Contemporary Sport Management

5 stars (Great book) - This book was required for my introduction to sport management classes. JB Parks and J. Quarterman did a fantastic job at putting this introductory book together. Whats even better is that my professor for this class was JB Parks herself, in her final year before retiring from Bowling Green State University. She is a wonderful professor and very smart in the field of sports management. I would suggest this book for any sports management major, professor, etc. 4 stars (Very Helpful) - This book was a required textbook in one of my sport management major classes - it's the only one so far that I've bothered to keep. The information is timely and easy to reference. ...

The Complete Sailor- Learning the Art of Sailing

5 stars (Clear and concise- and attractive) - The best introduction to sailing I've found. The illustrations- cartoons, really- are attractive, and clearly show exactly what you want to know without excessive detail or abstract diagrams. Along with instruction from a friend, this is the book that taught me how to sail my little Potter 15. Recommended for all beginning sailors, and those who are intersted in learning more about sailing. 5 stars (wonderful sailing book) - As I said, I own many sailing books, but this is my favorite. It teaches while still catching the essence, the soul of sailing. (so many sailing books of this type are so dry). 5 stars (Better than Sailing For Dummies for dummies like me.) - I wish I had gotten this before I bought Sailing For Dummies. Sailing For Dummies somehow left me with a lot of unanswered basic questions about sailing. Complete Sailor answered those questions. Complete Sailor also has more illustrations that provide a clearer understanding of just what the heck the author's talking about. ...

Speed Improvement for Young Athletes- How to Sprint Faster in Your Sport in 30 Workouts

5 stars (From a parent and age group coach) - Eleven of my age group soccer kids completed the 30 workouts in this book in ten weeks. After seeing the improvement in acceleration and speed, the other 8 team members and their parents are sorry they didn't join in. The 30 workouts alone are worth the price of the book. You don't need a sports science background. If you are looking for a "just do-it" approach that improves speed in short sprints, this book is for you. The book cuts to the chase. There is no need to dig out anything. Everything that is included is important and the program works. 4 stars (Univ Prof., Track Coach, Author, Former NFL Speed Consultant) - March 3, 2004 Reviewer: George R. Colfer, PhD. After reading two mixed reviews from 2002 and 2004, I decided to read and review this book. Considering who the book was written for (i.e., young athletes), I would recommend it as a Resource and Guide for Speed Improvement. No book is ever perfect for all audiences regardless of size, length or type. When I see a title for "young athletes," I usually hold my breath as most imitate what works only for highly skilled athletes. The first thing I liked about the book was the introduction including "How to use the book" (pg. 11) and Chapter 1, which offers assessment to determine readiness for certain components of the workouts. Another example was regarding Plyometrics (pg. 90) where the author states a leg strength requirement and who by age level should avoid plyometrics, although I would rather see this at the beginning of the section as many youngsters "do" and don't read. Dr. Dintiman is very knowledgeable and also proven in the area of speed and running improvement. He has a much higher level book now in it's 3rd or 4th printing. Speed Improvement for Young Athletes is readable and follows a "how to do it" approach without a lot of "hype." My experience with speed is that it first requires self-motivation. There is a lot of material and e...

The Ultimate Guide to Weight Training for Triathlon The Ultimate Guide to Weight Training for Sport

1 stars (This triathlete agrees) - The strength of triathlon strength training plans comes from authors who realize that weights augment other endurance training. Strength training must be seen as part of a larger endurance plan; this books just looks at weights and doesn't even do that very well. Other reviewers are correct in saying this book is pretty much a cut and paste job--it is. Also the quality of binding and pictures looks like something that I could have made in the 1980s with a copy machine (the pictures are blurry, the type-set is just plan ugly, and the binding is flimsy). Stay away from this book; it will not help you to develop a quality weight trianing program for triathlons. Instead look at for triathlon centered books by real triathlon coaches or triathletes. P.S. Notice that all of the positive reviews are from "a reader"? It makes me think that this is the publisher, rather than real triathletes who would rated this book so high. 2 stars (Not for this triathlete) - I have a personal training studio, have done several triathlons and sat on my bike for 6 hours or more. I bought the book thinking it would spark up my weight routine and give new ideas. I was disappointed to say the least. This author is not even a triathlete. He is a bodybuilder, yes we need high reps, but we need core strength, balance, and power. There was none of this in the book. 2 stars (Nothing but cut and pasted old school exercises ) - You might confuse this book for a '70s Joe Weider weight training manual. Apparently this company cranks out dozens of these "sport specific" books (lacross, hockey, etc) with no real knowledge into the actual sport. They must have a template doc which they do a search & replace from "hockey" to "triathlon". I can imagine a guy at a desk thinking - "hhmm, triathletes use their arms right?" and cut & pasting a couple of standard arm exercises in. Almost nothing about core, balance, or endurance. You'd be much better off with...

The Russian Kettlebell Challenge

5 stars (Essential strength training material.) - After reading Pavel Tsatsouline's "The Naked Warrior," I took the plunge and purchased this book along with a basic 36-pound kettlebell. The exercises are more technically demanding than what you see being performed in fitness clubs, but the superior results of kettlebell training are impossible to deny: lean wiry muscles, increased endurance, and immense reserves of functional strength. Unlike the Nautilus scene, kettlebells are just plain fun to work out with, and like I said, they leave no doubt even after your first encounter with them that they are *the* ticket for the would-be ironman (or woman.) If you have a fitness club membership, burn it and use the proceeds to purchase this book and a kettlebell or two. It's a better deal. 5 stars (Fantastic Workout) - If you are tired of dieting and aerobics, want to take part in an intense workout, or if you just want to read more about this crazy workout and learn some basics this book is for you. This book provides a great introduction to Kettlebell Training. This book is broken into the following four very useful sections. Section One explains the History of the Russian Kettlebell. Section Two goes into Special Applications such as Combat Sports, Arm Wrestling, Weight Loss, etc. Section Three goes into actual Kettlebell Techniques. Section Four finishes the book off with some Classic Kettlebell Programs One of the most impressive parts of this book and the reason I believe it earns its 5 stars is because of not only its complete history but also its fantastic breakdown of the foundational exercises through photographs. This is a great starting point if you are interested in Kettlebells. However, if you plan on continuing with kettlebell training I would recommend that you get a quality 16kg kettlebell & purchase Pavel's DVD also named " The Russian Kettlebell Challenge " 5 stars (Join the kettlebell revolution!) - You have to try kettlebells to beli...

The Essential Wilderness Navigator- How to Find Your Way in the Great Outdoors- Second Edition

4 stars (Difficult to get lost with this one...) - An excellent book for those starting out on orienteering. Very good conversational wording. Doesn't use too much jargon. The practical exercises are easily understood. The combination of the written word and neat diagrams and pictures make the information easily digestable. 5 stars (Excellent Map and Compass Instruction Book) - The best map and compass handbook I've come across. Excellent photos and illustrations add to simple and straightforward written material to make a great book for use when practicing real-life outdoor navigation. 4 stars (The best resource for beginning or experienced pathfinders) - This book is the best resource on land navigation i've seen. I use it regularly in teaching land navigation in conjunction with search and rescue to area fire departments. The author makes the hard-to-explain easy to understand for beginners and experts alike. ...

Power to the People- - Russian Strength Training Secrets for Every American

5 stars (I'm amazed) - This stuff works! The guy says he will have us growing like weeds in no time, and he is RIGHT. I've made amazing gains in strength (and some in mass) by using principles found in this book. I'm a guy who has lifted weights for 15 years and had stagnated a long time ago. I thought I was a "hardgainer", and hardly had any results from my training after my first 2-3 years. This book finally changed that. A word of caution. The author recommends training very frequently, even several times at day (but never to failure). If you, like me, have been training every bodypart only once a week and you switch to Pavel-type training, I suggest you add volume GRADUALLY. Full of excitement I started benching 5 times a day immediately -- and I became severly overtrained and had to take a week off to recover. Ouch. (Now, Pavel doesn't recommend using the bench press. In fact, he only provides you with 2 (actually 3) excercises, but the principles he describes will work with ANY excercise. I have made HUGE gains in the bench and pull-ups using what I learned from this book.) A second word of caution. I found the book to be quite disorganized. It could definately use the work of a good editor. Yes, half the book is advertising, and the pages with usefull stuff contain so much repetition they could probably be reduced in half as well. I could have deducted a couple of stars because of these problems, but this book has GREAT information about how to get awesomly strong. And when it comes down to it that's all that matters. This is the book I wish I had read 15 years ago. Do yourself a favour and buy it. 3 stars (Lots of Hype. Good Program, though) - Pavel has some good stuff in this book. The book revolves around a simple, high tension, low volume, high frequency program involving two exercises and their variations. It's good, but it can be pretty much descibed in one page and detailed in five. What we get is a book chock full of marketing hype with a be...

Clinical Sports Medicine-Revised 2nd Edition

5 stars (An invaluable resource) - The second edition (2001) of this work is indeed an outstanding resource. My daily work includes imaging of sports and musculoskeletal injuries. I find this book frequently useful to supplement deficiencies in my knowledge and experience, and a most useful companion to the second edition (2001) of "Musculoskeletal Ultrasound" by Marnix van Holsbeeck and Joseph Introcaso. Highly recommended as a workbench resource to those interested in imaging of sports injuries. 5 stars (Great book for physical therapists - incredible value) - This is an astounding book. When was the last time you saw a 900+ page hard cover book packed with useful photographs and excellent line drawings...The practical advice in this book is unparalleled. No wonder it is an international best-seller. It arrived quickly and well packed from Amazon. Keep up the good work and thanks! 5 stars (Best Sports Medicine Book I've Ever Used!) - The Second edition of Clinical Sports Medicine is the best reference book I have come across as an athletic therapist and professional fitness and lifestyle consultant. I find it very easy to navigate with great illustrations and information. The references are all very recent and evidence-based so you feel confident in following the authors' recommendations. It is particularly good value at 67 US dollars - most hardcover books of this size are about twice that price. The corresponding website has updated information, including relevant published papers, which I find quite helpful also. These authors have really done a fabulous job of classifying sports medicine information in a logical and easy-to-use format. I highly recommend it to anyone in the sports, fitness, and/or health fields! ...

Mac OS X 10 4 Tiger DVD

5 stars (Sleek Tiger) - The finest OS to date. I was haapy with Paanthere, but Tiger is a steop above. 5 stars (From PC to Mac forever, this OS is amazing.) - I have used Windows for years and used a Mac at my work, I always liked the way the Mac handled graphics and also appreciated their ease of use. Mac OS X is so simple to use compared to Windows XP, it is by far the best OS I have ever used. I have not run into one single glitch, my powerbook has not crashed on me once. It had crashed on me a few times with OS 9, but this one seems to be a lot more stable. I like the dashboard also, you can quickly check the weather, stocks, dictionary or calendar all with a push of a button and built into the OS. You can also download many others for free from the Apple website. Itunes is a great application also and it is something I use all day long. Safari is far more superior in just about every-way compared to Microsoft Explorer, in fact it would take to long to list the benefits. I also liked the ability to run OS 9 in classic mode, so you can keep all your older software and still use them within OS X. If you are sick and tired of the Windows fatal exception errors or sending Windows error reports, then buy yourself an Apple and enjoy stress free living with OS X. 1 stars (Stick with Panther) - I get the spinning beachball and Microsoft Office application crashes about as often as I did in 10.1! I reformatted my hard disk and reinstalled Panther after trying the 10.4.1 and 10.4.2 updates. For my needs Panther (10.3.8+) is a much more robust and stable operating system. ...

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade with Service Pack 2

1 stars (stupid and ridiculous) - why? cause it chokes up PROCESSING and RAM that's why! its full of bugs and freezes frequently. [...] if you want stability get win2000. its ridiculous how they keep releasing new operating systems every year. XP = Xtra Problem. 5 stars (WindowsXPHomeSP2) - I had WindowsME, but something went wrong with my computer and it wasn't recognizing drivers for stuff so I got XP and that fixed all that because XP has all the drivers you need already included in it. 4 stars (No Surprises) - Upgraded from Win 98 on laptop with no problems except for conflict with wireless module. ...
