ScanSoft Dragon NaturallySpeaking 8 Preferred

4 stars (students should think first before buying it) - This product works very good, as advertised. However, I bought it in hope to use it for my classes. I was using it with Sony ICD-P210 Voice Recorder. Unfortunately, it doesn't work if you record from your desk, even if you sit very close to the teacher (I've tried both Standard and High Quality recording). So if you want to use this program to recognize your teacher's speech, you will have to ask him to wear a microphone, and to hold your recorder in his pocket, and not to move a lot. For most of my teachers, it is not acceptable. Good luck! 4 stars (Memory Hog) - This is a great product. I bought because I am working full-time and going to grad school at night. I have significantly reduced the time required to produce cousework. Comments: 1) I have 1.12 GB of RAM, about 6 paragraphs of dictation kills the memory. I tried using it with 256 MB of RAM and immediately upgraded. 2) Be patient. The software gets better at recognizing your voice. I have found after about 6 paragraphs of dictation it does not recognize my voice as well. Other then that, it's truely amazing. If you were wondering, I am currently typing this out. I was writing a paper and killed the memory with Dragon. ScanSoft OmniPage 15 OCR

1 stars (Unstable, expensive support) - I purchased this product two weeks ago to convert some PDF files to searchable format. When I could get the OCR to start it did a good job of converting the text. The interface was difficult to use, and in about 20% of the runs the application would hang before beginning the conversion. When I attempted to use set up batch scans the system crashed while I was configuring it in 100% of the runs. I would have reported the problem to technical support, but the publisher charges per incident. To be fair they do offer to wave the charge for the first incident, but since the program crashed in the first five minutes of use it seemed like I would be contacting support more than once. I finally took advantage of the 30-day money back guarantee (I'd highly recommend checking that this applies if you're thinking about buying the program) and purchased Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.0 instead. 4 stars (Appears to be a significant improvement over OmniPage 14) - I have just purchased this upgrade, so the following comments should be viewed as preliminary. Still, some information is better than none. Having used OmniPage since its beginning, I have been irritated by the company's practice of releasing software before it has driven the bugs out. That does not appear to be a problem in this case. The software loaded cleanly and came up and works properly. As one would expect after 15 shots at it, character recognition is generally excellent. The big advance is in speed of operation. Compared to ver. 14, this version flies, which will probably be the improvement of greatest interest to users. The interface remains non-user-friendly. New users will go crazy trying to figure out how to use it, but once you do, it's worth it. ...

Omnipage Pro X

1 stars (Don't waste your money) - Doesn't seem to work under 10.3. No patches from omnipage either. 2 stars (Doesn't satisfy this long-time user) - I've used Omnipage for years, going through almost all the versions since the first. When an upgrade appeared it consistently offered incremental improvements and I rarely had to even glance at the user's manual. Not so with this version. In some key respects it is not apparent how it works even after consulting the manual. There are many more errors in text and formatting. Saves don't even go smoothly. I would guess that something that formerly took me 45 minutes now takes me several hours, including corrections. And I still don't know why the text selection doesn't flow from one page to the next in a multi-page document, as it used to. This product should have been put in the "leave well enough along category." ...

Textbridge Pro 11

1 stars (textbridge pro 11 is not worth it) - I purchased this program with the intention of entering a bunch of typewritten pages into my computer. The document that this program produced from newly typed material was so full of errors that I simply had to re-type. It would have taken longer to correct than to re-type. When I talked to Textbridge about these problems all they would tell me is that the program was not meant for such use and that I should buy one of their other programs which had good optical character recognition capabilities. In other words, they know the product is not any good and they are not willing to stand behind it. The program is useless for optical character recognition work or anything else. 1 stars (Horrible is a Compliment) - This product simply does not produce accurate results. It skips entire lines, words on the same line, and misreads even the most legible characters. It came bundled with my scanner, so at least I did not waste my money on it. Dragon NaturallySpeaking 8 Professional Upgrade from Preferred Versions 6-8

5 stars (Great program perfect for the disabled - enjoy handsfree) - If you're reading this. You are interested in buying Dragon NaturallySpeaking version eight if you are. I highly recommend it! I had versions of Dragon software, dating back to 1995. Let me tell you the software was clunky back then, being a quadriplegic, I used it to type and move the mouse. But as soon as I got a touchpad mouse. I dropped Dragon altogether. Step forward almost 10 years, I decided that I needed to send longer e-mails than two sentences (because that's all I could type, it gets tiring using only one hand and one knuckle on that hand). So I took the plunge drop the cash on Dragon, and after three days am totally satisfied. I added up and running and dictating in less than 20 minutes. The accuracy is amazing I'm actually typing this by voice. Since I can use a touchpad, I do not use the Dragon NaturallySpeaking for mouse commands. But for dictating it is perfect and quick!!! I'm using it with a 2 GHz processor, and it is fine. Getting it set up was a little quirky with my Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS. I'm actually using it with a tabletop condenser microphone, not the heads that they came with it (which I found to be quite uncomfortable). Since I'm unable to get the headset on my head, but a tabletop mike is working perfect. So I recommend this product anyone who has a disability that makes typing difficult. Anybody who doesn't want to learn to type (though I think he would be lazy, just suck it up and learn). The software is leaps and bounds above previous versions go for it! Enjoy! ...

ScanSoft Dragon Naturally Speaking 8 Standard

5 stars (Finally speech recognition that works) - Dragon NaturallySpeaking 8 is not perfect, but I believe it is as close as possible with today's technology. In fact, upgrading your hardware may be the best way to improve the performance. It happily eats up all the processing power I throw at it, and then some. But the result is better dictation that some office workers could have taken. It misunderstands from time to time, but at least it can spell even long and unusual words. The included headset is of poor quality and should be replaced as soon as possible. This has been the case all the way from version 5 when I first bought it. I have no idea why they would ruin their own reputation to pinch a few pennies like that. It would have been wiser to ship it without hardware at all: This is really a software product, after all. Personally I use a USB headset from Plantronics with very good results. It also works well with a common vocal performance microphone. Coincidentally it will also understand you if you sing... 5 stars (This Rocks) - Much better than previous versions. The engine is cleaner, more precise. Definitely worth upgrading from older versions. 4 stars (Excellent product) - As I sit here with my arm in a cast I am dictating this review using the Dragon software. It installed easily. The orientation was well worth it. The program works, very, very well. ScanSoft PaperPort 10

1 stars (A note to those thinking of Buying 9 instead of 10...) - Scansoft paperport 9 will not install with Windows XP service pack 2. They also is no fix for this. I've googled, gone to various forums and there is no fix. The official company site simply "advises" you to get Paperport 10 if you wish to have it work with Windows XP Service pack 2. 1 stars ( ScanSoft PaperPort 10 - Thumbs Down) - Many years ago, I switched from Papermaster to Paperport 7.0. The difference was so dramatic that I fell in love with Paperport right away. Since then I have upgraded as each new version was released. Paperport 9.0+ turned out to be the best that ScanSoft released. Version 10 has many problems including ease of use, missing features, instability when printing from an external document. My suggestion to those who have verson 9 is to keep it, and those contemplating purchasing Paperport for the first time, invest in version 9. It is still available many places on the web including Amazon.com 1 stars (ALL DOWNHILL FOR VERSION 10) - I HAVE USED PAPERPORT FOR THE LAST 7 YEARS. ScanSoft PaperPort Professional 10

1 stars (Simply not usable from a scanning perspective.) - As one reader suggested: revert back to v8! I bought a Brother MFC that inlcuded PaperPort 8, because I wanted to utilise the ADF to get my documents onto disks, rather than floating around in the office. The software was a charm. Just put the documents into the ADF of the MFC, press Scan to file, and off it goes. I can't recall for what reason I upgraded to v9, but this was the end of being able to use the "Scan to File" function. I bought a new PC running XP. Installed v9, and had the same problem: no "Scan to file" functionality. I installed XP SP2 and the frustration kicked in. Now the software did not even work. ScanSoft advised on their web site that v10 would be required to run on XP SP2. I bought it, and guess what: scanning would not work properly. 1. "Scan to file" still does not work! 2. Scanning multiple documents does not work at all, no matter which way it is being intitiated, or whether PaperPort of SmartScan is being used. v9 and v10 are not worth the money, let alone the time wasted Google-ing around to find answers to the problem, with ScanSoft simply not carying at all. Their suggested fix of enabling Data Execution Prevention (except for PaperPort) did not make a difference!! Buy something else! I will see how how I go with v8. But v10 will be uninstalled! Buyer beware! There is much harsher critique out there... and I agree: ScanSoft does not deserve my business! 2 stars (Back to Paperport 9) - I'm a huge fan of Paperport 9; I use it extensively. I was excited to see an upgrade and recently installed PaperPort 10. While the split screen and other features are a nice improvement, the software seems very buggy. The biggest problem for me is that I can no longer scan multiple page items using an HP OfficeJet scanner. 5 stars (The Dragon listens) - Voice recognition software has come a long way. I began by trying the voice recognition engine in XP Professional, but was not pleased with the accuracy. Dragon has it together. It works. This version has definitely improved upon previous ones. They obviously have the engineering staff to do the job. OmniForm 5 0

4 stars (Missing some features, has a learning curve, overall good) - I really like OmniForm 5. Actually I'm using version 5.1 and I'm very satisfied with it. I was using another forms program I had purchased that was adequate but not nearly as good. After using FormTool I have a much greater appreciation of OmniForm. ScanSoft has been on my list of not to buy software recently because of some of the poor performance of some of their other programs, tech support is expensive from ScanSoft and none of their software that I have used have been easy to learn using the manuals or help files. In contrast OmniForm was well worth the money. OmniForm 5 does a great job of either creating forms from scratch, scanning or converting from PDF. It's the only forms program I have tried so far that actually does a great job of importing a form from a PDF file. Its has all the tools you need to create a form starting with a blank page. You can define any field with a variety of formats. Example you can create a date field with a specific format then no matter how the data is input the program will automatically reformat the data the way you specified. You can create just about any field simply by dragging a symbol from a menu onto the page. In the case of inserting a graphic you can choose to have the graphic saved with the form or not saving with the form itself to conserve file size. You can have the graphic resized by the program with little loss of quality. Features such as these might be available in other programs of this type but I found OmniForm to do the best job with creating a form field by field with the least effort. Scanning in of a form is almost flawless. It even recognized fields on the paper form that were meant to be circled and created the field for them. 4 stars (ViaVoice - easier than I thought.) - This program works better than I expected. I only took a short time to get my voice set up. I didn't clock it, so I might have taken more time than I thought, but I was enjoying the experience, so It was not difficult. If you have trouble typing and want a great program to help you easily produce text documents, You'll love this program. 5 stars (A great invention!) - This is a great item. It is fun to use. It works very well for me. It is easy enough to set up. Then with patience and doing a little reading to help program it you can use it quite efficiently. And it is easy to transfer to another place like wordpad or emails. I found that I could send longer emails to my mom because all I had to do is speak my thoughts out loud!!! If your words dont come through clearly just do a little reading again. 1 stars (ViaVoice - very disappointing) - You don't get your money's worth with ViaVoice. At first, it seemed to work fine. Contrary to what the program is supposed to do, the more I used it, the worse it got. "Training" the software is extremely time consuming. However, I did this in hopes of improving its performance. Unfortunately, after spending all the time doing that, it was actually worse, not better. It has finally gotten so bad I cannot use the application at all. As I am dictating, it throws in random words which can't possibly have anything to do with what I am saying, some of them foreign. Dictate, "Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country," and you are likely to get "Avarice now is the Bois time for all good men to Gwendolyn." 4 stars (Good product - mostly. Bad company - maybe.) - Overall, this is a good product - with a few kinks. I agree with the one reviewer who commented on the lack of product support. The online PDF file just does not cut it. It tells you many things that the software can do but then fails to provide the "how to." Granted, it is a fairly simple program but the documentation is still lacking. The knowledge base is also less than adequate. As another reviewer mentioned, I also was unable to preserve links in any document conversion I tried - yes, I checked the document settings. When you go to the ScanSoft knowledge base and type in "link", you are presented with two solutions that simply do not work. I eventually found that the way to get the links to work - converting or printing from any source - was to 1) get the document converted over into PDF using PDF Converter Pro 2) manipulate and edit the document to your liking in PDF Converter Pro - they do have some get features here that blow Adobe away when you consider the price and the software footprint 3) save the document as PDF 4) then open the document up in Adobe Reader 7. Adobe Reader recognizes the links, PDF Converter Pro does not - this is a severe mistake on ScanSoft's part and you will not find this solution in their knowledge base (at least not at this time). For a while, I had PDF Converter Pro act as my default PDF reader, but then found it did not open links - went back to Adobe Reader - ScanSoft is now just an intermediary tool when they could have been a real challenge to Adobe.
