1 stars (Disappointing from a nutritional perspective) - Let me start by saying I'm a big Bill Phillips fan. Did he actually write this book, or was his name just slapped on the cover? The recipes are a far cry from what any health conscious person would call "healthy" or even "good food". They are full of pre-packaged ingredients, which contain a ton of hidden fats, sodium, and preservatives. (I'm sure this is why no one bothered to add the nutritional values) Where are the fresh fruits and vegetables? Whatever happened to using common sense in determining a healthful, well-balanced diet? What on earth is a butter bud, and why would I want it in my Body For Life?? I guess this might be a step up for anyone that lives on takeout and has never learned the proper way to prepare a meal, but unless you really enjoy the taste of preservatives, this is probably not the book for you. If you're really committed to healthful living and eating, invest in a good whole foods cookbook instead, and leave this one on the shelf. 5 stars (Excellent advice and recipes) - This book is fantastic. I've been a fan of Bill Philips since reading Body for Life, and Eating for Life takes it one step further. Every recipe I have tried so far has been a success - tasty and easy to make. The dinners are all complete meals, so you don't have to worry about choosing side dishes, etc. The total time to make the meals are listed with each recipe, and so far have been accurate. Many "healthy" cookbooks I have bought in the past seemed like they were not written for real people. The recipes tend to be complex, timely to make, with hard to find ingredients. This book, on the other hand, has recipes that are simple to make, with ingredients you can find at any grocery store. Also, because he uses a lot of the same seasonings in different recipes, it doesn't cost a fortune trying to buy all new spices. Body for Life- 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength

4 stars (Thank you Bill) - The approach presented by Bill Phillips in "Body for Life" worked fine for me. However, the problem is that you have to have a real commitment and a really strong will power to follow the regime presented by the author. Also, in my opinion, there is too much focus on the looks and too little on the health. I think the latter is more important than the former. I have recently found a book that shifts the attention more towards health and overall wellbeing and it gives you no trouble whatsoever to follow simple rules for food combinations, body cleansing etc. Although I have a lot of respect for Bill Phillips as my first coach I think that "Can We Live 150 Year"s is a superior book to "Body for Life". Sorry Bill. 5 stars (My second copy of this book!) - A terrific book and a great program. This book is actually my second copy, since my first copy completely fell apart after so much use. It is truly a fantastic way to get in shape. I had suffered a couple of serious injuries and have been unable to work out much for the last year, but before the injuries I was well on my way to transforming my body for life. Now, I'm mended and ready to start all over again. It's amazing to see how quickly this program changes your body - with much less effort and sacrifice than a lot of other "get fit quick" programs. The eating for life portion of the book is a little tough to follow at times, since I do enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine now and then, but I just modify it, work out a little harder and enjoy my little treat now and then anyway. The free day allows you to eat whatever you want once a week so you don't feel too deprived, but I found that after you start seeing the changes in your body, you'll be reluctant to just pig out. It's nice to treat yourself without feeling guilty. Body for Life for Women- A Woman-s Plan for Physical and Mental Transformation

4 stars (A real tool for attaining health and fitness for life) - Body for Life for Women should be considered an essential guide for women's preventive heath. Because it is focused specifically on the unique health and fitness needs and problems encountered by women, it is much more valuable for women than general health or diet texts. While it promotes a plan of "12 weeks to a fabulous body"; to see it as a mere diet or fitness book sells short its real value. A diet book may help us (temporarily) lose a few pounds; this book aims to show us how to create a healthy body in which we can live independently throughout our lives. As a spokesperson on health, Dr. Peeke is the real thing. She is an expert on the most current understanding of nutrition, preventive health and women's issues. The book is well written, inspiring and accessible. It gives women, especially those of us over 40, real hope and guidance as we wonder why "what we have always done" to stay fit is not working any more. I found especially interesting the section on life milestones, which describes a woman's health priorities at each stage of life. The mind principles, which urge us to examine the attitudes that shape our behavior, are a wake-up call. Dr. Peeke is a big fan of the Nike slogan "Just Do It". In this book, she tells us exactly what it is that we must just do and provides the tools and motivation to keep doing it. 5 stars (You won't believe it!) - I have completed my 12 week program and am astounded by the results. I'm 53 and a dancer but I never thought my body would return to this level of fitness. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Men-s Health The Book of Muscle

5 stars (A surprisingly good book) - I wasn't really looking for much out here, but was pleasantly surprised with the quality and content of the book. I have been doing weight lifting for many years, and have bought all sorts of books, and this is the only book that sounds complete and reliable. The book also has 18 months of chalked out routine which are quite easy to follow. I have been through all sorts of training programmes, and the authours of each book claim that they have "something real" that the other writers don't. They openly bash each other. OK, now here's the truth. Any programme will work for beginners, whether its superslow or Brawn. The truth is that you got to go to the gym and lift. So, if any programme works, why not use the one thats presented in this book? Its carefully planned out, time-tested and lasts for 18 months (others just last for 12 weeks or so and then they leave you hanging in air). My advice, get this book and start working out. You won't loose. All the nest! 5 stars (Great training book) - I got a supplement of this book with a copy of mens healt a few years ago. It was my bible for training until one day my car was stolen with the supplement in it. I was lost without it until I bought the full book from amazon recently. It is a great training aid for those who are serious about training but need a little, or should I say lack a little in the form of direction. This book is great for giving yourself the programme(s) to follow and a great step by step description of how to do the various exercises. I dont leave this one in my car to be stolen again as I dont want to loose it a second time.... 5 stars (From a parent and age group coach) - Eleven of my age group soccer kids completed the 30 workouts in this book in ten weeks. After seeing the improvement in acceleration and speed, the other 8 team members and their parents are sorry they didn't join in. The 30 workouts alone are worth the price of the book. You don't need a sports science background. If you are looking for a "just do-it" approach that improves speed in short sprints, this book is for you. The book cuts to the chase. There is no need to dig out anything. Everything that is included is important and the program works. 4 stars (Univ Prof., Track Coach, Author, Former NFL Speed Consultant) - March 3, 2004 Reviewer: George R. Colfer, PhD. After reading two mixed reviews from 2002 and 2004, I decided to read and review this book. Considering who the book was written for (i.e., young athletes), I would recommend it as a Resource and Guide for Speed Improvement. No book is ever perfect for all audiences regardless of size, length or type. When I see a title for "young athletes," I usually hold my breath as most imitate what works only for highly skilled athletes. The first thing I liked about the book was the introduction including "How to use the book" (pg. 11) and Chapter 1, which offers assessment to determine readiness for certain components of the workouts. Another example was regarding Plyometrics (pg. 90) where the author states a leg strength requirement and who by age level should avoid plyometrics, although I would rather see this at the beginning of the section as many youngsters "do" and don't read. Dr. Dintiman is very knowledgeable and also proven in the area of speed and running improvement. He has a much higher level book now in it's 3rd or 4th printing. Core Performance - The Revolutionary Workout Program to Transform Your Body and Your Life

5 stars (Core Benefits !) - what a difference this book has made in my basic body alignment. I am really taking the time to follow the simple plans of building my core and people see the results. And i am pleased with the results. 4 stars (Excellent workout, but understand the limitations) - As background, I'm a late thirties guy who has generally been active in fitness and recreational sports, but I've been out of competitive athletics since college. As such, I started with a good-but-not-great level of fitness. My reasons for starting included boredom with my routine of weightlifting and kickboxing on alternate days, as well as some reading about the merits of core conditioning as a training approach. I enjoyed this program from the beginning. I could detect improvements in flexibility and abdominal strength within a few workouts. Also, the variety was intellectually stimulating. I used the program for about 9 weeks, took a break from it, and returned. Now I am not quite as strict in sticking to the schedules lined out in the book, but rather work them in with other workouts as time and interest allow. Strengths: 1) The workouts are rigorous and concise. They seldom exceed 45 minutes if you stick to the rules about the amount of rest between sets, but you feel like you have had a good workout. 2) The program works. It helped with overall fitness and sport-specific fitness in soccer and karate. I literally have felt better and fitter than I have in years. 3) The complaint about the science of the book is being answered as research catches up with this training approach. Dynamic stretching, "core" exercises and interval training are showing up in research studies and in professional training rooms. I don't think a reader needs to feel that this is an "out there" approach to fitness. Weakness: 1) The typos should be embarrassing. 5 stars (Good and Practical) - I expect to hear many success stories of people following Jorge Cruise's "8 minutes in the morning" routine. It is really easy to follow as it takes neither a lot of time nor a lot of effort. I think it is a plan for anyone. I suggest anyone who is interested in health to consider purchasing this book. Suggested meals are also tasty. What I especially like about Jorge Cruise is that he does not suggest any diet that requires giving up some ingredients such as fats or carbohydrates. NO counting of calories or banning of foods - that fits me well! Similar like M. Tombak in his book "Can We Live 150 Year?" Jorge Cruise makes sure that you have a balanced diet. Dr. Tombak, however, focused more at one's health and longevity rather than good looks. But surprisingly, when you follow Tombak's advice good looks just come about as a natural outcome of good physical and psychological health. If you add to this your "8 minutes in the morning" plan, you are set for success... 3 stars (more to it than the title) - What the title and other reviews here don't tell you is that Jorge recommends you cleanse your system every Saturday with a laxative. Not the way I want to spend my weekend. 2 stars (YOU NEED MORE THAN 8 but good choices) - I Look for books all the time on this topic to see if there any new moves I can pick up to help shape and tone the stomach area which is a problem for most of us. The Art of Expressing the Human Body

5 stars (Unexpecting) - Some people may be skeptical about Bruce Lee as a martial artist, bodybuilder, fitness enthusiast, etc. But in reality one need not be a fan to understand the brilliance to his methods. The book always emphasizes that Bruce was all about changing things, looking and trying all aspects, then deciding what stays and what is unnecessary. Like chiseling away the pieces of stone to carve a statue. After having done extensive research into bodybuilding, fitness, martial arts, Asian Medicine, Eastern Philosophy, exercise physiology, and dietetics I can honestly say that this book is very advanced. What I mean by this is that one has to do his/her own research to decide about the methods outlined. Indeed some of the research is outdated. For example the couplings of incomplete proteins and complete is slightly flawed in logic. However, you must not forget these methods were employed way before large advances were made in the way of sports nutrition and supplementation. In the training aspect any normal human would indeed be overtrained. But the body is a magnificent creation and can adapt to anything that it encounters. Shaolin Monks, Ultra Runners, Olympic Gymnasts... they all do things that would overtrain any of us normal people. But they are not overtrained. Indeed Bruce had trained long and hard to become as resilient as such. As someone who has done a little Personal Training I have to say that his development when he started lifting weights showed his ability to adapt. His body became very muscular very quickly. However, for those who think steroids were his thing... they were not. Not only did he believe in the natural way he also believed that a bulky body will decrease flexibilty and overall speed and endurance. 3 stars (Good) - I like the different exercises on every other day- it worked out pretty well for me with my week days- but some of the info seems to be rehashed over and over again in his books.Some of the moves bothered my low back at times- morning vs the evening so I changed around the execersies it seem to work. Hope this helps. 3 stars (2nd best, but it DOES rank!) - I think Jorge Cruise has a lot to offer and I certainly love his technique, but I believe his first book "8 Minutes in the Morning: A Simple Way to Shed up to 2 Pounds a Week Guaranteed" was by far #1. Here's why: - 8 min. flat belly had a lot of repeat information from the original 8 minutes, which is to be expected because they both market to others, but if you have already read and followed the original 8 minutes book, I doubt you'll appreciate this one. - I FELT a lot thinner in all areas while doing the original 8 minutes routine than I ever did while doing the flat belly program. It reccommends mixing hip and thigh spot training with all over body moves, I just didn't feel a difference. - The original has a few paragraphs of motivation before every routine, lean hips doesn't. The motivation was a big factor for me. - The original has different routines every day for 4 weeks!! Lean hips has only 1 week of each level (easy, intermediate, hard). I know every body is different and perhaps if you begin with this book you would like it, but my overall opinion is that the original is #1!! 5 stars (8 Minutes in the Morning to Lean Hips and Thin Thighs) - This is THE exercise and eating plan book I've been needing all my life! The exercises are so easy and very little equipment is needed. Everyone can spare 8 minutes a day to do them. I feel great, have lost 11 lbs., and my pants are baggy in my thighs in just 4 weeks. The Russian Kettlebell Challenge

5 stars (Essential strength training material.) - After reading Pavel Tsatsouline's "The Naked Warrior," I took the plunge and purchased this book along with a basic 36-pound kettlebell. The exercises are more technically demanding than what you see being performed in fitness clubs, but the superior results of kettlebell training are impossible to deny: lean wiry muscles, increased endurance, and immense reserves of functional strength. Unlike the Nautilus scene, kettlebells are just plain fun to work out with, and like I said, they leave no doubt even after your first encounter with them that they are *the* ticket for the would-be ironman (or woman.) If you have a fitness club membership, burn it and use the proceeds to purchase this book and a kettlebell or two. It's a better deal. 5 stars (Fantastic Workout) - If you are tired of dieting and aerobics, want to take part in an intense workout, or if you just want to read more about this crazy workout and learn some basics this book is for you. This book provides a great introduction to Kettlebell Training. This book is broken into the following four very useful sections. Section One explains the History of the Russian Kettlebell. Section Two goes into Special Applications such as Combat Sports, Arm Wrestling, Weight Loss, etc. Section Three goes into actual Kettlebell Techniques. Section Four finishes the book off with some Classic Kettlebell Programs One of the most impressive parts of this book and the reason I believe it earns its 5 stars is because of not only its complete history but also its fantastic breakdown of the foundational exercises through photographs. Power to the People- - Russian Strength Training Secrets for Every American

5 stars (I'm amazed) - This stuff works! The guy says he will have us growing like weeds in no time, and he is RIGHT. I've made amazing gains in strength (and some in mass) by using principles found in this book. I'm a guy who has lifted weights for 15 years and had stagnated a long time ago. I thought I was a "hardgainer", and hardly had any results from my training after my first 2-3 years. This book finally changed that. A word of caution. The author recommends training very frequently, even several times at day (but never to failure). If you, like me, have been training every bodypart only once a week and you switch to Pavel-type training, I suggest you add volume GRADUALLY. Full of excitement I started benching 5 times a day immediately -- and I became severly overtrained and had to take a week off to recover. Ouch. (Now, Pavel doesn't recommend using the bench press. In fact, he only provides you with 2 (actually 3) excercises, but the principles he describes will work with ANY excercise. I have made HUGE gains in the bench and pull-ups using what I learned from this book.) A second word of caution. I found the book to be quite disorganized. It could definately use the work of a good editor. Yes, half the book is advertising, and the pages with usefull stuff contain so much repetition they could probably be reduced in half as well. I could have deducted a couple of stars because of these problems, but this book has GREAT information about how to get awesomly strong. And when it comes down to it that's all that matters. 5 stars (Loaded with information) - Loren Christensen and Wim Demeere have teamed up to bring you a book that is an excellent addition to the shelves of any martial artist, fit or fat. Why you ask? If you are fit there are plenty of maintenance and improvement (everyone can improve) ideas that you will find not only more efficient but almost certainly more enjoyable that will help you bring out your "A-game" consistently. If you are fat, you will get ideas and encouragement on not simply how to lose weight, but how to do it through your training or with ideas that complement your training. If you are somewhere in the middle, well ain't you special, you get the best of all worlds. Topics are numerous, probably too many for one person to apply concurrently, and some may not be appropriate for everyone. What is best though, in my opinion, is that all the topics can be a gateway to methods you may not have encountered. Even for familiar topics you will find new approaches, exercises, or drills geared toward the improvement of your martial arts. The authors have done extensive research and combined that with their own personal experience as well as their experience guiding students and clients. Why compartmentalize your fitness training from your martial training? Find out how to combine and/or complement both. For example, discussions on HIIT and Dirt Day are sufficient to guide and be put into practice, but have also prompted me to seek further information. 4 stars (simple, but effective) - I enjoyed this book because uses a very straight and simple language, but provides very accurate information, about nutrition and how the human body interacts with various sources of food. About the advises written on the book about weight gaining and weight dropping it, are overall correct and safe. It did. The book came and my first reaction was... this guy is nuts. I read most of the book thinking it would just get placed on the book shelf with all the other diet books I've collected over the years. My second reaction was... this is different than all those other books (including the manual) and all those other books aren't working so what do I have to lose but some flab? I'm on my second week following the plan in this book and I've lost around 8 pounds and I can see my arms are toning up. The ice water is good, the diet is do-able and I like doing my light cardio workout after dinner. I learned a lot of little secrets and I'm really convinced that I can last the initial six week plan and continue on after that with my Bowflex. If you are doing multiple sets of 12 or more reps with light weights with little results... you'd benefit by getting this book and changing the way you're doing things. 3 stars (Repeats the Bowflex Ultimate Manual) - I bought a used Bowflex and the seller didn't have the manual. I wanted to use the machine properly and ordered a manual from the company, but it was back-ordered so I bought this book. It's well written and the photographs are good, but once the manual arrived I saw the book was pretty much a repeat. If you want a hardback, then buy the book, otherwise buy the manual since it's much less expensive. ...
