Last Place on Earth

5 stars (This book is a timeless keepsake) - I highly recommend this book. The pictures are beautiful and some are disturbing. It truely tells the amazing story of Africa. 5 stars (An Extraordinary Treasure) - This "boxed set", consisting of a large case containing two extraordinary books, is one of the most satisfying purchases I have ever made. In case you don't know, here is the background on the " Last Place on Earth ": Mike Fay is a scientist with the Wildlife Conservation Society who, outraged at destruction Congo Basin forests, decided to walk across the heart of Africa in order to document the undisturbed wild before it was lost. Over a year later, after innumerable hardships, wonders and adventures, Fay finally emerged from the forest to the waters of the Atlantic, ready to report back to the world what he had learned. Fay's stories and Nichols' photographs of this "megatransect" were so affecting that Gabon's president, in an unprecedented boon to world conservation, decided that his country's forests had value beyond their timber and designated vast tracts of Gabon as new national parks. The first and much larger of the two books in this set, contains at least 100 full-color, full-page photographs of the landscapes, animals and peoples of the African forests. The photographs are amazing: gritty and beautiful. They are the closest thing to being there. The second book contains black and white photos of Fay and his troop as they make their way across the Congo, and text by Fay himself. We learn how Fay came to be infatuated with saving the wilds as a teenager at a Maine summer camp, and how he came up with the idea of the megatransect, how he endured it, and how he was able to use such a "stunt" to create enormous changes in Gabon. In the end, Fay seems to be the environmental version of Gandhi: gaunt, with a line in his eyes, an unbreakable will, and a singular focus on protecting what is most precious to him: wild nature. If the nearly, $1...

Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs - Official Companion Book to the Exhibition sponsored

5 stars (Amazing book) - This book is an exquisitely done companion book to the exhibit. Every piece from the exhibit is highlighted in the book, with an appropriate discription and background. If you enjoy Ancient Egypt, get this book, whether you have the chance to see the exhibit or not. It's a great companion to the exhibit if you can see it, but a great substitute if you can't. 5 stars (Beautiful Photographs from the National Geographic.) - This magnificant book is the companion book to go with the Tutankhamun exhibition that is currently touring the United States. It features the magnificant photography for which National Geographic is famous complete with a narative written by Zahi Hawass, the secretary general of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities and director of the Giza and Saqqara Pyramids. In the descriptions, he talks about the life of the boy king, the state of Egypt at the time, the religion and much more. Each piece of the exhibit is discussed as to what it is, what significance it has, and where it was found. Perhaps most striking is the reconstructed image of Tutankhamun. It was made by a special CT scanner that obtained images from inside the mummy's wrappings without damaging them. This created the first three-dimensional picture of Tutankhamun. The exhibit will show in LA, June 16 to November 15, 2005, Ft. Lauderdale from December 15 to April 23, 2006, Chicago May 26 to January 1, 2007, and in Philadelphia February 3 to September 30, 2007. 5 stars (King Tut World Tour -- Part II) - Over the next two years, the artifacts found in the Egyptian tomb of King Tutankhamun will be on display at the musuems in Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, Chicago and Phildelphia. This expensive coffee-table book is the "Offical Companion" to the exhibition. Every other page is an illustration, a photograph of an artifact or a map which is accompany by a descriptive text on the opposing page. Beautifully laid out, the first section of the book is the hi...

National Geographic Atlas of the World- Eighth Edition

5 stars (National Geographic has made changes) - In December 2004, National Geographic (NG) updated the Persian Gulf plate (Plate 75) to accomodate the controversies surrounding the place-names used in the 8th edition. Here is my understanding of the changes made: 1. The term "Arabian Gulf" in parenthesis has been deleted. Instead, there is a small note that reads: "Historically and commonly known as the Persian Gulf, this body of water is also referred by some as the Arabian Gulf." 2. Persian names of all Iranian islands are used. (Kish instead of Qeys, Lavan alone instead of adding Sheykh Sha'eyb in parenthesis) 3. Deletion of "Occupied by Iran (Claimed by U.A.E.)" in reference to the islands Abu Musa, and Greater and Lesser Tunbs. These changes already appear on the website (www.nationalgeographic.com/mapmachine) and will apply to further printings or editions of the NG Atlas. Also, on the password-protected website for NG Atlas owners, there is a "brief summary of the historical origin of the term Persian Gulf". There is also a note on the place-naming policy of NG. (The online update feature is great - you can download and/or print updated plates and put them in your atlas. This not new for NG Atlases, except that they used to send updates by mail.) Overall, I am impressed with NG's response to this situation. I am also very impressed with the quality of the atlas and its contents, except for the outermost/superficial binding paper. I have had the atlas for about 6 months, and with moderate use, the paper around the bottom of the spine has frayed. The binding itself is intact, though. 1 stars (Foolishly...!!!) - The persian gulf is persian gulf for ever and never changed. 1 stars (Foolishly...!!!) - The persian gulf is persian gulf for ever and never changed. ...

National Geographic Maps- The Complete Collection

1 stars (What a disappointing experience!) - These are some of the most wonderful maps in the world, especially from a historical geography perspective. But of what use are they in this format? It is difficult to search, impossible to browse effectively, and there is no way for an educator to present these images in any sort of useful format. I would suggest buying this collection only if you have hours of free time with nothing better to do than switch back and forth between 8 CDs for mild (but frustrating) entertainment with a nice glass of wine. 1 stars (Difficult to use) - I purchased this product thinking that I would be able to sail around the world like a National Geographic adventurer. Unfortunately, I have been unable to use it at all. It appears that you need to place each disk into your computer as prompted to view the contents. I want to be able to stick the disks in once and have my computer bring up the information when requested. Maybe I didn't give it a good try, but I have not been able to see any maps at all. 4 stars (NG Maps and XP) - I have had this collection since 2002 and never had a problem until today: I was aghast when I inserted the install CD into my spanking new XP setup, only to be informed by the dreaded popup that 'National Geographic Maps Will Only Run Under Windows 95'! Then a furious search turned up the following on the NG website: "XP has the Program Compatibility Wizard which can help XP run programs developed under previous versions of Windows. To activate this feature: Click on the Start button. Go to All Programs then Accessories. Select the Program Compatibility Wizard. Select for it to look into the CD drive. Choose for it to run in Windows 98/ME mode. Another alternative would be to make a dual-boot partition." The first solution worked instantly for me, even without setting it to a lower screen resolution when given the option. I love this collection. Yes, the maps are scanned. Yes, the disk swapping is extr...
