Robert-s Rules of Order Newly Revised in Brief Roberts Rules of Order in Brief

5 stars (Buy this one first) - Even though I have both the "in Brief" and the unabridged editions, it is only the "in Brief" edition that I take with me to my meetings. I recommend that you buy and read the "in Brief" edition first. 5 stars (User-friendly meeting guide) - This has to be the most user-friendly book I've seen, starting with the inside of the front cover. It says, "If you only have 30 minutes" then read certain chapters. Somehow these experts figured out what the rest of us would need to know and how we would be looking for it. Maybe they had a panel of non-experts to critique. There are chapters detailing what the words are that you use to make something happen and how to use those words. Best of all, everywhere you look there are copious examples. In the back are succinct tables of those same words and there is also a chapter on how to find the completely complete information on the topic in the big "Robert's" book Most of the book is concerned with what you need to know as a member of the group. There are separate chapters for an officer of the group, which contain the things that most of us don't need to know. This is not a book you'd save for a winter evening curled up in front of the fireplace. It's to tell you all sorts of things you'd really rather not have to know, but that you really need to know. I've already decided that mine is mine alone. Nobody is going to borrow it because it would never come back to me. ...

5 stars ( Rules for Writers ) - The book is a required book for class. It looks to be an excellent resource book. It came in great condition and timely fashion. It looks to be an easy read and easy reference. 5 stars (THE book on writing properly) - This is arguably one of the most well-written books on the subject of writing that I've seen thus far. The author provides the reader with a comprehensive set of tools, definitions and mechanics that are essential in most every form of writing. While this book is well-aimed towards those who write academic papers or journalistic publications, ` Rules for Writers ' will help improve the writing skills of those who communicate with others via email or who wish to acquire skills in writing professional business letters. The chapters are easily laid out and will help a reader regardless of whether the entire book is to be read from beginning to end, or if a specific subject is sought (punctuation, etc). This book has helped me with my academic writing and I highly recommend it for those who regularly write essays or other forms of correspondence. 3 stars ("For students" is right) - While this may indeed be handy for students working on papers, I found it too cumbersome for daily on-the-job reference. My fault for buying it without giving it a thorough look. The detailed index is nicely done. This one will go back to the store, to be replaced with Karen Gordon's Transitive Vampire. Meanwhile, I'll stick with Strunk. ...

2 stars (My Review) - Some peopel may find this book useful. I am just begining to learn the APA format and I did not find this book to be user friendly. I have had better information given to me from handouts from other books. 5 stars (Critical Information for Writing for the APA Publications) - The first question you'd have to ask about this book is Why would the American Psychological Association have a style guide. The answer is that the APA Style is the definitive guide to the style that the APA wants to see in their publications and this style is also used by a number of other publications that have adopted the APA Style. Among the critical points of the APA Style is how to construct an error-free reference list crediting all sources properly and avoiding all charges of plagiarism. This has become extremely critical in today's world where any research seems subject to actively looking for any way they can discredit someone else rather than do their own work. In addition the style book is an authoritative guide to how best to present the ideas and data that is so hard to gather. Being able to present data in a way that is understandable to the reader is perhaps the most difficult yet the most important part of writing a paper. This book is the concise version. How to Become a Great Boss- The Rules for Getting and Keeping the Best Employees

1 stars (If you want to become a great boss, don't read this) - Fox uniquely attempts to give suggestions on how to keep the best employees. Fox divides his book into fifty short stories that sometimes include a real life situation. Many of his anecdotes have serious flaws in the basic principles of Organizational Behavior, while others do not fully explain how to handle potential problems. There are instances where his suggestions can be very useful in becoming a good manager. At other times, his stories have good concepts, but do have loopholes. If you were interested in only seeing a small picture of the steps to becoming a great manager, then I would recommend this book to you. Fo'xs numerous weaknesses on motivation make me believe that he does not understand some of the basic concepts of motivation. Furthermore, his continual discussion of avoiding mishires, without any description on how to do that, further weakens his arguments. I believe this book is for more experienced managers and educated employees who know to extrapolate the good ideas in the book, and ignore the bad. 2 stars (Very General ) - These are the basics... Some mangers probably need this but I would like to think that most are beyond this kind of general and obvious information. I got this book on CD and it was boring, I hate to imagine what it would be like to have read it. 5 stars (From the Publisher) - This is the classic work on parlimentary procedure as it was originally published. 1 stars (Robert's Rules download of an ANCIENT edition) - This download is of no value because it does not tie in directly with the most current version of Robert's Rules. It is vital that the same edition of Robert's Rules by used by a group, to prevent confusion over pages, wording, interpretations, etc. The publication date is from the late 1800's and therefore not at all worthwhile for contemporary useage. I thought this was too good to be true, a searchable copy of Robert's Rules for under $5 and I was right. It is worthless, except for historical research. ...

Strategy as Simple Rules HBR OnPoint Enhanced Edition

4 stars (Simple rules instead of positioning and core competencies?!?) - Harvard Business Review article, published in the January 2001 issue, by Kathleen Eisenhardt, Professor of Strategy and Organization at Stanford University, and Donald Sull, Assistant Professor at Harvard Business School. The authors start the article with describing the success story of Internet portal Yahoo! Some critize Yahoo for lacking a strategy altogether, but according to the authors Yahoo follows 'strategy as simple rules'. Strategy as simple rules and its underlying logic of pursuing opportunities are harder to see than traditional approaches. The authors compare the logic, steps, source of advantage, risks and performance goals between Michael Porter's positioning school, Hamel & Prahalad's competence/resource-based management, and 'strategy as simple rules', which works best in rapidly changing, ambiguous markets. "Managers using this strategy pick a small number of strategically significant processes and craft a few simple rules to guide them. The key strategic processes should place the company where the flow of opportunities is swiftest and deepest." The authors provide a useful table summarizing the types of simple rules for the different aspects of seizing opportunities (how-to, boundary, priority, timing, and exit rules). It is important that managers use the right number of rules, which should be between two and seven. Too few rules can result in ineffective execution of innovative ideas, too many rules can keep organization from competing effectively in turbulent markets. So where do these rules come from? In most cases, they grow out of experiences, especially mistakes. The authors use Yahoo!, Cisco, and Enron as examples. Information Rules- A Strategic Guide to the Network Economy

5 stars (A Must Read for Internet Entrepreneurs) - Although this book was written in 1998, it is just as relevant if not more so today. The book discusses how Internet entrepreneurs should price their goods/services; how they can create lock-in effects to instill customer loyalty; and perhaps most importantly, how they can create network effects so as to exponentially increase their client base and barriers to entry. A brilliant book written by two leading authorities on economics. 3 stars (Approaches management problems from an economic standpoint) - The authors say that the circumstances of one era may be unique, but the underlying principles that govern the exchange of goods in a free-market economy are the same. The book is about the economy rather than managing information itself. 2 stars (Really?) - The book starts by proclaiming that neo-classical economics is adequate for explaining the information economy. This claim is not backed up in the book. First, textbook neo-clasical equilibrium theory contains neither money nor 'information'. Second, the book merely discusses qualitatively and nonsystematically ideas like positive feedback and increasing returns that were better presented by Brian Arthur. Third, even asymmetric information is not discussed (Ackerlof and Stiglitz are not even mentioned). Fourth (or zeroth), there is not a single empirical graph in the entire book, and nothing of modern ideas of network theory. So I would say that the book is more or less on the same level as Kelly's (pre-bubble-bust) "New Rules for the New Economy". All of these books implicitly hype the unregulated free market, in the face of both qualitative and empirical evidence that unregulated markets are not only unstable but are detrimental to human health and well-being. ...
