Type Talk at Work Revised - How the 16 Personality Types Determine Your Success on the Job

4 stars (Can't we all just get along!) - This book with mainly two things in mind: communication and understanding. The author's adopt their longstanding research about the world of typewatching into an intelligible book about the main areas of the work environment such as problem solving, conflict resolution, time management, etc. Any manager that has direct reports would do themselves a favor by reading this book. This book will also provide support for a subordinate that doesn't quite "fit in." For those hurried types, each chapter ends with guidlines in a charted format for working with those of other preferences. Although this is somewhat useful, what I don't like about the approach is that they focus on the four preferences instead of focusing on the four major groupings, forcing the reader to combine and study the effects. For example, the charts will explain how an E should lead an I, etc. I believe that it would be much more useful to categorize the charts by the four major groups (e.g. NF's, NT's, SJ's, SP's) and how to interact with other types in each subject area. To the author's credit, the book does provide an overview on the major strengths and potential weaknesses of each of the 16 types in the workplace, for those who aren't familiar with the MBTI. However, it does not really provide a concrete method of determining type, leaving the reader somewhat guessing with the use of anecdotal phrases. Overall, I find this book well worth the investment. However, I would not recommend this book as an introduction to typewatching. If you are familiar with type, the specific chapters will be meaningful, if not, pick up either the precursor to this book by the same author's or one of David Keirsey's works prior to reading this. 4 stars (Better tool for self understanding than controlling others) - Kroeger and Thuesen are not my favorite MBTI authors, but the Type Talk books are a decent reference for those who consider themselves beginner and intermediate le...

The Likeability Factor - How to Boost Your L-Factor and Achieve Your Life-s Dreams

5 stars (An absolut MUST-READ!) - The LikeAbility philosophy, as Tim cleary explains, is much needed in our world. Tim's research is thorough and has depth. The concept is simple to grasp, yet challenging to implement in our daily lives. His practical advice and exercises are very valuable and easy to follow. Congratulations to an inspiring and excellent book, Tim. 4 stars (A Great Message ) - This kind of message may seem obvious but it is amazing how important it is to be likeable! It's not always easy and I do think it takes practise, especially in business. Often we are so busy to get all the work done that we can forget to take time to really be nice - especially when situations are chaotic. Tim is on the right track and I look forward to his next book. 3 stars (Somewhat Interesting) - Sanders' book is short, and interesting - up to a point. He briefly cites evidence that being likeable (having an interest in others, listening to them, etc.) is linked to good health, improved job retention, overall success, better quality time with a physician, greater liklihood of getting elected, and significantly reduced chance of divorce. Also, "nice" physicians are less likely to be sued, and more likely to win if they are. All useful points. But what about Leo Durocher's "Nice guys finish last" philosophy? I guess that's another book. ...

Delivered from Distraction - Getting the Most out of Life with Attention Deficit Disorder

5 stars (WOW!!) - I am a 41 year old woman.. stay home Mom with four kids. I have been incredibly disorganized and frustrated for many years and was recently diagnosed with Adult ADD. I decided to do some research to learn more about natural cures and basic understanding of this condition.. and this book has been awesome!! I have already changed things in my life.. from the ideas in the book.. I would say this is a MUST READ for anyone diagnosed with ADD or with a child with ADD... AWESOME BOOK!! 5 stars (Delivered From Distraction) - This book is so helpful and right on target with advice and solutions. The additional concepts and information it provides for people with ADD is just great. 5 stars (Practical tips in a highly readable narrative!) - Just finished reading this excellent followup book to Driven to Distraction. Dr. Hallowell has included his best suggestions from over 20 years of practice as well as his personal experiences with ADD. Unlike many of the ADD titles, this book is written with adults in mind, but it will also be helpful to parents of ADD children. Many of the chapters are extremely short. Dr. Hallowell emphasizes that you don't even have to read the whole book (but I couldn't put it down). You can start at the beginning or pick out any chapter that seems relevant to you - this strategy is perfect for adults with ADD and for the busy people who love them. This good-humored book discusses the current spectrum of medications and training techniques with an emphasis on day-to-day coping by building upon the many positive traits of those with ADD. ...

I Hate You- Don-t Leave Me - Understanding the Borderline Personality

4 stars (One of the best books out there on Borderline Personality Disorder) - I purchased this book for a friend. She wanted to give it to her Doctor. She was so impressed with this book she wanted everyone to read it. It is very well thought out and easy to understand for the lay person. A must read if have Borderline Personality Disorder or just know someone that does. 1 stars (please read this review) - If you are truelly a borderline personality who is seeking information before treatment or you are new to treatment do not read this book.It is a very outdated view which is insensitive to the needs of BPDers and their families at a time when hope and faith is needed.I read this post intensive treatment and as a now diagnosed BPD meaning treated and considered successfully treated this book negates it.One star for pointing out fellow famous BPDers. But read this when you can look back... Stick to Marsha Linehan and" Lost in the Mirror" 4 stars (Things Become Clearer) - This book defines a condition that has baffled us - BPD. Suspicions are confirmed, and perhaps courses of action are opened to us that we didn't have before. We recommend this book if someone close to you is frightening you with their behavior. It can enable you to take action, or at least better understand what's going on. ...

Handbook of Psychological Assessment

1 stars (Not what I was looking for) - I am a Ph.D candidate, and I was looking for some help in one my Psychological Assessment classes. I did not find any help in this book. This book is written for the layperson, and may be a source of basic information on current psychological tests. However, for the professional looking for additional information it is disappointing. 5 stars (the gold standard) - This text has quickly become the gold standard for both students and practitioners of psychological assessment. It is unique in that it is extremely practical and applicable to day to day practice, yet it is thoroughly grounded in research--which is succinctly cited throughout the text. And, somehow, each volume gets better. This is not a book that will collect dust on a shelf--clinicians will find sage guidance in this text. 5 stars (Excellent resource for practicing clinincians and students) - Having read/reviewed numerous 'handbooks,' this is probably the best of the breed. Groth-Marnat has done an excellent job of covering the main assessment techniques used by clinicians to psychologically evaluate patients. Clinicians will find this handbook indispensable, and, in fact, (I predict) will keep it parked on their desk for ready access. Students will find the book thorough, informative and practical. If you are serious about psychological assessment, this one is a 'must-have.' You won't be disappointed. ...

Please Understand Me- Character and Temperament Types

5 stars (Outstanding tool for managing and leading) - An easy to read and understand explanation of why some things appeal to us and others don't. This is a must read for anyone that supervises or leads people. Robert Ruiz 5 stars (The Bible of Typology) - Offering a comprehensive analysis of how our temperaments affect our style of leadership, romance, childhood behavior, and overall character, "Please Understand Me" is an invaluable tool of reference that will forever change the way you view interpersonal relationships. There were moments in the book when I could not help but think to myself, "If I had just known this earlier, it would have saved me so much trouble." The universal applicability of what Keirsey & Bates discuss make this a relevant read for all of mankind, however, only the enlightened minority that actually cares to discover why human beings behave the way that they do will appreciate the content. Exceptionally practical and insightful, this is a work that you can refer back to again and again throughout the years to better decipher the actions of those around you. Highly recommended. 5 stars (How to Understand Yourself and Those Around You) - +++++ This easy-to-read book, by clinical psychologists David Keirsey and Marilyn Bates, is about character and temperament types. Character is the integration of all traits to yield a unified whole which reveals the nature or personality of a person. Temperament is an aspect of a person's general make-up characterized by dispositions toward particular patterns of behavior (for example, emotional reactions and mood shifts). The authors explain the purpose of their book: "The point of this book is that people are different from each other, and that no amount of getting after them is going to change them. Nor is there any reason to change them, because the differences are probably good, not bad." The book begins by making the reader aware that there are four pairs of "dimensions of difference": (1...

Skills Training Manual for Treating Borderline Personality Disorder

5 stars (this is partner to successful treatment) - If you have been diagnosed a BPD this is your companion to adequate treatment.Keep in mind this book is not to be used alone. Once a DBT specialist is in your life this book becomes 50% treatment. The cornerstone to functioning and the reference you can forever use when treated for BPD it is my belief and Dr. Linehan's that you can live a normal life. Discard I hate u don't leave me and seek out this treatment. Then this book will someday be reviewed by u. 5 stars (Finding What Works) - Knowing how to access a place inside to relieve symptoms of long standing illness is pure genius, and this book is the road map to spiritual identification and release of problems, just by learning how to relax and let the spirit do it's job. I love it. 4 stars (Wouldn't it be nice.....) - That's the beginning of an old Beach Boys' song and maybe a good response to the fine research and development of what is called "dialectical behavioral therapy." It's a fine paradigm and tacitly acknowledges that effective therapy is not a one hour a week process, but an on-going one with multi-modal tasks and treatments, and ideally with a therapy team. This book is a great handbook, but NASA publishes excellent handbooks on operating space vehicles: but it doesn't do much good if you can't afford a launchpad (more on this metaphor in a moment). The book clearly lays out the task of the therapist and client. The client should do homework assignments, self-monitoring, reflection, etc. That is all fine and good if one has a research grant and a "captive audience" so to speak, but in the real world, how many people could adhere to such a regimen. As insurance company allowances for mental health severely limit length of treatment and quality of treatment, and with the average American's work week having expanded ten hours per week since the early 1980's (see "The Future of Success"-Robert Reich), who are the clients that will truly benefit from ...

The Wizard of Oz and Other Narcissists- Coping with the One-Way Relationship in Work- Love- and Fami

5 stars (Light in the Darkness) - This overview of the dynamics between a "Narcissist" and a "Co" is validating to the confused "Co" who is invalidated and used only to be made wrong when he/she speaks up. The decriptions of the parts each one plays in the inevitable destruction is laid out in clear and concise tables. The fine-tuning of the difference between an "Overt" and a "Covert" Narc. is extremely helpful. Looking at 2 sides of the same "animal" makes it easier to respond and move into growth and health. I am greatly helped in my very long process of learning to love myself as I love my "Narcissists" in a way that is truely loving--to both and all in our lives. I have helped to create and maintain the monster. I have a sense of self that I must grow into too or I am a dependant who "uses" another to define and shape my life! This book hits the "spot! 5 stars (Gripping) - A powerfully realistic perspective of the many tragedies that result from narcisssim. This is a straight forward read that uses a variety of narritives to explain the spell binding nature of this syndrome. The authors objective informative approach to this subject makes this a must read for anyone who has been affected by this subject. 5 stars (Mirror Be Gone) - I read "The Wizard of Oz and Other Narcissists" after recognizing way too much of myself in the book "My Fractured Life". While it's a brilliant book, I'm not sure I would want people to see me like that and I'm afraid that they do - because I have been guilty of that because of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. "The Wizard of Oz and Other Narcissists" puts a lot in perspective for me and is helping me realize and hopefully change a lot. I'd rather enjoy "My Fractured Life" as an entertained reader than as an active participant looking in the mirror. ...

Psychoanalytic Diagnosis- Understanding Personality Structure in the Clinical Process

5 stars (The Best Psychoanalytic Psychopathology Textbook) - This book has really caught on with psychoanalytic teachers because students (beginners especially) are uniformly enthusiastic. This book is readable and comprehensive and every page has a clinically useful insight those beginners or advance practioners can use. What also makes this book so appealing is that it is organized pretty much in line with (Axis II of) the DSM 4 but explains personality types (paranoid, narcissistic, histrionic etc) in classical psychoanalytic terms. Since psychiatry has been taken over by the biologists and since psychology has been taken over by the cognitive-behaviorists, psychoanalysts are lucky to have this presentation of their views. This book summarizes 100 plus year of accumulated psychoanalytic knowledge. Indeed McWilliams does for the turn of the twentieth century what Otto Fenichal did in the mid-l940's -- she has turned out a book that pretty much details the "state of the (psychoanalytic) art" at this point in history. Students will be very taken by McWilliams conversational (but savvy) style. Also the book has a feminist slant and takes what might be called politically correct positions on various aspects of psychopathology in women and this also may play a role in the books appeal to younger students who are suspicious that psychoanalysis is subtly (or not subtly) part of the patriarchal effort to suppress women. For any one who wants to learn about psychoanalysis this is one of about five basic books to start an analytic library. The basic organization of the book is consistent with the more technical, complex work of Otto Kernberg (which McWilliams's summarizes in a far simpler-than-original fashion) and also with the (sadly forgotten) work of Gertrude and Rubin Blanck. Also those who are familiar with Emmanuel Hammer's brilliant clinical insights into masochism will very much appreciate McWilliams giving Hammer's views a wider currency. 5 stars (not only for ...

Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder

4 stars (Effective for higher functioning, motivated borderlines) - I work in a residential treatment facility for SPMI (all clients also have at least one Axis I diagnosis), and most of our clients have too low of intellectual functioning to grasp many of the DBT concepts. As an intellectual and a practicising Buddhist, I enjoy Linehan's text (especially the focus on Zen aspects: primarily mindfulness). I have encountered many therapists who have succesfully utilized DBT with other client populations. Dr. Linehan has poured years of experience and research into this text. For my clients, I have to significantly alter and simplify many of the tennants of this treatment. If you are reading this, you know that Borderlines are a growing (and very timeconsuming) population of consumers and this text should be in the library of all mental health workers. 5 stars (Fascinating!) - I found this book to be so fascinating and eye opening. Although this book is written for those who TREAT borderline personality disorder, I think it will be very helpful to those who have the disorder. I know it has been a great learning tool for me, and I suffer from BPD. Marsha Linehan shows an amazingly compassionate understanding towards the mind of a person with this disorder. I found myself astonished at her incredible ability to understand the way I think. I think the author is nothing short of a genius. The book is great...but it is complicated and it is not a good book for those who don't enjoy intensely intellectual reading. If you are looking for a book to give you quick facts, this is not the book for you. You must enjoy reading to get into this book. 1 stars (A Total Waste of Paper) - At first I thought the author, Marsha Linehan, was a mental patient herself or perhaps foreign-born because this book is so badly written. It's full of new age cliches, tossed in with Eastern mysticism and the author's own ramblings. The author repeats the same words and phrases over and over again,...

Mac OS X 10 4 Tiger DVD

5 stars (Sleek Tiger) - The finest OS to date. I was haapy with Paanthere, but Tiger is a steop above. 5 stars (From PC to Mac forever, this OS is amazing.) - I have used Windows for years and used a Mac at my work, I always liked the way the Mac handled graphics and also appreciated their ease of use. Mac OS X is so simple to use compared to Windows XP, it is by far the best OS I have ever used. I have not run into one single glitch, my powerbook has not crashed on me once. It had crashed on me a few times with OS 9, but this one seems to be a lot more stable. I like the dashboard also, you can quickly check the weather, stocks, dictionary or calendar all with a push of a button and built into the OS. You can also download many others for free from the Apple website. Itunes is a great application also and it is something I use all day long. Safari is far more superior in just about every-way compared to Microsoft Explorer, in fact it would take to long to list the benefits. I also liked the ability to run OS 9 in classic mode, so you can keep all your older software and still use them within OS X. If you are sick and tired of the Windows fatal exception errors or sending Windows error reports, then buy yourself an Apple and enjoy stress free living with OS X. 1 stars (Stick with Panther) - I get the spinning beachball and Microsoft Office application crashes about as often as I did in 10.1! I reformatted my hard disk and reinstalled Panther after trying the 10.4.1 and 10.4.2 updates. For my needs Panther (10.3.8+) is a much more robust and stable operating system. ...
