Into Thin Air - A Personal Account of the Mt Everest Disaster

5 stars (Into Thin Air) - Great book! Kept me on the edge of my seat. Well written, easy to read. 5 stars (Best book I have ever read!) - This is a great book. Hard to put down. It is written well and holds your attention on every page. I have read alot of books and this is my all time favorite. 5 stars (Gripping and informative) - This book is a 'one day read.' It literally proves that survival of the fittest rules the day. By accounting the lack of emotion in helping others and the illogic visions of people who do attempt extreme feats (and defeats), the author shows exactly how elements of OCD do lead people in pursuing maybe visions that humans should not really venture down. It's gripping, a hard lesson and fantastically written....especially so soon after the author had such a traumatic series of events. A total must-read and seriously, start reading this book knowing that whatever plans you had that day will be cancelled once you open this book! ...

Touching the Void- The True Story of One Man-s Miraculous Survival

5 stars (GREAT READ!) - If you like the DVD version you will like this book. It follows very close. Great pictures and maps! A must read. 5 stars (Completely Awestruck) - It never ceases to amaze me how much strength we human beings possess in a time a crisis be it major or minor. Joe Simpson and Simon Yates are two of the finest examples. To live to tell the tale of that horrific experience is quite a coup. This book is truthful, accurate as well as compelling and heart shattering. Even though my survival of having been kidnapped in Moscow in 1992 just after the fall of Communism is not the same breed of survival, I can only say that I feel for these two brave men. -Yvonne Bornstein, Author, Eleven Days Of Hell 4 stars (An amazing tale of courage and endurance!) - Touching the Void will take you on an incredible journey with the author as he struggles to overcome a disasterous accident in the Peruvian Andes. On the Ridge Between Life and Death - A Climbing Life Reexamined

4 stars (Inside a climbers head) - I was surprised by the openness of David Roberts book. The first that I've read of his works, it revealed what a climber thinks before, during, and after a climb, regardless of its technical difficulty. I found the feelings of climber's spouses, immediate family, and friends to be contradictory, yet aligned in an odd fashion. It thought that Roberts was brave, not only in his climbing, but in sharing his intimate feelings with the world. Roberts' book also took me into the world of higher education, revealing the politics and how many administrators are stuck in stupid mode. Despite the descriptive nature of the book, I still wish there were photographs in the book to help me visualize the books many characters. Roberts' vocabulary helped me to expand mine, as I frequently sought out the dictionary. 5 stars (Well Worth It!) - I eagerly awaited the arrival of this book as I have enjoyed reading David Roberts' other books on climbing and the Southwest. In this book Roberts' gives us an honest, revealing look at his early high school years through to the present day, concentrating on the various aspects of his life from climbing, teaching, and writing and what he gets out of each. He is directly involved in several climbing fatalities and yet continues climbing putting up many extremely difficult first ascents in Alaska. He examines his changing attitudes about the risks of climbing while reasessing the impacts the fatalities have had on his life and more importantly the families involved. Here we have a 62 year old who is looking back over his life, feeling pride over his accomplishments (justly deserved), shame over past behavior, and struggling through career choices, which can help all of us with our own moments of self evaluation. Between a Rock and a Hard Place

5 stars (Most moving and gripping) - I was not sure when I started this book whether I really wanted to know the details the author went thru, and early in the book I was astounded at how imprudent he was. But the account soon caught me up and I was totally mesmerized, and the book I found to be a triumph, ranking with Alive, by Piers Paul Read, as one of the most gripping survival stories I have ever read. I felt it was better than Touching the Void, by Joe Simpson, even though that book is on edge of the chair reading. Despite Ralston's imprudent behavior I found him an admirable person and the fact that he is still climbing mountains and doing other unbelievable things I concluded was inspiring, imprudent as it no doubt is. This is a great reading experience. 5 stars (Hard place felt) - This book was very good at describing the surroundings in such detail that the mood was set for the story. Granted, even though it is a true story, one could just feel the tension mounting, and could follow the time line of events that led to Ralston's freedom from his rock/hardplace captors. 1 stars (Dont Read this Book) - This is the most boring book I have ever tried to read. It was a Summer Reading book and I couldnt even finish it. It is soo technical, it is courageous how he lived through that ordeal, but the book dragged and was horrible, i give it 0 stars. ...
