Tender Warrior - God-s Intention For A Man

5 stars (Oustanding! ) - This book should be mandatory reading to every Christian male. It should be given to every young man so that he starts off his walk right. One of the best books I've ever read. Ever since I first read this book, I've given and continue to give copies to every one who I think might read it. If you can, also try to order his other books. I especially like Spirit Warriors. Do yourself, your family, and your community a favor and order Stu Weber's books. 5 stars (Excellent book on being a Christian father and husband) - This is an excellent and inspiring book for all men who want to be what God has called them to be. I think most men know that we're not living up to all that we could or should be, but so many of us don't know what to do about it. We're not being "real men." Now, for those of you who may be thinking "Oh no, not another 'get naked and beat tribal drums' book," Weber discusses several of the "drum beating" types of books, fairly discussing their positive points but concluding that they fall way short of where they need to in their search for authentic manhood. To find what men are made to be, you have to go back to the Author himself: past one man's personal insights into himself, past ancient tribal customs, past the "old stories": to the original Author Himself. This is a very Biblically-based book, and Weber makes no apologies for that. Weber divides manhood into four divisions, which he calls King, Warrior, Mentor, and Friend. This general theme is discussed in some other books on manhood (as Weber admits) but not as Biblically as Weber does it. For example, another book calls them "blueprints" of a man: Weber says he prefers to think of them as "fingerprints" of the man's Creator. But Weber doesn't hang his entire book on these four (rather arbitrary) divisions. Weber then finds a common thread throughout all of them: Initiative. The Ragamuffin Gospel

5 stars (I'm thankful God loves Ragamuffins.) - This is a thought-provoking book, worth reading slowly. The message is pretty simple -- but not easy to internalize. I used the book as a daily spiritual meditation for a time. Then some friends and I reread it and met together weekly to discuss it. There is much in common with Phil Yancey's "What's So Amazing About Grace?" It mixes stories from the author's experience with spiritual insight about God acting in human affairs. The main point is that Christians need to honestly consider God's love and grace and appreciate it for what it is. It is human nature to resist God's grace, to try and prove oneself really "good" and "spiritual", but this is foolishness. Instead, ragamuffins focus on God's grace and enjoy God. If this were EASY to do, you could stop with this review. You wouldn't need Yancey or Manning to explain it again and again. But I find I really need people like Brennan Manning to lay it out for me.... The book has caused some controversy. Both Protestants and Catholics have claimed that it argues for "casual grace" or even that Manning is a universalist. Those charges are false (Manning deals with them in an appendix) but not everyone will agree with Manning's message. The author, a former Catholic priest, an alcoholic, divorced -- has painfully proven himself a ragamuffin and God is still in love with him, so maybe God can work in you and me? Enjoy the book. 5 stars (Enjoyable Read) - There is just something that stays with you when you read a book by Brennan Manning. Before digesting the Ragamuffin Gospel, I had never heard of the author. After reading the book, I was challenged to remove God from the box I had put him in, and I was drawn to explore more of Manning's writings. The Ragamuffin Gospel isn't just another book that will fill you full of God's expectations, and cram your "to do for God" list full of activities. For Women Only - What You Need to Know About the Inner Lives of Men

5 stars (An Answer to Our Prayer of S.O.S.) - My soon-to-be-husband and I try to live as closely to His will and word as we can, but even so, disagreements had been tearing us apart recently. Even as we approach the doorstep of marriage, we'd begun to have doubts because of the frequent misunderstandings. He heard a radio spot on a Christian station talking about the book and, in a desperate attempt to mend our relationship, he mentioned it to me. I was just as frustrated as he was, so I bought it the next day. I read the whole book in about 3 hours. It was an easy read and, for someone so anxious to make things better, I couldn't put it down. He was at work when I read it in its entirity, but last night was eye-opening and awe-inspiring. Ladies, I highly recommend making a list of questions to ask your significant other/husband while reading. So many things occurred to me, even things like, "Do you really see it this way?" or, "Is this really how you feel when I say/do ____?" We assume that men are all simpletons, and they play the role rather convincingly sometimes, but this book gives great insight. Because of simple changes in wording, I was able to understand quite a few things about him that I thought I knew (but didn't get) before. The conversation we had based on the questions I wrote ironed out SO many things that had been plaguing us for several MONTHS; we haven't been this happy since the few spark-filled days after we first met. Finally, I must add something I found very helpful from this book. For longer than I've known my husband-to-be, I've struggled with depression. He's often encouraged me (in a concerned way, not a degrading one) to do things like lose weight or be active or have a more active social/spiritual life. I took these things to be insults, which only deepened my hole of worthlessness and low self-esteem. Love Must Be Tough - New Hope for Families in Crisis

5 stars (Excellent book, but you must have the fortitude to follow!) - Dr. Dobson is 100% correct in his methods. It IS guidance by the Lord. Showing TOUGH LOVE is the only way to help someone you love. Be it your spouse, a child or a relative. The methods in this book are not tricks. They delve into the psychology of what happens when someone feels "caged" in a relationship. It's based on the well known fact "the harder you try and hold on to someone, the harder they fight to get away." And this book is not just for Marriage issues. Dr. Dobson lists 16 things you need to know when you enter into a relationship that can keep you from blowing it. Had I known then what I know now, I would be upset at myself. I blew 14 of the 16 things and it's no wonder she ran away calling me "clingy" and "soft." I was and Dr. Dobson showed me exactly why. This book is NO GUARANTEE that you will win your spouse or significant other back. But, like anything else, if you don't do something you will more assuredly lose them anyway. Pray hard and read this book if you want to keep them. Learn to give them space. While I may have blown my chances with my ex (and I think I have) at least I am sure I will never repeat the same mistakes again. Single or Married, you need this book! 1 stars (Awful, Awful, Awful) - If your husband or wife just left and you are in the middle of the confusion and despair of that situation DO NOT follow the suggestions in this book! Trust me, go to the Lord in prayer, seeking only Him for your answers, He is absolutely faithful. Don't talk to your neighbors, friends, relatives, counselors or anyone until you talk to Jesus. He is your only hope and this book's advise is definitely not recommended if you want your spouse back!! I would never even sell this book for fear of the distruction it can cause. 5 stars ( The Dream Giver ) - This book is so good for someone who is facing a big change or needing direction in life. It really encouraged me to go for my "big dream" and it helped me know how to handle those forces that come against me as I do so. 5 stars (Highly Recommended!) - This is a great book from Bruce Wilkinson. It's a fairly quick read that I find myself compelled to picking back up and reading it again on occasion. I frequently give gift copies to those that we do mentoring for because it certainly has the potential to impact those who are ready for the questions and thoughts it will bring up in the reader. For anyone who is considering stepping out of their "familiar zone", making postitive change and pursuing a dream, this simple book is a good investment. There are predictable patterns to the process of stepping out and achieving an objective that makes us stretch. Wilkinson addresses this masterfully, pulling the reader along in a symbolic journey that is highly relatable. Ultimately, by the end of the book, the reader is left to some well guided thinking about priorities and the source of those dreams we hold so close. I don't believe God gives us a dream that He doesn't also provide the means to achieve it. This book affirms that in an entertaining parable. 5 stars (Great Book) - This is a great reading book, as well as informative and life-changing. It helps you to examine your life and God's specific calling for you personally. Have you ever wondered what God's plan for you actually is? Need help getting started on your journey? 4 stars (The Next Generation Leader: Five Essentials for Those Who Will Shape the Future ) - This book is for anyone who desires to be part of the next wave of God's move in North America. As a church we have a lot to catch up to (or get back to) what is life and normal to the church on other continents -- community the way it is suppose to be. 5 stars (Tested Leadership Lessons for Emerging Leaders) - Andy Stanley's purpose in writing "The Next Generation Leader" was to pass on to emerging leaders lessons learned in his own leadership experiences. The book centers on five leadership concepts. 1.Competence - Focus your time and energy in your areas of strength. 2.Courage - The leader is the one willing to take the lead. 3.Clarity - Be clear even if you are uncertain. 4.Coaching - It takes a coach to bring out your full potential. 5.Character - Character makes you a leader worth following and it provides you with moral authority. In Augustinian terms, Stanley has plundered the Egyptians, by borrowing many concepts from authors of business books and translating them into the vernacular of the minister and the world of the church. He does this with numerous examples of characters in the Bible and from his own personal life and ministry. "The Next Generation Leader" is a short, interesting, and thoughtful book designed for those beginning their leadership journey. It should also provide reminders and challenges to those who have served as leaders for some time. I highly recommend the book for emerging Christian leaders. If you are looking for a more comprehensive study of church leadership from a similar perspective I would recommend "Courageous Leadership" by Bill Hybels or "The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership" by John Maxwell. 3 stars (Next Gen Review) - The last section, section 5 on character, was the most encouraging part of the book. 7 Practices of Effective Ministry

5 stars (Must have book for the church leader's library) - The authors of this book do a great job of illustrating the 7 practices of effective ministry through the story of a baseball game. Later chapters dig deeper into how to apply the practices. Some of it seems so simple but then I wondered why I hadn't thought about them before. In fact, these practices are good for any organization, not just ministries. I'm using this book with my church staff right now and plan to have the leadership team read through it and began applying the principles to our ministry. 5 stars (Powerful) - This book was awesome. The principles set forth would work in any type of setting not just church. It is laid out in such a way that anyone can understand. It was a book I could not put down. I have read it three time now and still enjoy it. 4 stars (Interesting setting for tried and true principles) - This book does not present new or startling information, and the author admits to that. But it does put together some good leadership principles in an interesting way, relating them to baseball and placing them in a ballgame setting. The stage is set that everyone can relate to when the pastor wants to skip a church meeting and play hooky at the ball park. Most of us can relate to wanting to play hooky at one time or another. We are using this book as a study during our weekly church staff meeting, and it is generating lots of discussion as each person applies the principles to their own work duties and situations. I would caution against using it with a staff that includes many women ... unless they really like baseball. ...
