same problem. We were told to "wait for the patch", which we patiently did, but still the same issue. The people who were lucky enough to actually get into the game, found a slew of other bugs. My local retailer would not take the game back due to the "opened software policy" and the folks over at the Vivendi technical boards act as if they could care less, so I guess I am out $30. I never thought I'd say this about ANY software.... but this makes Windows ME look like a programming masterpiece. I have since used my Evil Genuis cds as a doggie chew-toy, because that's about all it's good for. 3 stars (Fun at first yet....) - Fun at first yet the gam...
